Term 2

The term has started well at the College and I wish all boys a successful term ahead. Thank you to those Year 7-10 parents that were able to attend parent/teacher/student conferences on Tuesday this week. Hopefully, relevant feedback and strategies were discussed in preparation for the term ahead. Please liaise with your son with regards to formulating his SMART goals for Term 2 that are to be recorded in his school diary on page 85. Input from parents, students and mentors will provide the greatest outcome.

The College offers a variety of programs to further support your son’s academic development, ensuring he achieves his full potential, these include:

The Year 12 Tutorial Program

The Year 12 Tutorial program has started this week and I encourage all boys to make time in their schedules to attend these valuable sessions. Last year’s cohort appreciated the learning and confidence that these tutorials provided with many boys surpassing their academic goals. Learn more in the Tutorial Program article in Year 12 Action Items.

Home Learning Club

All students in Year 5 and Year 6 have the opportunity to receive free additional support after school for the completion of home learning tasks. The afternoon sessions also provide a quiet, supervised study space for students who want to complete their assigned tasks. Home Learning Club operates in the Junior School Learning Hub from 3-4pm, Monday to Thursday. Learn more about the program in Year 6 & 7 Action Items

Strength in Numbers

This program is offered by the College to offer additional support to students who are finding particular concepts difficult to grasp, or who are keen to come in early to complete homework or who are high achievers wanting to embrace extension work.  Strength in Numbers runs every Tuesday and Wednesday morning from 8am in E24. If you are interested in this program please email Ms Phoebe Guirguis, Head of Maths at pguirguis@waverley.nsw.edu.au

Study Groups

The College is committed to support and enhance Literacy and Numeracy across all stages, therefore, we also run Literacy and Numeracy study groups for Years 7 – 10 in the Senior School Library.

Literacy Program – Monday and Tuesday 3:30 – 4:30pm

Numeracy Program – Wednesday and Thursday 3:30 – 4:30pm

Our Cadets will represent the College at the Waverley Council and North Bondi RSL services as well as our own service on Monday. Please see Major Julie-Ann De Kantzow’s ANZAC Day article for further information.

Yom Hashoah 2021 – 80 years since Holocaust in Soviet Union

Yom Hashoah is one of the most important events on the Jewish calendar as it is the day that Jewish people and others remember the Holocaust. This year Yom Hashoah fell between 7-8 April. 2021 is a significant milestone as it denotes 80 years since the Nazi Germany invasion of the Soviet Union. We now know that the Nazis murdered more than one million Jewish people there.

In the 1980s and 1990s many Holocaust survivors from the Soviet Union came to Australia to make a new and happier life, but few of their extraordinary stories have been told. They are stories of extreme courage, privation, resourcefulness and resilience.

Should you wish to view this year’s Yom Hashoah commemoration and its moving speeches, stories and historical photographs, please click: https://www.facebook.com/NSWJBD/videos/vb.305225869610189/257330639189962/?type=2&theater

We must never let ourselves forget the horror of the Holocaust and must always stand up against anti-Semitism, prejudice and discrimination when we see it happening to groups and individuals. It must never be allowed to happen again.

Health Update – COVID-19

Students should not attend school if they exhibit any of the following symptoms and get themselves COVID-19 tested, even if the symptoms are mild.

The NSW Government website provides the following information for parents of secondary school children (12-17 years):

The website also stipulates that if you have any of the following symptoms you need to get tested for COVID-19 immediately: fever (37.5° or higher), cough, sore or scratchy throat, shortness of breath, runny nose, loss of taste or smell, fatigue, acute blocked nose (congestion), loss of appetite, muscle pain, joint pain, headache, diarrhoea, nausea/vomiting and loss of appetite.

It is important to maintain high testing rates to identify as many cases in the community as quickly as possible. The College Health Centre will continue to send students for COVID-19 testing who exhibit any of these symptoms. Please click here for further information.

