As your son’s school career draws to a close, the time has come to look at what’s ahead. This includes starting to clear out what lies behind you, such as your Waverley uniforms.

We hope that many of you have benefitted from the Waverley College Secondhand Clothing Pool over your years at the College, and would love for you to consider gifting back to the College community by donating your son’s current uniforms, (academic and sports as well as bags), to the Secondhand Clothing Pool. Donations of all current uniform items, in clean and wearable condition for resale, are greatly appreciated.

Have You Heard About the $30 Buy Back Scheme?

This will provide someone else with the opportunity to purchase a secondhand uniform at reduced cost, whilst at the same time raising funds for the College through the Parents’ Association. A $30 ‘buy back scheme’ is on offer for the donation of Blazers and All Weather Jackets in excellent condition. Contact the Parent Volunteers at the Secondhand Clothing Pool via email to arrange the ‘Buy Back’: clothingpool@waverley.nsw.edu.au

Where Can Donations Be Left?

Many thanks for your continued support of the Parents’ Association who are driving initiatives to support our students and community.

We wish you and your boys all the very best for their post-school adventures, and hope that they will remember their time at Waverley, fondly.

2022 Co-Curricular Preferences for Current Year 5 Students

Next week (Week 8), current Year 5 students will be sent a Google Form that will allow them to choose their sporting preferences for 2022. I have already had a large number of students wanting to change their previous preferences for next year, so this is the best opportunity for all returning students to select their sports for 2022.

Can I please ask you to have a discussion with your son about what sports he would like to select, prior to him completing the form. He will need to select a first and second preference for both the 2022 Summer and Winter Co-Curricular season.

The sports he can choose from for Summer Co-Curricular sports (Terms 1 and 4) include:

  1. Basketball
  2. Cricket
  3. Touch Football
  4. Tennis
  5. Water Polo

The sports he can choose from for Winter Co-Curricular sports (Terms 2 and 3) include:

  1. AFL
  2. Football (Soccer)
  3. Rugby Union

Walk The World Walkathon

The Walk The World Walkathon has been a great chance for students, families and staff to stay active and fundraise for worthwhile charities that have been an integral part of the annual Walkathon in the Junior School.

We have now extended the conclusion date of the event to the end of Week 8, Friday, 26 November. This allows further opportunity to get others involved and to raise more money for such great causes. Please encourage your son, and other families in the Waverley community, to get involved to help the history of this event continue for many years to come.

The finance department has now made it easier to separately donate to the various charities through bank transfer. The bank ACC details are listed below:

BSB 062124

A/C 00903139

Bank: Commonwealth

Reference: Walk the World

We have already had some amazing achievements from students for their distances traveled and for the money raised. Let’s keep this going, and finish the event with an increase in participants and fundraising.

Many thanks for your efforts thus far, it is significantly appreciated and doesn’t go unnoticed.

End of Term 4

It has certainly been a challenging year for everyone and with less than two weeks to go, the boys are looking forward to their respective summer holidays. Please encourage your son to enjoy his last days of schooling for 2021 and finish in good spirits. There is value and important lessons learnt in finishing a job well, and hanging in there until the very end.

I am certainly grateful for the way our community has supported each other throughout the year. I am also grateful to frontline workers who have kept our society as safe as possible, and able to operate as best it can during these difficult circumstances, including putting their own health at greater risk. Thank you to all of our police, first responders, health workers, nurses, doctors, and hospital workers.

When you further unpack what roles are important to keep our society operational and safe, you realise that so many industries play an integral part — education, food and agriculture, manufacturing, corrections workers, postal service workers, public transit workers, grocery store workers, transportation and logistics, food service, shelter and housing, finance, information technology and communication, energy, media, legal, engineers, water and wastewater workers etc.

COVID-19 Update

In a large community where social distancing is nigh impossible, a multi-layered approach is our best option in reducing risks, which is why we continue to strongly encourage vaccination, for all staff and students who are eligible, against COVID-19. The staff at Waverley College are all proudly vaccinated. Vaccination is one of the most effective ways in minimising the spread of COVID-19. These vaccines will protect you from getting severely ill if you get COVID-19.

If your son has been vaccinated against COVID-19, could you please send us their COVID-19 Certificate or Immunisation History Statement in the form of a PDF to email address healthcentre@waverley.nsw.edu.au

This will be stored confidentially on your son’s medical records. Thank you to all of those parents, carers and students who have already sent these through to us. It is fantastic to see the continually rising numbers of fully vaccinated students across the College.

Woollahra Photographic and Short Film Prize

Congratulations to the students who entered the Woollahra Photographic and Short Film Prize for 2021. The competition calls all young photographers or film makers to submit work within a range of categories. This year, the competition introduced a new section showcasing ‘inclusivity.’ Special congratulations to Luke White in Year 10, who on Wednesday night, won First Prize in the Mayor’s choice awards for his entry ‘Street Mirror.’

Ethics Olympiad

Congratulations to the following Year 9 students who represented the College in the Ethics Olympiad today. They had a variety of tasks and decisions to grapple with, and performed very well — Lachlan Miranda, Campbell Porteus, Declan McAuliffe, James Medland, James Birbas and Oliver Malzard.

