Community service as important as ATAR for Year 12s in ANU overhaul

In a new scheme designed to diversify the university’s ranks, school leavers will be asked to meet a minimum threshold of community service and extra-curricular activity such as working part-time, playing sport or volunteering, on top of achieving the right score for their degree.

ANU vice-chancellor Professor Brian Schmidt said students were more than “just a score” and had unique skills on offer from time spent volunteering, working part-time, excelling in sports or performance or participating in student leadership.

FYA Blog – How Studying The Wrong Thing Helped Me Figure Out What The Right Thing Was

Some great tips in this blog (NOTE: the author is not advocating that you should deliberately pick the wrong thing)

Tip 1 – go with your gut

Tip 2 – do your research

Tip 3 – changing your mind is ok

“If I could go back, I would jump on Google and research a variety of degrees to figure out what they’re actually all about. I’d talk to people working on jobs I think sound interesting to find out what they’re actually like and how they got there. I’d speak to careers counsellors. And I’d ask for advice from family members and friends.”

Fr Bernie Thomas ofm, College Chaplain, presided over our Mass in honour of Our Lady and gave a wonderful homily that examined Mary in light of the information about her in the Gospels. Fr Bernie particularly emphasised the fact that Mary was an ordinary woman of her time and that she faced the same responsibilities and hardships of other women in her cultural and domestic situation.

I would like to thank all the students and staff who had roles in the Mass: Music, Acolyte, Readers, Gospel Procession, Offertory Procession, Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist, PowerPoint preparation, Audio Visual projection. I would especially like to thank Mr Evans, Coordinator of the Sodality of Our Lady, for the time and effort he put into the preparation and managing of the Liturgy.

Finally, I would like to thank the student body for the prayerful and respectful way they participated in our Mass.

Mufti Day – 28 August

With large areas of the state experiencing dry or drought conditions, the rain forecast for this weekend is likely to be too little, too late. Many areas of NSW are reporting their lowest rainfall totals in over 60 years. This has led to failed seasons, faltering crops, the loss of livestock which in turn causes severe financial hardship for farmers across NSW. Farmers face an ongoing battle of maintaining their property, protecting their livelihood and providing for their families.

According to Beyond Blue, male farmers suffer much higher rates of stress, anxiety and depression than the general population. Rates of suicide and attempted suicide exceed those of non-farming rural males and those from urbanized areas. This is particularly concerning during times of financial hardship and strain such as those occurring currently. Our prayers go out to any of our community members currently impacted by the drought and we encourage individuals to seek support through Lifeline, Headspace or Beyond Blue.

To assist those farmers in NSW that are experiencing drought, Waverley College will be running a Mufti Day for staff and students on Tuesday 28/08/18. This day is also a staff meeting timetable with boys being dismissed at 2:30pm.

Boys in Mufti Gear will be asked to contribute a gold coin donation during their Wellbeing Groups next week, families who wish to contribute may do so in cash or online at.

Rugby Wrap Up

The 2018 season will go down as another very pleasing year for the Blue and Gold jersey of Waverley College Rugby! It was a season which held a trial period where we met some old rivals in St Augustine’s and Scots, we went into camp at Narrabeen, we enjoyed the charm of our visitors from Wales, felt the heartbreak of coming so close to CAS glory against Barker. It was also a year where we showed how, as a school, we continue to play a great style of rugby with 10 CAS Premiership titles.

The season highlight was without doubt watching the Waverley Rugby Community stand behind Hugo Kulscar as he led the 1st XV side out in the final game of the season. This gave Hugo, who has been facing some tough health battles, a moment he will never forget. A reminder of what makes rugby such a special game and what makes our Waverley Community such a pleasure to be involved in.

Waverley College fielded 23 sides in the 2018 rugby season. From the 81 CAS rugby matches Waverley College were involved with, as a school, we managed to win 67 games. A winning percentage of 83% – An outstanding result and an improvement on the 2017 season! Congratulations to all players and coaching staff on this tremendous result.

