From the Convenor of Cricket, John McCallum

There have been great steps taken by Cricketers to improve many of their skills, and this collectively is bearing fruit with some strong team performances. A pleasing aspect is that teams are adopting a growth mindset, and know that by putting in the effort (and having fun whilst doing this), their teams will improve and they can very proud of their development.

There are also some cracking events coming up, including a Parents v Students Cricket afternoon and social BBQ on Tuesday, 3 December. There will be matches on Queens Park 1 and 2 from 4pm, so all boys and parents and whole families can register via the event page on Team App, and this will be a great fun-filled way to end the Year. Cricket is most enjoyable when taken with friends, family, and a BBQ, so don’t save your best cover drive for Xmas day, with all welcome from 4-7pm. If any cricketers or parents are yet to download Team App, can they please do so and then register into the Waverley College Cricket page. This contains all the latest news, scores, photos and weekly fixtures for the Senior school teams.

Some highlights on the field include:
• An amazing 8-run victory to the 1st XI against Barker, with Waverley taking the final 5 wickets for just 12 runs. Maxim Brooks was the chief destroyer claiming 6/16 from 12 fantastic overs, then Maxim stepped up in the 2nd innings with 73 runs. Eddie Regan, also from Yr 9, scored 55 in the 1st innings and took 2 wickets In this great performance. The entire team requires skill and partnerships in order to chase the 360 run target set by Knox this weekend.
• Will Dodd continues to pile on runs in the 10As, with 88 against Barker, aided well by skipper Daniel McSweeny with 48 not out. Ed Sullivan posted a strong 57 In the 3rds, Ollie Rinder a fluent 44 in the 2nds and Lucas Ryan scored a stylish 48 in the 8As to round out some great batting performances.

In 2019, Waverley placed two teams in the annual Tournament of Minds Competition – an event designed to challenge and enrich students across a range of disciplines. Each team member dedicated their spare time and effort in between other commitments to preparing and presenting a challenge focused on solving and portraying a current world issue or problem-related to one discipline -The Arts, Language Literature, Social Sciences or STEM.

‘TOM offers teams of students the opportunity to solve authentic, open-ended challenges that foster creative, divergent thinking whilst developing collaborative enterprise, excellence and teamwork.’

In 2020, Waverley is offering students the chance to participate in Tournament of Minds for their Winter Co-Curricular as part of the College’s dedication to providing a range of both academic and sport-related opportunities to represent the school.

We are seeking expressions of interest for students from 7* to 10 (*2020 year) who may be interested in participating in the 2020 team. Numbers are strictly limited to each year group due to the requirements of the competition. Further to this event, consideration will also be given to participation in other academic enrichment events such as the Term 2 Da Vinci Decathlon and Cluster Days.

Festival of Bands
On Friday, October 25, members of the various college ensembles were treated to workshops with John Morrison, one of Australia’s leading jazz musicians. That evening the John Morrison Trio thrilled the audience with their performance as did the members of the Cliff Goodchild and Matthew Coorey Concert Bands and the Senior and Junior Jazz bands. The boys lifted to another level after being inspired by their work with professional musicians.

Congratulations to Mr Daniel Williams for his organisation of this wonderful event. Thank you to the Music staff for their assistance.

Special thank you to Keiran Kossenberg and members of the Music supporters for assistance with the barbecue and the sale of refreshments.

Thank you to the students who sang at the Mass and contributed to the prayerful atmosphere.

Remembrance Day
The College Cadet band continued the tradition of playing at the Remembrance Day ceremony at Waverley Park. This service to the local community is a valued tradition and very much appreciated. Thank you to Mr Chris Blenkinsopp and the students involved.
The College held its’ own ceremony and was supported by a small brass ensemble lead by Samuel Tsaousis (Year 12). The Last Post and Reveille was expertly played by Daniel McSweeney (Year 9).

From the Library Technician, Aaron Speed-Johnson

So far this term, the Senior Library has hosted two events to celebrate literacy at Waverley College.

The Waterford Preschool attended the Senior Library’s annual ‘School Readiness’ Storytimes, where books on the theme of starting school were read to them. They listened eagerly to titles such as ‘Countdown to Kindergarten’ and ‘Wiffiy Wilson Goes to School’ and Cooper O’Donnell from Year 10 volunteered his time to share with the Pre-schoolers about his first day of Kindergarten.

Then the Senior Library hosted a series of lunchtime events to celebrate International Games Week 2019. This event has been set up to raise awareness of the social and educational benefits of play. Staff and students of Waverley College enjoyed activities such as testing out discovery mode in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, a living museum that allows the students to explore and learn about Ancient Greece and spending a relaxing lunch away from their computers playing a wide variety of board games.

The Library looks forward to hosting these successful events again in 2020.

From the Convenor of Swimming, Nicola Silsby

Last Friday, 1 November Waverley headed to North Sydney Pool for the first competition of the season, the St Aloysius Invitational.

