UMAT 2018

Thinking of studying medicine, dentistry or health sciences? You need to know about UMAT.

UMAT stands for the Undergraduate Medicine and Health Sciences Admission Test. It’s a test that’s designed to help select students for undergraduate medicine and health science programs for participating universities.

If you’re in your final year of secondary school and want to enter a medicine or health science degree next year then you need to sit UMAT in 2018. It’s only held once a year.

In 2018 it will be held on Wednesday 25 July , 2018

It’s an aptitude test. It’s designed to test your attributes and abilities, specifically in

They test for these skills because they’re considered highly important for the study and practice of medicine and health sciences. It’s not based on the curriculum you study at school, and doesn’t require any knowledge or skills in maths, sciences, or any other area. They simply use these results, in combination with other selection criteria, to determine successful candidates for the specified medical and health science degrees.

You can find out more about the structure of the test, and the registration procedure in their downloadable Guide.

Prepare for UMAT

You don’t have to complete any kind of preparation course, but practising the test online and completing a UMAT workshop might help you feel more comfortable about sitting the test and give you confidence on the day.

Their website states:

Intensive preparation is not advisable or necessary.  However, wide and critical reading may provide helpful preparation and, as with any test, some practice in answering questions of a similar type, and under similar time constraints as those found in the real test is helpful and reassuring to most candidates. It is also helpful to practice using a machine-readable answer sheet similar to the one in the actual test.”

The UMAT website offers official UMAT practice tests (the first one is free with your registration). They don’t endorse any external preparation courses, nor do they help develop those courses.

From the Head of College, Graham Leddie

In this very busy week the College marks both the “National Action Day Against Bullying” and the Leukaemia Foundation’s “World’s Greatest Shave” campaigns, which have built into significant events at the College over the last few years, and 2018 is no exception.

National Day of Action Against Bullying

We have Brainstorm Productions presenting to our Years 7, 8, 9 and 10 students this week. Each presentation covers a variety of activities with respect to their developmental years and aims to teach the boys appropriate responses and support mechanisms to beat bullying. All boys from Years 5 to 12 will be involved in a collaborative artwork that rejects violence and bullying in all its forms.

We also have renowned Psychologist and Author Dr Michael Carr-Gregg presenting to parents tonight in the Cosgrove Centre at 7pm. The topics covered in this presentation will include how to spot bullying, cyberbullying, how to respond if your child is the victim of bullying and how to respond if your child is bullying others. Michael is a dynamic speaker and one of Australia’s most respected experts on adolescent psychology. My thanks go to the Waverley College Parent Association for supporting this event.

World’s Greatest Shave

Thank you to the many boys and parents who have donated to the Leukaemia Foundation’s ‘World’s Greatest Shave’ event this week to help find a cure for brain cancer. Thank you also to the many students that have donated and had their heads shaved in support of the cause. Total money raised at this point is just over $14000 … a great result. If you would still like to donate, the link is:

https://my.leukaemiafoundation.org.au/waverleycollege.

NAPLAN Online Testing

Students in Year 5, 7 and 9 will undergo a mandatory NAPLAN online practice test next week. This is part of the preparation for schools that are conducting NAPLAN online later in the year. While the test run is a little inconvenient from a school point of view, it should serve as a good practice run for the students involved.

Matthew Talbot Hostel

I received a letter of thanks to the Waverley College Community this week from the Matthew Talbot Hostel:

Thank you to the teachers and students who always attend their duties reliably, enthusiastically and energetically and are respectful, courteous and show a caring manner towards the men.

Thank you kindly for donating once again to our Christmas hampers for 2017. Please be assured your donation items go directly to our clients for free and bring joy to men of the Talbot on what can be a difficult and lonely day. The Talbot survives through the generous support of the community and your teachers and students are a wonderful example of this support.

Yours sincerely

Marty Nezval

Volunteer Manager

Matthew Talbot Hostel

The school has a longstanding relationship with the hostel and is proud to work with the Matthew Talbot clients.

Flu and Colds

As we change seasons, it is timely to remind boys to wash their hands throughout the day. Getting into good hygiene habits is the best way of avoiding the transfer of flu and other illnesses.

