The Waves display good early signs at Homebush!

2016 Athletics Carnival

From the Convenor of Track and Field, Kaitlyn Downey

The Waverley College Track and Field team headed to Homebush on Saturday 12 August for the Barker Invitational Carnival. We had an early start of 8.00am and it was great to see Charles McGrath get a victory for Waverley in the very first event of the day, the 3,000m.

The day delivered a number of other highlights. Barnaby Bickmore-Hutt showed absolute dominance in the 16s, 17s and Opens Javelin, winning all three events and achieving a new personal best. The 100m sprinters deserve special mention for their outstanding results on the day, in particular James Kambas, James Elfes, Christian Smirnotis, James Luland, Charley Howell and Jack Hardwicke-Owen. The entire Middle Distance Brotherhood should be congratulated for the commitment they have shown in training, and they were rewarded on the day with success across the board.

What was most impressive was the number of Year 7 students that turned out to compete. They put in a really big effort and, with the support of the senior students, pulled out some good results. The Year 7 Hurdlers (Jake Weinstein, Dane Towns, Achilles Zanapalis and James Kambas) showed outstanding talent and achieved amazing results as a team. We can’t wait to see what they will achieve throughout the rest of the season.

The Waverley team achieved some very pleasing results. These included:

Opens

  • Hurdles 1st Dylan Quirk

17s

  • 100m 1st Jack Hardwicke-Owen
  • 200m 2nd Jack Hardwicke-Owen
  • Discus 1st Lewis Thompson

15s

  • High Jump 4th Roy Hampshire (1.70m)

14s

  • 200m 2nd Christian Smirnotis
  • 800m 2nd Remy Crompton-Lamb
  • Shot Put 2nd Ben Zlattner

13s

  • 200m 1st James Kambas
  • Discus 3rd Solomon Tuqiri
  • Shot Put 1st Solomon Tuqiri

All the students who competed on the weekend deserve to be congratulated, especially those who competed for the first time, including Ethan King and Caillan Porter in the sprints, and Daniel Brown in the 17s Hurdles. If there are any other Waverley students who would like to get involved in the Track and Field season, you are welcome to come down to training and give it a go.
