I would like to take the opportunity to thank all families for a wonderful Term 2. Some highlights from this term have been the wonderful Year 5 Camp where the boys connected with nature, pushed themselves out of their comfort zones, and made new friendships. Both the Year 5 and Year 6 History Showcases were outstanding this year. The enthusiasm displayed and the quality of work produced were extremely high.
It was amazing to see the commitment and team spirit displayed by all students at Saturday sport and training sessions throughout the term, despite the weather. It has been truly impressive to see the sportsmanship among the students and how far they have developed as a team.
I hope the Parent/Student/Teacher interviews this week were valuable and gave you a chance to connect with your son’s teacher, go through their Semester One Report, and set goals for next term. Knowing where your son is currently academically and socially is vital in order to set new goals and reassess current ones.
I hope the break provides much-needed rest and family time. I look forward to seeing the students return to school in Term 3 renewed and ready to take on Semester 2.
Congratulations to Finn Constable. His imaginative writing has been selected as one of the top entries for the WriteOn 2024 competition. This annual contest, open to NSW primary students in Years 1-6, challenges young writers to craft a creative 500-word story inspired by a specific image. Finn’s piece stood out among numerous submissions and will now advance to the final judging round. A selected panel of school sector and NESA representatives judge the WriteOn competition.
Samuel Loughrey, Jack Bird, Silas Murphy and Alex O’Brien were awarded Highly Commended for their writing submissions.

On Thursday, 13 June, our Year 9 da Vinci Decathlon team hosted the ‘MiniVinci Decathlon’ for students in Years 5 and 6 at the Junior School.
Due to the popularity of the Decathlon held at Knox Grammar School, the event was held as an internal, student-run initiative, with four teams from the Junior School.
This competition required students to compete in teams of eight across 10 disciplines: Engineering, Mathematics, Code Breaking, Art and Poetry, Science, English, Ideation, Creative Producers, Cartography and Legacy.
Our Year 9 team took on the responsibility of supervising teams, marking papers, and overseeing the competition. This student-led initiative provided a remarkable opportunity for us to demonstrate leadership skills and quick-thinking abilities.
Overall, witnessing the level of engagement, involvement and active participation among the Junior School students was truly inspiring, demonstrating promise for future success in academic competitions for these students.
– Alex Avdalis, Year 9
I worked on English and Engineering, as well as on Creative Producers where a team performs a one-minute performance on a given topic. This year’s topic was Going Back and Changing a Mistake You Have Made. The team I was in—Team 6.1—won the event. We got a chocolate medal, a merit, and a da Vinci Decathlon award. It was an overall fun experience.
– Ollie Johnson, 6 Indigo
The Year 6 Winning Team (L to R): Thomas Sheehy, Luke Haddock, Xavier Burns, Sam Fisher, Thomas Taylor, Ollie Johnson, Harry Robinson, Zac Bentley.
The event was marvellously put on by some Year 9 students, Ms Barry from the Senior School and our enrichment teachers Ms Fitzgerald and Ms Edwards, and was an incredible day.

We are so proud of the boys who represented Waverley at the AFL Paul Kelly Cup on Tuesday this week at Queens Park. The sun was shining and spirits were high as the boys laced up to take on their rival schools. They played 5 games overall, dominating each match to play the top team in the semi-finals.
1st game: 30-0 win against Woollahra PS
2nd game: 70-7 win against St Andrew’s PS
3rd game: 32-15 win against Randwick PS
Semi Final: 32-10 win against St Andrew’s PS
As final teams were announced, to no surprise the Waverley boys were in. With the Waverley chant being heard from across the oval, the boys took on their opponents to win the grand final 41-2.
Highlights of the day were first goals kicked by Ziggy Sarkozy, Cillian Stankard and Bart Carmody, coach Cian getting saturated by water bottles in celebration after the win and Jordy’s fluoro pink sock and boot combination that could be seen from anywhere sprinting down the field. The boys will play at the Regional Final in Five Dock in the upcoming months.
I wish everyone a safe and enjoyable winter break, and look forward to Rounds 8 to 10 of Winter Sport continuing next term. Training will resume in the first week of Term 3.

We offer all students in Year 5 and Year 6 the opportunity to receive free additional support after school for the completion of home learning tasks. The afternoon sessions also provide a quiet, supervised study space for students who want to complete their assigned tasks.
Home Learning Club operates in the Learning Hub from 3pm until 4pm – Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays – during school term unless there is a scheduled Professional Development meeting and the club will be closed.
Register your son HERE
Only register his name once to allow other students the opportunity to attend. The session is limited to 20 spots. There will be a roll call to ensure attendance.
Students are required to stay for the full session unless there is a message in the student diary requesting early leave, a parent’s signature will be required.
As it is important to respect the rights of others to learn and work, all students are expected to settle to work in the Learning Hub and not cause a disturbance for others.

