From the Director of Co-curricular, Steve O’Donnell

Welcome back to Term 3 and it has been a very busy break with also a very busy term coming up. We also finished Term 2 with a fantastic House Athletics Carnival for all students in Years 5-12 and well done to all staff and boys on their efforts.

We have continued to have a number of successes in a huge range of Co-Curricular areas.

This Friday our Year 8 Debating team is competing in the semi-finals of the CSDA Debating Competition. Led by Ms Alice Walker and Mrs Cassandra Foster, these young men are down to the final four teams out of 70 and we wish these boys and their coaches all the best in their tremendous efforts in this prestigious competition.

We had many boys, staff and families involved in huge range of activities during the break. I want to thank all of the staff and coaches that recently attended the EREA Basketball tournament in Brisbane, as well as the staff who gave up a lot of time in their holidays for rugby and football training.

Congratulations

Congratulations to Mr Scott Coleman as one of the coaches of the Combined States Rugby team that competed at the national rugby championships as well as Mr Kyle Newbury for his efforts as manager of the NSW Schools U16 Rugby team. We also had a number of boys involved with these groups and other representative teams:

Combined States – Conor Molloy (captain), Harry Whiteman and Lathan Hutchinson-Walters

NSW 1 – Luca Moretti

CAS U16 Rugby: Aisiea Aloholei, Ronald Volkman, Will Baker, Zac Smith-Karim, Miles Amasotero, Jordan Swann, Oliver Ferguson & Emmanuel Di Bartolo

NSW U16 Schools team: Jordan Swann & Miles Amosatero

Sydney City U16 Rugby: Aisiea Aloholei, Oliver Ferguson & Ronald Volkman

NSW CIS League: Davvy Moale & Aaron Dimovitch (U15’s)

NSW CIS League: Luca Moretti, Levi Milford, Marco Moretti, Lathan Hutchinson-Walters & Jarrod MacAskill

We also had a number of other boys representing in an impressive range of other areas:

Nikita Strbac – captaining the Australian U17 Water Polo side at the Pan Pacific Games

Max D’Agostino – NSW U17’s AFL squad

Ned Weiland – completing the triple crown in marathon swimming in the USA

Dane Towns – breaking his father’s 34 year old record in U14’s High Jump (180cms) at the House Athletics Carnival at the end of last term.

I also want to highlight Luca Moretti’s efforts in being selected in the Australian Schoolboys Rugby Union and Australian Schoolboys Rugby League sides. This is the first time in the College’s history that this has occurred and is an extremely rare feat for any schoolboy from anywhere in the country – well done!

We also played a touring Welsh team from Coleg Gwent in the holidays and I want to thank all of the families that billeted and assisted with this match. It was great to see a number of boys have their first run in the Double V as well as host these fine young men.

Important dates

This is a busy term coming up and I want to highlight some important dates:

I want to wish all students and in particular the Year 12 cohort for their final three rounds of winter co-curricular activities for 2018. Good luck and ‘Go the Waves!’

From the Convenor of Debating, Cassandra Foster

The Year 8 debating team consisting of Achilles Zanapalis, Conor Ryan and Mackenzie Flitcroft have won their quarter final debate and have progressed to the semi-finals. They are now ranked in the top four schools of over 70 schools around NSW who participate in the CSDA Debating Competition. This is the third debate in the finals series the boys have won. They were victorious over Mount St Benedict College and Bede Polding in Elimination Rounds 1 and 2.

After a long trip to Gilroy College in Castle Hill on the very last night of school after the athletics carnival, the boys won triumphantly over some excellent debaters from OLMC, a girls’ school in Parramatta. The topic was “That growing up today is better than it was for our parents”. Waverley had the affirmative side and put forward some strong arguments about the benefits of technology including its effects on our economy as well as references to the entertainment industry, ease of communication, travel and world safety.

The Year 8 debaters and their coaches Miss Walker and James will go to Santa Sabina College in Strathfield the first Friday evening of Term 3 to debate for a spot in the Grand Final. All students are encouraged to attend and support their fellow peers.

Meanwhile, the CAS Debating competitions also begins on Friday 27th July and continues for Weeks 1-5 in Term 3.

Good luck to both our Year 8 finals team as well as all other students who begin a prestigious and challenging competition.

