Great start to 2017 CSDA Debating

Debating has gained steady popularity as a co-curricular winter activity at Waverley

Debating has gained steady popularity as a co-curricular winter activity at Waverley

From Convenor of Debating, Cassandra Hill

On Friday night, Waverley hosted the first round of the CSDA Debating Competition against Domremy College in the PAC.

The topics for the night were: that homework should be banned, that technology is having a detrimental effect on education and that war is justified. Students were given these topics an hour prior to debating and they used their preparation time to construct effective arguments with a range of relevant and topical examples.

The night was a big success. Years 7, 9 and 10 won their debates against the opposition. With years 8 and 12 competing internally after forfeits from Domremy.

Congratulations particularly to the Year 7 team who were competing in their first ever debate in high school.

As usual, the debating students represented Waverley College with pride and demonstrated strong academic skills as well as eloquence in speaking and effective group work.

Good luck to all debaters who will be competing at OLSH this coming Friday.
