Waverley’s school production of Tartuffe is getting very close and the cast are gearing up for the show.
Tartuffe is a comedy that tells the story of Orgon, a man who has everything: money, power and a beautiful family. But lately he’s been questioning the point of it all and invites the ‘virtuous’ Tartuffe into his perfect household. A whirlwind of deception and seduction is unleashed that will threaten everything!
Updated from the original classical French play, this version is set against the conspicuous consumption of 1980s Sydney: big cars, big shoulders and big hair. Then there’s the music!
Starring students from Waverley, Ascham and St Clare’s, this production promises to be a comic rollercoaster!
Tickets for Tuesday 18, Wednesday 19 and Thursday 20 June are on sale now through the school events page HERE.

On Friday, 17 May 2024, our Year 11 Visual Design students attended the National Art School, Darlinghurst for an intensive workshop on Ceramics.
Students participated in a wheel throwing workshop facilitated by an experienced National Art School artist and explored the basic structures, movements, and techniques of wheel throwing.
Students created cups, mugs, bowls and plates and also learnt about future pathways in Fine Arts and Ceramics in a Fine Arts School.
This aligns with their Term 2 Unit of Work – Form vs Function – where students are learning Ceramics and creating tableware (cup, bowl and plate). Our students had such a wonderful day and brought beautifully made pieces of tableware back to school.
Year 11 Design & Technology students recently travelled to the Walsh Bay Arts Precinct to attend seminars and see the ‘SHAPE’ Exhibition. This exhibition displays students’ exemplary 2023 HSC major projects from Design and Technology, Industrial Technology and Textiles and Design.
Senior marker and guest speaker Ms Wagner spoke to students about what markers are looking for in their Major Design Project (MDP) and folio. She discussed the marking guidelines through examples of student work, and provided advice on choosing a Major Design Project.
In our second seminar, students heard from and engaged with industry professional, Sydney-based Product Designer Zachary Hanna. Zachary spoke about his education at UTS, travelling to work in Milan and his passion for furniture and lighting. Zachary has worked in numerous design consultancies, winning numerous awards.
After the seminars, students had time to unpack what they had learnt, examine the range of different projects, view the works closely and read sections of the exhibited design folio. The opportunity to engage with markers and industry professionals at the exhibition was a great experience for Waverley College Students.
It is with great excitement that our 2023 Visual Art student Luka Zonich’s selected artwork ‘What Would Pa Do?’ will be on exhibition for ARTEXPRESS at the Ngununggala (Southern Highlands) Art Gallery. Opening Night will be on Saturday, 25 May 2024, and the exhibition will be open from 18 May – 30 June and is a free event.
Luka’s artwork was inspired by Reg Mombassa and is a visual chronicle of tales that his Pa has shared with Luka. Pa’s tales are a unique blend of wisdom and humour, with a touch of the extraordinary. They have been invaluable life lessons, as well as a nostalgic link to childhood and that time spent with family.
Within the art making process for the body of work, Luka explored Pa’s storytelling and narratives, subject matter that symbolises his home and heritage of New Zealand. The chosen colours and drawing style are representative of Pa’s humour and remarkable stories.

We are thrilled to share exciting news about the Waverley Council and Walawaani Art project. As part of our commitment to reconciliation and fostering understanding and respect for Indigenous cultures, Walawaani has partnered with Waverley Council for an art project to create artworks and promotional banners for the council’s Reconciliation Week. Over the weekend, the flags were installed across parts of the Waverley local area. Key places of the flag are Campbell Parade, Bondi Junction and Birrell Street.
During this project, our students had the unique opportunity to work closely with local Indigenous artists and the Council to collaboratively create artworks that celebrate and honour Indigenous cultures and histories. This initiative not only allows our students to express their creativity but also provides them with a platform to learn about and engage with Indigenous perspectives and artistic traditions.
From their artworks they created, key symbols from multiple artworks created the flag for Reconciliation Week. This flag will be hung in the local area for the next three weeks.
Students’ artworks will be on exhibition at Waverley Library 28 July – 22 August 2024.
Private music lessons are available to all students from Year 5 to Year 12. The College views the study of music as an essential part of each student’s development. Lessons are held in the Performing Arts Centre by external tutors on specific days and times.
Instruction is available on a large range of instruments, theory, voice and composition. Please click HERE to learn more.

Here are some reflections on the production and rehearsals from the cast:
Alex King says, “I like that I work with my friends and I like that the show is quirky and suspenseful all at the same time, but very funny.”
Lochie Colquhoun says, “Comedy gold. I like the 80s costumes.”
Hooper Negus says, “I’ve come to many rehearsals and I really enjoy the bonds that the actors are making during rehearsals as they slowly begin to trust each other.”
Students are invited to submit a photo or short film entry to the Youth Photographic Award and Short Film Prize 2024. The prize showcases a broad range of images and films from students in the local area. The annual competition and exhibition, with cash prizes totalling more than $2,000, is a local celebration of creative expressions.

The Woollahra Youth Photographic Award and Short Film Prize 2024 will be exhibited at the Woollahra Gallery at Redleaf from Thursday, 24 October to Sunday, 10 November 2024.
The school production, Tartuffe, is coming up next Term and the cast have been rehearsing all Term in preparation for this hilarious play. Actors Luke Crosson, Matt Frost and Michaela Chamberlain share some of their thoughts on their characters and the rehearsal process:
“My character, Orgon, is having a mid-life crisis and seeking a new path of meaning, however this is negatively impacting on everyone he loves. I like how Orgon believes everything he’s doing is right, but with hindsight he’s destroying his family. The most memorable part of our rehearsals are building new skills, meeting new people, making new friendships.” Luke Crosson
“I like playing Tartuffe, because who doesn’t like playing a villain? Everything Tartuffe does is wrong but no one can do anything about it. I can just be totally repellent and its fun to be playing a manipulative character who gets a lot of laughs. I just finished performing in a production from another school and now it’s really fun to be a part of a production at Waverley.” Matt Frost
“Elmire really wants to do the right thing. She sees Tartuffe is trying to manipulate everyone and turning Orgon against his children. She really wants to amend things and get the family back. I enjoy the experience of being in this play. It’s very fun to do productions at other schools and great to be part of a cast and see how the play develops.” Michaela Chamberlain