From the Tevlin Wellbeing Prefects, Fred Watkins and Oliver Small

On a cold morning in June, Waverley College gathered at E.S. Marks Athletics Field for the Annual Athletics Carnival. As the buses pulled into the carpark, the sea of yellow spilled out into the stands, this was a sign for a great day ahead. The involvement of all boys was exceptional, they really expressed our “have a go” mentality and participated in all events especially the Year 5-6s boys; they were outstanding. It’s not all about winning but working as a team.

However, there were some outstanding individual performances and achievements made during the carnival such as, Dane Towns breaking his father’s 34 year old U14 high jump record with a leap of 1.80m. You could say he jumped higher than the average house… however houses can’t jump! Another great achievement for Tevlin; we had more 100m championship finalists than any other house! These finalists included Jake Weinstein, Isaac Kopsiaftis, Dane Towns, Ronan Schocher, Zac Smith-Karm, Chris Mills, Alex Talbot and Oliver Tamsett. This shows the participation strategy that Tevlin house adopted particularly well this year. The support and chants throughout the day were great to see, giving us the extra boost we needed to win some events.

The final chant off was a blast, we shouted and yelled our hearts out and were rewarded with a 3rd place. This and a 3rd place in the Tug’ O’ War gave us the crucial points we needed to become victorious over the other houses. All year 12 boys turned up the Tevlin spirit and led from the front, we have maintained the great Tevlin tradition of giving our all. Well done to all Tevlin boys on a fun and rewarding day out!

From the Convenor of Football, Stephen Wilmot

Welcome back to the last three rounds of football for the 2018 season. With many players having a restful break, our 1st XI were training during the holidays to be ready for a strong finish to the season. This weekend we have games against Cranbrook at Cranbrook for Year 7, 10 and Opens and the Year 8 and 9 players having another game at Queens Park. With many teams playing different oppositions this weekend and at various locations it is important that all players attend the game they have been listed for. Teams lists are available to view on TeamApp and are updated each Friday.

Football Presentation Night

The Waverley College Football Supporter Group will again be holding the Presentation Night on Saturday 11 August at 6pm in the Br Lacey Gymnasium. Tickets will be available to purchase next week with the link posted on TeamApp and next week’s newsletter.

They will be used as raffle prizes to make this night even bigger and better. Nothing is too big or small. Your generous donation will be acknowledged on the night and in promotional and marketing material associated with the event. Every donation is greatly appreciated. It helps the Waverley College Football Supporter Group raise funds that go directly to equipment, coaching and other resources to improve the levels of skill and fun for your sons.

If you can donate a prize, or have any queries, please email me: swilmot@waverley.nsw.edu.au

From the Convenor of Rugby, John McCoy

Welcome Back!

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome back all students and families to a very exciting finale to the 2018 CAS season. I hope all students, staff and parents had a relaxing break and are fresh for the remaining rounds of rugby ahead of us.

CAS Round 3 Vs Cranbrook

In our first week back, we definitely do not have an easy task as we take on Cranbrook. Cranbrook always turn up against Waverley in this local derby and will be hoping to catch us off guard. We cannot afford to take this round lightly and let go of all that we have achieved so far this year.

Our 13s, 16s and Opens play at Cranbrook, and our 14s and 15s will have their final match of the year at Queens Park. All players need to ensure that they arrive early to each match to have a thorough warm up. While it is a short trip to Cranbrook, it can take time with heavy traffic. Players are also expected to reserve for the match following their own.

Australian Rugby League Championship

The Waverley boys did us proud and came 1st in their pool. They lost a close game in the semi-final to the team that went on to win the competition.

Representation Selections

Over the holidays, Waverley College had a number of students who were selected in state and national representative teams. Congratulations to the following students:

Australian Schoolboys Rugby Union – Luca Moretti

NSW 1s – Luca Moretti (1st Place – Australian Schools Championships)

Combined States – Harry Whiteman, Conor Molloy, Lathan Hutchinson-Walters (5th Place – Australian Schools Championships)

NSW U16s 1st XV – Miles Amatosero

NSW U16s 2nd XV – Jordan Swann

Sydney Juniors U16s – Aisea Aholelei, Ronald Volkman, Oliver Ferguson

Congratulations to Mr Scott Coleman who did a great job coaching the Combined States team as well as Mr Kyle Newbury who has been selected as manager for the NSW U16s teams.

