Year 12 Post-Trials Study Skills Session – Wednesday, 24 August 2022

To further support Year 12, we have arranged for Dr Prue Salter (www.enhanced-learning.net) to run a workshop with our HSC plus ATAR Year 12 students next Wednesday, 24 August during Period 1 in the PAC Theatre.

The session will help reinvigorate Year 12, to put together a study plan right through to their final HSC exams, so they can be confident about their approach in the last months of their studies. Dr Salter will outline the steps students should take to apply teacher feedback, fine-tune their study approach, and bring balance to their studies with self-care. 

Using research about the brain, students will be guided in how to structure their study during the HSC exam period and avoid common study mistakes. Students will have the chance to map out their exam timetable and allocate study time based on the guidelines Dr Salter explains, looking at different scenarios, such as exams that are clustered together, or significant gaps in the exam timetable.

Parents are encouraged to ask their son to explain their plan to them after the session, as talking through it, will help embed the learning from the session and give parents a greater understanding of what our students will be undertaking in their last weeks of Year 12.

Details: Geography Year 11 and Year 12 Field Trip – Narrabeen 

Date: Friday, 2 September 2022 (Week 7)

Time: Meet in the Centenary Quad at 8:30am, to arrive back at school approximately 3:15pm

Cost: The cost of this excursion has been added to your son’s school fees

Uniform: College Sports Uniform

Wet Weather Advice: The field trip will go ahead in all weather expect thunder and lightning. Therefore, students are advised to bring along a raincoat / umbrella with a change of footwear.

Food: Students are to bring their own food for morning tea and lunch – there will be limited time to visit food outlets.

*We aim to be back at school by 3:15pm. Students will be expected to attend any co-curricular activities that afternoon. Should traffic prevent our timely return, this will be communicated via the Waverley app.

The Year 12 Parent/Teacher/Student Interviews will be held on Wednesday, 20 July from 3:30pm – 7pm, face-to-face, in the Waverley College Gymnasium.

Bookings will open during the school holidays and you will be notified via email once the bookings become available. These will occur through the TASS Parent Lounge.  

Bookings close on Monday, 18 July at 5pm. It will not be possible to open the bookings after that time, so please ensure that you access the system by this date.

In order to have staff available to as many families as possible, interviews will be of five minutes’ duration.

To make the process as efficient as possible, we are requesting that you please:

• don’t make consecutive bookings
• leave at least a five-minute gap between your bookings to allow time to move between meetings with the teachers

Need to improve your Resume and CV writing skills? Waverley Library is hosting an event that is sure to get you that next job.

Waverley Library is running the HSC Help: Resume and CV Writing talk and all students are welcome.

When: Wednesday, 13 July, 6:30pm – 7:30pm.

Where: Waverley Library Theatrette, 32-48 Denison Street, Bondi Junction

Who: Mohan Dhall (educator and lecturer) and Denise from Studiosity. For students who already have a resume/CV, Denise will act as a second set of eyes for your cover letter and give professional advice on your CV/resume.

Cost: Free but bookings essential.

Active Study

• Adopt a wide range of study techniques
• One of the biggest mistakes students make is just to read their notes over and over, and hope it sticks in their head
• Read your notes out loud – verbalising responses is a high-impact strategy that helps with cognitive load
• Written summaries rather than typed
• Paraphrase concepts into your own words 
• Use of mind maps, tree diagrams and colours (not excessive)
• Do as many revision questions, quizzes and past exam papers as possible
• Reference the syllabus dot points
• Ask your parents/siblings/friends to quiz you on content using your summary notes/text/syllabus dot points

Handwriting advice

We know that Trial and HSC examinations require candidates to write quickly and legibly. An average student ought to be able to write in the vicinity of 2,500 words in a two-hour examination. It is essential that you build your handwriting capacity and stamina, if you are to produce work under examination conditions that reflects your ability and knowledge.

I recently read an article by a physiotherapist who said that attaching weights or batteries to the end of a pen in the weeks leading up to an examination, is unlikely to be efficacious, but that regularly writing using pen and paper for the next three months is the only way to develop this critical motor skill.

Lifestyle and balance

– self care – healthy eating – exercise – recreation – sleep – study

• The most successful students are those with a healthy lifestyle and good balance in their lives
• Healthy eating and access to healthy snacks, fruit/ veggies cut up ready to eat, rather than processed packet snacks
• Drinking plenty of water, rather than sugary, caffeinated drinks 
• Regular exercise, practising mindfulness, and most importantly, getting enough sleep (amount needed varies, but the average is around eight hours)
• We need solid, sufficient sleep for the brain to re-wire neural pathways, to consolidate the day’s learning – lack of sleep can lead to reduced concentration and attention span, delayed response time, and decreased short-term memory
• It is also important that you have time to do the things you enjoy, spend time with family and friends, and also have ‘down time’ just to relax

Staying Motivated

Studying can be a hard slog, sometimes a little tedious or dull. Staying motivated can be as simple as:

• going for a walk
• a change of scenery, mixing up your study environment by going to different libraries, eg State Library of NSW, our College Library, University Of NSW Library etc.
• creating a study group 
• understanding what motivates you and committing to it.

Students wishing to obtain their General Boat Licence will complete the practical component of the course on Thursday, 21 July.

The course will run in Sydney Harbour from Watsons Bay Pilot Station. Students are to meet at the Pilot Station at 8:30am and will return to school at lunchtime, to attend Periods 5 and 6.

Students must wear full winter PE uniform please.

The cost of this course is $200 and will be charged to the student’s account.

Please find below information regarding the ‘taping and bandaging’ seminar that Year 12 PDHPE students will be involved in during Week 1 of Term 3.

All Year 12 PDHPE students will be involved in a Sports Medicine seminar presented by physiotherapist Mark Mitchell on campus in the E40s classroom. This seminar will be both practical and theory in nature, and will be held during Periods 1 and 2.

The main focus of the seminar will be on ‘taping and bandaging’, with an emphasis on ankle, thumb, and wrist injuries. Students will also have an opportunity to ask Mark questions about other syllabus-related content.

When: Friday, 22 July (Week 1 Term 3), Periods 1 and 2

Where: E40s

Attire: full academic winter uniform

Cost: $10 to be billed to the student’s school fees
