From Acting Assistant Head of Science, Gemma Brown

Next week the students at Waverley College will be embracing National Science week in their Science classrooms. The Science staff will be demonstrating a range of experiments and exposing students to scientific concepts through the use of Virtual Reality technology in the library.

Students are also encouraged to enter the Education Perfect Science Championships which runs from the 13 – 20 August 2018. The more questions the students answer the more points they receive!

There is also a range of Science Week events around Sydney for families to get involved in. Further information can be found at the Sydney Science Festival website or the National Science Week website.

Prayer for the Week

What is the transfiguration of Our Lord?

The Feast of the Transfiguration of Our Lord recalls the revelation of Christ’s glory on Mount Tabor in the presence of three of His disciples, Peter, James, and John. Christ was transfigured before their eyes, shining with divine light, and He was joined by Moses and Elijah, representing the Old Testament Law and the prophets. The Transfiguration occurred in the early months of the year, after Jesus revealed to His disciples that He would be put to death in Jerusalem, and before He made His way to Jerusalem for the events of His Passion during Holy Week.

At the Transfiguration, Father, You showed
Jesus in glory, a glimpse of what His disciples
would see in His risen life.

Bless us in our humanity,
with an awareness of Your presence,
leading us to share in Your divine life
even in our daily struggle.

Help us to deepen
our knowledge of the Law and the Prophets,
channels of Your grace throughout history,
and signposts for our journey.

Wednesday, 8th August, is the Feast Day of Mary MacKillop, who we now celebrate as Australia’s First Saint: St Mary of the Cross. Mary MacKillop loved God and always listened to what God was saying to her throughout the events in her life. She always asked God for help for herself, her family and friends and for the poor.

Response: St Mary of the Cross: Pray for Us

We pray for our country Australia, that all people will be treated fairly:

St Mary of the Cross: Pray for Us

For people who can’t find work and people who are too poor to pay their bills:

St Mary of the Cross: Pray for Us

For people who are sad and lonely: St Mary of the Cross: Pray for Us

For people who are sick or dying and for the strength of their families:

St Mary of the Cross: Pray for Us

For people who live in families that are unhappy: St Mary of the Cross: Pray for Us

For people who leave their own countries because of war and violence:

St Mary of the Cross: Pray for Us

We pray together to Mary, Mother of God: Hail Mary

We ask God who cares for us in every way to listen to our prayers through the help of St Mary of the Cross. We ask this through Christ our Lord

Wakakirri

I had the great pleasure on Tuesday night to watch another amazing performance of over 100 students as they performed in the Wakakirri competition. Even after 22 years it warms the heart to see the boys so excited and nervous about been involved in the performing arts.

The story was as follows:

Stand up, stand out, stand proud!

It takes a brave person to be different and choose to stand out from the crowd. Our story shows how one person can change the lives of many by being fearless enough to stand up, stand out and stand proud.

I don’t know how she does it but Mrs Rollins again managed to produce an exceptional story which the boys told so well on stage.  This is Mrs Rollins 22nd stage production of Wakakirri and every boy involved takes away such amazing memories. Thank you for your unbelievable energy and imagination.

In a fitting result the boys were awarded the highest award of the night – The Spirit of Wakakirri Award – congratulations to everyone involved.

Special thanks to Mr Ghattas, Mrs Tunks, Ms Hoare and Mr McCarthy for their assistance throughout the whole day and evening.

Book Week – Find your Treasure

Message from Mrs Tunks

This year Book Week will be celebrated in Week 4 in the Junior School. The theme is ‘Find your Treasure’. The events include:

Author Jack Heath and illustrator Matt Cosgrove will be speaking to the boys and giving workshops. Boys can also purchase one of their books to be signed. Order forms are available from the Library.

A Book Fair will be running from Tuesday to Friday. Boys can purchase books from 8am Tuesday.

A Book Drive will also be running. Boys can bring in an old children’s book/s to donate to a local charity that sends books to countries effected by natural disaster.

The Book Character Parade will be happening on Friday. Boys come to school in their uniforms with their costume packed in their bags. Boys can either wear something that relates to the Book Week theme or their favourite book. We encourage all boys to participate. It is a fabulous event.

Parents are more than welcome to attend – a timetable for the day will come out next week.

Special mention

Well done to Charlie Grant, Angus Sundkvist and Ben Pignatelli who were part of a Representative Team for Randwick Rugby Under 10s at a tournament last weekend. From all reports they were fine ambassadors for the school and for rugby – well done gentlemen.