Waverley College 1st XV Vs Coleg Gwent (Wales)

During the holidays, Waverley College families were very generous in hosting a touring team, Coleg Gwent, who made the journey from Wales. On Sunday 15 July, the 1st XV faced up to Coleg Gwent with the touring side proving too good on the day. The final score was 19-10 in a competitive affair.

It was a fantastic hit out for our boys, with a number of students having the opportunity of wearing the Double V jersey for the first time. Further to this, it was a great chance for our boys to develop relationships and learn about the Welsh culture. Our boys were blown away by the singing of the visitors – something we can improve on in our rugby program!

Thanks to all those families who put their hands up to billet the touring group for the two nights. It again shows what a friendly and hospitable community we have at Waverley College!

Rugby Presentation Night

On Friday 17 August, the Waverley College Rugby Supporters Club will be holding the annual Presentation Night. This year the event for families from Years 7-12, and will be held at Eastern Suburbs Rugby Union Club (22A O’Sullivan Road, Bellevue Hill). Advice for choosing HSC Courses from NSW Education Standards Authority

Your aim is to attain the best HSC result you can. So, you should choose courses that you are good at, interested in and may use in the future.

When considering which courses to study, explore the content of a course. For example, what are the course outcomes? Will you be required to submit a major work, or perform, as part of your exams? Talk with your teachers about your strengths and weaknesses, as well as individual course requirements, before making your selections.

Job Spotlight

Real Estate Agent

If you’re a ‘people person’, and dream of an exciting and varied work life that financially rewards you for the hours you put in, you should consider becoming a real estate agent.

Real Estate Agents are licensed professionals who help people who want to buy, sell or rent property. They help people prepare their homes for sale or rent, and they also help people find a property to buy or rent. Some real estate agents work with commercial property (like factories, retail and office property), and some manage rental property on behalf of the owner.

Watch the video from Seek Learning

A day in the life of a Real Estate Agent

 Salary range:

According to Payscale, median salary is $48,385 but those with more experience can earn $77,585 per year and with commission up to $97,871.

Qualifications Required:

Wherever you live, in order to work in Real Estate, you must first be registered or licensed. Most people who start out in real estate get a Certificate III or IV in Property Services (Real Estate) and undertake some on-the-job training.

To become a Principal (someone who runs their own agency) you’ll need an Associate Degree, Advanced Diploma, or at least three years of relevant experience.

Here’s how to get started

Getting some initial experience within the industry could be a helpful stepping stone – applying for work experience or administration roles with a real estate agent will give you an insight into the job and add some credible experience to your resume.

But before you can work on your own you need to become licensed. There are plenty of study options out there – TAFE, for example, offers online courses specific to NSW, QLD, VIC, SA and WA. Check in with your local TAFE to see what courses they offer.

What does the work look like?

No two days will be the same. You could spend your time showing houses and apartments to potential buyers, providing quotes to possible sellers, or even managing rental property which could be anything from arranging repairs to following up with tenants who haven’t paid the rent.

You’ll generally be dealing with people all day long, and you’ll need a good grasp of money and finances because you’re helping people with their biggest investment – their home.

Great real estate agents often have these skills:

2018 Trade Careers Evening

Inaugural Trade Careers Evening

Last week the College held the inaugural Trade Careers evening for parents and students. Ms Knowles the Senior Studies and Careers Co-ordinator organised some very impressive Old Boys to address the audience about their experiences post schooling and their pathway at school. Thank you to the following Old Boys for giving up their time and sharing their journey and expertise:

Thank you also to Mr Terry Murphy who delivered a parents’ perspective on the non-ATAR pathway, covering the advantages and opportunities it can open up.

Far too often, we as parents get caught up in a system that drives us to thinking that an ATAR pathway is the only choice. Often when a parent carefully considers their son’s strengths, interests and future job prospects, a more practical, non-ATAR pathway is a better choice. For the men who spoke to our students at this event, their choices allowed them to develop their strengths and set themselves up well for the future.

Subject Selection

An important evening held earlier this week was our subject selection evening, particularly for our Year 10 students. Thank you to the large number of parents that came along to support their sons with this very important decision. I encourage all parents to make informed decisions regarding the subjects selected and pathways chosen. It is very hard to make changes further down the track, if at all possible. Ms Kath Knowles is a wealth of knowledge should you still be undecided about the right choices.

