With over 28 years of experience as a player and coach, Shane Heal brings unparalleled expertise and passion for mentoring young athletes, helping them build the skills, confidence, and resilience needed to succeed on and off the court.
About Shane Heal
Shane understands the journey of young basketballers. He too once dreamed of playing for Australia, persevering despite being told he was “too small” to make it. Through dedication, technique, and a relentless work ethic, he went on to play in Olympic finals, NBA playoffs, and led teams as both a captain and coach.
Session Details
Each team will join Shane for a 75-minute skills session focused on technique, mindset, and building toughness to perform under pressure.

Last Saturday, the Class of 2009 gathered for a long-awaited reunion, and it was a night to remember!
Former classmates came together on the College rooftop to share memories, relive school days, and catch up on each other’s journeys since graduation.
Thank you to everyone who attended and helped make this reunion a success! We look forward to welcoming back more alumni as we continue to celebrate our school’s legacy and the wonderful community of students who have been part of it.

Today is the last day of HSC ATAR exams for our Year 12s.
Each day for the past four weeks, they have attended both morning and afternoon examinations for their respective subjects. We wish them all the very best as they now wait for their results and take the opportunity for a well-earned break, and perhaps a Christmas holiday job before starting their courses next year.
We also wish those who have started apprenticeships all the best as they learn new practical and business skills in their respective fields.
Congratulations to Archie Godby (Year 12), who attended the NSW Constitutional Convention at Parliament House, NSW this Tuesday.
Archie represented the college exceptionally well and was also chosen as one of 30 students to represent NSW at the national convention in Canberra in 2025. This is a tremendous achievement.
Congratulations to Will Anstis (Year 10) on receiving the Senior category award for Highly Commended – for his portrait photograph “Watching Over Me”.
The works are on exhibition at the Woollahra Gallery at Redleaf until Sunday, 10 November and I encourage you and your family to visit.

2024 Ecology Symposium
Congratulations to Dr Barry Smith on being awarded a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Newcastle’s School of Education. In summarising Dr Smith’s work, the University wrote the following;
“Dear Dr Smith, I am delighted to advise that on 23 October 2024 you were admitted to the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the School of Education, College of Human and Social Futures. The dedication and commitment required to complete a higher degree by research is highly significant and is a testament to your research skills and ability to generate original knowledge and understanding in your chosen discipline. The University of Newcastle values greatly the contribution you have made to its research culture and warmly congratulates you on your achievement.”
Dr Barry Smith (History) joins an esteemed group of Waverley staff with Doctorates: Dr Michael Couani (English), Dr Ed Davis (Religion), Dr Panayotis Diamadis (History), Dr Andrey Tregubov (Science), Dr Jonathan Walker (Science), Dr Vanessa Witton (Marketing & Development).
I am pleased to announce that Ms Beverley McCarthy has been awarded the Edmund Rice Education Australia (EREA) Charter Leadership Award for 2024 in Liberating Education.
This award honours her dedicated service and commitment to educating young people within our school community.
There are 55 EREA schools across Australia with nominations coming from each school across each of the four EREA touchstones.
Congratulations to Dr Panayotis Diamadis who recently presented at the History Teachers Association Annual Conference on The Anzac Legacy in the Eastern Mediterranean, and discussed Australia’s relief efforts during the Armenian, Assyrian, and Greek genocides in the Ottoman Empire.
I had the pleasure of sharing Mass in the College Chapel, College Assembly and Lunch with approximately 60 Old boys from across the years, with a special focus on the 1974 Old Boys who celebrated their 50 years since completing their studies at the College.
Thank you to Mr Richard Jarvis (Class of 1974) who was the representative of his class and addressed the audience.
Richard was one of four brothers who attended Waverley and all ended up in quite different career pathways which included a professor (Wal), a teacher (Paul), a builder (Michael) and a scientist (Richard).
Richard spoke about his father’s love of photography which captured so many wonderful Waverley memories, how he was inspired by his teachers to develop a strong interest in learning and Science, and the ever-evolving and enduring friendships that started at Waverley.
Foundation Manager Mr Billy Nicolas, Social Justice Coordinator Cath Lipman, and myself were honoured to be invited by the Class of 1964 to join them in celebrating their 60-year reunion at Easts Bondi Junction.
It was a pleasure connecting with our esteemed alumni, hearing stories of their time at Waverley College, and witnessing the powerful bonds that remain strong even after six decades.
You may recognise some of the speakers for the day that were part of this cohort: Sir Peter Cosgrove, the Honourable Peter Collins, Mr Peter Frost (Teacher at Waverley 50+ years) and Dr Sam Lackey (Mining and Infrastructure Investment Consultant)
Ms Cath Lipman, the latest recipient of the Percy Watson Teaching Excellence Fund, was present to accept an extraordinary gift on behalf of our teaching staff.
The Class of 1964, together with a very generous anonymous donor, presented us with a donation exceeding $28,000 for the Percy Watson Teaching Excellence Fund. This fund plays a vital role in supporting our teachers as they strive for excellence, ensuring they are well-prepared to guide our young students toward a bright future.
On behalf of the Waverley College Foundation, we extend our deepest appreciation to the Class of 1964 for this impactful contribution.

