A big thank you to all parents and carers who have generously donated their sons’ outgrown uniforms to the Secondhand Clothing Pool.

This provides someone else with the opportunity to purchase a secondhand uniform well below the new price, whilst at the same time, raising funds for the College through the Parents’ Association.

We are steadily rebuilding stock levels and are so pleased to be able to offer some more items for sale. These are mostly academic uniform items with a few PE uniforms.

Email us to check on stock or pop in!

$30 Buy Back Scheme

The Secondhand Clothing Pool will gladly accept the donation of all clean and wearable current uniform items for resale. There is a $30 ‘buy back scheme’ for the donation of Blazers and All Weather Jackets in excellent condition.

Conductor Emeritus: Vale Paul Goodchild

Paul was a prodigious talent, joining the Sydney Symphony Orchestra at the age of 18, and remaining an active member for 42 years, ultimately being appointed Associate Principal Trumpet. Paul sadly passed away from cancer last Tuesday. He and his late father had a long association with the College. Paul graduated from Waverley in 1978, and Cliff was the Conductor at the College for 40 years, and had the College’s Senior Concert band named in his honour. Our thoughts and prayers are with Paul’s family and friends.

Homework and Revision

The debate about the value of homework gains attention and different perspectives from time to time. I appreciate the importance of family time together, the need for children to play, time out in nature, and physical activity, which are all connected to our overall wellbeing. However, the value of homework and revision is very well explained in Mrs Elizabeth Watson’s article in this newsletter. Getting the balance right across all of these elements is perhaps the right pathway.

Music Camp

Congratulations to our Music department and our musicians on their recent music camp. I have heard very positive feedback about their development and performances whilst away. For further information please read Mr Chris Balkizas’ report in the newsletter.

NAPLAN

Just as the current Years 5, 7 and 9 students are preparing for NAPLAN 2022, last week the 2021 NAPLAN results were uploaded onto the My School Website. The Waverley College student progress measure places our Year 5, 7 and 9 2021 cohort’s growth close to students with the same starting score and similar backgrounds across all domains of reading, writing and numeracy. Student progress is the most important measure for parents, teachers and the wider community, as it is such a valuable diagnostic tool.

Some highlights from the 2021 results are that the Year 7 cohort growth is strong across all domains, with numeracy demonstrating the most significant improvement. Over all testing domains, Year 7 results are above or well above average Australian students. Similarly, Year 9 reading, writing and numeracy scores are above all Australian students as per the table below.

NAPLAN table 2022

NAPLAN participation 2022

Beyond the My School Website, we always conduct a more extensive review of results and growth compared to schools who are statistically similar, enabling the College to identify areas of strength, targets and students who require diverse learning support. Some of the highlights from our analysis are that the combined literacy and numeracy scores of Year 7 Waverley College students, and the writing scores of Year 9 students, when compared to boys in statistically similar schools, trends in an upward direction.

The most valuable data from NAPLAN results highlights what we need to do to support our students in the future. The overall results indicate that students starting at the College in Years 5 and 7 need support in reading, writing, spelling and grammar. The programs that we have in place ensure that student growth in all domains is consistent with students of similar starting scores and backgrounds from Year 5 2019 to Year 7 2021, and Year 7 2019 to Year 9 2021.

What is particularly pleasing to note, is that the work we have been doing in our Year 7 and 8 Literacy programs in 2019-2020 have seen the student growth in writing improve significantly from the rate of growth in 2017-2019. Please note, that we do not have a set of results from 2020, as NAPLAN did not run due to COVID-19 restrictions.

We will continue to work on improving student growth, particularly in literacy, through the introduction of The Writer’s Toolbox in the Junior School and Learning Support groups in the Senior School. We will look to expand this program in the future to improve student grammar and punctuation, as well as sentence, paragraph and essay writing.

Spelling Mastery lessons are delivered to most Year 7 students (not just those students in Learning Support groups) in classes taught by specially-trained Direct Instruction teachers. This research-proven pedagogy engages students in intensive practices, utilising the articulatory loop, to memorise important knowledge and skills, resulting in a reduction in cognitive load and enabling deeper learning.