Immersions

We wish all of our staff and students heading out in week 3 of the holidays a safe and rewarding experience. They will return at the start of Week 2. Staff attending will be:

Winter Uniform Improvements

This term there has been a weekly uniform check when boys leave the campus at the end of the day. I am happy to say that over the past nine weeks only on four occasions did a student not have their correct winter uniform on or be in possession of a uniform pass. This is a significant improvement in a short period of time and sends a positive message to the community in terms of the great things happening at the College. Boys are to be reminded that these checks will now be conducted daily during Term 3.

I am confident that doing the small things well (such as uniform) means we can continue achieve great things as a school.

2020 Student Interviews

The Executive and I are currently interviewing for the 2020 cohort and it is great to see the wonderful families who are about to join our Community and contribute to the College. During the interviews, I go through the many benefits that come from attending a school such as Waverley and the importance of partnership between parents, College and their sons.

At Waverley College, our core business is underpinned by good relationships. We are well aware that our boys will respond positively if they know that they are valued and treated fairly. Our vertical house structure, mentor groups, extensive co-curricular program, wellbeing and health centers are all evidence of this.

If relationships are so important, how are we as parents prioritising them? What are the mantras or rituals our families follow to engender togetherness? How are the sacrifices of the past being appreciated by your sons? Recent research is showing that many young people are finding it difficult establishing and maintaining relationships and socialising because they spend so much time alone, face down in an electronic device, they can’t read faces.

Parents need to reclaim their families. Family meals where topics like gratitude, joy, love and interests are discussed. Beginning a conversation with “what was something good that happened to me today?” We now live in a culture devoid of deep and meaningful conversation. Try a device-free hour or two to spark the joy of family time, and hopefully be able to put a focus on what is clearly valued by you all. Relationships and family.

“Humans. They sacrifice their health to make money. Then they sacrifice money to recuperate their health. Then they are so anxious about the future that they do not enjoy the present. The result is that they risk not living in the present or the future: they live as if they are never going to die, and then die never having really lived”

FROM THE DIRECTOR OF BUSINESS SERVICES, BRYN GREGERSON

Prayer of the Week – END of TERM

We thank you Lord, for this term.  For the challenges, the successes, and the mistakes from which we have learnt.

Be with us as we spend our time with family and friends.  Give us strength and courage to do what is right: to be witnesses of our faith.

Help us to be a good person these holidays, to appreciate what others do for us, to give time and effort to help others. To be peacemakers in our family.

We thank you for our classmates, teachers, parents and a community that cares for us.  May we always be conscious of you in our lives.

Keep us safe in our activities; give us good rest and good fun. Bring us back refreshed and ready for a new term – Amen

Write A Book in A Day – Dedication for Hugo

Last week I mentioned the Write A Book in a Day contest that seven Year 5s and seven Year 6s attended in the Grange Area of the High School. The competition is a cancer fundraiser and so that was always in the background as one of the reasons the boys were doing this. It was such a lovely surprise when we received the two books the boys had written. Upon opening the front cover of the Year 5 book we found this spontaneous dedication to Hugo. I checked with Mrs Arkins who supervised the boys and she said she had nothing to do with it. The boys decided to do this themselves. The dedication read as follows:

Dedicated to the Children, especially a Junior School Waverley Schoolboy called Hugo, who is going through a tough time battling against Leukemia in hospital. Keep fighting hard against the sickness.

Thank you for believing in yourself and keep trying and don’t let people or things get in your way of the things you love.

You may think you are ordinary but you are unique. This book was brought to you because we love writing and drawing. Do what you like and you will produce something amazing.

Tony Banboukjian Returns – Term Three

We were all very excited to hear from the Head of College, Mr Leddie, that Tony Banboukjian, the Director of the Junior School, will return to us for Term Three. As has been explained already this year, Tony’s second five-year contract, for a total of 11 years as Director of the Junior School, came to an end at the end of this term. The extra year is not a Maths error, but because both Tony and I had 2008 as our first year as a new leadership team in the Junior School, on a one year Acting appointment, before we were both offered longer contracts. In fact, this year marks Tony’s 27th year of guiding students and staff through the Junior School experience at Waverley College. Knowing it will also be his final term with us is tinged with sadness for all, but also a great excuse to celebrate his contribution and legacy over all those years.