What is ICAS?
ICAS is an online academic competition designed to assess students’ higher-order thinking and problem-solving skills in English, Mathematics, Science, Writing and Digital Technologies.
Each assessment celebrates students’ accomplishments by providing opportunities for recognition and development. Every student who participates will receive a printed certificate and an online results report. Top performers will be eligible for medals.
If you would like your son to compete in the 2024 ICAS Competitions, you will be asked to nominate which competitions you would like him to be entered in through the Parent Payment System. At the Junior School, the following ICAS competitions are offered: Writing & Digital Technologies, Science & English and Mathematics.
This year all the competitions will be held in August / September, Term 3 and will be completed online in the Learning Hub before school starts. A timetable will be shared closer to the assessment dates.
Click HERE to register your son. Through this system, parents can pay for ICAS directly online while tests will still be held at our school. Please use the school’s access code details to register your child no later than July 23, 2024.

Term 3 is nearly upon us and in August we will be celebrating Book Week at the Junior School. The theme this year is Reading is Magic.
All students from the Junior campus are encouraged to enter one or both of the competitions running for Book Week.
An essential aspect of supporting your son with his reading is to allow him to make his own book choices. The Pop-up Bookshop will be running in Term 3 Week 4. This year I would like to continue with a sustainable and cost-effective Pop-up Bookshop.
If you would like to help with this initiative you can donate pre-loved books that will be sold a very reduced amount. The amounts raised will be donated to one of the Edmund Rice foundations.

In Music this term, both Year 5 and 6 have been exploring the musical concept of ostinatos; or repeated rhythmic patterns found in music.
Using the viral YouTube video ‘Potter Puppet Pals: The Mysterious Ticking Noise’ as inspiration, students then recorded their own versions into GarageBand using the MIDI keyboard, following the notation of the original.
They could then assign each part an instrument of their own choice.
Below is an example from one of our Year 6 students; a screenshot of the project and the audio to listen to.

As we approach the school holidays, I want to thank you all for a wonderful Term 2. Thank you to all our incredible parents/carers for the support you continue to show the College. We appreciate being able to work in collaboration with you.
I would also like to wish everyone a safe and happy holiday period. This time is an opportunity to unwind, recharge, and create wonderful memories with family and friends. Whether you’re travelling or staying close to home, I encourage you to enjoy your time and take care of yourselves.
We look forward to your return in Term 3, refreshed and rejuvenated. Waverley thrives on your energy and enthusiasm, and I look forward to hearing about your adventures and seeing your renewed spirit in the classroom.
Remember to stay safe, make responsible choices, and have fun.
Holidays can be challenging. Without routine, it’s still important to stay healthy and look after yourself.
For some young people, this time of year can be challenging. It can feel as though you’ve been taken away from your usual routine of studies or work and you may not get to see your friends, teachers or workmates as often as you would like to. This can leave you feeling bored, unsupported, upset and sometimes anxious. It’s important to stay healthy and look after yourself. There are a number of ways to help you do this, please take a look at the following Headspace page.
I recently wrote about a new app that has been developed by the Black Dog Institute called ClearlyMe. ClearlyMe is an app designed for teens aged 12-17 who are experiencing depressive symptoms, psychological distress or in other words, going through a tough time.
Depression can be more than just feeling low or sad. It could mean that we are feeling stressed, worried, anxious or overwhelmed. Other times, it could be that we struggle to get out of bed in the morning, and we don’t know why.
It is normal to go through tough times, and usually, they can pass on their own. But sometimes, they stay for a little while longer. And it can be hard to explain this feeling to others, leaving us feeling alone or even unseen.
ClearlyMe can help you to:
As we look towards Term 3, a few reminders around college uniform expectations:
Waverley Council is developing its first strategy to promote walking. We want to make it safer and more pleasant to walk to schools, public transport, shops, parks, and beaches, and to better integrate walking with other modes of transport.
The Waverley Walking Strategy project kicks off in June with a community survey about where people currently like to walk, where they would like to walk more, and what would encourage them to walk more often. The strategy also applies to community members with limited mobility and those who use mobility aids.
Figures from the 2023 Household Travel Survey show that a higher proportion of all daily trips are on foot in Waverley, compared to the Greater Sydney average. All trips, whether by car, public transport or bicycle, involve walking, which means walking is the foundation of our transport system.
The Walking Strategy project is in line with the objectives of the Council’s People, Movement and Places Strategy and the Disability Inclusion Action Plan.
To complete the survey, CLICK HERE. The survey is open until 21 July, 2024.
You can also join the Have Your Say pop-up stand in Bondi Junction, Oxford Street Mall on 10 July, 11:30AM to 1:30PM.
For further information, please contact Leigh Pitkethly, Engagement Officer at leigh.pitkethly@waverley.nsw.gov.au or 9083 8362.
Thank you to staff, parents, alumni and students who have made Term 2 a both successful and productive one across the boys’ spiritual, cognitive, social, emotional and physical dimensions. School Reports for Year 7-10 should have been received yesterday which provide an opportunity to celebrate successes and review areas of development.
Safe travels to our 46 students and 6 staff members as they embark on the 2024 European Music Tour. They have been practising and working towards this trip for 8 months and over the next 15 days, they will perform and immerse themselves in musical and cultural experiences throughout Germany, Austria, Slovenia, Italy, and Switzerland.