Uniform Shop Update

The Uniform shop has informed me that the new student lightweight rain jacket should be available in store for the start of Term 2 (maybe even late next week). There will also be a Supporters’ scarf, umbrella and rain jacket available in the coming weeks. A student hoodie and lightweight long sleeve training jersey are also now in stock for the colder winter days approaching, as part of our co-curricular suite.

Students of the World Ecology Group (SOTWEG)

I congratulate the students of both St Clare’s College and Waverley College who have created a new collaboration across their respective Ecology Committees. I look forward to working with them, and hearing about their shared strategies to both educate others, and reduce our impact on the planet. For further information please read student James Peate’s report in the newsletter.

Student Congratulations

Kai Gregory (Year 8) won two very prestigious awards this season as part of the Coogee Competitive Surf Team: Age Champion (best overall across six events: surf swim, boards, ironman, sprint, 1k run and flags), and Best Competitor (#1 Competitor in Water at Surf Carnivals).

Kai was invited to join the Senior Team at the Australian National Championships in Coolangatta on 2 and 3 April, and will compete in the ironman, surf rescue, along with sprint, surf swim, boards and relays. Congratulations Kai!

NSW Health Changes to Self-Isolation Requirements for Close and Household Contacts who Have Recovered from COVID-19

On Monday evening, the Minister signed the Public Health (COVID-19 Self-Isolation) Order Amendment (No 1) Order 2022. The Amending Order amends the Public Health (COVID-19 Self-Isolation) Order to exempt a person who is a close or household contact from the requirement to self-isolate if the person has had COVID-19 in the previous 12 weeks (up from the previous 8 weeks).

This means that if a student or staff member who has recovered from COVID-19 comes into contact with someone with COVID-19 within 12 weeks after they are released, they will generally not need to self-isolate or get a test. They can continue to go to school or work unless they have new COVID-19 symptoms.

Reminder for those who are close or household contacts:

The Curve of Forgetting – It’s More Important Than You May Realise

German psychologist Hermann Ebbinghaus (1850-1909), conducted the pioneer study on the pattern of memory retention. His ‘forgetting curve’ hypothesised the decline of memory retention over time. Although Ebbinghaus’ research dates back to the 1880s, it is still widely used and highly regarded. In 2015, a research team led by Murre and Dros, successfully reproduced his findings and concluded that his methods and theories still held true.

The Forgetting Curve, or the Ebbinghaus Curve of Forgetting, shows how learned information slips out of our memories over time – unless we take action to keep it there.

The steepest drop in memory happens quickly after learning, so it’s important to revisit the information you’ve learned sooner rather than later. After that, regular reviews will help to reinforce it. But you can leave longer and longer gaps between these review sessions. This is known as ‘spaced learning.’

Doing this, will help to reinforce your learning, and improve your power of recall, so that you can remember what you’ve learned in the long term. Other strategies you can use to improve your memory are: overlearning information, making what you want to learn meaningful, and challenging your memory regularly.

2022 Wellbeing Survey

During Week 9, all students took part in the annual wellbeing survey. The College continually seeks a greater partnership with your sons and values their perspective.

To help us work better with your son’s journey through adolescence, we like to know from their perspective, what is working well with our Wellbeing system, and importantly, what we can improve on.

The data collected through the survey is being analysed by the Heads of House, Psychologists, Director of Identity & Student Formation, and Deputy Principal – Staff and Student Wellbeing, allowing us to make decisions as we work alongside your sons at the College.

This data will help inform our wellbeing structures, processes and support mechanisms for all students.

Senior Students in Braidwood

Key Points

Key points already extracted from this year’s survey include:

Senior Students

Importantly, students had the opportunity of providing affirmation for what we term ‘upstanders.’ These are the students who look out for their peers, and say ‘no’ to bullies.

