The Cadet Bivouac (3-day Cadet Camp) is an important event in the school calendar and requires all members of the Cadet Unit to attend. This is the first chance our recruits have to put their Friday training into context, and it gives our new rank the chance to put into practice their newly-honed leadership skills in the field.
Bivouac takes place from 12pm Friday, 6 September – 4:30pm Sunday, 8 September 2024 at Cataract Activities Centre, Appin. Buses will transport all cadets to and from Bivouac.
Please review the Joining Instruction emailed to all families on 5 August 2024 and complete the necessary administration.
To ensure the best care for your son on this camp, it is vital that we have the most up-to-date contact information and medical and special dietary requirements on the Google Form below.

Thank you to all the families who have already completed the Google Form with these details.
The Commanding Officer’s Parade marks the beginning of our new recruits’ Cadet journey as they parade for the first time in their Cadet uniform. It is always a day of energy and excitement as our new rank command their sections, platoons and Companies for the first time.
For our recruits, learning how to wear the uniform with respect, learning simple drill movements and getting to know their fellow cadets takes time and our senior students and staff are here to help with this transition.
In four short weeks, we will take the whole Unit on their first Cadet Camp – Bivouac 2024 – and over the coming weeks, recruits will learn the art of constructing a weatherproof hutchie, how to cook a ration pack and how to look after themselves in the field without running water.
The Cadet Unit will be supporting local Legacy branches by selling badges and bears on Friday, 30 August to the local community. There will be cadets at Charing Cross and Bondi Junction before school, so please look out for them and support this worthy cause. Merchandise will also be available in the Staff Common Room. Cash only, I’m afraid, so please come prepared.

Bravo Company has started off the year with a bang.
The new recruits were introduced to their first drill lessons, learning commands such as ‘Attention’ and ‘At Ease’. They were also taught how to properly wear their uniforms.
The day ended on a fun note with a game of dodgeball. During this time, recruits met their Company Commanders, Sergeants, and Corporals, forming new friendships and gearing up for an exciting Cadet year ahead.

As there continues to be growing number of chickenpox cases in the Waverley community I urge all parents to monitor for signs and symptoms in their child.
Chickenpox begins with a sudden onset of slight fever, runny nose, feeling generally unwell and a skin rash.
The rash usually appears as small lumps that turn into blisters and then scabs, and appears over three to four days.
If you notice any of the above symptoms in your child we strongly encourage you seek medical attention. If you have any queries please don’t hesitate to contact the nursing staff at healthcentre@waverley.nsw.edu.au
This Winter period is particularly difficult for those members of our society experiencing homelessness. Waverley is having a Winter donation drive during Weeks 3, 4, 5 and 6 in August to support the Matthew Talbot Hostel.
Matthew Talbot Hostel is a wonderful organisation helping over 40,000 Sydney men each year in providing accommodation, health, counselling and employment assistance.
Waverley has had a long history of boys volunteering in its kiosk in Woolloomooloo. All boys from all Houses from Years 5-12 are encouraged to bring in toiletry and other essential items on the list below in order to be able to provide packs for the homeless and marginalised groups which the Matthew Talbot Hostel provides assistance for.
Matthew Talbot Winter Appeal – Donation item list:
Toiletry pack Items – small traveller size for items is best
Home Starter Kit Items: These are prepared and distributed to the men when they move out of the Hostel into more settled accommodation. New items are ideal, but used/clean items in good condition are also fine.
Clothing
Items desired as new, or very good condition:
Items required to be new:
All items can be brought to either the Senior School Wellbeing Centre or Junior school reception in weeks 3-6 between August 5-29.

Waverley College played Barker in a tough round of activities last weekend. There were some pleasing results as well as a last second heartbreaking loss in the 1st XV Rugby.
1st XV Waverley v Barker
We still have two more rounds of sport and Debating continuing for a few more weeks to complete their CAS rounds.
Students in Year 12 who commence their Trial HSC Examinations next week are still expected fulfil their final week of co-curricular commitments and we have a couple of key rounds against Knox and then Trinity to determine a number of premierships.
Well done to James Peate and his efforts in representing NSW and Waverley College at the National Public Speaking Championships in Hobart on the weekend. Whilst James did not secure the victory we are extremely proud of his performance and know he will give it another almighty shake next year.
Well done also to Roman Leilua and Charlie Grant on their selections over the weekend in the U16 Gen Blue Rugby squad. This is a high performance group and both of these students have demonstrated the commitments and aptitude required to be selected at this level.
We also have a handful of students competing this weekend at the National Pool Rescue Championships in Queensland. Best wishes to Jacob Roorda, Owen Roorda, and Ryan McNamara for their events.
A reminder to any student in Years 7-11 that if they wish to apply for a change in their summer activities, this needs to be completed by the end of next week. We are offering golf as a new activity and applicants will be assessed on their handicap and golfing experience for this new inter-school sport.
We also have a number of presentation evenings coming up and invite all members of the College community to come and share the celebrations of a successful winter season.

