There was much anticipation in the lead up to camp, as we were all hoping that COVID-19 wouldn’t cancel our plans once again. All the activities we experienced at Somerset were lots of fun, as well as being challenging. We learnt to be resilient and work as a team during the time we spent together.
We also had the opportunity to make new friendships, and got to know the other boys in our House better. We were very lucky to participate in a variety of activities including the wombat hole, crate stack, kayaking, swimming, giants ladder, bushwalking, high ropes, initiatives and base 7.
One of our favourite activities at camp was setting up the tents. We slept in the tents with a friend from our House. Who knew that the night sky away from the city could be so dark? This tested a few of us at first, but with all the activities during the day, it didn’t take long to get to sleep.
Cooking dinner and breakfast was great fun because we not only cooked for our friends, but the rest of our group as well. We enjoyed cooking and eating the sausages and pancakes. Cleaning the dishes wasn’t that bad either! It made us feel like we were growing into young men and starting to do what our parents do.
We’d like to acknowledge the students who couldn’t attend camp because of isolation, and we hope that you can join us next year. We’d also like to thank all the teachers who took time away from their own families to take good care of us, and also make the camp such good fun.

Our Year 11 Service Learning program endeavours to provide students with meaningful volunteer experiences and opportunities, where they are able to witness first-hand the transforming power of being able to make a difference to the lives of another individual in need.
Serving the community and Social Justice is at the heart of our College, and we are pleased to again offer this to our Year 11 students this year.
All Year 11 students are required to nominate two community volunteer placements. They attend in a volunteer capacity once per week over a three-week period. Students are reminded to check the conditions required for volunteers at their organisation prior to attending, such as registering online, wearing a face mask or being fully vaccinated.
If your son does not have a placement as yet, could you please remind him to add his name to any of the organisations below, on the ‘Year 11 Sign Up Community Service’ spreadsheet which he already has access to.

Waverley College, in partnership with Edmund Rice Camps Australia, has an opportunity for students in Year 11 to volunteer for the upcoming Edmund Rice Camps taking place in the April school holidays.
Edmund Rice Camps NSW is a not-for-profit organisation that supports children, young people and families, experiencing significant and complex disadvantage. Activities centre on building relationships, affirming peers, developing soft skills, and renewing confidence and self-worth.
The camps are led by amazing young volunteers who plan and deliver an empowering experience in a safe, fun and supportive environment. With a 1:1 ratio of children to volunteers, the intensive program provides an opportunity for enrichment to participants and volunteers alike.
There are two camps for the upcoming school holidays.
These programs fit either side of Easter, with the first week finishing on a Thursday, and the second beginning on the Tuesday after the Easter weekend.
To volunteer, students will need to attend a new volunteer training course on Saturday, 19 March, and must complete a new volunteer application form and a camp application form.

Annual Field Exercise (AFX – Cadet Camp) takes place in the last week of Term 1 at Majura Military Training Area in Canberra from Sunday, 3 April – Friday, 8 April, 2022.
The Joining Instruction for the AFX has been emailed to all parents and cadets. Please read this documentation before completing the below Google form, to register your son’s attendance on camp.

Last week was another hive of activity at Cadets.
B Company enjoyed an afternoon of Archery, C Company combined Laser Tag with a lesson on Methods of Movement, D Company were briefed on safety aspects of AFX, and A Company learnt how to cook a ration pack and how to keep clean without running water, when they weren’t scaling the heights of the Mobile Climbing Wall.
Next week, Friday 4 March, there are NO cadets for the Recruits nor Junior Rank due to the Swimming Carnival. Our staff and Senior Rank will take advantage of this time to have their AFX Briefing in preparation for camp.

Last week saw some great performances across a number of activities. Some of the highlights included our 1sts and 2nds Basketball both having great wins last Friday evening, and our 10As Touch Football winning all of their round robin matches against some high-quality opposition last Saturday. Our 7A Water Polo were also fantastic in their 13-3 victory against Cranbrook.
Well done also to Hirav Gandhi in the 1st XI Cricket side, who has been selected to represent CAS Cricket this Sunday.

We have also now concluded our winter activity change requests, and all students who have applied, will be notified this week of their selections. We will not be accepting any more requests, as we now have to organise staffing and training schedules, as well as notify opposition schools of our team numbers.
Any student who wishes to apply for a summer activity change for Term 4, will need to do so in the first three weeks of Term 3.
Next Friday, 4 March, we will be holding our annual House Swimming Carnival at Botany Aquatic Centre. This is a really important event for our House system, as well as a final opportunity for some of our swimming talent to prove themselves before the CAS Swimming and Diving championships on Thursday, 17 March.
There will be limited transport to the venue, however, all students are encouraged to make their own way to and from the venue, where possible. If there are any cancellations due to weather on the day, the wet weather line will be updated by 7am. If the carnival is cancelled, it will be a normal Friday Week B school day.
Unfortunately, we are unable to accommodate parent spectators at the venue.

