Rugby: Welcome to 2017!

Rugby wins all rounds against Knox at Queens Park.

from the Convenor of Rugby, John McCoy

2016 was a brilliant year for Waverley College in a number of ways. Waverley made a significant improvement in the HSC school rankings, the Cosgrove Centre was officially opened and the Henry Plume Shield arrived back at Birrell Street!

The success of 2016 was no fluke. Nor was it through the efforts of one person. 2016 was a year in which Waverley College came together – students, teachers, coaches and parents – to make a positive cultural change.

In 2017 we look to replicate and improve on what we all witnessed in 2016. We aim to support each individual player reach their potential, while making lifelong memories. We aim to make Queens Park a home ground where students, parents and Old Boys can turn up and instantly feel connected to the special community we have. We aim to create an atmosphere where our visiting guests feel welcome and comfortable.

I thank, in advance, the efforts of our hardworking coaching staff, our generous Supporter Group and parents support group, for putting our boys in positions where they can learn new skills, create friendships and achieve dreams.

To every student who pulls on a Blue and Gold jersey, the expectation is you give your all at training and on the playing field, you are respectful to officials and opponents and, most importantly, you enjoy the game. It words of the famous chef and food writer, Martin Yan, “When you enjoy what you do, work becomes play.”

I wish all players and coaches the best for the upcoming season and I look forward to watching another edition of exhilarating rugby being etched into the proud Waverley College history books.

Waverley College Rugby Supporter Group

The Waverley College Rugby Supporter Group recently held their Annual General Meeting. The committee elected the following members of the community into the following positions:

  • President – Mr Darren Ellis
  • Treasurer – Mr Rino Tomasiello
  • Secretary – Mr Craig Bell

I congratulate these members of the community on these appointments and thank them for taking on these duties.

Any members of the community who are interested in joining the Supporter Group are encouraged to contact Mr Darren Ellis (darren@ellisplumbing.com.au) to register your interest. We are currently looking for volunteers wishing to assist on canteen and BBQ duties throughout the season.

Preseason

Preseason is scheduled to commence at Queens Park next week. 13s, 14s and 15s will train on Monday and Wednesday (3:30pm-5:00pm). 16s and Opens will train on Tuesday (3:30pm – 5:00pm). Years 8, 10 & 11 will be required to attend the CAS Swimming Championships on Thursday.

Students who are involved in CAS Swimming and Diving will not be required to attend training next week.

All players are to ensure that they clearly label all their rugby gear as well as school uniform prior to attending preseason. Last year there was a significant amount of lost property collected each afternoon which was unfortunately not labelled.

Internal Trials

We will be holding Internal Trials for all age groups on Saturday 18 March. All players are expected to have with them a Waverley College Jersey as well as a Colour Jersey (non Waverley). Trial teams will be separated into Waverley Vs Colour teams. Timings for the trials are still to be confirmed.

I look forward to seeing you at Queens Park in the coming weeks!

WAVERLEY TO WIN!
