¡Hola! As we wrap up another fantastic term in the Languages faculty, we’re excited to share some of the incredible progress our students have made.
Year 8 have had a blast this term in their food and restaurants unit. For their assessment, they wrote and performed restaurant skits in groups. They took on the roles of waiters, chefs, and customers, and acted out their scenes in front of their peers. We may have some future actors and playwrights in our midst! Not only did this bring lots of laughter and creativity into the classroom, but it also helped develop their conversational skills in a fun and interactive way. It has been great to see their growing confidence when communicating in Spanish. Please see an example of some of the amazing work below.
Take a look at the classroom in action here:
Year 10: Looking to the Future
Our Year 10 students have been thinking ahead and focusing on the vocabulary of holidays and work in their unit, “Looking Forward”. In the classroom students created their own horoscopes, learnt to talk about careers, aspirations and personal goals, as well as predicting the next technological change and fashion trend! For their assessment students created travel itineraries, and included vlogs on things that went wrong on their dream holiday. Students had a great time getting into character and researching holiday locations with their new grammatical knowledge. It’s been wonderful to see their enthusiasm as they practise describing their dream jobs, discussing future plans, and exploring what life could look like after school – all in Spanish! The confidence they’re gaining in using the language in real-world scenarios is truly impressive. It has been particularly engaging as Year 10 have been sharing videos and letters with students from Cardenal Newman, an EREA school in Buenos Aires, Argentina. For holiday inspiration please see some of their itineraries below!
Our Year 11 and 12 students have been hard at work preparing for their exams. Both groups have shown incredible dedication, and it’s been inspiring to watch them refine their speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills. Their grasp of complex grammar and vocabulary has grown tremendously, and they’ve truly risen to the challenge.
A special shout-out goes to our Year 12 students, who are in the final stretch of preparing for their HSC exams. Your determination and commitment have been outstanding, and we know you’ll give it your all. ¡Buena suerte! We wish you every success in your Spanish exams and beyond.
It’s been a busy, productive, and fun term for everyone. We’re so proud of how far our students have come, and we look forward to even more progress next term. Keep up the fantastic work!
¡Hasta luego!

The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award continues at the College, with many students on track towards completing their Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards.
Paramount to the Duke of Edinburgh International Award is individual ownership and responsibility towards achieving goals in a Skill, Physical Activity and Voluntary Service. The onus will be on our gentlemen to ensure they are meeting the expectations and demands associated with completing their Award, utilising the many resources available to them through the College.
Lunchtime meetings are currently being held for all students involved with the Award. This is a great opportunity to stay on track with all logs and due diligence. Lunchtime meetings are held in N31, Thursday Week B.
Expressions of interest are now open for boys currently in Year 8. More information and details will be provided to the whole cohort in Term 4, however all boys are welcome to attend lunchtime meetings and/or be in touch via email regarding involvement in the Award.

Last week, our senior Spanish classes experienced an exciting and authentic cultural excursion to a local Mexican restaurant – Mami’s, providing students with a unique opportunity to practise their language skills in a real-world setting with Latin American staff and each other. Students were greeted with vibrant decor, lively music, and the irresistible aromas of freshly-prepared Mexican cuisine.
Throughout the afternoon, students tried a delicious array of traditional dishes, including quesadillas, tacos, nachos, and guacamole. Each student was encouraged to step out of their comfort zone and explore the variety of flavours that Mexican cuisine has to offer. For many, it was their first time tasting some of these authentic dishes, and they embraced the challenge with enthusiasm – some students even drank the birria broth!
Another of the highlights of the excursion was the language component—students were tasked with communicating ONLY in Spanish. From requesting water, cutlery and getting students to pass them food or sauces, they navigated the language barrier with creativity, patience, and a good dose of humour. While it was challenging at times, it was also a lot of fun! The students quickly discovered that practical, hands-on experiences like these are invaluable for building confidence and fluency.
This excursion not only allowed students to practise their Spanish in a real-world context but also immersed them in the rich food culture of Mexico. Safe to say, students left the restaurant a few kilos heavier and a lot happier. We are proud of our students for embracing the experience with open minds and eager palates, and we look forward to more opportunities of Spanish learning in the real world.