Winter Sport

This Saturday is the last game of the winter season. Good luck to all the boys and especially those teams that are striving for an undefeated season.

Photos
If anyone has photos from Saturday sport or any other Waverley College event that they would like to share with the rest of the College community could I ask you to send them in on a disk or memory stick to the Junior School office.

Can I please stress the need to ensure your son has his name on all his uniform and belongings – it makes it far easier to return any items.

Thank you for making the 2018 Blue & Gold Ball a great success

On Saturday 4 August, almost 700 parents and friends gathered in the Brother JP Lacey Gymnasium for the 68th Waverley College Blue & Gold Ball.

The ball – reinstated last year after a 40-year hiatus – has a long and proud history dating back to 1911, when a group of dedicated parents joined forces to raise funds to support the growth of a flourishing new school.

This year, thanks to our generous community, the Blue & Gold Ball raised just over $100,000, which all go towards building new learning and recreation spaces for our students.

We’d like to thank special guests including members of the Waverley College Board, the College Executive, Brother Brian Murphy, Peter Frost – who this year celebrates 50 years of teaching at Waverley – as well as representatives from the Parent Association and Old Boys Union.

We also thank our fantastic sponsors: McGrath Estate Agents; Hotel Bondi; Core Mortgage Brokers; BMW Alexandria and Rushcutters Bay;  NG Farah and It’s Insured. Special thanks also go our brilliant auctioneer Adrian Bo and our exceptional MC, Tim Gilbert from the Today Show on Channel 9.

Tevlin House Mass

Last Friday, 3rd August, 2018, the Tevlin House Mass, was celebrated by College Chaplain, Fr Bernie Thomas ofm. The Gospel (Matthew 9:18-19, 23-26), which was acted out by Lacey students, mirrored the message Speak through Action, the theme which our Year 12 Leaders have chosen for 2018. Tevlin Prefect of Spirituality, Adam McCabe, connected this theme with life at Waverley College in his Reflection.

Other features of this Mass included the Entry Procession and Gospel Procession, while the Communion Reflection Song, If You’re Out There by John Legend, aptly connected to the idea that actions speak louder than words. I would like to thank the staff and students responsible for their organisation and specific roles during the Mass. I would also like to thank Mr McCallum, Head of Tevlin House, for his assistance, as well as the parents who attended the Tevlin House Mass.

Adam McCabe’s Reflection

Good morning fellow students of Tevlin House. I am standing here today to speak to you about our motto for 2018 which is “Speak through Action”. Demonstrated within today’s First Reading and Gospel, I will further explain the importance and impact that speaking through action can have on others around you.

In the first reading, Edmund Rice decides to make a difference to help out those who are struggling, by giving them an education. He had a plan, which he stuck with and followed through ’til the end, not for himself but for others. He set out to help those boys reach their fullest potential by speaking through his actions, not continuously dreaming about helping them but actually committing to the goal, and setting out to make a difference.

You need to act to achieve. As a Waverley College student like yourself, many different opportunities will come along your way to be able to help yourself grow and succeed as a person, whether that is in academia, cadets, on the sporting field or other co-curricular activities. Each one of these opportunities comes with a chance for yourself to set a goal for the immediate future and strive to be able to reach it, whether it is getting an ‘A’ on your next assignment or moving up a team in your sport, having the drive to push yourself is imperative to your development as a person.

This especially is prevalent to the Tevlin House as almost all of us will be attending the ‘Tevlin Winter Sleep Out’ in which we be able to gain a better understanding of the prevalence of homelessness within the immediate Sydney area. In gaining this knowledge and listening to guest speakers on the night, hopefully this will open the eyes of all in showing the steps and actions that we can take in order to help, no matter how small. You need to act to achieve.

Within the Gospel, we are told how Jesus stuck to his word about the child who was thought to be dead but was actually alive; he was laughed at and made fun of but that didn’t stop him because he did not care about what others thought. This also reflects ‘Speak through Action’ by showing us that people will sometimes be a barrier in your path. Don’t let others stop you from proving yourself as to who you are as a person because you are different.

All of us here today can contribute by speaking through action in our everyday life, whether that is inviting someone to come and talk with your group when they are lonely or simply talking to someone you might not have before; it might sound weird but a simple “Hello” or small gesture of kindness can mean a lot more than you think. Incorporate this in the way that Jesus was able to look past the doubters!