As we approach the end of the school year, we would like to remind students and parents of the procedures in place for students who need to leave the college early due to illness or injury.
If a student is feeling unwell, sick, or has sustained an injury, they must first report to the Health Centre. Our team of dedicated Registered Nurses will conduct a thorough assessment of the student’s condition.
Based on this assessment, we will determine the appropriate course of action, which may include on-site treatment, notifying parents for collection, arranging further medical attention, or referring the student to a GP or allied health professional.
As part of our duty of care, we also need to be aware of a student’s whereabouts and their mode of transport if they are leaving the school.
To clarify, students should not contact their parents directly via mobile phone or laptop to request collection.
All students must first report to the Health Centre, where the Registered Nurse will take the necessary steps to ensure the student’s wellbeing and communicate with parents as needed.
We appreciate your cooperation in ensuring the safety and health of all students.
On behalf of the Parents Association, I am delighted to recognise Kirsten Hott as recipient of the Parent Impact Award 2024.
Kirsten was nominated for her tireless effort and support to the Waverley College community over many years.
Kirsten has been a stalwart volunteer in the second-hand uniform shop taking up a more formal role as Convener of the second-hand clothing pool.
She has dedicated her time to the effective management of the clothing pool serving parents, streamlining & improving processes and recently reinstating the Legacy Fund, ensuring funds raised are given back to the school community supporting those in need.
Kirsten has also coordinated the donation of uniforms for Fiji immersions giving uniforms new life and purpose while reducing waste.
She goes above and beyond in her commitment to the school community and is a worthy recipient of the Parent Impact Award.

Cillian Stankard, Charles Draper, Jack Gibson and Alex O’Brien were selected to represent the Junior School at the inaugural Ecology Symposium.
The symposium featured a variety of speakers and presenters, including Uncle Dean Kelly, a respected Aboriginal Elder who has a strong connection to Waverley College, Mr Geoff Lui, Senior Project Officer – Indigenous Research at James Cook University, Ms Allegra Spender, Member of Parliament for Wentworth, Mr Costa Georgiadis, Australian author, landscape architect, environmental educator and television presenter, Dr Marjorie O’Neill, NSW Parliament Member for Coogee and Mr Sam McGuinness, Executive Manager, Sustainability, Waverley Council.
The overall takeaway message for the students was “You are the future of our planet. Keep learning, questioning, and advocating for a world that prioritises human and environmental sustainability.”

