Round 8 of the winter tennis season saw the Waverley tennis squadron face off against Barker College, who look to have found some form approaching the conclusion of the season.
The results from the 1sts – 4ths matchups did not reflect how close the Waverley boys were to taking a victory on last Saturday’s bitterly cold morning. The 1sts lost 3 sets to 5 (35-43), with some very tight doubles and singles matches. Wins from Pat Veron and Nikita Nikitenko highlighted this fixture, as well as a lengthy doubles contest (6-3, 6-7) for the top pairing of Pat Veron and myself. The 2nds were unfortunate to take a loss, due to an unforeseen absence. The 3rds and 4ths were also affected by this, and were also defeated despite two close singles encounters for Daniel Morris (4-6) and Jake Galluccio (4-6).
The Year 10 teams produced yet another spirited performance, with the 10A’s being edged 2 sets to 4 (25-27) and the 10B’s drawing 3 sets all (23 all). Joshua Hamilton won his singles in the A-team 6-4, as well as his doubles 6-4 partnered with Oliver Ruse. Oliver was unlucky to be defeated in a thrilling tiebreaker.
The Year 8 teams were beaten convincingly, but will be able to learn from this experience so that they can come back stronger next round. On the other hand, the Year 7 teams came close to taking victories, as both teams were outplayed 2 sets to 4. However, a triumph came in another form, as Jonathan Booy claimed his first win in both his doubles and singles sets, and Ronnie Roth won his first set coming back from an injury.
After a strong performance from the Barker boys and girls, the Waverley tennis boys were looking slightly shaky coming back from the holidays. Another week of training should ensure that we are back to our best in preparation for a tough matchup against Trinity Grammar in Round 9.
