Please find below the schedule for the Year 12 Tutorials in Term 2, Week 4. Topics covered during the tutorials include content revision, study skills, exam preparation and practice papers. These tutorials have proven extremely valuable and, while not compulsory, are strongly encouraged.

It is important that we know attendance numbers, so that teachers can prepare accordingly. To that end, the expectation is that students who register for the tutorial, attend. Rolls will be taken to assist us to manage the program. Should numbers fall below five, we may not be able to run that particular session.

Mrs Lauren Ryan has emailed the registration sheet to students to register their attendance at the tutorials.

Week 3 of Winter Activities

Well done to all students, staff and coaches on a full round of winter activities last weekend.

Debating

Our Debating Teams performed very well at Loreto Kirribilli last Friday evening with some excellent arguments presented by all teams. Our Debating Teams are at home this Friday evening against our sister school St Clare’s College, and I am sure all students will be exceptionally courteous and respectful.

Tennis, AFL and Football

Our 1st IV Tennis also had a terrific win last weekend against Knox and are only getting better, as well as our 1sts AFL and 1sts Football also securing impressive victories.

Congratulations

Well done to Marko Rangan (Year 11) on his selection for NSWCIS Basketball this week.

Co-curricular Expectations

This week, we are home to local rivals Cranbrook in Football and Tennis, as well as the Shore School in Rugby. I would like to remind all member of the College community of some important points:

Winter Co-curricular Uniform

Winter Co-curricular Uniform

1st XI Football

Our 1st XI Football played their next round of the CIS Independent cup this week against Mamre Anglican School. Despite a great effort and with a number of players out sick and injured, the Waverley team were defeated 1-4. Well done to these boys, and the coaches, and we can now keep focusing on the CAS season ahead.

CIS Hockey and Rugby League

We also have a number of boys trialling this week for CIS Hockey and Rugby League. I want to wish these boys well, but also highlight that your schoolwork and assessments are the priority if there are any clashes.

Good luck to all teams this week!

On 29 April, Christian Kitas represented Waverley College at the illustrious public speaking competition: the Lawrence Campbell Oratory Competition. Held at Sydney Grammar, representatives from thirteen high schools were given fifteen minutes to prepare an eight-minute speech on an unseen topic.

The topics for 2022 were: “I have ever hated all nations, professions and communities, and all my love is toward individuals”, “Some praise at morning what they blame at night, but always think the last opinion right”, and the most popular of the evening, “There’s a crack, a crack in everything, that’s how the light gets in.”

Christian Kitas 2022 Lawrence Campbell Oratory Comp

Congratulations to Christian Kitas for his oratory skills and confidence

Arguably, the most difficult of the public speaking competitions for students, the adjudicators look for intelligence, humour, expression, relevance to topic, and elocution in the students’ speeches. Whilst not placing, Christian represented both himself and the College proudly. He spoke about key concerns many teenagers face today, including the pressures of social media and the need to look beyond the superficial.

Thank you to Miss Halpin for her organisation of the evening, and Miss Stephens for working with Christian to prepare for the competition. Congratulations to Christian for his oratory skills and confidence.

Early Improvements

On Saturday, 7 May, Waverley College progressed into the second round of the GPS/CAS/ISA trial Rugby fixtures against St Ignatius’ College, Riverview. It was pleasing to see the improvements throughout all age groups. Waverley managed to be successful in 18 matches out of the 22 played. I am sure this will really help start to bring teams together as they begin to be established.

Culture

Last week at the College Assembly, our School Captain, Daniel McSweeny, addressed the student body. In his address he spoke about culture and “how we do things around here” at Waverley College. A key point which Daniel touched on, was support.

This week, I would like to highlight the supportive efforts of two of our students: Lucius McFarlane and Angus Sundkvist. Unfortunately, our 15As side was hit with illnesses over the weekend, arriving at the Riverview grounds with 13 players. Lucius and Angus, who played in the 14As match earlier, put their hand up to help out the 15As side. All just to support their Waverley mates.

The efforts displayed here led to a victory to the 15As, 19 to 17. We congratulate Lucius and Angus for their incredible and supportive efforts last week.

Wet Weather

Unfortunately, wet weather hit us again this week, which forced Centennial Parklands to close the Queens Park Grounds. This has been a great shame on the back of the momentum that teams gained, from last weekend’s results. A reminder, however, that if training is cancelled in the afternoons, students do have access to the Waverley College Weights Room, where they can complete conditioning training under the guidance of Mr Jeremy Roff.

GPS/CAS/ISA Trial Fixture Vs Shore

This week, Waverley College will play Shore. Shore is a GPS school that has displayed improvements in their rugby program in recent years. All teams will need to be ready for this fixture, as it will certainly be a test for all age groups.

13s, 16s and Opens teams will play at Queens Park, while the 14s and 15s will be over the bridge at Shore. Players are reminded to check the Waverley app to confirm team selections for the week, as well as fixtures.