We are very proud to be a supporting contributor to HAMPERS OFHOPE 2024. HAMPERS OF HOPE, based in Addison Rd, Marrickville, is a charity program in its fifth consecutive year of providing help to those less fortunate.
We ask if families could please make a difference this Christmas season by donating a block of chocolate (eg 180 g Cadbury’s,Whittakers, etc) or a box of chocolates (eg Cadbury Rose’s, Lindt, etc) to donate to the hampers. Canned goods are also appreciated.
The collection of donations will occur from Monday 4 November – Friday 25 November.
Please place your donations in the collection box with the HAMPERS OF HOPE sign, located in reception.
Approximately 2000 hampers will be filled the week of 9 DECEMBER 2024 (from 8:30am –12noon) at Addison Road, Marrickville and will be distributed to a wide-reaching number of recipients including refugees, orphanages, domestic violence centres and flood/fire victims.
Your individual contribution really makes a difference to those in need and will certainly create a very festive hamper. Thank you for your generous support.
We look forward to the Junior School Music Festival next week on Thursday evening, 14 November 2024.
The event will showcase the Year 5 and Year 6 students’ abundant talent in creative arts. The performances will commence at 6pm and will finish by 7:15 pm.
The Festival will take place in the Performing Arts Centre Theatre located at the Senior School campus, 131 Birrell Street, Waverley. Parents/Carers and friends are welcome to attend. The event is non-ticketed. Please arrive early to find a seat.
All performers will need to be at the Performing Arts Centre by 5:30 pm. Boys will need to wear their academic uniform unless they have been allocated an outfit for a specific performance.
Our Music Supporters’ Group will be selling snacks and beverages from 5:15 pm in the PAC Foyer. Cash or EFTPOS available. Please email pac_supporters@waverley.nsw.edu.au if you are able to help with a donation of cakes, any assistance with service in the evening would be greatly appreciated.
Please note: The Waterford Concert Band rehearsal will be held this week at the Junior School in the Auditorium at 7.30 am on Thursday, 7 November. Please note: next week the band rehearsal will be held in the Performing Arts Centre Theatre at the senior campus, before school on Thursday morning 14 November at 7.30 am, following this students will be escorted to the junior school campus. As part of the Year 6 Graduation, we will be putting together a slideshow presentation. It would be appreciated if you could send through a photo of your son’s Kindergarten photo (or their first day of Kindergarten, or similar), as this will form part of the presentation. On Wednesday 6 November, MSP Photography will be coming in to take a whole group photo of the Year 6 cohort. Students will need to come to school dressed in academic uniform including their blazer. If they have training before school, they will need to ensure that they have their full academic uniform with them to change into after training.

We are proudly supporting CaringKids by donating the excess prizes earned from our Junior School FunRun. We are so proud of each boy for carefully choosing prizes to generously and selflessly donate to children who have the huge responsibility of caring for adults.
CaringKids is a registered charity that recognises the role of young carers and works to reduce their feelings of loneliness and social isolation, by sending them Toy Boxes packed with toys, games and books. Individuals, community and corporate groups collect and donate new toys, games, stationery, art and craft materials and sports equipment on their behalf. They use these to create the Toy Boxes that are delivered to young carers across Australia.

NO Home Learning Wednesday 13 November
We offer all students in Year 5 and Year 6 the opportunity to receive free additional support after school for the completion of home learning tasks. The afternoon sessions also provide a quiet, supervised study space for students who want to complete their assigned tasks.
Home Learning Club operates in the Learning Hub from 3:00 pm until 4:00 pm – Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays – during school term unless there is a scheduled Professional Development meeting and the club will be closed.

Only register his name once to allow other students the opportunity to attend. The session is limited to 20 spots. There will be a roll call to ensure attendance.
Students are required to stay for the full session unless there is a message in the student diary requesting early leave, a parent’s signature will be required.

Dylan Littlehales recently returned to share his inspiring journey and achievements during Part 2 of his Lunchtime Talk, where he showcased his Paralympic Silver Medal.
This event captivated students, who were eager to learn about his experiences and the significance of the medal itself. Dylan graciously allowed students to wear the medal, creating a memorable experience that highlighted the importance of perseverance and dedication in sports.

The students in 6 Gold have been experimenting with different ways to produce Stop Motion videos over the last few weeks. Using whiteboards, the students were asked to create a short story titled ‘The Obstacle’ to showcase what they have learnt.
In the second activity, a group task, the students were then asked to produce a film using the human body.
Some very interesting and creative stories have been developed. See examples of both of these activities below.
As part of their work in Geography, they have been busy working on a ‘Country & Person Study’ working on the Key Question, How do places, people and cultures differ between Australia and your chosen Asian country?
Students have the opportunity to present their work using a variety of mediums including documentaries, Google Slides, and some students creating their own websites. Although these are not quite finished, the students’ effort into their presentations is amazing.

A range of Manchester City Football Clinics are available over the summer holidays with clinics for both current students and our wider community!
Manchester City coaching clinics will give girls and boys in Years 3-6 the opportunity to develop their skills and learn how to play ‘Beautiful football’ in the playing style of Manchester City, utilising the football club’s coaching and playing methodology.
Players of all abilities will be challenged to develop in a safe, fun and authentic environment that reflects how Manchester City train and develop football players.
Players will learn how to master the ball, play with style, dominate the game and achieve their goals.
