From Convenor of Debating, Cassandra Hill

Last Friday, Stephen Croft from Year 12 competed in the annual Lawrence Campbell Oratory Competition held at St Aloysius’ College. This competition is highly regarded in the Public Speaking community with a range of notable individuals having won in the past including Malcolm Turnbull.

The competition is between a chosen representative in year 11 or year 12 from each of the CAS and GPS schools in Sydney. The students are given a quote as a topic and fifteen minutes to plan an eight minute impromptu speech.

Stephen represented the school with pride. He spoke eloquently and engaged the entire audience in his insightful speech. This is the first time in a number of years that Waverley has competed in the competition. Stephen’s effort was indicative of the vast range of skills the students at Waverley possess.

Students are encouraged to become involved in public speaking and debating at Waverley College. It is a great way to improve confidence and explore important issues in our world.