We congratulate the following students in 2022 who were identified as ‘Upstanders.’

Kayden Baker (Conlon), Rhys Ferguson (Aungier), Felix Turini (Tevlin), Lachlan Henry Grant (Conlon), Daniel McSweeny (Brennan), Xavier Scally (Brennan), Daniel Risk (O’Connor), Billy Lagos (Conlon), Charlie Smith (Aungier), Lewis Hamilton (Brennan), Toby Johnson (Brennan), Achilles Zanapalis (Aungier), Axel Stapleton (Tevlin), Bailey Gosbell (Lacey), Christian Kitas (Conlon), Cy Preketes (Green), Dylan Varcoe (Brennan), Harvey O’Malley (O’Connor), Isaac Occhiuto (O’Connor), Noah Tofaeono (Quinn), Toby Davidson (Aungier), Charlie Gibbins (Brennan), Dash McDonough (Tevlin), Ngakau Hiroti (Lacey), Will Carter (Aungier), Hopper Dyke-Miller (Brennan).

As in previous years, those students who, according to their classmates, are making poor decisions with regards to their peer interactions, will be spoken to by their Heads of House and their parents notified.

It was great to note that there were only three students identified as bullies in this year’s survey. This number continues to decline each year.

Balancing Technology and Social Media in Children and Adolescents

Much of the wellbeing team’s role at the College involves building greater capacity in our students in using mobile technology and social media.

In 2022, The Kidman Centre UTS is continuing to offer free online workshops delivered by clinical psychologists, to equip children, teenagers, and their parents with practical and evidence-based psychological skills.

Thier next workshop assists parents with balancing their child’s use of technology and social media. We know that technology and social media can bring about many benefits when used appropriately. It can enhance social connections and even be used as a learning tool. However, we often hear from many parents they have difficulties knowing how to effectively balance their child’s technology use.

Mobile phone

This workshop will help parents tackle these concerns and introduce key parenting skills to facilitate effective technology and social media use.

When: Monday, 11 April 2022, 6-7pm via Zoom.

May Procession

Sunday, 1 May 2022

Our annual May Procession is fast approaching, early in Term 2, and will occur on Sunday, 1 May from 12pm to 1:30pm, in the Centenary Quad, here at Waverley College. Students will need to be in the Quadrangle by 11:30am.

This wonderful celebration of our College founder, Blessed Edmund Rice, and Mary our Mother, is a compulsory event for all students. As such, full school uniform including blazer and tie should be worn.

Students will be required to get their names marked off by their Mentor upon arrival.

Parent Event – ‘It’s Time We Talked’ – Save the Date

Tuesday, 26 April 2022, 5:30pm

‘It’s Time We Talked’ is a violence-prevention initiative that supports young people, parents, schools, government and the community sector, to understand and address the influence of pornography.

The program grew out of Maree Crabbe’s work with young people in secondary schools and community settings.

Maree noticed that pornography was increasingly playing a role in how young people learn about, think about and experience sexuality. The young people she worked with were keen to talk about pornography, but the adults in their lives often had no idea about pornography’s prevalence or influence – and those who did, often didn’t feel equipped to have the conversations.

These observations led to more questions, research, planning and writing. With significant philanthropic support, ‘It’s Time We Talked’ began in 2009.

Following a presentation to staff earlier in the day, Maree will be presenting to parents that evening.

Terms 2-3 Winter Uniform

All students are required to be in winter uniform from the start of Term 2 to the end of Term 3. This includes blazer and tie. The College has high expectations of our students, particularly when travelling to and from school on public transport. As was the case last year, students failing to do this will be subject to a Friday detention.

The positive message you give to the public through your uniform and appearance is a clear statement of what it means to be a Waverley College student, and your pride in yourselves and the College.

Blazer and tie

Sometimes students will take the Easter break as an opportunity to experiment with different hairstyles. The expectation is that students will meet the following guidelines on their return to the College:

Parents are asked to support the College with these expectations. If students do not comply with a request to address any breaches by their Head of House, they will then have three options:

1)   Go immediately to the barber at Charing Cross and have the inappropriate haircut rectified

2)   Rectify the inappropriate haircut themselves with clippers supplied by the College

3)   Return home until such time as the inappropriate haircut is rectified.