Meningococcal

NSW Health works with Waverley College to offer the Meningococcal ACWY vaccine (Menactra) to all boys in Year 10 and 11. Please complete the consent forms and return them as soon as possible so your son can be vaccinated against this deadly condition. Having worked in a previous school that lost two boys to meningococcal in the space of six weeks, I recommend supporting this public health program.

Headspace

I attended a Principals’ forum this week at Headspace Bondi Junction and was updated on their clinic’s operations over the last 12 months. One of the alarming statistics presented was that, on average, most adolescents were hanging on to concerns or issues for six months before seeking assistance. Encourage your sons to seek early intervention, either through talking with yourselves, a College psychologist or the team at Headspace. The peak age for referrals was Year 11 and 12 as commitments and study pressures rose. Headspace offer support in physical health (sleep and exercise), mental health (anxiety and depression), sexual health and alcohol and drug use.

Sailing

Congratulations to Will Cooley who recently qualified for the 2018 Australian Sailing Youth Team who will compete at the 2018 Youth Olympic Games. He achieved this through his performances in the 2018 Australian Nacra15 Championships (1st) and the 2018 Australian Youth Championships Nacra15 (1st).

Will Cooley racing

NSW Surf Lifesaving

Congratulations to all students who competed at the recent NSW Surf Life Saving Championships. It is pleasing to see so many of our boys are community minded and many give up their time to carry out surf beach patrol along with honing their skills in competition.

Congratulations to Noah Harvard who won the U17 Single Ski, U19 Double Ski and U19 Ski Relay. He also came second in the U17 Taplin Relay, U17 Ski Relay and the Open Male Rescue Tube Rescue.

Congratulations also to boys that competed:

Jonathon Schacht, Freddie Felix, Oliver Hayes, James Bodkin, Ned Wieland, Duke Wieland, Jake Lewis, Oliver Hackers, James Bodkin, Will Davison, Makenzie Palmer, Kai Jones, Jake Walker, Max Court, Zac Bloch, Cater Hjorring, Ben Leet, Luca Whitaker, Campbell Groves, Wylie Durrans, Ben Finegan, Max Leedham, Charles Winkelmeier, Leo Astridge, Oliver Elliott, Liam Davis, Jimmy Ashbridge, Toby Unsworth, Zach Wilde, Jay Palm, Evan Athanassiou, Nick Quinn, Harrison Palmer, Baxter Flynn, Jude Sedley, Hugh Clothier, Tom Clothier.

I am sure this is not a complete list, please inform the College via the Director of Co-curricular Mr Steve O’Donnell or the Assistant Director of Co-curricular Ms Stephanie Floyd about activities that your sons are involved in outside of the College. We want to have a complete picture of their commitments and would love to be able to recognise their achievements. I apologise to those not listed.

From the Director of Mission, Phil Davis

Raising Teens/Male Image: Parent Evening

“At a time where parents can feel overwhelmed and powerless to address such issues as sex, pornography, dating and relationships there is a huge amount parents can do.”

David Kobler, yourchoicez.com.au

On Tuesday Evening 27 March, 6.30pm-8.00pm, Mr David Kobler  from Your Choicez will be speaking to parents about raising teenagers and the pressures associated with social media.  This will take place in the Br R J Wallace Performing Arts Centre (PAC) and is open to parents from all year groups. You need to book on the  EVENTS PAGE

As the area of male Image and male role modelling will be an important part of this discussion, it is important that a good number of Dads make it a priority to attend this Parent Evening!

Year 11 students will be addressed by Mr Kobler also on Tuesday 27 March during Periods 1-6 in a Seminar for Young Men. Mr Kobler will cover male image, relationships, and the harmful effects of pornography during this seminar.

Conlon House Mass

Last Friday, 9th March, 2018, the Conlon House Mass, was celebrated by College Chaplain Fr Bernie Thomas ofm . The Gospel (Matthew 9:18-19, 23-26), which was acted out by Conlon SRC students, mirrored the message Speak through Action, the theme which our Year 12 Leaders have chosen for 2018. Conlon Prefect of Spirituality, Jonathon Schacht connected this theme with life at Waverley College in his Reflection.

