Students in Year 12 Marine Studies put their fishing skills to the test, casting a line at Parsley Bay and Rose Bay this week. This takes the theory coursework beyond the classroom, as students have developed their understanding of fish size and bag limits, knot tying, rod and reel maintenance, recreational fishing techniques and fish stock conservation strategies in Australia.
There were a few fish biting on our second day of fishing, with Tom Kenny catching and releasing a beautiful box fish, and Gabriel Woodward catching, not one but two trevally, unfortunately too small to keep.
We are hoping on our next fishing trip to La Perouse, we will reel in a fish big enough for us to keep and cook up on the barbeques at school!

On Sunday, we farewelled our graduating Year 12 Cadets, as they concluded their five years of service to the Unit at the Annual Passing Out Parade and Awards Ceremony. We were blessed with good weather, and many parents and friends came to see the Unit looking resplendent in their DPCU before the Reviewing Officer, LTCOL Delaney of NSW 2nd Brigade.
Ably commanded by the SUO, Zachary Straker, our cadets performed magnificently, demonstrating their respect for tradition, for the Cadet Unit, and for our Senior Ranks and their leadership over the past difficult years of isolation.
One of the benefits of the Cadet program is to develop tenacity and fortitude in times of hardship, but it was still amazing to see CPL Deuchar Dezarnaulds find the strength to receive his award from LTCOL Delaney, having just recovered from surgery on Sunday. Well done, Deuchar!
Congratulations to all our prize winners for their dedication and commitment to the Unit over the past year:

Students in Year 8 have been using the Writer’s Toolbox Sentence Train game to develop their skills in sentence structure and written expression. Through modelled instruction, students have been able to explore the different ways grammar, punctuation and syntax create clear and focused ideas in their writing.
Many thanks to Literacy Coordinator, Mr Robert Tall, for providing us with these interactive activities.
In combination with these literacy activities, my Year 8 students have been learning about Shakespeare’s famous tragedy, King Lear. In supporting student understanding through drama, students have created tableaus of the play’s famous opening scene, where King Lear divides his kingdom amongst his three daughters, Goneril, Regan and Cordelia.

On Wednesday afternoon, Waverley debaters from Years 7 – 12 competed in the final round of CSDA (Catholic Schools’ Debating Association) against Champagnat. In an impressive feat, Waverley came away with the win in all year groups — a fantastic way to end the competition.
The adjudicators commended our students on the strength of their arguments and rebuttals, as well as the skill with which these were articulated. The coaches would like to congratulate all students involved, and thank them for their decorum and sophistication this term.
Thanks also to the students who volunteered their time to help chair the debates — Alejandro Zanapalis, Brandon Reid, Ricardo Zanapalis — and those who supported our teams in the audience.
We look forward to resuming competition next term, whilst also celebrating such a strong end to CSDA.
Waverley is so proud of each and every one of our debaters, and their commitment to Debating, week in, week out. We too, celebrate your brilliant achievement!

Please find below the schedule for the Year 12 Tutorials in Term 2, Week 8. Topics covered during the tutorials include content revision, study skills, exam preparation and practice papers. These tutorials have proven extremely valuable and, while not compulsory, are strongly encouraged.
It is important that we know attendance numbers so teachers can prepare accordingly. To that end, the expectation is that students who register for the tutorial, attend. Rolls will be taken to assist us to manage the program. The cut-off time to register for morning tutorials is 3pm the day prior.
Mrs Lauren Ryan has emailed the registration sheet to students to register their attendance at the tutorials.

The Year 10 Subject Selection Information Evening is scheduled for the evening of Tuesday, 21 June in the Waverley College Gymnasium from 6pm – 8pm. This is a compulsory event for all Year 10 students and parents and carers.
The evening will provide an overview of the Stage 6 Subject Selection process and offer students the opportunity to learn more about the courses in which they have an interest.
To this end, the evening will be structured as follows:
>>> Click here to view the Kenny Classrooms Venues.
This information should be considered along with the information provided via:
>>> Click here to view the Subject Information Booklet Stage 6.
>>> Click here to view the Course Requirement Booklet.
>>> Click here to view the Waverley College Subject Selection Website.
These should be read in conjunction with all of the opportunities for discussion and advice available to each and every boy. They will also be posted in the following secure site with the Head of Department videos which will be released later this term.
Students will not be asked to submit their initial selections until early Term 3 after the Parent / Teacher Interviews.
The College uses an online system for the students to nominate their subject selections for Stage 6.
Students will receive an email with a link and a password to access the system in mid-June. Students should complete their subject selections online, print the confirmation, and submit this in hard copy form via the box outside the Executive Assistant to the Director of Curriculum’s office on Level 1 by Thursday, 28 July.