The Scripture readings that you have heard today, strongly reflect the motto ‘Speak through Action’. Some of you might not see the connection to the readings directly but ultimately actions speak louder than words, as you can always say that you are going to improve but it comes down to if you really want to put in the hard work to making sure that you improve. Don’t just set a plan, achieve your goals! Try to exceed your own limitations and to push yourself just like Edmund Rice and Jesus. You need to act to achieve!

Feast of St Mary of the Cross MacKillop

College Chaplain, Fr Bernie Thomas ofm celebrated Mass at 8.00am on Wednesday 8th August in the College Chapel to commemorate the Feast of St Mary of the Cross MacKillop, Australia’s first and only Saint. Fr Bernie spoke about the hardships faced by Mary MacKillop and her great tenacity to overcome the obstacles present during her life. He also reminded the congregation of Mary MacKillop’s similar aspirations to Edmund Rice in providing education for the poor, especially teaching them about the love of God.

I would like to thank the Student Representative Council (SRC) students from Years 7-10 for attending this Mass as well as the several staff members who were also present.

I would also like to acknowledge those students who assisted with the Readings and Prayers of the Faithful: Angus Birrell (Tevlin House), William Durkin (O’Connor), Thomas Gleeson (Brennan), James Kort (Aungier), Sebastien Richardson (O’Connor), Christopher Salem (Quinn), Vasili Vertsonis (Tevlin) and Luke White (Lacey).

1st XV Match Report – CAS Round 4 – Waverley College Vs Barker College

The match of the 2018 CAS season was upon us. Waverley College Vs Barker College. Both sides held an undefeated record heading into Round 4 of the CAS season. The winner of this match would be in the box seat to take out the Henry Plume Shield for 2018.

Waverley kicked off, with a solid breeze behind them, and a fumble by Barker had Waverley in a point scoring position in the first minutes of the match. Barker were able to work their way out of early trouble and immediately showed their class by finding holes in the Waverley defensive line. A strong run by the Barker outside centre down the left hand edge of the field had the boys from Hornsby in for the opening try of the match.

Only a few minutes later the ball was at the other end of the park. An impressive line break by Lathan Hutchinson-Walters put Conor Molloy into space. The skipper was pulled down but the Barker defensive line were always going to struggle to take down Luca Moretti who went in for Waverley’s opening try just near the posts. Waverley in front, 7-5.

Following a Barker attack, which was diffused by a forward pass, Waverley fired straight back with style. Fly half Ronald Volkman found a hole as he ran over the cricket pitch and a cheeky pop to Reece Thorn had the Waves away again. Thorn was dragged down but somehow was able to return the ball back to Volkman and the Double V were over.

From the kick-off a magic return punt from Hutchinson-Walters again had Waverley planted back inside Barkers 22 metres. The home side was using the breeze well. An infringement at the tackle saw Waverley awarded with a penalty in kicking range, which Hutchinson-Walters slotted to have the Double V up by 12.

Yet another line break from Hutchinson-Walters put Phoenix Baldwin into space. Baldwin was dragged down by the collar and a penalty advantage was called. Sustained pressure allowed Waverley to run the Barker players around and a nice hole opened up for Aisea Aholelei to put Waverley up by 19 points after 30 minutes of play.

With a couple of minutes on the clock before halftime, a final push from the visitors saw a try to the Barker loose head prop. While this was not the most attractive of tries, it would prove to play a big part in the match as it reduced the margin to 12. This put Barker well within reach as the halftime whistle blew.

Barker came out with plenty of energy in the second stanza. With the breeze behind their backs and speed to burn out wide, Barker looked dangerous early. The Barker halfback spotted an overlap down the left side as the ball travelled through the hands. It looked like the ‘Reds’ were going in. That was until the ball found its way into the hands of Jacob Tomasiello who intercepted the pass to race away to the cheers of the home supporters. Waverley were now back up to a 17 point lead.

Luca Moretti then made one of the runs of the year, charging through the middle of the line like an angry bull. Moretti managed to get inside the Barker 22 metres before someone was able to somehow lasso the big man.

A few penalties gifted Barker with important field position as they continued to build pressure without panicking too much. This pressure eventually led to a try to the Barker hooker this time. Still 20 minutes remained on the clock with the home side ten up.

