Debating: Another triumphant win

Achilles Zanapalis, Conor Ryan and Mackenzie Flitcroft

From the Convenor of Debating, Cassandra Foster

The Year 8 debating team consisting of Achilles Zanapalis, Conor Ryan and Mackenzie Flitcroft have won their quarter final debate and have progressed to the semi-finals. They are now ranked in the top four schools of over 70 schools around NSW who participate in the CSDA Debating Competition. This is the third debate in the finals series the boys have won. They were victorious over Mount St Benedict College and Bede Polding in Elimination Rounds 1 and 2.

After a long trip to Gilroy College in Castle Hill on the very last night of school after the athletics carnival, the boys won triumphantly over some excellent debaters from OLMC, a girls’ school in Parramatta. The topic was “That growing up today is better than it was for our parents”. Waverley had the affirmative side and put forward some strong arguments about the benefits of technology including its effects on our economy as well as references to the entertainment industry, ease of communication, travel and world safety.

The Year 8 debaters and their coaches Miss Walker and James will go to Santa Sabina College in Strathfield the first Friday evening of Term 3 to debate for a spot in the Grand Final. All students are encouraged to attend and support their fellow peers.

Meanwhile, the CAS Debating competitions also begins on Friday 27th July and continues for Weeks 1-5 in Term 3.

Good luck to both our Year 8 finals team as well as all other students who begin a prestigious and challenging competition.