With the wet weather this week, I also want to remind parents, carers and students of the wet weather processes.
The wet weather line (8250 3780) will be updated throughout the day on a Saturday, however, the Waverley College app is the recommended source for these changes, because push notifications will be sent as soon as changes/cancellations occur.

The College is delighted to announce that the Batting Club has returned for the rest of the summer sport season, catering to teams in Years 8 and 9. The Batting Club is an optional session for players looking to develop their batting skills.
The first of these sessions was held last Wednesday morning, where many of the College’s aspiring young cricketers took part in various technical drills designed by Pro Performance Cricket Senior Coach, David Dawson. David is a former Tasmania and New South Wales representative whose knowledge and experience is invaluable.
Batting Club will be provided to the Years 8 and 9 players every Wednesday morning until the end of the season. However, it is the College’s intention to provide this session for students in Year 7 and Year 10, once there is more clarity surrounding COVID-19 safety at schools. Please check the Waverley app for notices regarding this.
Last weekend, Waverley College faced a determined and highly skilled Cranbrook school in round two of the CAS competition. Although it was not the most successful day in terms of competition points, it was especially enjoyable to witness many laughs and cheers across the Queens Park pitches.
Year 10A
In the Year 10A match, Hunter Elridge struck again to take another three wickets for the second time in two weekends. Hunter’s ability to seam the ball accurately has been troubling many opposition batsmen, and this resulted in a pinpointed top of off stump first wicket. Unfortunately, the Year 10A simply ran out of overs and couldn’t chase down Cranbrook’s 7/143.
Year 9A
Unsurprisingly, the Year 9A team was successful yet again. Benjamin Van Dam was the most agile in the field, taking an incredible four catches. This aided Toby McDonald’s outstanding 5/7 off just under five overs. Well done, Toby!
Other Notable Performances
Other notable performances across the day were Fred Robertson’s 42 and Cruz Cooke’s hard-fought 61. Both players have deserved this great result, and it is a reflection of their hard work and love of cricket. Moreover, well done to the entire Year 7B team, which recorded Waverley’s second win for the day.
Although not every team won on the weekend, it is important that as a cricket community we ensure we remain focused on boosting enjoyment and developing player skills. These objectives have been a priority for myself and the coaches over the recent season.
Therefore, I am tremendously grateful for the ongoing contribution of coaches, players and parents, in supporting the College’s cricket program in its endeavour for future success.
This weekend Waverley faces Trinity Grammar, with the 1st XI playing away and the 2nd XI at Queens Park. Good luck to all teams!

On Friday, the 1sts faced off in a thriller that became a 20-point win by Waverley, led by Marko Rangan (39 points), Cameron Abbott and Daniel Palacio, with the final score being 65–85.
Cranbrook had a roaring crowd that the Waverley players were able to overcome. In the first quarter, the game was tight, with Waverley having a two-point lead at the end. By the end of the second quarter, the students had secured a 15-point lead. The game flew away from there, with Waverley in charge of the game until the end.
Next Friday, the 1sts are hoping to secure their second win of the CAS season, against an always competitive Trinity outfit.
On Friday, the 2nds also recorded a victory, after coming back from a 16-point deficit, led by Toby Longmire, Jake Mckell and Cooper Stynes.
Apart from the opening minutes, where Waverley jumped out to a seven-point lead, Cranbrook led the entire game, until the final minutes of the fourth quarter, where the Waverley players’ desire to win was greater.
Charlie Smith scored the go-ahead bucket in the final 30 seconds. With the end score being 54-50, the 2nds are so far going strong in their CAS season, and are hoping to notch up their third win against Trinity on Friday.
The rest of our elite junior teams did not fare so well, with the 10As losing by seven points, with the final score being 31–38. Standout players were Tashi Harrison, Aren Yaghoubian and Hudson Hatchett.
The 9As also fell short with the end score being 38–58, the star players being Joseph Dametto, Benjamin Pignatelli and Tamen Peralta.
The 8As unfortunately lost, the final score being 30–38, with great games from Tane Barclay, Petros Kalpouzanis and Jonte Garvey.
Congratulations to the 7As, who won with a score of 30–19 off the back of a great team effort.
Other teams that were victorious included: 10B (54-30), 10C (43-30), 10D (34-31), 10G (42-12), 9H (24-11), 8B (36-16), 8G (24-17), 8H (44-7), 7B (32-14), 7C (33-31), 7D (25-18), 7E (40-10), 7F (22-20), 7G (20-14) and 7H (48-6).

The dance will be conducted in association with St Clare’s College, and led by the Joan Carmody School of Dance.