Congratulations to James Peate on winning the NSW Speaking competition over the weekend. This is a wonderful achievement for James who is only in Year 11. We will show some of the speech that James’ delivered at College Assembly early next term. James will represent the State at the Nationals being held in Hobart in Term 3.
Congratulations to Jack George in Year 12 who represented Waverley College at the VET Training Awards as a regional finalist, and won the category of ‘VET Student of the Year.’ He will represent Waverley College at state level next month.
Please keep our Year 12’s in your thoughts and prayers at this busy and crucial time of the year, as they continue their preparation for their upcoming trial and then HSC examinations. Thank you to our staff who continue to offer extra tutorials throughout this Term, and through this upcoming holiday period. Please ensure your son maintains good exercise, relaxation time, reduced screen time, good sleep patterns and a healthy diet during this time. Please do not allow your son to change his normal sleep patterns drastically and sleep in. A consistent approach to his day over the next few months is what is required.
Thank you for the support of our community in raising over $4400 for the Hearts 4 Arch charity vision. These funds will provide the Sydney Children’s Hospital Cardiac Unit with the ability to purchase value mobile devices that deliver accurate, personalised heart data to doctors, anytime and anywhere.

I eagerly anticipate the return of students in Term 3 with renewed energy and enthusiasm after a very well deserved break!
Year 5 classes have attended the Senior School Ceramics room this term to immerse themselves in a clay making workshop.
The sessions connect to learning students have completed exploring making a mark and take inspiration from Ms. N. Marawili Baratjala’s style.
The slab works are embossed with leaves collected from our local surrounds, providing a connection to place.
Each student approached the opportunity with enthusiasm and has learnt fundamental ceramic techniques of sgraffito, slip and scoring to create their resolved ceramic platter.

There was an exciting energy from all of our Year 5 students leading into the camp at Stanwell Tops. For many students this was their first time going to camp. I arrived Wednesday afternoon and it was clear that all students had quickly settled into camp life, getting stuck into the wide range of activities on offer.
These included:
In spite of the chilly weather, students embraced all the adventures and activities that pushed them out of their comfort zone each day. All staff were very impressed with the students’ involvement, engagement and support for one another.
The overall experience of Year 5 Camp gave all students every opportunity to create new memories and connections, step out of their comfort zone to face challenges and conquer fears along the way. It taught our boys about resilience, compassion and genuine mateship for one another. It was an experience the boys will hopefully never forget for years to come.
I would like to acknowledge all the Waverley staff who gave up their time to be a part of the experience, and to Stanwell Tops staff who made everyday enjoyable and memorable for our students.
On Wednesday 19 June, the Junior School playground came alive with stories from across the globe as the Year 6 students showcased their Digital Migration stories as part of their learnings in History. Every student had a unique story to tell, either about a close family member, a neighbour or an Australian identity who had their own story of migration. The staff and wider community were so impressed with the quality of I-Movies, costumes and the way the students knew their characters so well. What an amazing day!
Congratulations to Flynn Gilmore for winning the Year 6 Historian of the Year, an amazing achievement.
Thank you so much to all the Parents and Carers who were able to join us on this very special day.

In partnership with the Senior School Art Department, Year 5 Classes have been venturing to the Senior School to work with clay and create their own pottery. This process has allowed Junior School boys to experience a subject in a Senior School setting while also expressing their creativity.
So far 5 Orange and 5 Indigo have participated in this immersive experience with other classes to come. Year 6 will also journey to the Senior School in Term 4 to partake in an art making experience.
We thank Ms Oates very much for providing this opportunity to our Junior School students.