Amazing Swim

Congratulations to Old Boy Ned Wieland (2019), on his remarkable achievement last weekend in breaking the record for most number of laps swum of Bondi Beach. Ned completed 62 laps, some 48km, and was in the water for just under 12 hours. An amazing effort on the back of only seven weeks of training! Ned also raised over $24,000 for charity RU OK? which is close to his heart.

Old Boy Assistance Request

Old Boy Geordan Bates (2017), is approaching the end of his university studies in media and psychology at UNSW. With two friends from Cranbrook, they had the idea to make a short documentary on the Australian icon, Don Ritchie. Ritchie lived near The Gap at Watsons Bay, and was responsible for saving 160+ people from suicide. He made it his life’s mission to dissuade as many people as possible from suicide, by offering them his calm words and a warm cup of tea in his nearby home.

The documentary concept has received positive feedback on the script from Hugh Jackman and Emile Sherman (Academy-award winning producer), and Hugo Weaving has agreed to come onboard as the voice of Don. The group has partnered with mental health charity, Gotcha 4Life and are seeking to raise $50,000 over the next two months to complete the project. All donations are tax-deductible through the Australian Cultural Fund (ACF) website.

>>> Click here to view the ACF website.

I commend the group as this project has the potential to impact lives far beyond our local community. The expected completion date is in September 2022. You may like to support this cause or know a corporate sponsor that would be interested.

Year 11 Assembly

Unfortunately, the rain caused us to postpone our Year 12 (2022 cohort) leadership assembly today, that was going to be live-streamed to parents. It will now be held on Monday, 22 November at 11:50am, and a link will be emailed by Ms Walsh.

The College would like to extend an invitation to our Presentation Day events on Wednesday, 1 December to help us celebrate our successes in 2021 as a College Community.

Presentation Day is a compulsory event for all students to attend and attendance rolls will be taken.

There will be two presentations:

The Campus Team are currently looking to recruit a summer casual to work with the Team to help manage all aspects of school operations.

Ideally, you would be an Old Boy who knows the layout of the school site, and can commit to an immediate start. You would then remain on staff until the end of February, 2022. Working hours are 7:30am–3:30pm, Monday to Friday.

The types of tasks you would be involved in would be gardening and grounds maintenance, classroom and event setups, furniture moving and general maintenance of both the Senior and Junior Campuses.

You will need a current WWCC number to be eligible to work at the College.

If you are interested, and would like more information, please contact campus@waverley.nsw.edu.au

The conclusion of the semester is fast approaching, and in order to prepare for 2022, it would be appreciated if parents could advise, before the end of Term 4, if your son will be discontinuing his private music tuition at Waverley College at the end of this year.

For cancellation of tuition, please email: kkossenberg@waverley.nsw.edu.au notifying if your son will be DISCONTINUING — please include:

The remaining students will automatically rollover into Semester 1 2022, and the billing will appear on your Term 1, 2022 school fees account.

Your son may wish to take up another instrument or join one of the many Ensembles. If so, the Music Department uses an electronic form. Parents need to complete the following form for students wishing to commence private instrumental/vocal lessons. Full details of the terms and conditions are set out and must be accepted prior to completing the form.

>>> Click here to view the Private Music Tuition Form which parents must complete for students to commence private instrumental/vocal lessons in 2022.

Instruments that require repairs, or any student discontinuing or leaving Waverley College, should return their instrument to the Music Department before the conclusion of Term 4, 2022 by Friday, 26 November.

Good luck and best wishes to the great men of Waverley College for this Saturday, as they compete against Cranbrook School in their first competitive trial match of the season. All cricketers have worked extremely hard in fine tuning their skills, in what has been a very short time frame since the easing of restrictions and a return to school sport.

The past two weeks have seen many notable performances, and highly competitive cricket played. Carter Steyn retired at 32 on Saturday with a well-timed shot over the bowler’s head to go one bounce for four. Moreover, some aggressive cricket was exemplified by Liam Wood, as he pushed the ball around between fielders to keep the opposition on their toes.

Connor Andrews’ in-swingers were also hard to pick by the batsmen, as the middle stump became his closest companion. Meanwhile, in the Year 10 internal trial match, many were quietly disappointed when Hunter Elridge’s hat trick ball was pushed over the fingertips of mid off.

Lastly, a noteworthy observation has been the return of the likes of Thomas Walker and Andrew Maloney, who have ‘seen the light’ and returned to cricket this season to take part in the College’s oldest sport.

A final congratulations to Eddie Regan who has been selected as the 1st XI Captain. The respect that Eddie receives from his peers, combined with his strong cricketing knowledge, will put the team in a competitive position this season. The team will be coached by Mr Kroll and Mr McNamara.

1st XI for Saturday, 20 November at Woollahra Oval 2/3

Searching for Information

It is difficult to remember a time when you couldn’t ‘Google’ anything you wanted to know. Students can’t remember a time without it, but in fact there were decades (even centuries), when it didn’t exist.

Below are some possible ‘treasure hunts’ for your sons to undertake over the holidays.

Treasure Hunt One

Look into the history of search engines (e.g. Lycos was a search engine that started in 1994 with 54,000 items available!!)
