Dear Parents and Carers,
We would like to remind you that our CANVAS Learning Management System is open for Years 5 – 12 parents and carers, in lieu of a Term 1 progress report.
This enables parents and carers to be notified when students receive assessment task notifications and results for assessment tasks in real-time, rather than waiting for a static report snapshot.
Further information on the purpose of launching this system, instructions for access, and an outline of what parents and carers can access, can be viewed in the short video below that we released in 2022.
We now have an easier method to sign in for parents/carers via our SSO. Please make sure you save this weblink to your Internet browser for easy access to the login page.
The weblink is: https://waverley.cloudwork.id/

If so, please email iAssist outlining the issue, or use the CANVAS Helpdesk, found on the dashboard of your CANVAS page.
This week, Dr Prue Salter from Enhanced Learning Educational Services www.enhanced-learning.net ran a study skills evening with Year 7 parents and students.
The evening helped families assess what changes could be made to help students move towards achieving their personal best, efficiently and effectively. Families examined the following areas: home study environment, the way they organise and manage their resources, how to work effectively at home and deal with distractions, and how to manage the workload in high school.
Families also have access to a video about the steps to studying in high school: making study notes, learning the notes by testing yourself, and doing as much practise as possible. Parents/carers are encouraged to review the slides and handout from the session with students, and discuss the main areas identified where changes need to be made.
Parents/carers can also find extra study skills tips on the following website: http://studyskillstoptipsparents.com/
All secondary students at our College also have access to a great study skills website to help students develop their skills.

Dear Parents and Carers
Waverley College is participating in a research project titled ‘Early Intervention for Child Problematic Screen Use’ facilitated by Macquarie University, regarding screen use and gaming by students in Years 5-8.
The findings from this project will provide valuable insights into screens and gaming for our student population, and will contribute to the research in Australia around how to prevent and treat those children and families suffering from Gaming Disorder and related problematic screen use.
Students in Years 5-8 will complete an online survey which will include questions about their screen use patterns, relationships, thoughts and feelings. The survey will typically take no longer than 40 minutes and will be completed in class on the dates below:
If you agree for your child to take part in the project, you are not required to do anything else.
At school, your child will also be given an information sheet about the research project and will be able to participate or decline participation, as they wish.
If you do not want your child to participate in the study, please click the button below to fill in your details on page 2 of the ‘Parent Participants Information and Consent Form’ and email it to bradley.marshall@hdr.mq.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding the above, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Dear Parents, Carers and Students of Year 7,
We are looking forward to you joining us next Tuesday, 28 February at 6pm for the parent/carer and student information evening on Study Skills with Dr Prue Salter in the College Gymnasium.
Parents/carers and students should attend together, as the session is very interactive. Both students and parents also need to bring along a pen. Handouts will be given out during the evening.
Also, just to remind you that our College is a subscriber to the study skills website www.studyskillshandbook.com.au
The Study Skills website will help you develop essential skills for academic success. There are units of work on improving time management skills, how to study, research skills, summarising, technology use, brain and memory and much more.
Everything you need to know about becoming a more powerful learner and improving your marks at school can be found on this site. For example, learn how the colour of your room affects your ability to study, what the best study techniques are for your type of brain, how to improve your handwriting, and useful software and apps to block yourself from technology distractions.
You will also see lots of useful handouts, grids and planners at the bottom of the THINGS TO PRINT page.
To access the handbook, go to www.studyskillshandbook.com.au and login with these details:

NB: This is an adults-only event.
Dear Parents and Carers,
The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is a point in time assessment of literacy and numeracy skills that are essential for every child to progress through school and life. Students in Years 5, 7 and 9 participate in the annual NAPLAN tests in writing, reading, conventions of language (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy.
Our school will be participating in NAPLAN Online between 15 and 24 March 2023.
Years 5 and 7 students will sit their test in Periods 1-2 and Year 9 students will sit their test in Periods 3-4.
Students must bring their fully-charged laptops and headphones to this session.
Excessive preparation for NAPLAN Online is not recommended. Students do not need to be able to touch type to complete NAPLAN Online as the tests are not about keyboard skills (just as the paper test is not about handwriting skills).
Students can use the public demonstration site to familiarise themselves with the types of questions and tools available in the NAPLAN Online tests.
Please click on this link 2023 NAPLAN Online – Information for parents and carers sheet for further information.
If you have any questions regarding this practice test, please contact either Ms Lynsey Porter (Director of Curriculum), Ms Charlotte Stephens (Assistant Director of Curriculum) (Junior School), or Mr David Parnell (Head of Learning Support).

Furthermore, if parents or carers are interested in learning about strategies to support their son through NAPLAN, our Head of Academic Enrichment, Ms Helen Barrie, has prepared an informative webinar below.