Cadets has been developing youth in resilience, citizenship and leadership at Waverley College since 1911. In order to support the Waverley College Strategic Plan in holistic education, we are extending this opportunity in 2025 to include Year 7 students, commencing the compulsory component of Cadets in Term 3 2025 until AFX (Cadet Camp) at the end of Term 1 2026.
This exciting initiative will enable greater opportunities in the development of character, professional relationships in a coeducational setting, and servant leadership as students from Waverley College and St Catherine’s School progress through the Waverley College Cadet Unit across a 5 year program.
Students currently in Year 6 2024 will participate in a special Cadet Orientation Afternoon with our senior cadets in Term 4 this year, where they will get a glimpse of this engaging outdoor education program. Once in Year 7, they will be issued with their uniform and equipment in Term 2 2025, ready to begin Cadets in Term 3 2025.
Students currently in Year 7 2024 will be given the opportunity to join the Cadet Unit in a voluntary accelerated Recruit Induction Program in Term 2 2025. This one-off opportunity is a great way to commence the program as part of this exciting new program and forge the way for a new Senior Recruit Company in Term 3 2025 where they will continue their training at an elevated level.
As we look to promote excellent citizenship across our schools, the Waverley College Cadet Unit is integral in fostering collaborative and respectful relationships, followship and leadership, in our students from the beginning of their secondary education.
We are looking forward to welcoming our recruits at their first parade, The Commanding Officer’s Parade, at 3.30pm on the Centenary Quad on Friday 2 August.
253 new recruits from Waverley College and St Catherine’s School are joining a collective and proud history that goes back to 1911.
Cadets is a unique co-educational outdoor activity that provides the opportunity for our young people to learn to work together and to develop healthy professional relationships commensurate with the real world, whilst maintaining the benefits of their single-sex education.
Cadets takes place on Friday afternoons from 3.30pm – 5.30pm, and cadets wear their Cadet Uniform to school on Fridays. This means:
Recruits are posted to a particular Company, Platoon and Section and stay with this group for the rest of the Cadet year, building strong relationships, not only with others in their year group and St Catherine’s, but with the rank from the years above. The Section Commanders send the Routine Orders (RO) from week to week, so recruits know to expect and what to bring. Training finishes each week at 5.30pm with a Company Dismissal.
Over the next three terms, recruits will learn the skills they need as a cadet and new aspects about themselves, culminating in the Annual Field Exercise (AFX) which doubles as the Year 9 Camp at the end of Term 1, 2025. Training this term prepares the Unit for the first Cadet Camp of the year – Bivouac 2024 at Cataract Scout Park from Friday 6 September – Sunday 8 September.
As with all co-curricular commitments, we have a duty of care for your son between 3.30pm and 5.30pm. In the event of illness or misadventure, please apply for leave by emailing cadets@waverley.nsw.edu.au no later than 12.00pm on the relevant Friday. A maximum of two Leave Applications is granted per semester at the discretion of the Commanding Officer.

Cadets involves many additional opportunities to develop leadership, skills and service. Expressions of Interest are now called for the following activities from cadets in Years 9 and above. Please email the Commanding Officer at cadets@waverley.nsw.edu.au to register your interest:

Welcome back to all students, parents and supporters for the final 3 rounds of winter activities. We have had a number of students and staff that have dedicated a lot of time over the 3 week break to continue to train and perform at high levels.
With the 2024 Paris Olympics commencing next week, Waverley is very proud to have 3 old boys competing and we will all be cheering these gentlemen on and hopefully they continue to inspire our current students:
Henry Paterson – 7’s Rugby
Noah Havard – Canoe Sprint
Charlie Negus – Water Polo
Our senior cadets also spent some time in their holidays training and completing their leadership courses and congratulations to the Waverley and St Catherine’s students on their appointments and we will recognise these students later this term.
Congratulations to Evan Rowbotham who notched up another win over 4km, this time at the NSW All Schools Cross Country Championships, held at The Sydney Equestrian Centre, Horsley Park.
Evan ran a very strategic race by sitting in with the leaders through 3km as they navigated various undulating grass/dirt surfaces. Evan finally made his winning move inside the last kilometre to pull away from a very high quality field to win in 12:05 (4km).
This win secured Evan a spot on the NSW team to compete at The Australian All Schools Cross Country Championships in Melbourne on August 21-23.
Congrats also to James Peate will be representing Waverley College and NSW at the National Public Speaking Rostrum finals this weekend and we all wish James well and hope to see another great result from Hobart.
We had a number of students representing NSW at the National Schools Rugby Championships over the holidays and a huge congratulations to Troy Patea on his selection for the Australian Schoolboys team in 2024. Troy will play in September against a Rugby Australia Academy team followed by a tour to Fiji. Congratulations also to Mr Oliver Knight who was manager of the NSW 2 team that won the championships.
Well done to James Gallo had a wonderful opportunity to attend an intensive water polo training camp in Crete, Greece followed by competing in the Habawaba Greece Youth tournament where his Kap7 Australia team won gold in the U14.
Congratulations James!
Thank you to the staff and students that also undertook the extra training and trial fixtures in the holidays for AFL, Football and Rugby.
Just a reminder that for any student in Years 7-11 who wishes to request a potential change to his summer activities that these requests need to be submitted by the end of week 3 of this term. Any changes will be based on availability in that activity. We are also introducing summer golf for 12 students across all year groups, however, we can only take 12 students and this will be based on the lowest handicap. any student wishing to change must collect the required form from the co-curricular office.
We have a big round this weekend against rivals Barker and I want to remind all members of the College community of the CAS Codes of Conduct. We will have our final round of winter activities (except for Debating) on Saturday August 10. We then move immediately into Track and Field and all students are invited to take part.
Over the school holiday break, 11 Waverley College students competed at the Sydney Interschool Snowsport Championships at Perisher from 16-19 July, 2024.
Congratulations to Patrick Palmer (Year 9), Dexter Francis (Year 8), Cooper Nicolls (Year 8), Rory Palmer (Year 7) and Archie Francis (Year 6) who have each qualified for and will represent the College at the NSW State Championships in various events to be held in Perisher from 19-23 August, 2024.
As a team, Waverley College won gold in the Snowboard GS event (Division 3 for boys in Year 7 & 8), with Dexter Francis placing 2nd overall and Cooper Nicols 9th.
Dexter Francis placed 4th overall in the Snowboard Cross event (Division 3 for boys in Year 7 & 8).
As a team, Waverley College won bronze in the Skier Cross event (Division 3 for boys in Year 7 & 8), with Rory Palmer placing 5th and Dexter Francis 16th.
Rory Palmer placed 1st in the Moguls Qualifier for Division 3 (boys in Year 7 & 8) and Archie Francis placed 2nd for Division 4 (boys in Year 5 & 6).
Rory Palmer finished 13th in Alpine in Division 3 (boys in Year 7 & 8).
Patrick Palmer placed 6th in Skier X and 7th in Alpine in Division 2 for (boys in Year 9 & 10), and finished 1st place in his division at the Thredbo Rider Cross event on Sunday 21 July, 2024 and 4th overall in the Men’s Open Division.
Archie Francis placed 10th in the Snowboard GS event and 11th in the Snowboard GS event for Division 4 (boys in Year 5 & 6).
Congratulations also to Rory Muldowney (Year 9), Cooper Firth (Year 7), Connor Moran (Year 6), Tadhg O’Sullivan (Year 6), Zac Arms (Year 6) and Joe Roy (Year 6) for their highly commendable races throughout the championships.

This year Waverley Rugby has aligned itself with two charities and businesses to help support its ‘Rugby for Good campaign’.
This campaign will serve to raise money and awareness for charities working in all aspects of life. It is hoped that this campaign will allow students to learn about the work each charity does and develop a greater sense of understanding and compassion towards people less fortunate than them.
We have aligned two age groups with a charity and a business each. Our U13s will be raising money for the R U OK Foundation whilst our Opens age group will be raising money for the Hearts4arch foundation.
Family and friends of Archie Perkin who passed away in 2020 from a pre-existing heart condition. His family have established Hearts 4 Arch in his memory, aimed at raising money for Sydney Children’s Hospital to provide mobile ECG units.
Both charities have close ties to the Waverley College community and we feel very privileged to be in a position where we can assist them.
We are very lucky to be supported by such generous local businesses who came on board to assist this campaign. A massive thank you to E-lab Training and The Field at Easts rugby, who have committed to donating $1 for every point scored throughout the CAS rounds.
So far, our Opens age group has raised $207 whilst our U13s have had to endure two washouts. We hope to see them on the field this weekend and in the last two rounds.
An important element of this campaign involves speakers from the charities visiting training and explaining the importance and aims of their work to the respective age groups.
This provides an opportunity for students and staff to gain a better understanding of prevalent health issues and generate a sense of understanding and compassion.
For further information about this campaign or to enquire about next year please email me.

On Friday, 2 August 2024 Year 8 students will be participating in the Academic Assessment Services (Allwell) Test during Periods 1-4. This is a mandatory test and you may remember that all students sat a similar test upon entry to Year 7.
This test forms a key part of Waverley College effectively and consistently measuring the academic growth of all students. When combined with the NAPLAN data, the College will have four years of data measurement to provide feedback to you regarding your son. We also use this data in a variety of ways to improve the delivery of curriculum within the school.
After the testing day you will be provided with a written report, summarising your son’s results. These results will be returned to the College a few weeks after the testing date and will be uploaded to TASS. You will be advised once this has been done.
There is no course material to study prior to the day. It is a measurement, similar to NAPLAN, to give the College a picture of how your son is progressing during Year 8. It is vitally important on the day for your son to try his best, read the instructions carefully and use every minute to maximum effect.
There will be another day allocated to enable students to complete the test if they are away.
Date: 2 August 2024
The tests are held in two (2) sessions with a thirty (30) minute recess break between each session.
8:45 am – Assemble for Roll Taking in Braidwood
Start Sesssion 1
10:50 am – Recess Break
11:20 am – Start Session 2