Thank you to our Helpers

We really appreciate and thank all those parents who generously provided time and energy to assist with the Canteen and BBQ at Queens Park. Last weekend, the weather was perfect, and the crowds were certainly back! We are so grateful to our parents and friends who played the role as hosts to our visitors, to make them all feel so welcome.

We have another big round of Rugby and Football this weekend, and would appreciate any offers of support – even if you are able to help with the Canteen for an hour, while your son warms up for his match.

Where Do I Sign Up to Help?

If any parents, carers and friends are free to assist at any stage this weekend (or throughout the season), please register your interests on the 2022 online roster.

>>> Click here to sign up to the online roster to help at the Canteen and BBQ at Queens Park.

Next weekend, our 14s and 15s finally get the chance to play on our home grounds at Queens Park. We are looking for parents from these age groups to assist with the canteen duties on this day. If you can help between 8am and 1pm, we would love you to sign up on the online roster above.

I look forward to seeing you on the sidelines this weekend!

WAVERLEY TO WIN!

Convenor of Rugby

Waverley is proud of its cross-curricular offerings. For many years now, the Geography and Religion departments join together, align their content, and undertake a stimulating day of exploration with Year 7 at Centennial Parklands. This edifies their understanding of ‘Water in the World’ and ‘Stewards of Creation.’

The weather may have been overcast, but spirits were high as Year 7 participated in a joint Year 7 Geography and Religion Excursion. Students learnt navigation skills, studied water quality, met ducks, wrote prayers, reflected and solidified friendships – all whilst trying to stay as dry as possible.

The weather was kind to us, even though the walk to and from the College drew some complaints such as “the hill is too steep!” All in all, a thoroughly enjoyable day. Thank you to our energetic teachers who gave up their time to be part of this cross-curricular event, and to our enthusiastic students for participating in the day.

Last Friday, our Senior Debate team competed against Loreto, Kirribilli in Round 1 of the 2022 CSDA competition.

They debated topics ranging from Australian politics on a local and federal level, to the role of television in an increasingly digitised world.

Each team presented their arguments and rebuttals with aptitude and poise and, I am thrilled to say, we came away with deserved wins in each of our 7 – 12 teams.

I congratulate all teams on their success, and look forward to Round 2.

Lockdown Habits Proving Difficult to Break – SchoolTV

There has been a noticeable shift in the amount of time people spend on screen-based devices. Families are transitioning back to pre-COVID routines, but many are still struggling to re-establish the boundaries and rules around screen use. Some continue to deal with digital conflict and ‘zombie-like’ children on a daily basis. The latest research found that 77% of teenagers spend more than five hours on screens per day, but it is important to note that not all screen time is considered equal.

Parents play a crucial role in modelling a positive and healthy approach to using screens, and assisting children to navigate the content they watch. It is better to model and mentor screen use, rather than monitor it. Children tend to do more of what they see us do, and less of what we tell them to do. However, it is still important to outline the risks and highlight the benefits of screen use, to ensure you keep a balanced attitude. Encourage discussions around the issues that people experience in monitoring their screen time, and be honest about your own difficulties.

Screen time SchoolTV

Parents need to remain firm in their approach to managing screen time. Excessive screen time can be detrimental to a child’s overall wellbeing. Ensuring the correct privacy settings are in place is vital to prevent children from being inadvertently exposed to inappropriate content or online predators. Parents need to also be mindful of the potential impact screen time can have on a child’s social, emotional, educational, behavioural, and even physical domains.

SchoolTV Can Help

In this edition of SchoolTV, parents and carers are provided with a range of guidelines and strategies to help manage screen time at home. We hope you take time to reflect on the information offered in this month’s edition, and we always welcome your feedback.

If you do have any concerns about the wellbeing of your child, please contact your son’s Head of House for further information, or seek medical or professional help.

RAT Discretionary Testing Underway

COVID-19 cases at the College remain relatively low during Week 3. Last week, the College distributed ten additional rapid antigen tests (RATs) to your son. In line with the Department of Education and NSW Health, we have moved from prescribed surveillance testing to what is termed ‘discretionary testing.’

We now require students to administer a rapid antigen test in the following circumstances:

Families are required to notify NSW Health and the College should their son receive a positive RAT or PCR test, and then isolate for seven days. Students should only return to school if they are free from cold and flu symptoms after the seven-day isolation period.

This week, both Brennan and O’Connor Houses celebrated their House Mass and Suppers. After two years of COVID-19 preventing our Waverley families from joining us, it was wonderful to see the chapel full of all our families.

A special thank you to all those who made these wonderful celebrations possible. Fr Bernie for celebrating the masses, our wonderful musicians Mr Balkizas and Ms Dolzo, the fabulous choirs from each of the Houses, our Prefects and of course our Heads of House, Ms Downey and Mr Barr for coordinating such wonderful celebrations.

Quinn House Mass is next Thursday, and we look forward to welcoming all our Quinn families then.