Year 5 Camp

Year 5 Camp Stanwell Tops

Our Year 5 Students were full of excitement to be attending their first camp as a Waverley College student. Stanwell Tops, which is located between Sydney and Wollongong, was nothing short of a postcard. The picturesque treetop mountain range, with the occasional waterfall in the distance, amazed all the students throughout the camp.

The boys quickly settled into camp life, getting stuck into the wide range of activities on offer by the Stanwell Tops.

These included:

In spite of all the activities taking place, the boys were largely more excited about the dorms they were staying in with some of their mates. It created plenty of opportunities for students to connect with each other and create new friendships.

Another highlight for the boys was the food options on offer, it’s fair to say no students left camp unhappy or hungry, but maybe a little damp from the rain!

Co-Curricular Sport/ External Sporting Achievements

As Term 1 Sport came to an end, it wasn’t quite the start to sport we had hoped for, with all the interruptions and cancellations. I would like to commend all teams for the resilience during this tough season; all students and coaches handled it with class.

Congratulations Water Polo B Team

There were some fantastic results throughout the season, but I’d like to acknowledge the Water Polo B team. They played all six of their matches that were scheduled for the half season, and finished the term undefeated. It was a huge achievement and we know they will continue it into Term 4.

Welcome to 5 Blue!

5 Blue have been having a sensational Term 1. They are a fantastic group of boys who always strive to uphold all the College values. They enjoy each other’s company, and they should be very proud of their collaboration and cooperation.

5 Blue have been exploring ways in which to have a ‘Growth Mindset’, and the students continue to impress with the way they persevere and challenge themselves, while having a positive attitude.

Here is a little bit about some of the activities we have been exploring in class.

Philosophy Inquiry Sessions

5 Blue have been doing philosophy inquiry sessions where we sit in a circle and use a structured process to discuss and explore various topics. We present a range of ideas, and can agree and disagree with others, as well as challenge them.

It has been a fun way to develop strong discussion skills as well as our critical thinking. We aren’t allowed to interrupt each other until it’s our turn, which is super hard. Even our teacher struggles to wait her turn!

5 Blue Philosophy Class

Where Children Sleep by James Mollison

The book, Where Children Sleep, captures the lives and situations of diverse children around the world — told through individual portraits and environmental pictures of their bedrooms.

It’s great for understanding the enormous range of situations that children around the world are brought up in, and for gaining perspective.

5 Blue wrote their own version, describing their world in the third person.

Here is an example from the book, followed by one from our class.

Where Children Sleep (Book)

Where Children Sleep (book excerpt)Rio From 5 Blue

Rio is a nine-year-old boy who lives in Sydney, Australia. He lives in an apartment with his parents, two sisters, a dog and a cat. Rio goes to school where there are lots of policies and rules. It takes 15 minutes to walk there and five minutes to drive. There is lots of traffic where Rio lives.

In his room, he has a desk that his dad normally uses. He has lots of fun in the room, especially when he is home alone. Rio has an amazing view of Bondi Beach and sometimes Bronte. Sometimes he goes outside to play with his sister if it is good weather.

Rio likes playing video games such as Roblox and Mario Kart. His favourite sports are Touch Football and Hockey. He loves going outside to hit the hockey ball around and playing with the rugby ball. Rio also has a pool where he loves practising for swimming carnivals and playing and jumping around.

When he grows up, he wants to be a Psychiatrist.

About Me Magazine Covers

5 Blue boys have been getting to know their new classmates, as well as delving into themselves. They have explored their own multiple intelligence strengths and interests, and created personalised magazine covers as a visual representation.