With this, my last entry in Nurrunga for my stint in the chair, it will also be my last chance to publicly thank Tony for his leadership and friendship over my time at the Junior School. My treatment will take me away from school for most of next term and I am more than likely going to miss the celebrations and farewells, for a man I have come to love and admire in my time at the Junior School. Of course, for the last eleven years we have had to walk step by step together to make this place what it is today. I know you all have your own opinions on where that might be.

Tony stepped into the role of Director in 2008 after a tumultuous few years in the Junior School, which saw a number of changes. Enrolments back then were always a challenge to fill the school and reach the maximum numbers. Today we cannot find enough spaces for those wanting to join us.

Tony rebuilt the school from that point to what it is today. He oversaw the building programme, which also included the fire that took out the bridge on the drive and caused damage to what is now 6 Green and the Auditorium. I can remember him giving up his whole Christmas School Holidays to oversee both clean up, repairs and the completion of the building with the governments BER money. His dedication was without question.

I remember a principal from a local public school visiting who could not believe how impressive our COLA on the playground was in comparison to what his school had got with the same amount of money. Some of that difference was Tony’s hands on approach to this project compared with the systematised process being used in the public system. Tony was able to request more and get a better result with our money by being so involved in the project. He made it his personal mission.

There are many stories to tell but suffice to say Tony has lead the Junior School community well, with a wonderful blend of selflessness, strength and gentleness. He has allowed all of us to grow and own this place in so many ways. No suggestion or idea was ever ignored. He trusted his staff and the boys to deliver their best and then gave us the freedom to do so. He always had plans brewing for improvement and had a quiet yet firm vision of where he wanted the Junior School to go and grow. There is so much he did behind the scenes that many would not realise.

We have been with Tony through many of the highs and lows of his life over that time and have walked the journey with him as he has walked the journey with many of us through the joys and struggles of our lives. He has supported all of us without question or doubt. On so many occasions.

With Term Three being his final term with us it is only right that we all join in celebration and thanks to a man who has given close to half his life building and serving the boys, families and staff of this place. He will be greatly missed. He has done a wonderful job and I know he won’t want a big fuss, but that might be a little out of his control. So please take the chance to offer your thanks and gratitude to a man who means so much to us all. A leader, a teacher, a friend. Thank you, Mr B.

Final Thanks

As mentioned last week it has been a very tough term in the Junior School for myself and many staff who have had their own challenges. Yet still we have made it to the end and for the most part and had a wonderful term We have worked hard to do the best  we can for the boys in our care. I would like to thank the Head of College, Mr Leddie, for showing faith in my leadership given the circumstances and challenges affecting me. I have enjoyed the experience and opportunity to be part of the leadership team of the whole school and have survived.

I want to thank all the staff for their dedication and commitment to the boys and the school. They are truly a loyal and dedicated group of teachers. Education and society just seems to ask more and more of teachers these days and it has certainly got more complicated and corporatised than it ever was when I first started. It is no wonder statistics show a far too healthy percentage of our young teachers giving up on the profession after just five years. I know many older teachers who also see that amount of time left in their careers.

I especially would like to thank the Junior School Executive for the amazing job holding things together with all that was going on here and in their own lives. To Mr Meadley (Sport) and Mr Gill (RE) thanks for stepping into new roles. Ms Bransby and Mr Ghattas for your professionalism and thoroughness in all you do. Special mention to Mr Ryan, who lost his mum at the start of the term, but still was able to take on the role of Assistant Director and at times Director in my absences and do so seamlessly. He covered me well on my days off and took on so much more than is usual. He never complained to me once and was always willing to do more if I needed him. We shared many conversations and found a way to solve many problems and even share a laugh together on most days.

Of course, we all joke, but not too seriously, about who really runs the Junior School and I need to thank Audrey. Audrey kept me going on the tough days; the down days; the painful days. She directed me and assisted me with many things that could not be found in the manual on ‘How to Run the Junior School’. Don’t worry, there is no manual, but we do have Audrey and there are not too many things she doesn’t know in regards to how the place runs. She was my support; my nurse and my life coach on many days, especially the ones I was struggling to find my way to the end of, especially in the early weeks.