Other features of this Mass included the Entry Procession and Gospel Procession, while the Communion Reflection Song If You’re Out There by John Legend aptly connected to the idea that actions speak louder than words. I would like to thank the staff and students responsible for the organisation and specific roles during the Mass. I would also like to thank MS O’Sullivan, Head of Conlon House, for her assistance, as well as the many parents who attended the Conlon House Mass. The next House Mass is the Green House Mass, Friday 6th April, 8.00am in the College Chapel

Below is Conlon Prefect of Spirituality, Jonathon Schacht’s Reflection:

Today I invite you to reflect on the Gospel and the readings, to inherit some ideas on how you, as Colon students, may benefit from these words.

Edmund Rice in the first reading had a deep desire to help the poor, rough boys of Waterford. His dream then turned into reality through his actions. For all of us, we can all have a dream. That is free. We can tell everyone about the dream. That is free also. But to achieve our dreams or our goals we must find strength to do.

As Waverley College students we are very fortunate that we can dream big.

We can dream about a variety of things whether it be on the sporting pitch or aspiring for a personal best in the classroom. We can talk all about these dreams but if we do not do, these dreams stay dreams.

In the Gospel, we see Jesus bring someone back from the dead. While those who witnessed this would have been amazed, there was a period of ridicule from those standing around. Despite their judgement, Jesus is able to bring the child back to life anyway.

The actions and ideas of Jesus are applicable in our lives also, as we must put aside the preconceived idea of what we believe is impossible, to make the impossible, possible. We must also push aside those who may doubt us and may potentially stop us from having a try. Jesus “speaks through action” by acting despite ridicule, and this results in the child coming back to life.

It is not only Jesus who is the hero in the Gospel. The leader of the synagogue doesn’t just hope Jesus will cure his child, but actually goes and finds Jesus. He doesn’t just ask Jesus for help, he leads him back. Action.

Overall, today’s readings link to this year’s theme of “Speak through Action.”

Don’t just talk about what you’re ‘going’ to do… actually do it.

If you see a boy in your year sitting alone at lunch, do you go and sit next to him? Or do you snigger to your mates and keep on walking. If your class mate has no lunch, do you lend him money, or do you go on to the tuck shop and bye yourself something extra.

Actions really do speak louder than words. Take that extra step and challenge the possibilities of your own limitations and be the change that you want to see, just as Jesus did.

From Director of Waterford, Anthony Banboukjian

Prayer for the week

As we continue on our Lenten journey this week let us pray:

God of Hope,

In our darkness you see the spark of your light.
In our struggles, you wrestle with us.
In our pain and suffering, you hurt with us,
In our weakness you lend us your strength.
In our ignorance, you try to teach us wisdom.
In our selfishness, you lead us to your way of the cross.
In the breaking down of our relationships you pave the way towards reconciliation.
In our falling short of your glory, you lift our eyes to see our potential.
Into our desperation you bring hope.
Into our brokenness you bring healing.
Into our failure you bring redemption.
Into our living you bring meaning and purpose.
Into our dying you bring life.

God of Hope,
Christ with us,
Redeem and transform us,
That we may truly be your people.

We ask this through Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Thankyou to Mr Ghattas & Father Bernie

Thanks to all those boys and parents who joined us at mass on Saturday 10 March at Mary Immaculate Church. To see over 100 boys and families there to celebrate mass together at a non-compulsory school event was something special.

This was made even more so thanks to the beautiful liturgy given by Father Bernie; the wonderful singing & participation by our boys.

Special thanks to the following boys who assisted during the mass: Archie Godby, Bailey Barker, Fox Stapleton, Maximus Fitzpatrick-Levingston and Zack Mollica.

Well done Mr Ghattas and thanks to all the staff who attended at the church and preparing the barbecue.

Last Week of Summer Saturday Sport For Term 1

This Saturday sees all our Junior School teams play their last game of the term. As usual the participation has been great and the sportsmanship first class – well-done boys.

Please note this is also the last week of training for all summer teams this term.