Tevlin House had a highly successful evening on Thursday at our Winter Sleep Out at the College. This concluded the recent Winter appeal donation drive also for the Matthew Talbot Hostel. Thank you to all the Tevlin and Waverley community for the fantastic response to the Matthew Talbot Hostel’s donation drive. Tevlin boys were able to create 160 toiletry packs, as well as kitchen and clothing packs for the hostel.
Thank you to the many Tevlin mentors who assisted in supervising the evening, supported by our College mission team of Ms Walsh, Mr Kennedy and Ms Lipman. Below are some of the reflections from some Tevlin boys from their sleepout experience, the first being an extract from an inspiring pre-bedtime reflection from Year 11 prefect Constantine Iatrou, reminding us of our role in compassion towards those less fortunate.
“This sleep-out isn’t just an event. It’s a lesson in gratitude for us all. It’s a reminder of the strength and resilience of those who live without basic necessities and a call for us to be allies in their fight for dignity. When we wake tomorrow, we’ll return to our routines, but let’s not leave this experience behind, but continue supporting those in need, not just through donations, but through understanding, kindness and compassion. Thank you again for your generosity, and your commitment to making a difference. Tonight, let’s sleep not just with our eyes closed, but with our hearts open.” – Constantine Iatrou (Year 11)
“The 2024 Tevlin Winter Sleepout was an eye opening experience. Being my second time, I was prepared to push myself out of my comfort zone. We were lucky enough to hear from guest speaker Oliver Mulhearn who gave all the boys a fantastic insight into what it’s like working and supporting homeless people who approach St Canice’s homeless services. Together, we conducted a great discussion speaking about the struggles of homelessness and how Oliver feels during his day to day life, as he sees first hand the true effects of homelessness. We then came together to sort and pack the many generous donations made to the Matthew Talbot Hostel from students all across the College. Once more, this was a huge success and gave us all an immensely great feeling of accomplishment, knowing that we had contributed to a great cause.
Led by the Tevlin House Leaders, we were all given the opportunity to speak our own opinions in answering some key questions that are commonly misconceived and crucial in understanding the true nature of homelessness worldwide. This was incredibly interesting as I got to listen and discuss the many varying opinions expressed by the Tevlin Students. The comraderie amongst the boys was strong as we all settled in for what was to be an uncomfortable night’s sleep. Yes – sleeping on the floor in the E40s isn’t comfortable and all boys would agree in saying that we would much prefer to sleep in our beds at home, however this introduced the majority of Tevlin into feeling sympathy for the people in our broader communities who suffer from this on a daily basis. Waking up with a sore body was welcomed by Mr McCallum simulating the police were after us, and what eventually led to all the boys gathering on the roof, finishing off what was an overall fantastic, overwhelming and empowering event. The warm breakfast concluded our realisation into the importance of appreciating all the things that we may take for granted in our lives.” Xavier Kopsiaftis (Year 10)

On Saturday, 24 August 2024, Waverley College hosted the spectacular Blue and Gold Ball, bringing together over 700 parents, staff, Old Boys, sponsors, and supporters of our school community. What an incredible turnout!
Drinks and canapes from our wonderful caterers at Bold Food were enjoyed under the beautiful fig in Braidwood, followed by dinner, dancing and live auctions in the gym. The gym was dressed from top to toe, and guests were amazed at the impressive lighting by trusted suppliers at Crystal Productions.
We were lucky enough to have the event captured by some very talented photographers. You can view the Blue and Gold Ball gallery HERE and the Media Wall photos HERE.
A huge thanks must go to our amazing MC, Anthony ‘Harries’ Carroll and our incredible auctioneer, Emma Brown-Garrett who helped to ensure the night was a true success.
Congratulations to our live auction prize winner Leisha Major who bid to have the current parent, owner and head chef of Sugarcane Milan Strbac cook for 10 people at home. Thank you Daniella and Milan for your generous donation of this exceptional prize.
Remarkably, Clare Morahan was the recipient of not one, but both raffle items! The beautiful diamond and pearl earrings generously donated by Brett Courtenay, Chair of the Foundation AND the highly sought after 2025 tuition fees. What are the chances?!
The event would not have been so well received without the support of our major sponsors LJ Hooker, The Pop Team, Othoboutique, This is Africa, Penny’s Hotel, Bondi Gin Co, Ester Gin, and Neeson Murutt Neille Architects.
The feedback we have received has been incredibly positive—so many of you mentioned what a fantastic evening it was, how wonderful it was to connect with new parents, how impressive the gym looked, and how much you enjoyed the food and the band!
Thanks to the overwhelming generosity of our sponsors, contributors, and the endlessly supportive family and friends of our school community, we are thrilled to announce that the event successfully exceeded our initial target, raising a total of

Thank you once again for your support and dedication to our school’s future. Together, we are creating an extraordinary legacy for our students.
Last Monday, myself and 11 other students from Years 10 to 11 attended an eye-opening discussion and table talk presented by the Jesuit Refugee Service at St Vincent’s College, along with 4 other Sydney Schools.
The afternoon was filled with eye-opening stories and speeches from refugees and representatives of the JRS.
The experience unveiled new perspectives to all of us, giving us the chance to understand the recurring troubles faced by refugees and empathise with them. The afternoon also provided us with a wonderful opportunity to network with other students from schools across Sydney and discuss how we can collaboratively improve life for refugees in Australia.
Two refugees with lived experience spoke and shared their stories of deprivation, alienation and forced displacement. Our newfound education on the harsh conditions faced by refugees has certainly changed our perception, and reinforced our gratitude for everyday human rights and privileges we take for granted.

On Sunday, 11 August a team of 250 Athletes comprised of students, teachers, family members and friends, represented Waverley College in the annual running of the City to Surf.
The Waverley College Team adopted the name ‘Waverley College for Premmies’ and team members ran in support of the charity, Running for Premature Babies.
This charity was founded by Waverley College mum Sophie Smith, and this year marked the 18th Birthday of her triplets Henry, Jasper and Evan who were born prematurely and did not survive.
In remarkable news, the team raised an incredible $30,000 that will go towards a new Neonatal and Paediatric Ambulance for NSW/ACT.
You can see the team fundraising efforts HERE
Congratulations to all involved! This is an incredible effort, and one to be especially proud of.