Thanks also to the boys and the families that have reached out and shown me so much love; care and support over the term. The holidays will be a great rest and I come back to some big personal challenges when I return, but I carry that support with me. The holidays should always be a good rest and break for all after all we have asked of you; your boys and your families. Recreation is what holidays are for so make sure you take the three weeks break to re-create yourself; get the rest you all deserve and be ready to come back refreshed and full of enthusiasm for another exciting term. I hope to see you all then for a little while longer.

Thank you, Jack McCarthy

We have been so lucky to have Jack take part in the Junior School for most of the nine week term. Five weeks on 5 Blue for Mr Ghattas; a week of casual work; and a final three weeks on 6 White for Mr Robinson. Jack is a wonderful young man and a fine teacher and coach. A passionate Old Boy of the school, whose father and grandfather are also Old Boys. His return to the Junior School, to work with some of the teachers who taught him, has been a great treat for all as we have had the pleasure of watching this young man grow and mature to this point. He has fit in so well and taken on all challenges we have thrown at him. We will be hopefully seeing him back when we can get him next term if we can prevent other schools from snatching him up. Thanks for contributing so much to the school – Well Done.

Farewell Matthew Hamill – 6 Gold

Matthew Hamill moving to Singapore

This week is also the last for Matthew Hamill from 6 Gold, who is moving with his family to Singapore, where dad has picked up a new job. Matthew is not a stranger to Singapore where he has lived once before. He will be attending an International School there. We all wish Matthew every success in his new school and home and know you take or blessings for a safe and happy time in the years ahead. We hope to see you again in the future and know we will always be here should you wish to come back and say hello.

The Final Week and Next Term Dates

Final day of school for the term this week is – Friday the 29th June after the Athletics Carnival.

The holidays run for three weeks and after a Monday Staff Day (23/7) the boys return for Term 3 in full winter uniform on Tuesday 24th July.

School Leadership Term Three

With Tony Banboukjian’s return as the Director, the Executive will somewhat return to normal in Term Three. However, my involvement in the term will be much shorter (most probably just the first three weeks). I will be around planning and working behind the scenes as a non-teaching staff member on a reduced load. Mr Ryan will continue as the Acting Assistant Director. He will teach Year 5 Maths and Computer Studies. Mr Meadley will continue as the Acting Sports Master for the term and stay on 6 Red. Mr Proudfoot will continue in 6 Green for Mr Ryan. I wish them all well and hope to be back when the doctor’s give me the all clear.

Pre-School Reading Program

This is our second year of linking to the pre-school via our reading sessions with the aim to build literacy and confidence. Six Junior boys from Year 5 spent some of Wednesday reading in pairs to the Pre-Schoolers. It worked really well as each pair read two books to three separate groups. The Year 6 boys will also have a turn doing this soon. The boys in year 5 all indicated how much they enjoyed the experience today.

ICAS Digital Technologies – The Results are In

The results of the ICAS Digital Technologies Test from earlier in the term was completed by choice by 18 Junior School boys. This week the results were delivered to the school and boys received their certificates of achievement or participation at Thursday afternoons final assembly for the term. We congratulate all boys for taking part, but special mention to Yannick Hott and Jude Timbs on the rare event of a High Distinction. The high achievers are as follows:

Strategic Planning Committees – Junior School Staff

We would like to congratulate the following Junior Staff for putting themselves forward to contribute to the strategic direction of the College and become a member of a strategic focus group. There are a number of groups and these groups will meet approximately six times for a double period during Term 3. Mrs Rollins and Ms Stephens have joined the Enhanced Teacher Quality Committee along with a number of High School staff. Mrs Rollins has been appointed as the Chair of the group.

European Music Tour

Mrs Rollins headed off today with a number of the Music Staff and boys in tow to Europe. Mrs Rollins will be looking after the choir. We wish all a safe and exciting trip to the other side of the world.

The Hugo File – Update

Hugo continues to find the initial stages of the chemotherapy problematic and has not yet been able to make it home as planned. We ask you all to keep him and his family in your prayers.

A reminder that at some point Hugo will be allowed to come to school to spend important time with his friends and class. These times are seen as crucial socialisation and confidence building opportunities to keep Hugo engaged with his community. We will notify you of these days when Hugo will be coming in via Skoolbag App and we will need you to take action if your son is unwell in the following ways:

If your son develops of has a confirmed case of chickenpox, measles, shingles or whooping cough you must notify the school immediately. This is important so the family can be advised and the appropriate treatment may be given to Hugo. As his chemo treatment will lower Hugo’s immunity, it is vitally important that we are made aware of any medical issue as above as you can imagine the family would need to be informed as a matter of urgency.

