2021 Inaugural Piano Competition a Terrific Success!

A most appreciative audience of staff, parents and family members were treated to an afternoon of well-prepared and ably performed piano pieces at the Inaugural Waverley College Piano Competition on Wednesday, 19 May, 2021. In a heartening display of proficiency, students submitted themselves before adjudicator, Mr Evan Streater, who skilfully juggled critical listening, report writing, and then determination of places, as well as offering valuable and detailed remarks at the conclusion when prizes were awarded.

The standard of playing and general behaviour of the students throughout was exceedingly commendable, and ultimately made judging take a little longer due to the overall proximity of points distribution among entrants. We congratulate all contestants for a fine presentation of their work and feel encouraged by the standard of performance, with the success of this event likely establishing it as an annual fixture in the Music Department’s calendar.

Sincere thanks must be offered to Mr Evan Streater for his expertise in adjudicating; Head of Department Mr Chris Balkizas for approving and strategising the concept; PAC Coordinator Ms Keiran Kossenberg for her unwearied administrative assistance; faculty member Ms Jaz Dolso for her interest and work behind the camera; and for their attendance and obvious keen support, Mr Chris Blenkinsopp, Ms Michelle Rollins and Mr Thomas Mitton. Year 8 student Thomas Jackson-Whitlock is also to be recognised for his effort in very competently compèring proceedings.

BRAVO to all performers, and long may you admire the wonders of the piano and its repertoire!

After hosting last week’s Theatresports heats at the PAC, Waverley’s senior team made it into the semi-finals at St Andrew’s Cathedral School next Tuesday 1 June! The team consists of Dexter Craddock, Finn Nebauer, Aidan Rogers and Michael Richmond. They will be up against six other determined and talented teams on the night.

It would be great to see as many supporters turn up for the senior semi-finals at St Andrew’s Cathedral School as we can muster! Parents and friends who want to see the show can buy tickets at the door from 6.45pm on the night ($10 for adults, $5 for students). For the semi-finals, teams need to arrive between 5:30-6pm.

The Intermediate Team acquitted themselves very well in the heats last week at St Ignatius, but were edged out at the last minute. The Intermediate team consists of Evander Hudson, Cjuba Lord, Jay Palm, and Zachary Straker. Orlando Smithers-Haines, Perri Quirk and Achilles Zanapalis round out the squad as reserves.

Waverley is proud of all these dedicated and talented young performers. They should all be given a round of applause for their excellent efforts.

On Monday 10 May, Year 8 students were given a theatrical treat as the internationally renowned company, Zeal Theatre, returned to our Performing Arts Centre with their new show, ‘Meltdown.’ The play is the company’s fiftieth original production and is aimed specifically at the issues affecting secondary school students and their families. ‘Meltdown’ deals with fear, depression, anxiety, stress and anger. With Zeal’s dynamic multi-character acting and blend of music, drama and comedy, the show is a powerful story for all high school students.

After the performance, students participated in workshops with the company. These highlighted the profound value of Drama for students. Students practised invaluable collaborative and creative skills – negotiation, listening, proposing ideas, compromising, evaluating and understanding how dramatic meaning is created on stage. The Drama incursion is one of several initiatives at Waverley College aimed at encouraging more students to choose Drama as an elective in their Year 9 studies. Thanks very much once again to Zeal for another great day at the theatre.

Last Friday, Year 12 PDHPE students traveled to the Sydney Academy of Sport at Narrabeen. The focus of the day was to refine students’ understanding of content undertaken in the PDHPE syllabus for Core 2 ‘Factors Affecting Performance’ and the Option ‘Sports Medicine’. The students gained valuable insights into many facets of exercise science, physiology, training principles as well as experiencing the life of an elite professional athlete.

Students volunteered to undertake VO2max testing and lactate analysis. Surrounded by a team of exercise physiologists, the students undertook a 30-minute incremental test on a treadmill, pausing briefly every two minutes for lactate analysis via a blood sample taken from the ear and an RPE (rating of perceived exertion) score. Both students ran to exhaustion and provided the rest of the group with some excellent data for discussion later in the afternoon.