A few errors started to creep into the Waverley attack, as the Double V tried to force the pass despite holding a solid lead. Barker looked like they were coming over the top and were using the pace of the wingers to great effect, particularly the right winger who was able to find space on the outside to go over the line. There were now only 3 points in the game!

Every player looked like they were out on their feet in a truly spectacular game of rugby. Both teams did not stop trying to get their teams up field. At the same time, both teams did not stop tackling each other. With just 5 minutes to play, both teams were throwing everything at each other.

Hutchinson-Walters pushed a kick deep back into the Barker half. It found space, but unfortunately for the Waves, it could not find the sideline. The left winger for Barker managed to collect the ball, dodge past a few tackles and put Barker deep inside the Waverley half.

As the ball was swung wide to the right side of the field, it was clear to see that the red jerseys outnumbered the blue jerseys. Without a mistake, the Baker tight head prop planted the ball down to the delight of the Barker fans. But there was still time and Barker were only up by two points.

Waverley somehow managed win the ball back at the kick off through some good work by Harley McGuiggan and replacement Oliver Ferguson. As Waverley worked back into a point scoring position, the referees arm went out to signal a penalty advantage.

This was it. After almost 10 months of preparation and sacrifice for this match, the CAS season was going to come down to one kick. Esctasy for one side. Agony for the other. How cruel can it get? The crowd held its breath.

As the ball sailed to the right of the posts, Barker put the ball out into touch and the final whistle blew. Barker victorious 31-29. A classic game of schoolboy rugby. All players and the coaching staff should be congratulated for the tremendous display put on show for the world to see. Congratulations to Barker College! Congratulations also to every Waverley player. While heartbreaking, it was clear that every player on the park put everything they had in for the Double V jersey – the Waverley College Community is so proud of you all!

Around the Grounds

The 2nd XV enjoyed a sensational team victory in an evenly matched up game. Only a few point separated the teams in the end. Luca Martin had a terrific game at the back and Luc Johnson did not stop working around the park. The 3rd XV managed to draw the match 5-5. Big Nicholas Corias was the only try scorer for the Waves in the low scoring but entertaining contest. Captain Daniel Allen led his team very well as the 4th XV held onto their CAS undefeated record under the guidance of Mr David New. The 5th XV match was marred by a nasty injury to Tom Bower. Tom suffered a dislocated hip. Ambulance officers were able to relocate Tom’s hip into place, however, Tom had to spend a couple of nights in hospital as he required surgery. Fortunately, Tom is now out of hospital and on the road to recovery. The Waverley Rugby Community wishes Tom all the very best with his recovery.

In similar circumstances to the 1st XV, the 16As suffered a heartbreaking loss going down in the final minutes of the match after holding the lead. All the players and coaches involved should hold their heads high as this age group has continued to develop so impressively over the years. We look forward to watching what develops next year! The 16B enjoyed a tight win under the guidance of Coaches Lachlan Drew-Morris and Ben Donaldson. Keilan Grace scored a magnificent try to get the point scoring started. The 16Cs dominated Barker with a big win on QP6. The Fadel brothers had a fantastic match. The 16Ds travelled to Sydney Grammar where they recorded a solid win. Ben Smith played a tremendous game.

The 15As put a cricket score on the Barker side up at Hornsby. Aaron Dimovitch and Ethan Flanagan were pure class in the backline. The 15Bs travelled to Joeys and managed to record a win in a very physical displayed. The side welcomed Sam Carr back who had been missing for most of the season following two nasty injuries. The 15Cs faced up against the Barker 15B team and just went down by a try. Oliver Brownie was the pick of the 15C players. The 15Ds had a few players missing in their loss to Joeys.

A reminder that all players are to ensure they commit to training and playing in all fixtures until the end of the season. Rugby is a team sport and it is not fair on players who do the right thing. Players who continue to display a poor approach to rugby will have their position in the rugby program reviewed in future years.

The 14As were a little bit scrappy in their 19-7 win, but still managed to get the job done to remain undefeated. Ronan Schocher had one of his best performances of the year. The 14Bs continued on their winning way with a huge win at Barker. This included Max Barber and Jesse Sonego showing off their amazing skill set. The 14Cs turned the result from the week before around to win against Barker. Luca Derbyshire and Josh Algie combined well in the centres, and Dominic McGrath also played a good game in the forwards. The 14Ds and 14Es travelled to play Joeys at Hunters Hill. The Es managed a win, while the Ds finished in second place on the day. Conor Hanrahan, as always, tried his heart out for his side.

