From Head of Green House, Scott Coleman
Green House enjoyed a solid start to the new year with 21 new students entering the house in 2017. Each of the students created a strong relationship with their year 12 ‘Big Brothers’, who took them on a tour of the campus and introduced them to Waverley life. From all accounts the new students have settled in Waverley College life well. Our team of wellbeing mentors have done a wonderful job in rolling out the new wellbeing system, building positive relationships with the students and welcoming them every morning. We thank the following staff for their role as Green House mentors in 2017: Mr Tony Moore (GR01), Ms Catherine Lowery/Ms Jannet Markey (GR02), Mr Jon Walker (GR03), Mr Gary Kennedy (GR04), Ms Kathryn Knowles (GR05), Ms Tegan Bayliss (GR06), Ms Katia Iturrieta (GR07), Mr Nicholas Kozma (GR08), Mr Patrick Darvill (GR09), Ms Nehal Badiani (GR10), Ms Phoebe Guirguis (GR11).
Year 7 camp and orientation
The year started off with a bang when year 7 students engaged in the year 7 orientation camp. It as a great chance to create new friendships, push the boundaries of adventure and take part in multiple exciting activities. The highlight had to be the Kayaking on a beautiful 40 degree day. Paddling around the Hawkesbury River was as fun as it was relaxing and much to the joy of the Green House students, we spent that afternoon swimming in the ocean.
Green House Breakfast
Approximately 80 people joined us for the Green House Annual breakfast in week 7 this term. I would like to thank the efforts of the Green SRC and prefects that were integral to the overriding success of the Green House Breakfast this year. On the menu was coffee, muffins, yogurt pots and a wide assortment of pastries and croissants. While the weather tried its best to make it a wet and windy day, the enthusiasm and positive energy was enough to handle the conditions. Thanks again to all the parents, students and Juju catering for all their support of the event.
Inter-house competitions
This term the inter-house competitions have been fiercely fought with Green managing to place 6th at the Swimming Carnival and 7th in the Year 7 dodgeball competition. Green House will need to play some catch up for the events happening in term 2 to gain some much needed inter-house points. Each student needs to have their Green house shirt to enable them to compete in the events next term. The highlight of these inter-house competitions was seeing the Year 12 prefects coach and mentor the Year 7 students in their hard fought dodgeball games.
Fundraising – Bake Sale
Thanks to all the parents who supported the Green House bake sale in Week 9. All the funds raised will go towards supporting our school Lenten appeal, The Ruben Centre, which is helping to end extreme poverty.
Green House Leadership
Congratulations again to our Green House Prefects and SRC members who have done a fantastic job in their roles this term. Their leadership at assemblies, during Green events and in general has been consistently outstanding. All the SRC members also need to be congratulated for their role at the various functions and events in term 1. The 300+ Purple ribbons they made for International Women’s Day highlighted their work ethic for important events and causes.