The Waverley team looked strong from the start with our Year 12’s opening the night confidently, despite having only just returned from Year 12 retreat. A race record was broken in the first race so we knew the night was going to be highly competitive and we had to put our best foot forward.

Throughout the night we placed in many of the races, although sometimes only by a close margin, but the team dug deep and we started to see the points add up. A notable mention goes to Campbell Groves who stepped up to swim in the Open 400-meter Freestyle. As an under 14 swimmer he raced against 17 and 18-year old’s, and only narrowly missed out on third place, a great achievement!

Backstroke and freestyle were our standout events of the night where we achieved multiple wins throughout the various age groups. We also placed in each of the 100m Freestyle races, so congratulations to Liam Davis, Carter Hjorring and Campbell Groves.

The highlight of the night were the Waverley relay teams, with the Intermediate team taking wins in both the Medley and Freestyle relays. Well done to Oliver Elliott, Luke McClellan, Liam Davis, Leo Astridge, Scott Swinburn and Charlie Winkelmeier who made up those teams.

After wins in the final two relays, we were delighted to hear that once again we had taken the win! The boys’ outstanding performance led us to keep hold of the trophy for the third year in a row. We finished first on joint points with Saint Ignatius. All the boys who competed should be congratulated on a brilliant victory.

Waves to win!

The Rollercoaster of School Sport

The last two weeks have seen some continued outstanding performances as well as some tough losses for many teams but this is also the rollercoaster of school sport. Some of the impressive performances included, the 1st XI Cricket securing an unlikely victory against Barker with Maxim Brooks taking 6/11 off 12 overs and also scoring 77 runs with the bat. Unfortunately, they came up against a tough Knox side last Saturday and will be chasing a big total this week.

Our 1sts Basketball also secured a great victory against Barker away but suffered a big loss against Knox. However, all of these players will use the loss as motivation and continue to develop their resilience which is more important than winning and losing. The spirit in which these top teams play is always positive and the coaches and parents ride these highs and lows and are also such an integral part of the program.

Our Swim Squad tied with Riverview in 1st place at the St Aloysius invitational as well as putting in a great performance last Friday at the CAS South Harbour invitational at Trinity.

Congratulation to Tobias Malzard who rescently competed in a regional Taekwondo competition and was successful in winning his match, gaining a first-place gold medal. Toby will also sit his final grading in December and if successful will be presented with his senior black belt, which has required many years of training and dedication.

I also want to welcome back Kristof Frankowski, our Judo instructor, who has recently been laid up in hospital but is now back working with this sport. I also want to welcome back Mr Jeremy Roff and congratulate him on his recent nuptials and honeymoon.

We also farewelled one of our exchange students from South Africa’s Kearsney College, Luc Nazar. Luc and his family wanted to thank the Waverley College community for their welcome, generosity, as well as wish everyone the very best for the holiday break. The other two students, Joshua Groom and Tyga Pollock are with us until the end of the year but are certainly enjoying their time in Sydney and at Waverley. I also want to make special mention of the families hosting them – the Zlattner, Shearer and Scott families have been instrumental in providing such a positive time for these students.

If there are any current Year 9 students interested in travelling to Kearsney in 2020 or any other potential student exchange destination then I would ask them to contact me. I have also been informed from Will Frazer’s family that he is having a wonderful time in the USA on his student exchange and we are also looking forward to welcoming him back next year.

Most teams have only two weeks of activities left and I want to encourage all of them to finish strong. Our 2 day Cricketers and Water Polo teams have an extra week of sport. We will also be providing ongoing track and field training for any student in the holidays and a program will be published soon.

Good luck to all teams this week and ‘Go the Waves!’

From the Director of Preschool, Fiona MacGregor

Waterford Preschool was established by Waverley College in 1994. This week we celebrated 25 years of quality early childhood and care with our local community, previous educators and families and specialists who have been involved in the preschool over the years. Our special guests included Graham Leddie, Dr Marjorie O’Neill (MP) and Gai Suttie the inaugural director.

The preschool, however has a long history in the community dating back to 1924 when the land was purchased by the Kindergarten Union as a training college. In 1968 the current preschool building was constructed for the use of the Sydney Kindergarten College and was used as a demonstration preschool for their students. In 1981 the College becomes The Institute of Early Studies and in 1990 the College moves to Macquarie University and becomes the Institute of early childhood. Waverley College subsequently purchases the site and relocates their Junior School to the campus.

Helen Newman the Junior School Director at the time and Brother Wallace the Headmaster of Waverley College were willing to continue the operation of the government-funded preschool that was operating on the site. Priority was given to College staff, making it one of the first providers of corporate child care and one of the first independent schools to have a preschool on site. The preschool was named Waterford in honour of Edmund Rice the founder of the Christian Brothers. In 1808 in Waterford Ireland he was aware of the poverty and needs of the children roaming the streets and established what is known as the first-ever creche.