Here are some examples:

Bertie and The Crazy Waves Mag

Fletcher and Dash's Mags

Exploring Banqer to Learn Financial Literacy

Our class has been using Banqer, which is an online platform that teaches financial literacy to students all over the world. It teaches how finances, rent, bills, super, tax and loans work. We get money each week for being a part of the class, as well as rewards for great work. We also get paid for our class jobs.

We set up our bills such as electricity and pay rent automatically. There is also a class leaderboard of your net worth, achievements and savings. You have different accounts for your money like your savings and everyday account. Try to keep all your money in your everyday account before you start getting jobs, because you don’t want to go into debt when your bills come out.

With your money you can buy houses and cars or scooters. You can also get extra money by becoming a delivery driver if you have the right car. Did you know that Banqer is used by more than 170,000 people around Australia?

Last Saturday saw our first full round of internal trials, as well as our As and 1sts Football squads play in the CAS Blitz. There was a great level of enthusiasm and enjoyment from all students and coaches, in being able to get out onto the fields and courts.

Our 1sts Football and 8As Football were certainly the standouts on Saturday, with these two teams winning all of their matches.

The postponed Summer Awards Assembly has also been rescheduled to next Thursday, and we will hopefully get to recognise those award winners then.

Hopefully, we are able to get on again this weekend, and start to finalise selections.

Aussie SLS Titles – Good Luck Everyone!

We do have a number of students competing at the Aussie SLS titles over the next week for various surf clubs, and we wish all of these students the very best with their performances.

AFX Cadet Camp – Year 9

Next week, our Year 9 students along with other members of the Cadet unit, are at the AFX Cadet Camp in Majura, ACT. The camp activities look fantastic. Giving all students the opportunity to get outside their comfort zone, in an outdoor educational environment, is critical for students who go to a school in an urban area like Waverley. We wish all of the staff and members of the unit the very best for the week.

Reminder About Leave For A Saturday Commitment

Any student who requires leave for a Saturday commitment, must make an application in writing to me via email, with two weeks’ notice where possible.

If any student is absent due to illness or injury, it is College policy that a medical certificate or COVID-19 test result is required. A maximum of two exemptions will be granted per year. Failure to attend will result in lower gradings and detentions being issued.

Information For Term 2

Holiday Training and Trial Opportunities

As the start of Term 2 is a very short first week, with students commencing on Thursday, and Waverley playing its first round of competitive fixtures on Saturday, 30 April, we will provide holiday training and trial opportunities for students who are available.

Selections and Playing Attire

Selections will be ongoing during Term 2, and all staff and coaches will do their best to grade students accordingly.

By the start of Term 2, all students must have all necessary playing attire for that first weekend.

A Positive Start!

Last weekend, it was so pleasing to see that Queens Park was alive and well! Rugby was back! Students were involved in training sessions and some internal trials throughout the morning which, thankfully, were able to go ahead despite some soggy conditions.

With a long season ahead, it is important that our coaching staff have players well prepared for full contact. As players return to Rugby, coaches have been able to assist in developing some of the technical areas, such as the tackle, to ensure injuries can be avoided.

Further to this, coaches have refreshed our young men about the key protocols used such as the MAYDAY procedure at the scrum, as to ensure that players are well prepared with key safety terminology during the games played.

Key Law Changes

In 2022, it is important that all our players are up to date with some key law changes. This includes the introduction of the 50:22 rule as well as the update around the ‘Goal Line Dropouts.’ It is extremely important that our players are ‘switched on’ when it comes to understanding these rules, as these changes could very much be used to our advantage.

Holiday Training Schedule

Please note that a training schedule will be sent out in the coming week for the Easter holidays. This will be sent out through the Waverley College App (a reminder that Team App will no longer be used).

If families have made plans for the upcoming holiday period, we certainly support this, and hope you enjoy the time away. At the same time, if students have no plans to travel, we certainly would love to see them at training over the break.

Team Selections

As team selections are gradually made over the coming weeks, in preparation for the fixture against The King’s School on Saturday, 30 April, please know that teams which are initially selected, are not set or final.