Special mention

Over the last week or so a number of boys have been selected to represent the College at trials for both CIS AFL and IPSHA Football.

The following boys traveled down to Canberra to trial for the CIS AFL Team:

Congratulations to Nate and Henry who will compete for CIS in the upcoming PSSA Carnival. Tashi was unlucky not to be selected.

The following boys headed off to Knox on Monday hoping to make the IPSHA Team for the CIS Football selection carnival:

Unfortunately none of the Waverley boys made it through but all five enjoyed the experience – well done.

Congratulations to:

Luke Newrick Year 5 who represented South Maroubra at the State Nipper Championship finishing with a Silver medal: Under 10s Beach Sprint and a Silver Medal: All age Beach relay.

Ben Pignatelli (5G) and Jack Johnson (5G) represented Coogee SLSC. They were both members of the team who won the Bronze medal in the U10 boy’s beach relay. Jack won a second bronze as part of the U10 mixed beach relay.

Zoltahn Szabo and Tristan Lee both belong to Coogee Nippers and attended the State Nipper Championships. They unfortunately did not get a medal but did extremely well in many of their events. Tristan came 7th in the swim final and Zoltahn came 10th. A top 10 placing at these events is definitely an accomplishment with such a large contingent of boys from across NSW. They both made many semi-finals in individual and team events.

Jack Johnson (5 Green) was awarded two bronze medals at the slsa Nippers nsw State championships at the weekend. One for U10 boys sand relay and one for U10 mixed sand relay.

Photos

If anyone has photos from Saturday sport or any other Waverley College event that they would like to share with the rest of the College community could I ask you to send them in on a disk or memory stick to the Junior School office.

Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) is everywhere and shapes our everyday experiences, meaning STEM education is vital and we need to encourage students to understand and embrace these core subject areas. The STEM tour, running in 2019, will expose students to a new realm of learning experiences centered around the space industry in the United States of America.

You can find out more about the application process, costs and dates at a STEM Tour information night, on Thursday 5th April at 6.30pm in the TAS building.

From Director of Co-curricular, Stephen O’Donnell

Summer season ends

Well done to all of our summer co-curricular activities who concluded the season last weekend. We had a great season and a huge thank you to all convenors, staff, coaches, parents and students for their tremendous efforts over the season. Special to mention to the Year 12 students who have now played their last game of summer sport for the college. A big thank you also to the water polo, cricket and basketball supporter groups for their efforts over the season and the presentation events last weekend.

Arrangements for commencement of winter season

We have now commenced our winter co-curricular season and most students have winter sport trials this Saturday. We also have a large number of boys attending cadet camp at the end of this week. These students will still be considered in regard to team selections. Saturday 24 March will see continued selection trials but also all A’s squads in football and rugby will play a football blitz tournament and 7’s rugby. Our staff and coaches will be doing their best with selections but no teams are set in concrete and good performance and attitude will result in promotion. A reminder to all students to ensure they wear the correct sport uniform and equipment for their activities – do not forget mouthguards, boots and shin-pads. It is also vital that all students regularly hydrate at training and games as the weather is still warm. A reminder that any absence from weekend commitments requires a medical certificate. Leave requests must be in writing, two weeks’ prior to the absence, with a maximum of two requests per year.

Baseline testing for concussion & other health support

We will be baseline concussion testing our at-risk students over the next few weeks. This an important part of the well-being of all students and will give us a measure of when students can return to play based on these results. There is no cost for this other than bulk billing based on Medicare numbers. We will always have a physiotherapist and paramedic at Queens Park on Saturdays in the winter season and we also send a physiotherapist to away games. If any student suffers a concussion playing club sport it is vital that we are made aware of this as soon as possible, as this will affect their ability to also play for the College.

Why we play sport

Parents and students are reminded to be familiar with the CAS Codes of Conduct for players and spectators. Appropriate respect for all players, officials and the opposition community is essential. This is schoolboy sport and, whilst we love to win, participating in co-curricular at the College is first and foremost about:

I wish our CAS swimming and diving squads the very best for the championships this Thursday. The students have been working very hard. I am also really looking forward to hearing our supporters in full voice when we are singing ‘Sweet Caroline’ and ‘Living on a Prayer’. We have a number of students competing in the National Junior Athletics Championships on Thursday: Dane Towns, Charles McGrath and Alex Talbot will be representing the College at the highest level. Best wishes to these students for every success.

