National Centre for Childhood Grief Workshop

Two of our College Psychologists, Ms Dawn Young and Ms Samantha Jessen, attended a workshop last week run by Catholic Schools NSW and the National Centre for Childhood Grief (NCCG) about grief in the school setting. Unfortunately, our school community is not immune from the impact of grief, and we have continued to hear about and support those going through significant loss.

The experience of grief is one that all of us will go through at some stage in our lives. Despite this however, grief is rarely spoken about effectively, and a lot of us won’t know what to say when we learn that someone close to us has suffered a great loss. At times, this means we might avoid talking about grief, and even avoid the bereaved person altogether, which can lead to feelings of isolation and loneliness.

If we ourselves are impacted by grief, our study/work, socialisation, physical and of course mental health can all be significantly impacted. This workshop has been a timely reminder to bring to your awareness the services offered here at Waverley College and in the wider community.

It is very important that each Waverley College student seeks support when they experience grief and loss; the College community is here to provide support in the best way we can. We encourage students to reach out if their family is going through a difficult time. We are here to offer support which may look like a chat with our College Psychologists or simply organising a safe space where students can take a break throughout the day.

Within our community, the NCCG offers free counselling for bereaved children aged to 3-17 years old (face-to-face or Telehealth options). Access to the service is self-referred (no GP referral needed) by calling 1300 654 556. Additionally, Psychology services are available for students at Waverley College. Feel free to reach out to the Wellbeing Team or your Head of House for further information.

Bivouac

The Cadet Bivouac is an important event on the Cadet calendar and requires all members of the Unit to attend. This is the first chance our recruits have to put their Friday afternoons into context, and it gives our new rank the chance to put into practice their newly-honed leadership skills in the field.

Bivouac takes place from 1:35pm Friday, 25 August – 4:30pm Sunday, 27 August 2023 at St Mary’s Towers, Douglas Park, and is a published event in the College calendar.

Please review the Joining Instruction emailed to all families on 25 July 2023. To ensure the best care for your son on this camp, it is vital that we have the most up-to-date contact information and medical and special dietary requirements on the Google Form below.

Some of the adversity and injuries these teams have overcome is a testament to the coaches’ as well as the players’ resilience and belief when others had ‘written us off’, which makes these premierships that much more impressive.

We will recognise all of our award winners at the Presentation Nights over the next two weeks, as well as at our Winter Awards Assembly on Thursday, 24 August 2023.

Track & Field Season and Locating the Season Guide

We have now commenced the Track & Field season and all students are welcome to be a part of Athletics.

You can view the Season Guide by clicking the button at the top of this article, which will take you to its location on the College website. It has also been posted on the Waverley College App.

This Saturday, the full squad have training at Queens Park, 9am-11am.

Best of luck and congratulations in advance to everybody taking part in the City2Surf this Sunday. Our College team is over 130-people strong and has raised upwards of $8,000 for ‘Running for Premature Babies.’

The City2Surf is an iconic fun run and it is amazing that our College is so well represented in it. 14km is a huge challenge and I would like remind the team: no matter how you get there – don’t forget to enjoy the journey!
