Dear Parents and Carers,

We would like to remind you that our CANVAS Learning Management System is open for Years 5 – 12 parents and carers, in lieu of a Term 1 progress report.

This enables parents and carers to be notified when students receive assessment task notifications and results for assessment tasks in real-time, rather than waiting for a static report snapshot.

Further information on the purpose of launching this system, instructions for access, and an outline of what parents and carers can access, can be viewed in the short video below that we released in 2022.

Easier Method for Parent/Carer Sign In

We now have an easier method to sign in for parents/carers via our SSO. Please make sure you save this weblink to your Internet browser for easy access to the login page.

The weblink is: https://waverley.cloudwork.id/

Do You Need Technical Support?

If so, please email iAssist outlining the issue, or use the CANVAS Helpdesk, found on the dashboard of your CANVAS page.

This week, Dr Prue Salter from Enhanced Learning Educational Services www.enhanced-learning.net ran a study skills evening with Year 7 parents and students.

The evening helped families assess what changes could be made to help students move towards achieving their personal best, efficiently and effectively. Families examined the following areas: home study environment, the way they organise and manage their resources, how to work effectively at home and deal with distractions, and how to manage the workload in high school.

Families also have access to a video about the steps to studying in high school: making study notes, learning the notes by testing yourself, and doing as much practise as possible. Parents/carers are encouraged to review the slides and handout from the session with students, and discuss the main areas identified where changes need to be made.

Parents/carers can also find extra study skills tips on the following website: http://studyskillstoptipsparents.com/

All secondary students at our College also have access to a great study skills website to help students develop their skills.

Dear Parents and Carers

Waverley College is participating in a research project titled ‘Early Intervention for Child Problematic Screen Use’ facilitated by Macquarie University, regarding screen use and gaming by students in Years 5-8.

The findings from this project will provide valuable insights into screens and gaming for our student population, and will contribute to the research in Australia around how to prevent and treat those children and families suffering from Gaming Disorder and related problematic screen use.

Students in Years 5-8 will complete an online survey which will include questions about their screen use patterns, relationships, thoughts and feelings. The survey will typically take no longer than 40 minutes and will be completed in class on the dates below:

If you agree for your child to take part in the project, you are not required to do anything else.

At school, your child will also be given an information sheet about the research project and will be able to participate or decline participation, as they wish.

If you do not want your child to participate in the study, please click the button below to fill in your details on page 2 of the ‘Parent Participants Information and Consent Form’ and email it to bradley.marshall@hdr.mq.edu.au by Friday, 3 March, 2023.

Dear Parents and Carers,

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is a point in time assessment of literacy and numeracy skills that are essential for every child to progress through school and life. Students in Years 5, 7 and 9 participate in the annual NAPLAN tests in writing, reading, conventions of language (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy.

Our school will be participating in NAPLAN Online between 15 and 24 March 2023

Years 5 and 7 students will sit their test in Periods 1-2 and Year 9 students will sit their test in Periods 3-4.

Students must bring their fully-charged laptops and headphones to this session.

Excessive preparation for NAPLAN Online is not recommended. Students do not need to be able to touch type to complete NAPLAN Online as the tests are not about keyboard skills (just as the paper test is not about handwriting skills).

Students can use the public demonstration site to familiarise themselves with the types of questions and tools available in the NAPLAN Online tests.

Please click on this link 2023 NAPLAN Online – Information for parents and carers sheet for further information.

If you have any questions regarding this practice test, please contact either Ms Lynsey Porter (Director of Curriculum), Ms Charlotte Stephens (Assistant Director of Curriculum) (Junior School), or Mr David Parnell (Head of Learning Support).

Furthermore, if parents or carers are interested in learning about strategies to support their son through NAPLAN, our Head of Academic Enrichment, Ms Helen Barrie, has prepared an informative webinar below.

Please take the time to view our impressive new nine-minute webinar where Ms Barrie outlines the Waverley College strategy for supporting student confidence in the lead up to NAPLAN testing.

Dear Parents/ Carers and Students,

The link to the Years 7-12 Assessment Booklets, on the College Website, was emailed to all Parents/ Carers and Students.

You can also access the link to the Curriculum page of the College Website HERE. Please scroll down to the relevant year group to access the downloadable booklets.

Students are advised to download a copy of their assessment booklet and transfer the key dates for their subjects into their diaries/ calendars.

Please read this important school vaccination program update from NSW Health.

SCHOOL VACCINATION PROGRAM UPDATE

Keeping your child up-to-date with routine vaccinations helps to protect them from serious preventable diseases. As part of the NSW School Vaccination Program, students in Year 7 are offered free vaccines to protect them from diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis (dTpa) and human papillomavirus (HPV). In Year 10, students are offered the free meningococcal ACWY vaccine.

Your consent is required for your child to receive routine vaccinations at school. If your child is in Year 7 or Year 10 this year, you can now provide this consent online.

This year’s school vaccination clinics will be held on Wednesday, 1 March 2023 and Tuesday, 19 September 2023. You can provide consent for your child’s vaccinations via Service NSW using this link.

From February 2023, only one dose of HPV vaccination is required to be fully vaccinated. This change has been endorsed by the Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI) based on the latest evidence, showing that one dose provides the same level of protection against HPV as two doses.

If you have already consented to your child receiving two doses of HPV vaccine, they will only receive one dose. If your child is in Year 8 or above and previously missed their second dose of HPV vaccine, they are now considered fully vaccinated and do not require a second dose.

A small number of students who are immunocompromised are still recommended to receive a three-dose course of HPV vaccine. If your child is immunocompromised, it is important to discuss their immunisation needs with their GP.

If your child misses a school vaccination clinic, the school immunisation nurses will try to catch them up at their next visit. Alternately, you can speak to a GP or pharmacist about catching up on vaccination.

More information on school vaccination: health.nsw.gov.au/schoolvaccination

Questions: please contact South Eastern Sydney Public Health Unit on 9382 8333 (Ext 2).

Dear  Parents and Carers,

As referenced in the Year 8 Assessment Booklets, there are some mandatory subjects where classes are streamed to ensure that students are supported appropriately and according to their needs. These subjects are Mathematics Years 7-10, English Year 9-10, and Science Years 9-10.

An overview for each of these subjects is outlined below:

English:

Year 9

Class Structure
2 & 6 Streamed top classes of equal aptitude