A case of chicken pox was reported just this week and we thank that family for their prompt action in letting us know. Hugo is not back yet, but it is still important to let us know and take the required time away from school when your child develops the symptoms of chicken pox.

Mr Stanton & his wife, Bernadette – In our thoughts & prayers

Mr Stanton’s wife Bernadette, who had a fall at home last week and broke her hip, is still in hospital.

As a community please keep Bernadette and the Stanton family in your prayers at this difficult time. May her recovery be as quick and as painless as possible.

Whole School Athletics Carnival – Friday 29th June – THIS WEEK – From Mr Meadley

The College’s House Athletics Carnival will take place on Friday 29th June at ES Marks Athletics Field and we have been invited to join them on the day. (Please note we will still have our own Junior School Athletics Carnival on Thursday 2 August – Term 3 Week 2)

The Junior School emphasis of the day is participation and friendly house competition. The day is also an excellent opportunity for boys to display their talents in the 100m event and a range of novelty events. Boys will compete in their age category.

The day is a great community and house team building occasion. The Waterford students will have a wonderful opportunity to interact with the Senior School students. The day is a compulsory school event and a wonderful way to end a very busy term.

Boys are asked to wear their college tracksuit, house jersey, PE shorts (Colour Comp Uniform) – Please make sure they wear their college cap and their own sunscreen.

 Details:

Or

Please note:

Or

Canteen facilities are available at the venue but please be warned they are not cheap. Boys are encouraged to bring their lunch and drinks with them.

In the event of rain, boys will come to school in their College tracksuit, but are also asked to bring books/equipment for normal lessons (Friday Week B). The wet weather phone number is 8250 3780. This information will also be available on the Skoolbag app.

We are sure the day will be enjoyable for all. Parents are most welcome to attend. Your son should have presented you with a permission note for this event due back at school by Monday 25th June.

Term One Interim and Mid-Year Reports

We will send an email in the next few days to advise that the Mid Year Reports are ready on the Parent Portal.

Reports are written to parents from teachers using adult language. Parents are asked to consider the wisdom of sharing the reports with their son. We do not encourage this practice. Children receive frequent feedback from teachers about their progress in class in child friendly language.

The critical points to remember are:

Parents should always remember that a school report is a summary of a boy’s current level of achievement with suggestions for the future. Child development and progress varies and changes as children grow and mature. We are reporting on each boy as they are now. It is not a prediction of the adult they will become.

Term Three – A Busy Start

Reminding you again to lock in two special events in the first two weeks back after the holidays.

On Wednesday 25th July Week 1 the boys will be taking part in the Winter Sports Blitz Day at Queens Park involving all the Winter Sports we play. It is an exciting day of sport and one of the special days on the Junior School calendar.

On Thursday 2nd August Week 2 the Junior School Athletics Carnival at ES Marks Field. This is our official carnival where we select our athletics team and allow all to compete in a day of both traditional and novelty races.

Wakakirri 2018 – Term Three – Coming Soon – Tuesday 7th August

Mrs. Rollins is in full swing with preparing for the 2018 Wakakirri performance at NIDA – 215 Anzac Parade Kensington NSW 2033 on 7th August 2018 (Performance 1). Mrs. Rollins and three Junior School staff members will be with the boys all day as well as during the performance. The performance starts at 7.15pm sharp. From the Head of Aungier House, John McCoy

Term 2 provided students in Aungier House with the opportunity to engage in a range of community activities. The term presented opportunities for students to support a number of social justice initiatives, join together with the community in prayer and engage with the academic and co-curricular challenges encompassed within a short but busy period.

The first Sunday in May marked a very important community event for Waverley College, as we came together in honour of Our Lady. Aungier Students in Years 5 and 7 had their first experience in attending the 108th Annual May Procession. The community heard from Sr Jan Barnett, Social Justice Coordinator of the Sisters of St Josephs, who gave a beautiful reflection on how Mary was portrayed in Luke’s Gospel. Another feature of the May Procession in 2018 was the reciting of the fourth decade of the Rosary in the native Irish tongue. Mr David McCormack, Aungier Mentor, along with four other staff members took part in this special element of the Procession.