We really appreciate your support when it comes to sending your child for COVID-19 testing. Please note that any child presenting to school with any of the above symptoms will be sent to the Health Centre to be assessed. The nurses may then contact the student’s parents to come and collect the child for COVID-19 testing. Students cannot return to school unless they have returned a negative COVID-19 result to their Head of House (via email) or to the College nurse.

Ms Adele Cutbush (College Nurse) will be working Monday to Thursday during Term 2 in the Health Centre. On Fridays, we welcome Ms Dani Hillier who joins the College today. Ms Hillier has been a school nurse for 15 years and is a highly skilled and capable health practitioner who is currently working part-time at St Andrew’s Cathedral School.

Should parents or guardians have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact the College nurse on 9369 0644 or email healthcentre@waverley.nsw.edu.au

Staff Farewell

We farewell Katrina King this week – Junior School Learning Support Teacher, who has accepted an exciting opportunity in Learning Support at Sydney Grammar School – Edgecliff. Katrina has worked at the College for 15 years and has been instrumental in the development of all our students, particularly those who have required tailored programs. Katrina has been a passionate learning support teacher and has made a significant positive impact on the learning outcomes of students in the Junior School. I would like to thank her for her dedication to the College and wish her the very best in her future endeavours.

The 2021 Da Vinci Decathlon will take place from 4-5 May for students in Years 7-11.  The competition comprises teams of eight completing a variety of highly-academic tasks ranging from code-breaking, creative producers and ideation to cartography, engineering and art/poetry. Students work collaboratively on challenges throughout the day based on their areas of interest and/or subject strengths. The competition itself is designed to ‘stretch brains’ and challenge students to go beyond the curriculum to complete tasks.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions the competition will be run internally at Waverley College instead of at Knox Grammar School.

Should your son be interested in participating, please email Ms Boyce, Academic Enrichment Coordinator, sboyce@waverley.nsw.edu.au for an expression of interest form before Tuesday 27 April, as spaces are limited.

Dear Year 10 Parents and Carers,

Please click here to view the interview schedule for the Career Profile interviews beginning on Monday, 17 May  – Friday, 4 June, 2021

The interview will take your son through his profile and help him to get started on exploring some career ideas, prior to his subject selections for Years 11 and 12.

Interviews will be running during school lesson time via Zoom in the Careers Resources Room and Meeting rooms on level 1 of the Administration building.

Parents can join the Zoom meeting from work or home by copying and clicking on the relevant link at the top of the schedule. This link will also be sent to your son who can forward it to you.  Please note that there are 6 links – your son’s link appears in column A and the link has been published at the top of the schedule.

A friendly reminder Music Camp will be held from Wednesday 5-7 May 2021 at Naamaroo Uniting Venues, Chatswood.

The primary focus is the development of the Concert Band, Jazz Ensemble, the College Choir and Guitar Ensemble. We will endeavour to improve the standard of our young musicians, expand their repertoire and to strengthen relationships among the musicians of the College.

The Music Camp will provide the opportunity to develop and strengthen the level of musicianship across all participating ensembles; specialist music tutors are employed to assist in this process along with the Waverley College full time music staff. It is strongly encouraged that all students participating in the above groups attend this residential music camp.

Students will need to bring the following clothing and equipment:

Students are to meet at the Performing Arts Centre on the morning of Wednesday 5 May at 8am.

The students will return to the PAC prior to the conclusion of the school day on Friday 7 May and can be collected after 3.15pm.

On Tuesday 18 and Wednesday 19 May 2021, the Music Department is launching its first ever Piano Competition!  Open to students both enrolled in the Instrumental Music Program within the College and those taking lessons externally, the Competition offers an opportunity for students to show off their very best playing whilst under the scrutiny of a respected invited adjudicator.

It provides a chance to build confidence and performing skills in front of an audience, including their peers, as well as the incentive to learn and prepare repertoire to the highest level possible. Additionally, it allows the occasion to hear other students in the same area of study and to compare performances and receive helpful notes from an expert adjudicator.

