We will endeavour to improve the standard of our young musicians, expand their repertoire and strengthen relationships among the musicians of the College.

The Music Camp will be held at Kiah Ridge, Tahmoor and provide the opportunity to develop and strengthen the level of musicianship across all participating ensembles; specialist music tutors are employed to assist in this process along with the Waverley College full-time music staff.

It is strongly encouraged that all boys participating in the above groups attend this residential music camp.

Last Tuesday, 28 March, the Year 11 Drama class presented scenes from various phases of Theatre History. The night was a tremendous learning experience for all. The boys had to learn two scenes each, off by heart!

For some of our students this was the first time they had performed in front of a public audience, so the nerves were high, but that helped to push the boys to achieve their best. We also had brand new VET Entertainment students helping out at the event. Thank you to Sebastian Blowers who ran the audio desk and Zac Summer-Hayes, who looked after the haze machine, a special lighting effect and the cast backstage.

I am very proud of the actors who put in their best effort with their performances. Some of them played stock characters such as a villain, a villain’s sidekick, heroine and hero from the Victorian Melodrama era. Others played mechanics from a shipbuilder’s guild during Medieval times, putting on a Bible story.

In a contemporary setting, it was interesting for the boys to see how men during that age treated women. Noah was bossy and domineering with his wife, and her sons had higher status than her. The boys tried to address this imbalance by injecting humour into the performance, for example, one of the sons became a simpleton and used slapstick comedy to bump into the set, to have “lost” his costume, etc.

The boys all performed a scene from David Williamson’s The Club. Those scenes were so fabulous, I’m inspired to put on the production as a school play one day!

I believe that this showcase evening really built growth in the actors and VET Entertainment students who worked on the show, due to all the technical demands of the sets, lights and audio effects. The boys were also assessed on the evening by Mr Peter Lamb. Thank you to him, Ms Kossenburg and Mr Wasef who all helped with the event.

I am one lucky teacher who gets to work with such talented, generous, passionate and inspiring Drama students every day.

Beginning Concert Bands will start Week 1 of Term 2 for Junior and Senior students. These bands will be for boys who are learning a new instrument or wanting to restart an instrument that they have previously played.

Festival of Bands – Waterford Concert Band

Term 2 will see the start of the new Waverley College Drama Club. Drama Club will be a new and exciting addition to the already diverse Winter co curricular offerings at the College. It will run throughout the Winter season on Wednesday and Thursday afternoons at the PAC.

Convened by myself (the Head of Drama)and Mr Peter Lamb, the Club will offer opportunities for both students who have been unable to take up Drama as an elective at school, and existing Drama students who wish to extend themselves outside the classroom.

In Term 2, we will start with Drama games and activities to build confidence and important collaboration skills, before moving on to performing short scenes for the stage.

2017 HSC Drama showcase

During Term 3, the focus will switch to camera acting techniques with students able to gain valuable insight in how to prepare and perform for the small screen, using extracts from existing screenplays and equipment provided by the College.

There will also be an opportunity to perform and receive feedback on any audition pieces students may have upcoming outside the College.

Interested students from Years 7-12 are encouraged to sign up.

Please contact Ms Jinga ASAP before the start of Term 2, Monday 24 April, with an email registering your interest. Ms Jinga will then finalise a class list ready for Term 2, Week 1, when the Club commences.

Last Thursday, The Cliff Goodchild Concert Band and The Cameraygal Wind Symphony took to the stage to deliver an unforgettable performance in our PAC. The concert culminated in an impressive orchestral arrangement of Giuseppe Verdi’s ‘Dies Irae’ from Requiem, featuring 78 musicians from both bands.

Thank you to the Music Supporters’ Group parents/carers. We would especially like to thank Naomi and Greg Isaac, Joe Rede, Christina Leonard and Karen Birrell, who worked tirelessly behind the scenes in preparing food and beverages for the performers and guests. Thank you to Angus McPherson for the wonderful photos and Bishoy Wasef for audio and lighting technical support.

The concert was a testament to the talent and dedication of the young musicians, along with our Head of Bands, Mr Dan Williams. It also highlighted the importance of music education and the power of music to bring people together.

Congratulations to all involved for putting on a spectacular performance.

Year 8 don’t have an opportunity to study Drama as part of their curriculum, so Waverley College is providing students with an opportunity to watch a performance and participate in a workshop in the first week of Term 2.

Shock Therapy Theatre are coming to perform their play called, The Apology for Year 8, during periods 1 and 2 on Friday, 28 April 2023. Boys will then be withdrawn from one further period during the day, to participate in a Drama devising workshop.

This experience should inspire some boys who have forgotten about Drama, to choose it as an elective in Year 9. For others, it will be an opportunity to watch an issue-based performance, and participate in a fun, experiential workshop.

The workshop aims to give students an opportunity to learn theatrical techniques and work as a team, to create an original play and perform it to the rest of the workshop group.

What is The Apology About?

Inspired by a true story of a high school student who “took revenge” on a classmate who was bullying him after his father advised him to “fight back”, The Apology is a searingly honest look at the repercussions of taking revenge, and the long-term effects that bullying can have.

Told from an unbiased perspective, this powerful production forces students to decide if the punishment fits the crime.

The Apology is performed by two actors (Sam Foster and Hayden Jones), who play 18 different characters in total, without ever leaving the stage or changing costume.

Fuelled with intensity, the play fuses physical theatre techniques, multiple role-sharing and live music into a visceral and dynamic piece of theatre.