Good luck to all students in their various activities this week and ‘Go the Waves!’

From Captain of Tennis, Kiva Gwynne

The final matchup of the 2018 summer tennis season was a tough one for the Waverley Tennis boys, with Barker taking out the majority of fixtures across the board.

The 1sts and 2nds were both subdued 8 sets to 0, with the opposition evidently too strong for the Waverley boys. Lachlan Unsworth almost broke the duck in a close singles set, in which he was edged 4 games to 6.  The 3rds and 4ths both lost 6-0, with Arturo Montesinos coming ever so close to victory in a tiebreaker loss. A special mention goes to Mrs. Unsworth and the parents for the 1sts and 2nds, who have been dedicated to providing magnificent morning teas for the open’s home games.

The Year 7’s have continued their hot form, especially the 7C’s, who won 4 sets to 2 (33-16). The doubles pairing of Jo Jo Cumpston and Jonas Dowling could not be stopped as they completely battered their Barker counterparts 6-0, both going on to win their singles matches 6-0 and 6-2, respectively. The 7D’s were unfortunate to lose 6 sets to 0.

Whilst the 8A’s were defeated 6 sets to 0, the 8B’s turned it around as they won by the closest margin possible – 3 sets all, 30 games to 29. Aidan Trovato put in a valiant effort in winning all of his sets: his singles 6-4, and doubles 6-2 with Cuba Kanakis. 8C’s and D’s both lost 6 sets to 0.  The year 9 and 10 teams all lost 6 sets to 0, with the best effort coming from Oscar Madden and Nathan Barry, who lost their doubles 5-7 in the 9A’s.

As the season concludes, a huge thanks goes to Coach Steve Day, Ms. Attard, and all of the teachers and students who have contributed to a memorable summer of tennis across all age groups and teams.  Leading into winter pre-season training, the Waverley Tennis boys are anticipating a successful winter season.

Their efforts helped build the sport at Waverley from its beginnings and is reflected in the qualities the awarded is selected upon such as dedication and contribution to the sport. Congratulations to Jasper.

His parents are very proud to see his spirit continued in this award and what it stands for. Congratulations to Anthony.

Preseason

It is fantastic to see such a positive start to the year at training on Monday! A number of teachers across the school have commented on how excited the boys are ahead of the upcoming season, which was evident in the very energetic opening training session. Unfortunately, due to wet weather this was our only training of the week.

Most students (13s, 14s & 15s) should have now commenced preseason training at Queens Park. We look forward to our 16s and Opens commencing this weekend. A reminder that 13s, 14s and 15s train on Monday and Wednesday (3:30pm-5:00pm). 16s and Opens train on Tuesday and Thursday (3:30pm – 5:00pm).

It is extremely important that all players attend trainings or age group meetings, particularly at the starting point of the season. Rugby is a team sport and when players do not show up or do not put in, it takes away the opportunity for teams to bond – which is one of the greatest parts of the game. With this in mind, there will be consequences for students who fail to turn up to training (without a note) or without their training gear.

Internal Trials/Training Sessions – Saturday 17 March

We will be holding Internal Trials as well as Training sessions for all age groups this Saturday 17 March.  Please take note of the following arrangements for each age groups:

13s years – Players will be involved in Internal Trials. All players are to bring along a Waverley Jersey as well as another coloured Jersey for trials, as well as standard playing gear (rugby shorts, socks, boots, mouthguard and headgear (not compulsory)). Due to the large numbers in the 13s group has been split into two trialling times (two groups – 8:00am and 9:30am). At a meeting on Wednesday at lunchtime, players were made aware of which time they need to attend. If any students are unsure, they are required to attend the 8:00am trial. All coaching staff will be watching both trial periods to monitor player performance for grading.