It’s all about taking part and enjoying both the process and chance to share your music with others … and possibly take away one of the prizes on offer for each Division!

Winners will be offered the privilege of performing at the annual Waverley College Music Festival, which will be held on Thursday 10 June 2021.

Further information and application forms are available from Ms Kossenberg, PAC Coordinator – please email kkossenberg@waverley.nsw.edu.au

Get thinking about what you would like to play, and submit your application form by Friday 7 May 2021.

The Training Schedule for Term 2 is live.

Please click here to view the fixtures.

Late change: our sincerest apologies, the 9/10B AFL game at Riverview tomorrow has been changed to 3.10pm.

Welcome back to Term 2 and the start of the full winter co-curricular program with a full round of activities this weekend. We are hosting Newington in Rugby and Football, Volleyball, AFL and Tennis are all away against Knox and SBHS.

A huge thank you to all of the coaches and staff that contributed to our various holiday programs for AFL, Football, Volleyball and Rugby. Special mention of the 1st XI Football who were plate winners in the St Andrew’s Cup (3rd place).

I want to also thank all of the students who gave up many hours of their holidays to continue training and especially the 1st XV, 2nd XV and 16A Rugby players, coaches and parents who travelled to St Edmund’s College, Canberra last Saturday with all teams having successful matches. Not only was the Rugby of a high standard, but also the camaraderie formed by the students on the trip down and back. The camaraderie is one of the best parts of these sorts of trips.

We also had successful individuals competing in various tournaments including Roger Sweeney winning the U16 Boys Singles Tennis Open Gardens in Darwin; and Ehren Little, Tristan Lee, Aidan Lee, Lincoln Tanner and Archie Godby all medalling and competing at the NSW Water Polo championships. We have a number of students also competing at the Australian surf lifesaving titles this weekend and we wish them all the best.

With an interrupted end to the term due to the weather, we are still finalising teams and we will be reselecting teams based on performances against opposition over the next couple of weeks. We thank all players and parents for their patience with this.

I also want to take this opportunity to remind all students, parents and spectators of the CAS Codes of Conduct: as well as COVID-19 protocols still applying to all school sporting venues. Ultimately we need to ensure we are representing the College to the highest standards with our behaviour, presentation and language, and always respecting officials and all members of the opposition.

Good luck to all teams and activities this weekend and ‘Go the Waves!’

Giving Day – we have raised $228,118

On 31 March we proudly launched our inaugural Giving Day to raise much-needed funding for means-tested Edmund Rice Bursaries for students and families doing it tough, both within our community and further afield.

I’m pleased to endorse that the day was a resounding success. At the time of publishing, we have raised $228,118!

Thank you everyone. Thanks to the generous support of our matching benefactors, we were able to triple the amazing number of donations of parents, students and community members. We not only exceeded our original target of $120,000 but also our second target of $200,000!

Even though we’ve reached our target, we are still accepting donations this week. Every dollar helps us fund more hardship bursaries for more students. You can see your donation and the donations of other Waverley community members on our Giving Day page here: www.charidy.com/wc

Large events like this flourish because of the help and expertise of many hands, both on the day and behind the scenes in the preceding weeks. I am sincerely grateful for the parent, Old Boy and student volunteers and our own Waverley staff for giving their time and energy on Giving Day – we honestly could not have done it without you.

We particularly thank:

Easter Reflection

During Lent we are called to turn again and be reconciled with God so that we fully embrace the hope that comes with Easter. When we have hope in the promise of the resurrection we can completely surrender to the love of God and give ourselves completely to building the community of love:

I abandon myself into your hands;

do with me what you will.

Whatever you may do, I thank you:

I am ready for all, I accept all.

Let only your will be done in me

and in all your creatures-

I wish no more than this, O Lord.

Into your hands I commend my soul:

I offer it to you with all the love of my heart,

for I love you, Lord, and so need to give myself,

to surrender myself into your hands without reserve,

and with boundless confidence,

for you are the One.

I wish all in our community a safe and happy Easter.