Coaches are mindful that some players have been unable to train, as they have been impacted by COVID-19 in recent weeks, and others may have been involved in various school activities and camps.

Coaches are working hard to ensure players are appropriately graded, but this can take time. We thank players and parents for their patience, as we work through this important process.

Have a great week!

WAVERLEY TO WIN!

Thank you to all who attended the College’s Cricket Presentation Evening. The night consisted of an arrangement of awards, farewells and thank you messages to those who have served our community over this past season. We were also lucky to have Sydney Thunder star, Jay Lenton, as our guest speaker, who shared many of his insights and experiences.

Cricket Presentation Evening 2022

Congratulations

Firstly, congratulations to the following students who received the Coach’s Award:

Furthermore, a very special congratulations to Hunter Eldridge of the Year 10A, who received the Br Murphy Award for best overall cricketer, with 187 points. One of Hunter’s most notable performances this season was his 51 against St Aloysius’ College.

Farewell to Year 12 Players

Also, thank you and farewell to the following Year 12 players: Maxim Brooks, William Dodd, Jack Rigg, Sachiel Bass, Liam Joll, Hugo Defina-Sperando, Patrick Abrahams, Edward Regan, Patrick Abrahams and Daniel McSweeny.

Despite the setbacks of COVID-19 and the wet weather, their balance of competitiveness and their upbeat manner has constantly inspired many of the younger cricketers. They are young men who can be counted on.

Season Wrap Up

Lastly, thank you to all involved this season. Especially to coaches and parents within the Supporters’ Group. This year has consisted of many challenges, and at times disappointment, as we have had to again navigate COVID-19 and the heavy onslaught of rain. However, as games were cancelled and disruptions occurred, the spirit of the cricket community could not be faulted.

I am looking forward to seeing you all again next season!

Thank you to our hardworking rank and staff, who are pulling together the final stores required to take 400 people into the field for seven days without electricity or running water or modern conveniences on AFX. The skills in planning and logistics that our seniors gain through AFX are invaluable assets that they will take with them into the adult world.

A reminder to all parents and cadets that Q Store is now closed, and any provisions not already collected for camp can be purchased from camping stores or military disposal stores.

When our recruits return from AFX, they will have completed their co-educational commitment as part of the Waverley College Cadet Unit. As I said to the cadets last Friday, they now join a shared history with every Waverley College student who has come before them, spanning 110 years. This special connection through Cadets they will always have, regardless of whether they continue with Cadets or not, and is a connection that is recognised every year through the Annual Reveille Mess.

An Intention Form on Google will be available in the school holidays for all cadets wanting to continue their youth development experience, particularly if they have leadership in their sights. The Promotions Courses that the Cadet Unit offers, provide exemplary incremental training for leadership roles, and these courses run in the June/July school holidays every year. This year’s courses will be in the first week of the school holidays, at Winbourne Conference Centre, Mulgoa.

X Platoon Exercise Tango Charlie

Over the weekend, X Platoon completed a training bivouac at Douglas Park, to consolidate their fieldskills in preparation for AFX. In rain and boggy conditions, they honed their skills in navigation, ratel, shelters, fires and survival. An impromptu lesson in 4WD vehicle retrieval was a bonus, and we thank the Pizzol family for their commitment to the Cadet Unit in this regard!

Congratulations to WO2 Tom Martin, SGT Gemma Proctor, SGT Max Van Buuren, SGT Declan Strong for your tenacity and fortitude on the weekend. Thank you to DS Conacher-Smith and DS Martin for pulling together an excellent training program.

Joint Logistics Unit Expedition

Some of our dedicated Warrant Officers and Sergeants assisted with the collection of vehicles and Army stores on Tuesday in preparation for AFX. A trip to the Logistics Unit is an eye-opening experience in terms of the scale and precision of Army logistics at Holsworthy Barracks. We thank you WO2 Mitchell Cahill, WO2 Darius Hall, WO2 Matteo Paolella, and SGT Paul Muir for their excellent work ethic and service to the Unit.