14s years – Players will be involved in Internal Trials. All players are to bring along a Waverley Jersey as well as another coloured Jersey for trials, as well as standard playing gear (rugby shorts, socks, boots, mouthguard and headgear (not compulsory)).  Due to the large numbers in the 14s group will be split into two trialling times (two groups – 11:00am and 12:30pm). At a meeting on Wednesday at lunchtime, players were made aware of which times they need to attend. If any students are unsure, they are required to attend the 11:00am trial. All coaching staff will be watching both trial periods to monitor player performance for grading.

15s years – Due to a significant amount of students in the 15s years age group involved in cadet camp, this age group will be holding a training sessions rather than internal trials. All 15s players need to be at QP6 at 8:30am for a 9:00am start.

16s years – Due to not having a training sessions in the opening week of preseason, this age group will be holding a training sessions rather than internal trials. All 16s need to be at QP1 at 12:30pm for a 1:00pm start.

Opens years – Students selected in the 1st XV & 2nd XV trialling squad will have a match on QP1 commencing at 10:00am. Due to not having a training sessions in the opening week of preseason, all other players in the Opens (3rd XV to 5th XV Squad) will be involved in a training sessions rather than internal trials. Players in this group will need to meet on QP1 at 11:00am for a 11:30am start.

In the event of wet weather, students are encouraged to ring the Sports Information line on 02 8250 3780. Students are also encouraged to check their student emails, especially if they are not able to connect via phone.

CAS Sevens Day – Saturday 24 March

On Saturday 24 March, Waverley College will be involved in the CAS Sevens Day. Squads will be selected from each age group to participate in this tournament which will take place at various CAS schools.

Coaches will inform those students selected in these squads at trainings/meetings next week. All other students not involved in CAS Sevens will be involved in Internal Trial matches on this day, which will be held again at Queens Park.

Those students who will be returning from Cadet Camp on Friday 23rd March will be expected to attend trials on Saturday 24th March or, if selected, the CAS Sevens.

Team Selections

I appreciate a number of parents have contacted me regarding team selections. Further to this, I anticipate parents will contact me in the coming weeks regarding team selections and the protocol we have in place.

At Waverley College we aim to give all players a “fair go” in trying to reach their potential (make the highest team possible). However, it can sometimes take time to establish the correct grading of individual players into teams.

Last year, we had students starting off in “D” grade eventually make it into “A” grade half way through the season. Again, this was a process that took time.

We are very fortunate to have a number of GPS trial rounds this season to ensure the teams are well arranged prior to the commencement of the CAS competition which commences at the end of Term 2.

Ultimately, we ask all players to strive to do the best for the school in whatever team they may start off in. This will lead to a greater brand of rugby, player enjoyment and continued success from the 1st XV to the 13Es.

Good luck to all students involved in the Internal Trials and Training Sessions this weekend!

WAVERLEY TO WIN!

From Convenor of Cricket, John McCallum

Over 280 players, coaches and families enjoyed the Cricket Presentation Evening last Saturday after the final Senior School round of the season.  A BBQ dinner and a great social atmosphere begun proceedings as friends shared highlights of their seasons. Coaches awards, new training shirts from our Supporter’s group and a humorous NZ Tour account from Jacob Tomasiello and Ben Scarf were enjoyed, and our Year 12 students were thanked for their outstanding contributions toward Cricket and their team mates.

Our special guest was Australian allrounder Moises Henriques – who spoke on overcoming Challenges, how he trains as an all-rounder and the benefits touring overseas has made with his game.  He was highly engaging in speaking to the audience, and the boys were inspired and thankful for being able to also speak with Moises, have photos and receive awards and training shirts. Moises is a fantastic ambassador for himself and the Sydney 6er’s, and certainly made plenty of fans – and he’s also now keen to return next season to do coaching of some Waverley boys!

Moises at the Waverley Cricket Presentation

Brother Murphy also gave boys an insight to how cricket has both evolved – but also remained much the same since he grew up in Queensland, before presenting the Br Murphy player of the year awards.  This Year’s Winner was Jack Hardwicke-Owen from the 1st XI, with 343 runs at an average of 31.8, 9 wickets, 5 catches and 2 stumpings. 2nd place was Ben Scarf, 3rd Alex Ferrara, 4th Ryan Connolly, 5th was Murray Shearer from the 9As and 6th Conor Boyd-Boland from the 9As.

