AFL Match Reports: 17 June 2017

First XVIII

7-8As vs Barker

7-8Bs vs Riverview

From the Captain of AFL Matthew Miller

Waverley College XVIII vs Knox Black

Waverley XVIII came up against Knox Black on the weekend and Waverley came away with a commanding win. Knox forfeited before the game had begun due to a lack of numbers so the game was labelled a scratch match and wasn’t very competitive. As a result of this two Waverley players were required to play for Knox each quarter. Regardless, Waverley put in an exceptional effort and didn’t give Knox anything. An all-round scoring effort from the team helped Waverley to control the game and put them over the line at the end of the day. Congratulations to all other teams who came away with a win on the weekend and good luck for the rest of the season.

Final Score: Waverley 23-13-151 to Knox 3-4-22

Goal Scorers: Thomas Tyson – 4 goals; Matteo De Vecchi, Max Curry – 3 goals; Hal Cumpston, Harry Whitaker, Max D’Agostino, Oliver Hackers, Anthony Vassallo – 2 goals; Matt Higgins-Titsha, Brendan Morrissey, Matt Miller (+1 for Knox) – 1 Goal

From 9/10s Coach, Emmett Pugh

Waverley vs Riverview

An excellent game by the boys against a very strong Riverview team. Waverley scored the first goal of the game and held the lead at half time. A few injuries saw a mismatched contest in the third quarter, as a result Riverview took the lead. Our best players on the ground worked hard to fight back in the last quarter but a few missed opportunities resulted in Riverview winning the game.

Overall the Waverley boys did an excellent job to keep up the team’s key focus on pressure, accountability and repeated efforts. Some sore bodies after this battle will be rewarded with a few weeks of rest over the holidays. Looking forward to our first game next term.

Final score: Waverley 53, Riverview 63

Best players:  Montgomery Parsons, Zac Murphy and Brook Preston

Waverley vs Barker

The Year 7/8 A’s faced a tough opposition this week in Barker. The first quarter was a very even tussle with Waverley playing some good hard footy. The second quarter left much to be desired with a complete lack in class, effort and skill displayed by the boys.

After half time they rallied together and put in a brilliant second half of footy, with the majority of time spent in our forward 50 peppering the goals. Credit to the back for holding Barker to nil for the final quarter with Waverley getting up 58-39 in a closely fought match.

Final score: Waverley 58, Barker 39

Best on ground: Noah Mitchell, Jack Bush, Jack Harris and Louis Kitto

Waverley vs Riverview

On Saturday 17 June, the 7/8B’s shaped up against a strong Riverview outfit. With some big boys amongst the opposition squad, we knew it was going to be an intense match. The Waverley boys however, set the tone early with several boys including Sam Connolly leading from the front. The first half was quite the arm wrestle, but as the second half rolled on, Waverley kicked it up another gear. Several goals with no reply saw Waverley finish the game 71-29. A very strong performance by all of the boys.

Final score: Waverley 71; Riverview 29

Best on Ground: Sam Connolly, Dylan Brown and Jared Garwood.
