The Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme is offered at Waverley College to students in Year 8 and onwards. The award requires students to consistently apply themselves to physical activity, learning new skills and community service. Participants also develop their navigation skills, resilience and leadership in the multiple Adventurous Journeys they undertake.

The Duke of Edinburgh Award is a three-certificate system which encourages and enables students to be proactive in taking on challenges, setting goals and being active in the local community. On Friday, 29 July 2022 Year 8 students will be participating in the Academic Assessment Services (Allwell) Test during Periods 1-4.  This is a mandatory test and you may remember that all students sat a similar test upon entry to Year 7.

This test forms a key part of Waverley College effectively and consistently measuring the academic growth of all students.  When combined with the NAPLAN data, the College will have four years of data measurement to provide feedback to you regarding your son. We also use this data in a variety of ways to improve the delivery of curriculum within the school.

After the testing day you will be provided with a written report, summarising your son’s results.  These results will be returned to the College a few weeks after the testing date.

How does my son prepare for these tests?

There is no course material to study prior to the day.  It is a measurement, similar to NAPLAN, to give the College a picture of how your son is progressing during Year 8.  It is vitally important on the day for your son to try his best, read the instructions carefully and use every minute to maximum effect.

What happens if my son is absent from school that day?

There will be another day allocated to enable students to complete the test if they are away.

The Year 8 Subject Selection Information Evening is scheduled for the evening of Tuesday, 21 June in Kenny Classrooms as per the below schedule from 6pm-7pm.

>>> Click here to view the Kenny venues for the Subject Selection Information Evening.

As outlined a couple of weeks ago, in Years 9 and 10, apart from the mandatory subjects, the students study two additional subjects commonly referred to as electives. The evening will provide an opportunity for students to learn more about the electives in which they have an interest.

The information during this evening should be considered along with the booklet in the link below which outlines the pattern of study that the students undertake over Years 9 and 10, including the elective subjects available.

>>> Click here to view the Subject Selection Information Booklet Stage 5.

There is also a College Web Link below that offers further information on each course via a set of presentation slides.

>>> Click here to view the Subject Selection College Web Link.

The subject selection process will be completed online early next term. Details on how to do this process will be sent out closer to the time.

The most important thing is that the students are selecting elective subjects that they will enjoy. These are important decisions to make, as they will influence the staffing and resourcing decisions the College has to make for the 2023 timetable.

During Week 9, on Tuesday, 21 June, students and parents will have the opportunity to attend subject selection presentations in Kenny Classrooms from 6pm-7pm, where they will learn more about courses in which they are interested, and have the opportunity to ask Heads of Department or delegates any questions.

The subject selection process will be completed online early next term. Details on how to do this process will be sent out closer to the time.
