Walk The World

Monday 18th October 2021 to Friday 26th November 2021

Join us as we Walk The World together, getting active, winning prizes and raising funds for charity.

The walkathon looks a little different this year due to COVID-19. This year we are going to race the other House groups around the world (virtually, of course), and raise money for charity. You will need to download an app, track your movements for 30 days and make a donation to be able to be in the running for a heap of excellent prizes.

The whole community is invited to join in, parents, staff, students and Old Boys.

You don’t need to be a marathon runner to be able to join the fun, just track your daily walks and steps to help support those in need.

Good luck and enjoy getting moving again!

Background

Waverley College Junior School’s annual walkathon has been a popular fundraising event for 30 Years. The Malcolm Sargent Cancer fund (now Redkite) was the walkathon’s first beneficiary, and the event has since supported 21 separate charities, all closely tied to the caring Waverley College community.

A Virtual Walkathon

Owing to the unprecedented situation that is COVID-19, in 2021 the walkathon needed to be modified. Our community and NSW is still impacted by this pandemic, and the physical and mental affect it is having on Waverley students is significant. This is why we have created an exciting virtual event ‘Walk The World’ with strong ties to the Walkathon.

Keen to continue the tradition, the 2021 walkathon will be a whole school event (Years 5-12, plus staff and parents), for the first time in its history.

Its focus will be:

  • Encouraging students to get moving and stay active during home learning, helping to get their fitness up before the return to campus
  • Promoting healthy and active lifestyles and improving overall health and wellbeing as the long lockdown comes to an end
  • Raising funds for charities that have long been supported by the annual walkathon
  • Encouraging team spirit and a sense of community as a whole school House event

Charities

Students are encouraged to raise funds from family and friends  and then register to participate by making a donation via one of four entry donation amounts:

$20 / $50 / $100 / $250

The funds raised will be used to support these charities:

  1. Edmund Rice Camps (http://www.edmundrice.org/Edmund-Rice-Camps-NSW)
  2. Sydney Children’s Hospital Foundation (http://www.schf.org.au)
  3. Snowdome Foundation (www.snowdome.org.au )
  4. Children’s Leukaemia and Cancer Research Foundation (www.childcancerresearch.com.au)
  5. Christmas hampers — to families within our community needing a spiritual lift owing to extraordinary circumstances.

My Virtual Mission

The Walk the World event will be hosted by My Virtual Mission which will go live on Monday 18th at lunchtime.

My Virtual Mission is an innovative online platform and app allowing participants to virtually walk, run, swim or cycle to various major cities around the world in their House group.

They will be virtually racing against the other Houses to see which house gets the furthest in the 30 days. Distance traveled is logged via the Virtual Mission app (which participants will need to download) linking to commonly used step-tracking software (like Strava, Fitbit, Apple Health etc).

All students, staff and parents are invited to participate. Running over a 30-day period, it begins on Monday 18 October (Week 3, Term 4), and ends on Friday 26 November (Week 8, Term 4).

Once participants have registered and entered the event, they then virtually walk, run, swim, or cycle as much as they like for the 30 days, being sure to track their steps through the app and linked tracking software. They can see their individual and House group progress via the My Virtual Mission app.

Good Luck!