The 13As had a nice win as they head into the big final match up against Trinity Grammar School. Both Waverley and Trinity are undefeated in the 13As and this looks to be a classic match to end the season. Jesse Garratt was the man of the match. Tom Gleeson had a terrific match in the 13Bs win. The 13Cs also scored a nice win against Barker on QP3. The 13Ds and 13Es travelled to play Oakhill in the early hours of Saturday morning. Both sides recorded excellent victories with Roman Mellis and James Harding the standouts.

CAS Round 5 – Waverley College Vs Trinity Grammar

This weekend it is the final round of the winter sport season for 2018. Our 13s, 16s and Opens play their last games of the season at Queens Park, while the 14s and 15s teams travel across to Summer Hill to play at the home grounds of Trinity Grammar School.

This will be the final time our Year 12 students will pull on the famous Blue and Gold jersey. It would be great to have a big crowd down at Queens Park to watch all the Open Grades play with the 4th XV kicking off at 12pm, 3rd XV at 1pm, 2nd XV at 2pm and 1st XV at 3:15pm.

To the Year 12 students playing their final match, I encourage you to take a few moments to soak up the atmosphere at Queens Park and most importantly enjoy every second of the final game you play at Death Valley! You will never forget it!

Round 9 V Barker

Last weekend our teams faced the tough Barker teams with our Year 7, 10 and Opens playing at Queens Park. With many teams playing to keep their place on the table, the Waverley teams went in strong. The 1st XI had an unlucky 2-1 defeat with Dom Abruzesse scoring the goal. The 2nd XI had finished with a 2-1 defeat as well. Other great results were the 7As with a 5-0 win, keeping them in 1st place tied with Trinity, making this weekend a premiership game for them. We also had our 8Bs win 1-0, 7Cs win 4-1, 7Ds win 3-2 and also had a lot of draws over the weekend.

Round 10 v Trinity

This weekend is our final home game against Trinity and is ‘Back to Waverley Day’. As mentioned above it will be a premiership game for the 7As who will be playing at 3pm on QP2. Waves to Win!

From the Convenor of Track and Field, Kaitlyn Downey

Firstly, I would like to warmly welcome students, staff, parents and friends to the 2018 Track and Field season! The Waverley College Track and Field team is the largest team in the school and is involved in one of the most exciting events in the school calendar, the CAS Track and Field Championships. The commitment and dedication of the students in the Track and Field team is unrivalled throughout the school. Our athletes are here because they are passionate, they enjoy the challenge and they have the drive to win.

As many of you know, this is my third year as Convenor of Track and Field and this year I will be working closely with Miss Rebecca Gair in her role as 2IC. This year, we also have a very strong staff team supporting us who are keen to see the boys achieve their best results yet.

The success of Waverley College Track and Field is not only due to the efforts of the boys but also the involvement of parents. I would like to encourage and welcome any parents and friends who may be interested in assisting the Supporters Club through the 2018 season.

Our first training session starts down at Queens Park on Monday 13th August. All students are welcome to come down and try their hand at an event. No previous experience necessary. Please find this year’s training schedule below:

Community service as important as ATAR for Year 12s in ANU overhaul

In a new scheme designed to diversify the university’s ranks, school leavers will be asked to meet a minimum threshold of community service and extra-curricular activity such as working part-time, playing sport or volunteering, on top of achieving the right score for their degree.

ANU vice-chancellor Professor Brian Schmidt said students were more than “just a score” and had unique skills on offer from time spent volunteering, working part-time, excelling in sports or performance or participating in student leadership.

10 jobs that didn’t exist 10 years ago

Sustainability and web-based services seem to be driving the change – how does this fit in with your post-school plans?

Have you got the skills?

The Top 10 Skills Employers Look For

Anyone who doesn’t know that the job market for young people is tough has been living with their head in the sand. But there are ways to make yourself more appealing to potential employers and boost your chances in the job market.

We’re going to take a look at what employers want to see in their employees – the Top 10 Skills employers look for when assessing job applicants.

Your ATAR isn’t enough

Sure, getting a great ATAR is a good start, but it’s just one part of the puzzle.

Your marks tell potential employers that you know how to study, but they don’t give any indication of your other attributes. And those attributes, like flexibility, teamwork, and determination, can mean a lot more to your future employer than your ATAR.

Your employer wants to know that you will work hard, learn quickly, and fit into their team. That’s why you need to show them you have those skills.