Presentation Night

Presentation Night was held last Friday night for players and families in the 13s to Opens age groups. Over 400 people gathered to celebrate what was an enjoyable night at Eastern Suburbs Rugby Union Club.

It was an enjoyable occasion with a great deal of spirit in the room. Brother Murphy gave his reflection on the season, the Media Club shared a fantastic presentation including the season highlights, the Class of 2018 were farewelled and the wonderful player achievements were recognised. Referees, led by Mr Chen, were also acknowledged for their efforts through the season.

Further to player achievements, coaching staff were also celebrated for their commitment to Waverley Rugby. Mr Peter Frost was recognised for 50 years of service to Waverley College Rugby. Mr Frost had commenced his coaching career in 1969 when he coached the 14Cs. Over the years, Mr Frost has had many successes on the field taking his beloved 3rd XV to a series of premierships – including this year!

Mr Paul Cornish was also provided with the honour of having one of the major rugby awards named after him. The Paul Cornish Award for Contribution to Rugby was presented for the first time. Mr Cornish, who is a former Wallaby, is a much loved coach in the Waverley Rugby Community and has been over the last 16 years. Mr Cornish has dedicated a great deal of time to rugby and it was fitting that this award be named in his honour.

Mr Rino Tomasiello, President of the Supporters Club, gave a fantastic speech which included a donation to the Kulscar Family from the Rugby Supporters Club. On top of this, Mr Lachlan Kenny, one of our very kind parents, generously donated four tickets to the Bledisloe Cup to the Kulscar family. A beautiful part of the night.

I would like to sincerely thank all the support in setting up the night from the members of the Rugby Supporters Club committee (and their families) including Rino & Adela Tomasiello, John & Maureen Andrews, Terry & Tracey Murphy, Tania Nand, Denis Hickey and all those parents who helped on the night.

I would like to thank all those families and friends who donated items on the night, including Mr Anthony Eyles (Strand Cellars) who donated the wines for the Lucky Door Prizes. Your generosity is very much appreciated.

Farewell Year 12

On Friday Night we said our final farewell to those rugby players from the Class of 2018 who represented Waverley College. It will be very sad to see such a fine group of men leave Waverley. We thank these students and all their families for their contribution and support of Waverley College Rugby. Thanks must go to Corey Kallis who put together a very moving presentation on the night. We wish these young men all the best for their futures on and off the playing field. Good luck & God Bless!

Farewell & Thanks – Murphy Family & Tomasiello Family

It is with sadness that the community says farewell and thank you to the Murphy family and the Tomasiello family.

Tracey and Terry Murphy have been involved with Waverley College since back in 1997, when their eldest boy, Nicholas, entered Waterford. Over the years Tracey and Terry have made some priceless contributions to Waverley College and have assisted so well in generating such incredible spirit through the community. Always willing to support with fundraising activities within the Supporters Club, on the BBQ or Canteen as well as lending valuable advice on playing the game itself. We have been blessed to have such wonderful parents in the community over the last 23 years and thank them for everything they have given to Waverley College.

Rino, Adela and the Tomasiello family have all been heavily involved in Waverley Rugby over the last 8 years. This year Rino took over as President after serving as treasurer for a number of year. A passionate Old Boy, Rino was always mindful of keeping the Queens Park traditions alive – frequently reminding Mr O’Donnell to ensure the Waverley flag was flying high during home fixtures, and ensuring every visitors that came down to Queens Park was well and truly looked after by either himself or one of his very kind family members. It is not hard to see that family drives Rino – and this drive has helped continue to build the Waverley College family over the years. In the time that Rino and his buddy Darren Ellis have led the Supporters Club, there could be no arguments that the mission of these men has been far from making a profit, but rather making the community come closer and closer together. We will all miss the warm Saturday morning greetings, the offer of a coffee or “Café” and the non-stop banter as together we watch the sun come up over Queens Park for another big Saturday of rugby. Rino, Adela, Tomasiello family, thank you for everything you have given to the Waverley Rugby Community.

