Addiction and homelessness – a personal story

Guest speaker, Andrew, with members of Years 7 and 8

Guest speaker, Andrew, with members of Years 7 and 8

From the Assistant Director of Mission, Geraldine Cullen

Year 7 and 8 Guest Speaker

Last week members of Year 7 and 8 listened to Andrew, a man who has experienced drug addiction and homelessness. Andrew was bullied at school and this has had long-term negative effects on his life. Andrew shared his story and appealed to our students to be accepting of other people, even if those people are a bit different. The boys were really responsive and respectful. They asked Andrew lots of thoughtful questions. I hope they came away with a deeper understanding of the horrendous side-effects of bullying.

Social Justice Symposium

Last week I took some Year 10 students to the Edmund Rice Social Justice Symposium at Mulgoa. They heard speakers who are advocates for various justice issues in our society. Issues such as Climate Change, Refugees and Homelessness were openly debated. There were lively discussions with students from other Edmund Rice schools. Students really got to appreciate that human rights issues are rarely straightforward.

Many thanks to the Year 10 SRC who sold bandannas in Bondi Junction to support CanTeen. This charity supports young people living with cancer. The students raised $2000 in two hours.