Skills help you stand out from the crowd

The job market is competitive, and right now lots of people are applying for every job.

Which means employers need to look at what other skills you have to offer, what work experience or voluntary jobs you’ve undertaken and assess you on a number of key qualities to decide if you should get the job.

Having a range of skills, and being able to prove you have them, can help you stand out above the other candidates, and make it easy for the employer to select you.

Employers are looking for ten key skills

Each job will have a range of specific skills they need, but in general these are the ones that will help you stand out the most:

  1. Communications
  2. Flexibility
  3. Determination
  4. Team Work
  5. Ability to Learn
  6. Problem Solving
  7. Loyalty
  8. Resilience
  9. Self-discipline
  10. Tech Skills

In our next few posts we’ll delve into more detail about these top 10 skills employers are looking for, how you can brush up on them and how to get them across when you apply for jobs. You can follow along by signing up to the StudyWorkGrow Blog here, or on Facebook and Instagram

Waverley AFL First XVIII

From Coach, Matthew Porter

Waverley First XVIII (118) def Trinity First XVIII (97) in a high scoring game at ELS hall on the 28th of July. This game was extremely important for both sides with the CAS title on the line. The first quarter started as expected, being highly contested and had many lead changes to set up a one goal Waverley lead at the first break. A quick start from Waverley thanks to their midfield dominance was a big factor for Ash Backlund (5) and Noah Burgess (3) to convert in front of goal. Although, Trinity started the second half strongly with a flurry of goals to peg the lead back Waverley dominated centre clearances and time of position and went in to three quarter time with a healthy 9 goal lead. The final quarter allowed Waverley to rest some of their starters and provide opportunities for others to step up. Trinity won the final quarter making the scoreboard look closer than Waverley’s dominance on the day. Congratulations to Steve Morrissey, Darcy Mullins, Thomas Tyson, Henry Standfield, Timothy Waring and Harry Whitaker for their outstanding play as Waverley ran out 21 point winners. Waverley heads into the bye week with an 8-1 Win Loss record. Congratulations to all of the boys for securing the CAS title for 2018. Enjoy the weekend off.

Final Score:

Waverley: 18-10-118

Trinity: 15-7-97

Waverley AFL 9/10’s

From Coach, Fred Pawle

Waverley 104 vs St Ignatius 44

Waverley started their game off with a bang with Zac Murphy scoring the first goal of the match within the first minute this would set Waverley’s dominate position for the majority of the match early, After a few more quick goals Waverley were up by 7 goals at the end of the first quarter of play.

With the second quarter underway St Ignatius   would not go down without a fight and after scoring a few goals they were within three goals of Waverley’s lead, winning the second quarter and giving the match a further element of competitiveness.

The start of the premiership quarter saw St Ignatius   not let down in pressure against Waverley and continued to add goals on, however they would be matched by Waverley. Waverley began to see what was going wrong in the game and made a resurgence against St Ignatius’ fight and extended their lead to six goals at the end of the third.

During the fourth and final quarter of the game, Waverley stepped the level of their game up further and cemented themselves as the better team on the day piling a further four goals onto their lead before the end of the game letting the competition know once again they’re the team to beat.

Final Score:

Waverley – 104

St Ignatius  – 44

Waverley AFL 7/8A’s Match report

From Coach, Billy Tyson

Waverley v Barker – Pioneer Park

Our first game back from the break took place at our local ground Pioneer Park, against tough opponents Barker College. A team that gave us a very good contest last time we met almost resulting in a victory for them. The first quarter was the best footy the boys have played all year; the play was completely flawless, tough, skilled and unselfish. The football was so good you wouldn’t have thought they’d all been on holidays the last few weeks. As the game progressed, Barker tried to put themselves back in the contest, but the first quarter demolition left a 41 point margin that would just be too hard to fight with. Everyone on the field played their roles, and there was not one moment in the game where they didn’t do the team thing. This performance came with perfect timing, as we take on the easily beatable undefeated Riverview this weekend on their home deck, it will be a good contest and a game I expect the boys to take control of.

Final Score:

Waverley 90

Barker 31

Best on ground: Louis Kitto, Benjamin Dunkley, Aodan Byrne, Freddy Hunt, Luke Higgins and  Sam Stewart

Waverley AFL 7/8B’s Match report

From Coach Finn Mergler

The first game of the term saw the boy take on local rivals Cranbrook. Waverley just got the upper hand the last time the two sides met in round one and the lads were keen to replicate the result. The first quarter was a cagey affair that was interrupted by many stoppages as both teams intensity and tackling pressure made it hard for the game to get moving.