The preschool continues to be a centre of excellence with a focus on quality early childhood education and Care. In 1996 we received a rating of from the NSW department of education as exceeding the National Quality Standards which we are very proud of. Our preschool program is driven by our philosophy which recognises the early childhood years as an important and critical stage of life and learning. Our program is child-centred and holistic, with an emphasis on developing positive dispositions to learning and towards others.

Our learning environment is dynamic, multifaceted and exceedingly nurturing. We are staffed by highly educated early childhood teachers and educators who all have the wellbeing of the children and their families at heart. The team is very committed to inclusion in all it’s forms and positively supports the families in their parenting journey. Waterford preschool is truly a community hub supporting learning, connections and wellbeing.

It has been an absolute privilege to lead and manage such a wonderful institution such as Waterford Preschool. Thank you to Waverley College for your ongoing support.

Key Dates

Year 6 Graduation

Time: 5:30pm

Venue: Mary Immaculate Church followed by supper at the Junior School.

A more formal invitation will follow in the coming weeks.

World Teachers’ Day

On Friday we celebrated World Teachers’ Day. We took this opportunity to thank the teachers of Waverley for their hard work, skill, kindness and commitment to supporting the students in their care. It was lovely reading some of the heartfelt messages the boys had written to their teachers.

It is always wonderful to see teachers’ recognised for the work they do. On Saturday morning at the Waverley Junior School basketball matches a past student of Mr Harris’ came down to the courts to speak with him. This student wanted to thank and acknowledge Mr Harris for all the support and encouragement he had given him throughout his time in the Junior School. As a teacher, to know you have had such a positive impact on a child is incredibly rewarding.

Maroubra Fun Run

On Sunday, 27 October nine Waverley Junior School Boys participated in the Maroubra Fun Run at Maroubra. The boys came 3rd overall in the Primary School 4km run category out of 182 primary schools. Maddox Whitby took first place, with a time of 17:38 minutes followed by Peter Soumilas in 18:23 minutes. A big well done to all the following boys who also took part in the run:

Musica Viva

From Music Teacher, Michelle Rollins

Golden frogs, butterflies and whales. No – this is not science – it’s music!

On Monday, October 21, we were delighted to host two performances presented by the touring ensemble, Zeeko. Zeeko are part of the wonderful Musica Viva in schools program. This program organises professional musicians to visit schools and share their music, stories and experiences with students. More importantly, these musicians share their music digitally with us in the months leading up to the performance so that on the day the boys can identify the instruments, understand the structure of the music and be part of the performance. The four songs featured in the performance were – The Butterfly Effect, The Last Wave of the Golden Frog, Deepest Blue and Eatin’ them old words. All of these songs highlighted environmental issues in an effective, creative and fun way.

The boys loved adding body percussion and movement to the performance as well as singing along (in both English and Spanish) when invited. Some of the interesting sounds from Zeeko included the waterphone, singing into bottles with varying amounts of water, guitar distortions, squeaky toys, cajons (box drums), drum kit, bass guitar and voices. The performers used sound to represent different areas of the world including the Icelandic glaciers, cloud forests of Costa Rica, African rainforests, Madagascar and the Cook Islands.

One of my Year 6 music classes asked if I could organise the performers to come back and do the concert again – I think that means they really enjoyed it!

We look forward to working with Musica Viva again in 2020.

Festival Of The Bands

From Year 6 Red Student, Thomas Read

The festival of the bands is a night once a year where the bands of Waverley college get together and perform with a special guest. The Festival of the bands this year was held on October 25 and the guest was John Morrison and the Morrison Trio. The Waterford concert band was lucky enough to perform on the night. It was a great night and I would highly suggest going attending it in 2020.

Lunchtime Talk

From Literacy and Innovation Teacher, Mrs Natasha Zivanovic

The Junior School boys enjoyed guest speaker Nikita Strbac on Friday 25 October. They gained an insight into Nikita’s dedication towards Water Polo and how to balance training, school, social & family life. Nikita spoke about representing Australia in Water Polo and the importance of setting goals, having role models, determination, good habits and even being faced with disappointment.

The boys were engaged during the session and asked many questions.

A huge thank you to Nikita for giving up his time to inspire the younger Waverley generation.

Our next guest speaker is Dougs Roberts who will be in on Friday 1 November to talk to the boys about country Australia and the current drought situation.

If you would like to be a guest speaker, please contact me: nzivanovic@waverley.nsw.edu.au

Ducklings

I saw a softer side to the boys last week with the arrival of our ducklings.

This valuable hands on experience happening in our Learning Hub has promoted a sense of curiosity and has given the boys an insight to the responsibilities that come with life and new beginnings.

We will be sad to farewell our ducks on Friday.