Team Award Winners:

7A Coaches Award: Lachlan Grant

7B Coaches Award: Alistair Isaac

7C Coaches Award: James Fragias

8A Coaches Award: Daniel McSweeney

8B Coaches Award: Luca Derbyshire

8C Coaches Award: Dexter Craddock

9A Coaches Award: Matthew McAlpine

9B Coaches Award: Nick Quinn

9C Coaches Award: Lachlan Muir

10A Coaches Award: Ollie Rinder

3rd XI Coaches Award: Zane Zilich

2nd XI Coaches Award: Darcy Mullins.

1st XI Coaches Award: Reid McNamara

All players who scored over 50 runs or took 5 wickets or more in an innings will be receiving their individual awards at the college’s Summer Sports Assembly on 5 April.

On the field, there were some great performances against Barker College, with a highlight being an amazing tie in the 7a game from the final ball! Knox batted first to be 7 for 176, Waverley chased the score down with a single off the last ball to tie. In the Bowling, Scott Swinburn took 6 for 21 off 8 overs, whilst in batting, Waverley required 110 off the last 10 overs and 17 to win off the last over. Scott Swinburn 59 off 45 balls, Lachlan Grant 23 off 12 balls and Fred Le Vey 12 off 7 balls were the stars, so great effort boys!  The 7Bs and 7Cs went down, despite strong batting by Jack Crotty, Rex Whale and Alexander Polihronas. Another star was Year 6 boy Hunter Eldridge, who took a Hat trick for the Prep 1sts, and backs up 3 scores of 50 runs already this term!

Year 12 2nds Cricket 2018

Despite all opens sides falling short in pursuit of final-round victories, Sebastian Rasmussen scored a damaging 56 and took 2 wickets, and Zane Zilich scored 30 In their final matches for the 3rd XI. All Yr 12 boys can feel proud of the manner in which they developed strong friendships and played attacking and competitive Cricket in the correct fashion. I also wish to sincerely thank all the dedicated coaches of each side for their energy and expertise they willingly shared with their teams. Thank you to the amazing Cricket Supporter’s Group for such strong support of Cricket, including the running of the Queens Park canteen and with our Presentation Evening. Thank you also to the many boys and parents who volunteered to arrive early or stay later in order to set up and clean up on Presentation Evening. I wish our winter sports and boys all the continued success and enjoyment.

Moises Henriques with Year 5 Cricketers

1st XI Round 10 v Barker

From Coaches John Boyd and Greg Elliott

Waverley won the toss and asked Barker to bat. The bowlers did a good job and after 22 overs Barker was in a spot of trouble at 5 for 66 with wickets to Benjamin Scarf, Harry Whiteman and 4 to Jack Hardwicke-Owen. Some aggressive batting followed and 116 was on the board before Ryan Connolly claimed the breakthrough. Jack Hardwicke-Owen picked up his 4th and was unlucky not to bag 5 when an lbw was turned down. The tail waged and when the final wicket fell on the last ball of the innings, Barker had made 156.

After the lunch break 156 seemed a very attainable total but another very poor start saw wickets tumble at very regular intervals to see Waverley crumble to its second lowest total of the season 87, batting for just 25.2 overs. Benjamin Scarf with 22, Darcy Mullins 12 and Alex Ferrara 10 were the only batsmen to reach double figures. After turning 2nd on the table at Christmas and defeating Knox in round 6 the team has had a very disappointing end to the season.

On a brighter note, congratulations to all the coach award winners from every team. This award is not for the best player in each team but the player who over the whole season has shown the attitude and commitment to training and who goes the extra bit to improve. Reid McNamara won the award for the 1st XI with Jacob Tomasiello and Harry Whiteman not far behind. I would like to thank all the wonderful parents of the 1st XI players for the efforts they put in on lunches and teas at Queens Park this season. Your efforts make a long Saturday at Queens a lovely place to be.

2018 CAS representatives Scarf, Hardwicke-Owen, Ferrarra and Connolly