As reports become available I encourage families to consider the following:
Teachers do not rely solely on one piece of assessment to assess your child. In fact teachers will consider:
At Waverley we use an A to E reporting scale and it is important to understand what each grade represents:
An A grade means that a student is performing at Stage level above their current Stage and can do so on a consistent basis.
A B grade means that a student is performing at a higher level in their Stage in most situations.
A C grade means that a student is performing at the expected level for their Stage and meeting those outcomes.
A D grade means that a student is experiencing some difficulty at times in meeting the expected outcomes for their stage.
An E grade means that a student is performing at a level below their current stage.
Teachers look forward to discussing your son’s report at our upcoming Parent/Teacher/Interviews. It will be imperative to celebrate all grades as a measure of success in relation to individual growth from the beginning of the year to now. Teachers will then be able to provide boys and families with tailored feedback that will look to see boys continue further on the trajectory of individual growth.

Despite all other matches washed out, the Yellow B AFL team had a convincing win over St Pat’s last Saturday. Congratulations to the boys for getting involved in the cold and showing great sportsmanship.
We are looking forward to the final round before the holidays. Please remember there is no training in Week 9 during the last week of Term 2. Wishing everyone a safe and enjoyable holiday break. Training and Saturday fixtures resume Week 1 of Term 3 starting Tuesday, 23 July.

The past few weeks have been buzzing with activity in the 5 White classroom as our students delved into various fascinating subjects, showcasing their impressive learning and creativity.
Our English lessons have taken an exciting turn with the introduction of the captivating text FOX by Margaret Wilde. This engaging tale, rich with themes of friendship and betrayal, has sparked lively discussions and deep analysis amongst 5 White students. The students have enjoyed dissecting the story, exploring the visual and literary techniques used by the author and illustrator to captivate the audience.
In History, the excitement reached new heights as students eagerly prepared for and hosted the History Showcase last week. This event was a fantastic opportunity for the students to present their newfound knowledge about significant figures and events that contributed to the colonisation of Australia. From engaging stories to creative displays, the students’ hard work and enthusiasm were evident, making the showcase a memorable event for everyone involved.
In Science, the 5 White students have been learning how to design and build circuits using copper tape, light bulbs, and coin batteries. This hands-on project has been both educational and exciting, as students apply their knowledge to create circuits that light up their vivid artwork.
I am so proud of how these young gentlemen have been applying themselves to their schooling in Term 2!

As a principal, parent and history teacher, I was most impressed with our Year 6 History showcase this week. The detailed stories, journeys and experiences of parents, grandparents and other relatives that the boys shared was very impressive and I am sure they took a lot out of this deep learning experience. Thank you for supporting your sons with their history presentations.
I look forward to seeing Year 10 and their parents at next Tuesday’s Subject Selection Evening which is an important evening designed to assist students in choosing the correct subjects and pathway for their senior years at the College.
Our Faith In Action Week at Waverley College has been a time of celebration, reflection and opportunity for all staff and students. This week encompassed our College touchstones of Liberating Education, Gospel Spirituality, Solidarity and Justice and Inclusive Community. Each day presented aspects of social justice that we as a school can act upon as global citizens and exemplified the Year 12 motto for 2024 which is ‘stronger together, united as one’.
As part of our Faith in Action week, we welcomed special guests Robert Toia from the Rooster NRL Team, as well as Teki Tuipulotu, former Tongan International rugby player and coach. Our Pasifika students performed a traditional Haka and demonstrated the importance of diversity and inclusion at our college.
Our week of celebration was also a time for students to reflect on their own environment and included a challenge by the student-led SOTWEG group to promote the importance of respect and dignity towards each other and the space in which we share at Waverley College.
The social justice focus of this week also enabled our guest Brendan from Wheel Chair Sports to showcase his skills and challenge students in new areas of physical activity. Students from Physical Activity & Sports Studies (PASS) classes and our senior boys were invited to partake in the activity and inspire teamwork and cooperation between each other.
As part of the week of celebration, students and teachers were also asked to reflect on the journey of others and gain a greater understanding of refugee week and what it means to be a displaced person in our world today. Special guest, Ismail Ibrahim, a refugee who was born in Somalia presented his story to the College, demonstrating his resilience and strength throughout the obstacles he faced.
Our Faith in Action initiative supports the Edmund Rice ethos and aims to strengthen our resolve in living out the gospel values and enhancing our ability to live with integrity and faith to help others.
We are looking forward to welcoming our new Year 8 recruits to the Cadet Unit in Term 3.
A reminder to all parents/carers that this weekend is the Recruit Uniform Issue Weekend and 10-minute appointments are available to book for Saturday, 22 June and Sunday, 23 June at by clicking here.