 Thank You

On behalf of the Waverley College Rugby Community I would like to thank the following people who have contributed so much to the 2018 season.

Sadly, the final whistle has blown for the 2018 season. I hope all members of the Waverley College community have enjoyed this special journey as much as I have. I look forward to seeing you in 2019, for what looks to be another exciting season of Waverley College Rugby.

Waverley to Win!

In a new scheme designed to diversify the university’s ranks, school leavers will be asked to meet a minimum threshold of community service and extra-curricular activity such as working part-time, playing sport or volunteering, on top of achieving the right score for their degree.

10 Jobs that didn’t exist 10 years ago

Watch the video

From the Head of College, Graham Leddie

Heads Speech to the 7 – 9 Academic Assembly: Fail to succeed

At our recent senior Academic Assembly, I spoke about the value of hard work by hand. The amazing power your hands can deliver through work, symbol, connection and love. Today, I would like to unpack the notion, ‘fail to succeed’. Please watch this short clip:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TxPpyvwXEco&t=30s

Everyone wants success but usually the first thing you find on the road to success is failure. This is what divides those who want success and those who are successful.

It is impressive to see students testing themselves, watching how others do things, asking for tips and assistance and then having a go.

Today, I will shake many academic achievers hands and we will celebrate their fine achievements, but what this does not show is how hard they worked, how often they failed and the number of attempts they made seeking success.

Nelson Mandela said, “Do not judge me by my successes, judge me by how many times I fell down and got back up again.”

Fail is an easy word to say, but a very different beast to wrestle with. Like a skateboarder as he lands on the cold hard concrete, it hurts.

It means realising you can’t do something at that moment.

It means wondering if you will ever be able to do it.

It may even mean battling with that voice in your head, that says you can’t.

But the admiration here for our academic achievers is that you got back up. You said to yourself, I can’t do it .. Yet! And you dusted yourself off and had another go. I suspect in lots of cases, as with all of us here, you are still having a go.

We are all looking forward to the next trick you are going to master, through enthusiasm and pride in your own achievement.

Our admiration is not just for the award, it is for the desire you have shown to try and try again. That is what learning is all about in anything we undertake in life, you fail and you learn from your mistakes. You seek to get better, one step at a time.

In this school learning community you are fortunate to be able to access amazing learning resources and be supported by your teachers. I am enormously proud of these young gentlemen who have mastered a skill that we can celebrate today.

I know amongst the audience here we have numerous learners who are standing on their deck with wheels spinning underneath them, looking for success, but remember the first thing you find on the road to success can be failure.

Hugo is currently undergoing intensive treatment for Leukaemia at Prince of Wales Children’s Hospital and, after some initial hurdles, he is responding well to treatment. His courage and support from family and friends are all helping in his daily battle with the side effects of his intense treatment. We now call on the wider community to support Hugo in his battle. You can show your solidarity with Hugo by making a donation at the link below to help fight this terrible disease. Hugo won’t give up fighting and your support to help him get through this battle will really lift his spirits.

Assumption Mass

At the Assumption Mass yesterday, Fr Bernie Thomas challenged us all to look past the statues and symbols that we have used throughout time to represent the Mother of Jesus, Mary. He asked us to focus on her steadfast faith, her trust in something greater than herself and her amazing courage as a 15 or 16 year old girl to be thrust into such a challenging situation. Like Sister Jan Barnett rsj at the May Procession, Fr Bernie challenged us to think about where we would find Mary in 2018. Mary would have got her hands dirty, she would have been assisting those most in need, those on the margins, such as the homeless, the disabled, those that have fled other countries and those needing love. Fr Bernie also commented on how reverent and prayerful the boys were at Mass, which he very much appreciated.
