From the Director of the Junior School, Anthony Banboukjian

Prayer of the Week

Tuesday, 8th August, is the Feast Day of Mary MacKillop, who we now celebrate as Australia’s First Saint: St Mary of the Cross. Mary MacKillop loved God and always listened to what God was saying to her throughout the events in her life. She always asked God for help for herself, her family and friends and for the poor.

Response: St Mary of the Cross: Pray for Us

We pray for our country Australia, that all people will be treated fairly:

St Mary of the Cross: Pray for Us

For people who can’t find work and people who are too poor to pay their bills:

St Mary of the Cross: Pray for Us

For people who are sad and lonely: St Mary of the Cross: Pray for Us

For people who are sick or dying and for the strength of their families:

St Mary of the Cross: Pray for Us

For people who live in families that are unhappy: St Mary of the Cross: Pray for Us

For people who leave their own countries because of war and violence:

St Mary of the Cross: Pray for Us

We pray together to Mary, Mother of God: Hail Mary

We ask God who cares for us in every way to listen to our prayers through the help of St Mary of the Cross. We ask this through Christ our Lord

Amen.

Wakakirri

At the Junior School when you mention Wakakirri you must also mention Mrs Rollins in the same sentence for they have been linked for the last 21 years. Without her boundless energy and enthusiasm there would be no Wakakirri performance.

Monday night’s amazing production thrilled the many parents in the audience at NIDA. The staff and students know how lucky we are to have Mrs Rollins at the helm of such a big production and we greatly appreciate her energy, time and amazing talents.

The 100 or so boys involved in our performance on Monday night were also amazing. The boys’ behaviour and attitude throughout the day was exceptional. Their energy and excitement showed in their rehearsals and their full performance on the night. A big thank you to all the parents, grandparents, brothers and sisters who came out to support our boys.

Our Wakakirri performance was awarded three certificates on the night – Public Speaking, Team Work and Best Back Stage Crew – a tremendous effort.

A special thanks to Ms Stephens, Ms Crewsdon, and Mr Ghattas for their help throughout the day and night.

Special Notice

It was great to receive the email below from Mr Long, Head of St Pius X College Junior School, on arriving at school on Monday morning.

‘I’m just writing to congratulate your AFL boys on their wonderful sportsmanship on the weekend.  We had a boy who is on the Autistic spectrum and the St Pius boys were trying to get him to score his first ever goal.  Near the end of the game, Xavier received the ball and the Pius and Waverley boys stepped aside to allow him to score a goal.  My coach described it as ‘the parting of the Red Sea.’  She has been the Diocesan sports convenor and PSSA touch football convenor so she has seen a lot of sport and she described it as the best piece of sportsmanship she had ever seen.  Would appreciate if you could pass our thanks onto the boys.  They made a little boy very happy.’

Well done to all the boys involved in that game – true gentlemen in every sense.

Road Safety

The safety of every student is of the upmost importance to the staff of the Junior School. This includes of course travelling to and from school. We have spoken to the boys a number of times this year and will continue to reinforce the need to be road safe. I’d ask all parents to assist us with this message by talking to their sons about ensuring they cross at the lights or pedestrian crossings. Your assistance is greatly appreciated.

Future Event for Parents – Keep your sons reading

This event is for parents in years 5 to 12 and will be held in the Senior Library from 6.30 pm to 8 pm of Week 7 on Wednesday, August 30 with a light supper afterwards.  Parents can register with the Junior School or Senior School Library.

Father’s Day Mass – Message from Mr Ghattas

An early reminder that our annual Fathers’ and Grandfathers’ Mass will be held at Mary Immaculate Parish, Waverley on Friday 1 September 2017 (Week 7).  The Mass will commence at 12:00pm followed by a BBQ Lunch at the Junior School.  Please save the date in your calendar.  Information regarding RSVPs to this event will come out closer to the date.

Additionally, boys will be given the opportunity to go home with their family members at the conclusion of the BBQ at approximately 2:00pm.

A message from the Blue and Gold Committee

Dear Parents

A book of raffle tickets has been sent home in your son’s bag today – feel free to onsell, buy yourself or do nothing! Ticket stubs or unsold books can be placed back into the envelope with cash, sealed and returned to Audrey at the Junior School Reception. If this could be done no later than Tuesday 15 August we would greatly appreciate it.

Feel free to purchase tickets online at https://www.trybooking.com/RJVO and don’t forget our online silent auction at https://www.blueandgold.com.au.

Thanks for all your support!

Opal Cards

We are trying to ensure all students are tapping on and off with Opal cards when they get on buses after school. Transport NSW use this information to determine how many boys use a service and whether or not services should continue. It’s important to demonstrate by tapping on that they are are using these services. You would hate to lose them and have to find alternative transport home.  Parent support of this is greatly appreciated.

Photos

If anyone has photos from Saturday sport or any other Waverley College event that they would like to share with the rest of the College community could I ask you to send them in on a disk or memory stick to the Junior School office.

Name on all Student Property

Can I please stress the need to ensure your son has his name on all his gear – it makes it far easier to return any lost gear.

Walkathon

All families should have received the first note regarding our walkathon in September It would be greatly appreciated if you could fill in the form on the bottom and return it to school by Friday August 11 at the latest.
