Rugby: CAS vs Cranbrook ahead

Coleg Gwent

From the Convenor of Rugby, John McCoy

Welcome Back!

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome back all students and families to a very exciting finale to the 2018 CAS season. I hope all students, staff and parents had a relaxing break and are fresh for the remaining rounds of rugby ahead of us.

CAS Round 3 Vs Cranbrook

In our first week back, we definitely do not have an easy task as we take on Cranbrook. Cranbrook always turn up against Waverley in this local derby and will be hoping to catch us off guard. We cannot afford to take this round lightly and let go of all that we have achieved so far this year.

Our 13s, 16s and Opens play at Cranbrook, and our 14s and 15s will have their final match of the year at Queens Park. All players need to ensure that they arrive early to each match to have a thorough warm up. While it is a short trip to Cranbrook, it can take time with heavy traffic. Players are also expected to reserve for the match following their own.

Australian Rugby League Championship

The Waverley boys did us proud and came 1st in their pool. They lost a close game in the semi-final to the team that went on to win the competition.

Representation Selections

Over the holidays, Waverley College had a number of students who were selected in state and national representative teams. Congratulations to the following students:

Australian Schoolboys Rugby Union – Luca Moretti

NSW 1s – Luca Moretti (1st Place – Australian Schools Championships)

Combined States – Harry Whiteman, Conor Molloy, Lathan Hutchinson-Walters (5th Place – Australian Schools Championships)

NSW U16s 1st XV – Miles Amatosero

NSW U16s 2nd XV – Jordan Swann

Sydney Juniors U16s – Aisea Aholelei, Ronald Volkman, Oliver Ferguson

Congratulations to Mr Scott Coleman who did a great job coaching the Combined States team as well as Mr Kyle Newbury who has been selected as manager for the NSW U16s teams.

Waverley College 1st XV Vs Coleg Gwent (Wales)

During the holidays, Waverley College families were very generous in hosting a touring team, Coleg Gwent, who made the journey from Wales. On Sunday 15 July, the 1st XV faced up to Coleg Gwent with the touring side proving too good on the day. The final score was 19-10 in a competitive affair.

It was a fantastic hit out for our boys, with a number of students having the opportunity of wearing the Double V jersey for the first time. Further to this, it was a great chance for our boys to develop relationships and learn about the Welsh culture. Our boys were blown away by the singing of the visitors – something we can improve on in our rugby program!

Thanks to all those families who put their hands up to billet the touring group for the two nights. It again shows what a friendly and hospitable community we have at Waverley College!