The second quarter was much more fluid, as Waverley’s Ball users Lang Curran and James Armstrong regularly started attacking movements that finally led to the Waves applying some scoreboard pressure.

The game was broken open in the second half by the pace of Waverley Midfielder Jake Weinstein, who continually managed to breakdown the Cranbrook defence and unselfishly handed to ball off to teammates for open goals.

Complacency from the Waverley boys saw Cranbrook claw their way back into the game early in the 4th quarter. However Waverley’s running brand of footy resurfaced towards the end of the game and proved to be too dominant for the Cranbrook Side, as Waverley ran out 16 point victors.

Final Score:

Waverley 68

Cranbrook. 52

Best on ground: Jake Weinstein, Lang Curran, James Armstrong, Alistair Isaac and Jarrod Garwood

AFL Presentation Night – Save the Date

The AFL presentation night is coming up next Friday the 10th August from 6 – 7pm. More details will be provided to you next week.

From the Head of College, Graham Leddie

The Head’s Address at today’s academic assembly…

Recently, I had the great privilege of travelling to Arnhem Land to witness one of the oldest cultures surviving on earth. Survival depends on the skills of hunting and gathering by hand, the very survival of these communities has been determined by the skills they have developed and passed on to each other over many years.

We were able to contribute to the growth of these communities through the use of our hands; we dug trenches through solid rock to carry water, created chicken coops for animal protection and built fenced off vegetable gardens.  This difficult manual labour might remind you that success and growth comes from sheer hard work, wrought by hand.

According to the ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle, the hand is the ‘tool of tools’. It offers the dichotomy of strength, power and protection whilst also providing generosity, hospitality and stability.

In Asian cultures the left hand is the symbol of ‘yin energy’ and the right ‘yang energy’. Hidden hands indicates humility and offering respect where it is due which explains the bow instead of a handshake in these cultures.

In most religions including the Christian Church hands together represents prayer, a raised hand a blessing, and as we cup our hands together when we receive the Eucharist and accept the body and blood of Christ, our actions give witness to our faith. We also offer through our hands the sign of peace to each other.

Holding hands with someone remains still today one of the most instinctual and powerful ways of communicating positive energy with another. Holding hands is a powerful symbol of solidarity, with many examples throughout history.

Here today we celebrate through acclamation the hard work that each of these boys has done in their respective subjects across Year 10, 11 and 12. We know that research supports the hand writing of notes and concepts to bring better understanding and development of new skills. We also know that raising your hand and seeking clarification enhances our learning.

But an award is something bigger than oneself, responsibility comes with achievement. You need to lend a hand to others and take them with you. Others need to challenge themselves from your hard work. If you are someone in the audience today who is still ‘sitting on their hands’, then take note, both the small hand and big hand are ticking on your life’s clock.

Something made by hand is sought after, it is unique, it requires care, attention to detail and innovation.  There is much satisfaction and happiness waiting for you, if by your hand you can help yourself and others.

Award winners, when you come up today to receive your award, remember that embedded in your firm handshake is an open promise, to use what you have learnt and the skills you have acquired, to make our community better.

Congratulations gentlemen on your fine academic achievements – I commend you.

Blue & Gold Ball

I wish the organising committee all the best for a successful ball on Saturday evening. Thank you to all parents and friends of Waverley College who have assisted with generous donations, organisation and support of the ball.  I am sure it will be a great evening celebrating our 115 year milestone and raising funds for the next chapter in our Waverley College journey. I look forward to seeing many of you there. If you can’t make it on the night you can still support our fundraising efforts by buying a raffle ticket and bidding on almost 100 auction items at www.blueandgold.com.au

I will mention that our major ball sponsor, McGrath is generously donating a commission-free house sale as an auction item. Real estate commission on a house worth $2.5 million could be as much as $50,000. This is a great opportunity to make significant savings if you are in the market to sell with bids starting at just $5,000. This is is valid for 18 months and is transferable to friends and family.

You can bid for this item online at www.blueandgold.com.au until 6:30pm on Saturday 4 August, with live bidding commencing at the Blue & Gold Ball at 9pm. If you’d like to place an absentee bid please email our Marketing Manager, Jennifer Divall at jdivall@waverley.nsw.edu.au or call 02 9369 0600.