The “Beanies for Brain Cancer” initiative was a focus of support for students, staff and families involved in Aungier House. This was an imitative led by one of our youngest members, Digger Callander. Digger’s father, Matthew, sadly lost his battle with brain cancer last year. Digger, bravely, shared his story in front of the large senior school audience. Digger’s incredible efforts really did make a big impact on the school community as hundreds of students and parents flocked to Bondi Beach to support the launch of the NRL Beanies for Brain Cancer Round; which was a World Record Attempt to have the most number of people gathers on a beach wearing beanies. Furthermore, Aungier students including James Waterhouse, Tom Jaeger and Ryan Jones helped in the sale of beanies at school to raise funds for the Mark Hughes Foundation in fighting brain cancer.

The winter sport season really took off in Term 2. Aungier House had students involved in a range of activities including football, tennis, rugby, lawn bowls, table tennis, debating and media group. The footballers commenced the CAS season and Aungier students Domenic Abruzzese and Jasper Marsh-Cashman were given the honours of representing the 1st XI team. The rugby players met some strong GPS and ISA schools in the preseason matches and started the CAS season off with a flying start against Knox Grammar and St Aloysius. Congratulations to Aungier students Kieran Donohue, Lathan Hutchinson-Walters and Ronald Volkman who all had the honour of wearing the “Double V” (1st XV) jersey. The Davis boys (Dylan and Daniel) led the way in the table tennis in Term 2, with the coaching staff amazed at the incredible Forehand Drive which both boys possess!

Aungier Students were again involved in the promotion of Refugee Week. The motto for Refugee Week this year was “#WithRefugees”. Members of the Aungier SRC were fantastic in their efforts to share the positive contributions that some notable refugees have contributed to Australian society. Announcements were read out across the Waverley College Community each morning including profiles on Anh Do and Dr Munjed Al Muderis. This was followed by a prayer titled, “A Place to Call Home”:

A Place to Call Home – A Prayer for Refugee Week

Compassionate God,

No one is a stranger to you

and no one is ever far from your loving care.

Watch over those who are separated

from their loved ones and homeland;

those who fear persecution

and hope for a better life in our community.

May we reach out in welcome

to all those who arrive as refugees,

embracing one another so that

together your hope O God

will be our future.

We make this prayer

through Christ our Lord.

Amen

Students in Years 5, 7 and 9 completed the NAPLAN testing in Term 2. This testing was completed online for the first time, which all students seemed to adjust to well. Aungier students worked hard through the Half Yearly Examination block.  Aungier Academic Prefect, Andre Vumbuca, addressed his House prior the exams with wise words. “Creating strong study habits and ensuring preparation is thorough, is a key to academic success now and in the future”.

It was wonderful to sign off on all the Gold Awards that were issued in great numbers across Aungier House. The Aungier Man of the Week Award has proved to be an exciting new initiative in Aungier House where students who go above and beyond are recognised at the House Assembly. This term, we celebrated the achievements of Digger Callander (Year 5) who made a tremendous effort in driving the Beanies for Brain Cancer campaign, as well as Matthew Gallagher (Year 11) who gave up his time to help scribe for another younger Aungier student who unfortunately had a broken arm during the Half Yearly Examinations.

On a sad note, we recently received new that Mr McCormack will be moving on from Waverley College. I would like to sincerely thank Mr David McCormack for his services to students in Aungier – particularly those students in Aungier Group 6. Mr McCormack is such a dedicated, friendly and approachable mentor and always gave a great deal to ensuring those students in his company got each day off to a positive start. We congratulate Mr McCormack on the news of his recent engagement and wish him well in all his future endeavours. Good luck and God bless!

Term 3 will once again see many exciting and challenging events for Aungier House. Our Year 12 students will be continuing to work hard in the HSC Trial Examinations (6th August – 20th August). Term 3 will mark the end of the Winter Sport Season (hopefully with plenty of CAS titles!) and the commencement of the Track & Field Season.  The Waverley College Cadet Unit will be off to camp for the Annual Bivouac, and we will say farewell to our departing Year 12 students who graduate with a farewell Mass and Assembly at the end of term (28th September).

I would like to congratulate all students in Aungier House for the continued positive efforts in Semester One. I would also like to wish all students the very best as we move into a new term, which will be the final term for some. I look forward to catching up with all students and families in Term 3.

Have a wonderful break!
