The Year 11 Semester 1 Progress Report will be available today for you to view and download on the Parent Lounge in TASS.

This report provides a mark and rank for subjects where a mark is available. This provides important ongoing data prior to the full reports that will be available at the end of Term 3 / beginning of Term 4.

Further information about how your son has performed in his cohort is available via the Parent Lounge Analytics. This area provides a box and whiskers graph that allows parents to view the position of their son’s mark in relation to the rest of the cohort in each subject. The box and whiskers plot indicates student groupings by quartile and median.

As we move into this break, it is important that our Year 11 students use this as an opportunity for major revision, preparation for Term 3 and the preliminary exams which begin in Week 8.

It is important to note that Year 11 is simply not just the year to set the groundwork for Year 12, but that it is becoming increasingly evident that Universities are seeking these results when offering places for early entrance.

Your son has been chosen to participate in an interfaith conference on Wednesday 19 May.

This involves Year 11 students from a number of religious schools, at the Emanuel Synagogue, 7 Ocean St Woollahra, and part of the day will include a tour of the Synagogue and viewing and description of the Torah scroll. Judaism is part of the SOR II program but more importantly we are committed to making positive relationships with people from all faiths.

Students attend period 1 until 9:10am and meet in the Centenary Quad for departure at 9:15am. They will walk, with the designated teachers, to The Emanuel Synagogue where the program commences at 10am. There students will engage in a range of activities with students from other faith traditions.

Students need to bring their own lunch in a small excursion bag. The program ends at 2pm and students have the choice of walking back to school or being dismissed from there, based on your permission.

Your son will be an ambassador for Waverley College at this important interfaith dialogue event and as such expected to fully engage with the opportunity presented to him. Full school uniform is required. Your son is still expected to participate in any co-curricular activities and training afterwards.

Further information

This activity is a response to the compulsory fieldwork component within the Stage 4 Geography unit ‘Water in the World’ and Religion topic ‘Stewards of Creation’. A formal Geography assessment task has been constructed around the field trip. Also, the cost of the excursion has been calculated with the expectation that all students attend.

Year 11 Community Outreach

From Ms Marie-Anne Maakrun, Assistant Director Identity and Student Formation

Across Term 2, all Year 11 students will continue volunteer work placements in community outreach as part of the College’s Social Justice initiatives. Students are working in organisations such as Matthew Talbot Hostel, Our Big Kitchen, Waverley War Memorial Hospital, Wairoa School, Jarjum College, Windgap Bowling and Bondi Public School.

The students provide invaluable support to our partner organisations as they work with marginalised groups in our local community such as the homeless, elderly and disabled.

A registration document was shared with your son in Term 1 for him to select a community service placement and date. Parents will receive an email from Ms Martina Cooper confirming the details of where and when your son is going to be doing his volunteering prior to commencement.

We encourage you to speak to your son about his placement and his experiences. The program continues across Term 3 with opportunities for students to get increasingly involved.

If you have any questions please feel free to email me at mmaakrun@waverley.nsw.edu.au
