Our annual May Procession is fast approaching and will occur this Sunday 2 May from 12pm to 1:30pm in the Centenary Quad here at Waverley College. Students will need to be in the Quadrangle by 11:30am. Due to COVID-19 restrictions there will be no afternoon tea following the Procession.

This wonderful celebration of our College founder Blessed Edmund Rice and Mary our Mother is a compulsory event for all students. As such, full school uniform including blazer should be worn.

Our Waverley College Old Boys and Parents are warmly welcome to attend and are encouraged to join in this very special celebration. Please bring your rosary beads and we look forward to sharing this special occasion with our community.

Welcome back to Term 2. I hope everyone had a relaxing and restorative Easter break. It has been lovely to see the students come back enthusiastic and ready to learn.

I spoke to the students this week about the importance of wearing their uniform with pride and how they are representing themselves and the school. Now we are in Term 2, all students are required to wear their blazer to and from school. The students looked extremely smart turning up on their first day with their Winter school uniform. Can I please remind you that students should have their hair at an appropriate length, style and no shorter than a number two. You can refer to page 25 in the school diary if you are unsure. Can all inappropriate haircuts be rectified by Friday please.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, we realise that last term there were limited interactions with parents on campus. With restrictions easing, I am currently putting together a timetable that will invite you to visit your son’s classroom and see what they have been learning this term. More information to follow in next week’s Nurrunga.

Volunteering in the Junior School Canteen

The shift time is: Monday to Friday

We would be delighted to have you volunteer and would appreciate the support. As a huge thankyou for your continued support. Lunch is on us!

Sacrament of Confirmation Registration by Friday 30 April

For parents seeking information regarding the Sacrament of Confirmation, it is important that you contact your local parish to find out the details regarding when the Sacrament will be celebrated and when the preparation classes will be held.

For students of Waverley College who are part of St Charles Borromeo Parish (Mary Immaculate Church), the Sacrament of Confirmation will be celebrated on Sunday 20 June.  Compulsory preparation classes will be held in the weeks prior to the celebration.

Due to COVID-19, the Sacrament was postponed in 2020, therefore in 2021 we are only celebrating the Sacrament with current Year 6 and Year 7 students.  Please rest assured that the Sacrament will be held again next year to accommodate any Year 5 2021 students.

If you are looking to have your son enrolled in the Confirmation program for 2021, please contact Mr Stephen Ghattas at sghattas@waverley.nsw.edu.au for the necessary information. Due date for registration is Friday 30 April. For parents who have already received the registration form via Google Forms, it is important that these are filled out if you are wanting to have your son enrolled. This includes those parents who enrolled their sons to receive the Sacrament in 2020.

Junior School Mother’s Day Mass – Friday 7 May

You are formally invited to our Junior School Mother’s Day Mass on Friday 7 May 2021 at Mary Immaculate Church.

Unfortunately, we are still restricted by COVID-19 regulations, therefore we cannot hold a combined Year 5 and Year 6 Mass. Friday 7 May Mass Times:

If you have a son in both Years 5 and Year 6, we ask that you please attend the 12pm Mass.

As part of the celebration, there is a slideshow presentation showcasing our mothers/grandmothers with their son(s).  If you would like to send a photo through, please email it by Friday 30 April (Week 2) to liturgy@waverley.nsw.edu.au

The NSW Health School Vaccination Team are due to attend Waverley College on Tuesday, 4 May 2021. They will be vaccinating Year 10 students against four strains of Meningococcal (ACWY).

The vaccination consent forms will be distributed to all Year 10 students this week during the Wellbeing time by their Heads of House. Please ensure that parents read and sign the form which gives written consent for your child to have the vaccination.

Once it has been signed, your son must return it to one of the College registered nurses in the Health Centre between 8-4pm, Monday to Friday. Please note that if your son does not return the consent form he cannot be vaccinated. Consent forms can not be returned by email, the hard copy must be submitted.

Year 7 students were vaccinated against Diphtheria, Tetanus and Pertussis (Whooping Cough) and Human Papillomavirus (HPV) at the end of Term 1, 2021. We had a fantastic uptake of students who were vaccinated this year, which contributes towards good health, wellbeing and herd immunity.

If any Year 7 students missed out on their vaccinations, please contact the Registered Nurse in the Health Centre so we can arrange a catch up dose at the next visit. This next visit from Public Health is scheduled for 4 May 2021 when the Year 10 students are vaccinated against Meningococcal ACWY.

Should parents or guardians have any further questions about the vaccination program please do not hesitate to contact the College nurse on 9369 0644 or email: healthcentre@waverley.nsw.edu.au

One of the most significant opportunities for a Cadet Unit to support their local community is on ANZAC Day. Across the Nation, 230 Cadet Units will be sending cadets to assist in Dawn Services, Council Commemorations and RSL and school events. The Waverley College Cadet Unit is no exception and on Sunday, our Catafalque Party, Flag Orderlies and the SUO, CUO Mark Gaponov, will be assisting Waverley Council and Bondi RSL in their ANZAC Day Service at the Waverley Park Cenotaph.

To be a member of the Catafalque Party is such an honour. The Catafalque represents a coffin and the four guards, standing at the four points of the compass, protect the lost lives of those defending our country. What a privilege for our young men and women. We thank CUO James Privett, WO2 Hugo Defina-Sperando, WO2 Darcy Ferguson and WO2 Zachary Straker for assuming this important responsibility. They will be assisted by Flag Orderlies proudly representing Allied Countries: CUO Bryn Parry, CUO Hayden Walker, WO2 Charles Alexander, WO2 Daniel Di Francesco, WO2 Brandon Reid, WO2 Sophia Voigt, WO2 Alison Zaczek, SGT Sachiel Bass and SGT Owen Punch.

On Monday 26 April, Waverley College will commemorate ANZAC Day in a special whole school assembly, where students and cadets will mark this solemn occasion with a Liturgy and Parade. Selected members of the Cadet Unit will rehearse for this event on Friday 23 April.

The Cadet Unit, as a whole, will come back together on Friday 30 April. We are so excited to welcome back so many of our recruits – who are now officially cadets, having graduated from their induction year. These young men and women have been able to see past the impact of COVID and embrace AFX wholeheartedly. They have been able to put into context the training of Friday afternoons, the importance of Section Commanders and Platoon Sergeants, and they have recognised that their contribution to the Unit matters. These cadets are our leaders of the future, and we are so privileged to be with them at the beginning of their journey.
