Visual Arts Club will be offered at Waverley as a summer activity for students from Years 5 – 12. Visual Arts Club provides an opportunity for students to build skills in critical and creative thinking.
This summer students will be introduced to Still Life: Painting With Oils. Each student will be taught fundamentals of technically painting different surfaces, objects and textures to build their knowledge and confidence in the oil painting medium.

This annual competition has been running since 1994 and is open to high school students in the local area. The exhibition showcases a dynamic mix of photos and short films, created by young photographers and filmmakers.
The competition comprises a range of categories, with a new category this year – ‘Inclusivity’. We see Year 12 Visual Art student Duke Weiland’s image submission ‘It’s all in the Makeup’ (above) hitting the criteria for ‘Inclusivity.’ This photograph has already become a favourite for the Prize by being posted on their Social Media.

The competition awards cash prizes of up to $2,000 and will this year be exhibited in the new Woollahra Gallery at Redleaf.

Wavefest 2021 has been postponed but this hasn’t stopped our incredible filmmakers from continuing to film and complete their short films. The aim is to have Wavefest at a later date in the year, or in an online format yet to be decided.

This week we are sharing a trailer from one of the Wavefest entries titled Roger Steel. It stars Owen Neamond and Paddy McCausland (Year 6), who wrote, directed, acted and produced the film. An incredible feat, during such a tumultuous time. Well done to both students.

Private music lessons are well underway online. Students are to be reminded to check their schedule, be punctual to their lessons and sign-in/out.
*Students are required to inform the tutor at least the day prior to their lesson if they are unable to attend due to an online class lesson clash.
We have excellent, well-qualified peripatetic teachers at Waverley College and lessons are available on a large variety of instruments.
Learning a musical instrument has so many benefits. Did you know that it engages practically every area of the brain at once? It can help grow discipline, language and maths skills, memory, concentration and coordination. It’s also fun!
Any student who wishes to learn an instrument online or join in the Band program are welcome to contact Mrs Kossenberg or any of the music staff. A range of instruments are available for hire at this time.

Students are encouraged to enter their best works whether they are a photographer or filmmaker.
A new category has been introduced this year with a focus on ‘inclusivity’.
Competition winners will be exhibited in the Woollahra Gallery and the competition awards cash prizes of up to $2000!

The Waverley Youth Art Prize encourages creativity in young artists from across Sydney. It is open to anyone aged between 9 – 18 years old who is living, studying or even simply who plays in Sydney’s East. All artworks are hung so that future artists get to experience the joy of exhibiting and see an audience appreciate their work. Young artists also go in the running to receive encouragement awards including art packs and vouchers to attend classes at local institutions such as the National Art School.
The Waverley Youth Art Prize responds to a different theme each year. In 2021 the theme is: We are Family – Ancestors, Bloodlines and Belonging. This year we had many recipients from Junior and Senior school. We would like to congratulate all entrants for their excellent efforts and beautiful artworks.

The annual Clancy Prize exhibition is open to all Sydney Catholic Schools’ secondary students. It is a celebration of our students’ creativity and spirituality, expressed through visual arts, and inspired by Cardinal Edward Clancy. The theme of the 2021 exhibition is: Celebrating 200 Years of Catholic Education in Australia.
As previously mentioned, our College submitted a collaboration between Year 8 students Fox Stapleton, Renato Rovacchi, Oscar Wilson and Year 11 student Isaiah Close – Brown. Their triptych artwork We are Waverley reflected upon our history of Waverley College, significant people and the land we sit upon.
21 May was the official opening night for the Art Prize where winners were presented. Sadly, our collaborative piece did not receive an award. The winner of the prize was a Southern Cross Catholic College, Burwood construction student Charlotte McCaughan for her artwork titled Tableland of Faith and Time.
Our artwork was however placed in the main gallery amongst the majority of the other prize recipients, which is a lovely compliment to have, amongst mostly Stage 6 artworks. Once the Clancy Prize Exhibition closes, this artwork will be exhibited at our College for everyone’s viewing.
Congratulations again to our entrants and we encourage you to continue to be creative and submit your artworks into the various competitions in Sydney.