The Year 8 Subject Selection Information Evening is scheduled for the evening of Tuesday, 21 June in Kenny Classrooms as per the below schedule from 6pm-7pm.
>>> Click here to view the Kenny venues for the Subject Selection Information Evening.
As outlined a couple of weeks ago, in Years 9 and 10, apart from the mandatory subjects, the students study two additional subjects commonly referred to as electives. The evening will provide an opportunity for students to learn more about the electives in which they have an interest.
The information during this evening should be considered along with the booklet in the link below which outlines the pattern of study that the students undertake over Years 9 and 10, including the elective subjects available.
>>> Click here to view the Subject Selection Information Booklet Stage 5.
There is also a College Web Link below that offers further information on each course via a set of presentation slides.
>>> Click here to view the Subject Selection College Web Link.
The subject selection process will be completed online early next term. Details on how to do this process will be sent out closer to the time.
The most important thing is that the students are selecting elective subjects that they will enjoy. These are important decisions to make, as they will influence the staffing and resourcing decisions the College has to make for the 2023 timetable.

On Friday, 17 June, all Year 11 Marine Studies students will attend an excursion to the Sydney Fish Markets and the Sydney Aquarium.
Students will meet at the Sydney Fish Markets at 6:15am. Students will attend the fresh fish auction of the morning and have a behind-the-scenes tour of the Sydney Fish Market.
Following the Fish Market tour, students will then make their way to the Sydney Aquarium at Darling Harbour, for a tour starting at 10am.
The purpose of this tour is for students to become more familiar with the ‘Dangerous Marine Creatures’ that we have been studying this term.
Students will be dismissed from Darling Harbour at 2pm to make their own way home at the conclusion of the excursion.
Students must wear full academic winter school uniform.

Please find below some reminders about key events you need to be aware of for the Junior School in Term 2. For all of the College events, please refer to the College calendar.
Semester 1 Reports are now available via TASS Parent Lounge. This is an opportunity for you to go through the report with your son, and talk together about his strengths and areas of development. You may also like to develop questions from the report to discuss at Parent/Teacher/Student interviews.
A reminder that interviews will be held on Tuesday, 14 June. You received a Google Form from your son’s class teacher to indicate if you would zoom or face to face. Yesterday you also received a zoom code from IT. You will need this if you have chosen zoom.
Tuesday, 14 June is a pupil-free day for your son, however, he is required to attend this interview and be in his full academic school uniform. This will be a 15-minute time slot to allow you to discuss your son’s Semester 1 report, and ask any questions you may have about their progress here at Waverley.
If you are having any IT difficulties, please contact the IT Department on (02) 9369 0784 OR email iassist@waverley.nsw.edu.au – iAssist will provide cover from 7am to 5:45pm.

I wish all families a lovely and well-deserved extended long weekend without sport.
As a friendly reminder, we do not have any games scheduled this weekend, and our final round for Term 2 will be on Saturday, 18 June. The final Winter Co-Curricular season rounds will be played across the first three weekends of Term 3.
Please follow the link below to ensure you are up to date with any changes to fixtures for Round 7 (Saturday, 18 June), and keep a close eye on the Waverley College app for any further adjustments.
I personally would like to thank all of the parents who allowed their son to support any sports team that was struggling for numbers last weekend. I would especially like to thank the students for offering themselves to help teams who were unable to secure a full side, due to students being sick or playing at the OzTag tournament.
The Junior School was missing large numbers, and this had a ripple effect on all the U11 Rugby teams. However, you wouldn’t have known! The results demonstrated that regardless of this loss of numbers, our spirit, teamwork and camaraderie shone through.

Last week, the debaters had tough competition and a tough topic. Both Waverley teams put forward strong arguments and presented their cases clearly and firmly, rebutting the Coogee team’s cases. The boys did themselves and Waverley very proud. One win and one loss.

To celebrate National Reconciliation Week, 5 White engaged in many fun activities that taught us about the history and culture of Australia’s First Nations People. Our favourite lesson was Aboriginal Art Therapy.
We used watercolour paints and pastel crayons to create an art piece that reflected our feelings, thoughts and emotions in the moment. The joy of listening to music by Indigenous artist Scott Darlow, and moving to it freely while making marks on the paper, was therapeutic and mesmerising.
In this lesson, we were asked to choose an Indigenous Hero and conduct research about their upbringing, career, goals and achievements. Our chosen Indigenous Hero was Patty Mills. We then created an informative poster and shared our new learning with our peers.