Over lunch, students were also able to observe a resistance training session undertaken by the Manly Sea Eagles NRL team. Students were put through a number of different forms of ‘Recovery Strategies’ including hydrotherapy, cryotherapy, ice baths and pool rehabilitation.

Special thanks to the exercise scientists at the Sydney Academy of Sport who gave up their time and expertise to provide lectures and conduct a range of tests on Waverley students, as well as Ms Gair for assisting in the organisation of the excursion.

Congratulations to our Junior and Senior school entrants in the 2021 Waverley Youth Art Prize.

The Waverley Youth Art Prize encourages creativity in young artists from across Sydney. It is open to anyone aged between 9 – 18 years old who is living, studying or playing in Sydney’s East. All artworks are hung so that future artists get to experience the joy of exhibiting and see an audience appreciate their work. Young artists also go in the running to receive encouragement awards including art packs and vouchers to attend classes at local institutions such as the National Art School.

The Waverley Youth Art Prize responds to a different theme each year. In 2021 the theme is, ‘We are Family – Ancestors, Bloodlines and Belonging.’ Our students created diverse artworks that took on ‘We are Family’ in a deep and meaningful way. Congratulations and good luck in the competition.

Waverley College Vs Oakhill College

Last weekend, Waverley College enjoyed a highly competitive fixture against Oakhill College. Oakhill fielded many talented teams who really challenged our representatives. This was an ideal match moving in to the CAS Competition. We thank Oakhill for hosting the fixture at Castle Hill and we wish them all the best in the ISA Competition.

Match Reports

Thank you to Jordan Du Toit (13Fs) for his match report this week. Any interested students are welcome to email their reports through to Mr McCoy at E: jmccoy@waverley.nsw.edu.au

13Fs Match Report by Student Journalist Jordan Du Toit

The Waverley College 13Fs played the Newington 13Ds. It was a tough game and you would’ve enjoyed watching it. To start off Jude Shepherd (Captain) kicked off and a massive forward came running down the sideline, but Jordan du Toit and Conor Brough stopped him. Newington scored the first try, and the score was 5-0 Newington’s way. In the 10th minute we lost Jude Shepherd (back injury) for the rest of the first half.

As soon as we lost Jude, this fast kid ran past Fin Kelly and Hooper Negus and scored. We had the break when they were kicking for conversion and the coach had named Brooklyn Lagos captain because Jude was injured. Newington missed the conversion so it was 10-0. After Jordan kicked off, Newington got a penalty down at our end and managed to score again!!

At half time the score was 15-0 and Jude came back on. Our coach said to our team that the big guy kept on making breaks and he said the way to stop him is to tackle his legs. We had a much better game in the second half and Jude scored to make it 15-5, but unfortunately missed the conversion. After Newington kicked off, Louis Oxenham made a break and nearly scored, but lost the ball in the ruck.

Brooklyn Lagos was playing some special footy when he nearly scored, but the ref said “knock on” when he planted the ball down nicely. Our men Fin Mccarthy and Billy Lagos made up for it and made some good hits. The full-time whistle blew and we lost, but we knew we played well. At the end we shook hands with Newington and the coach announced the man of the match. It was Fin Mccarthy!!!! Up Waves!!!!!

Rugby Vs Knox Grammar – CAS Competition Round 1

This weekend the eagerly anticipated CAS Competition commences. Reflecting on the preseason matches, the CAS schools have certainly displayed form against the GPS and ISA schools. The 2021 competition looks like it will be a thriller!

To commence the season, Waverley College play against Knox Grammar School. Our 14s and 15s travel to Wahroonga to play at the Knox Grammar School playing fields. Our 13s, 16s and Opens finally get another game back at Queens Park. I know that all players will be excited about coming home!

We welcome all families and visitors to Queens Park for what should be a great day of rugby.

We do ask that players, parents and spectators do take note of the CAS Code of Conduct listed below:

CAS Code of Conduct

PLAYERS

In the event of a player, or athlete being sent-off during a CAS fixture, it is the responsibility of that boy’s Headmaster at his discretion to determine the penalty. It is generally understood among Headmasters, however, that the boy will serve at least one week’s suspension from participating in the CAS competition.
