Track & Field News

The Waverley College Track & Field team performed strongly last Saturday at Homebush, and there were a number of impressive results, particularly in our younger age groups.

There are still some gaps we need to fill leading up to the CAS Championships on 15 September, and we really need some of our older students to step up to make themselves available for events like Middle Distance, Hurdles and some of the other field events. If we can perform well in these areas, and have our strongest athletes, we will go very well.

House Athletics Carnival – ES Marks

Next Monday is the College House Athletics carnival at ES Marks. There will be buses that depart the College at 8:15am and return by 3pm. However, students are encouraged to make their own way to and from the carnival.

Parents are welcome to attend, but please note that surrounding parking is challenging, and there is no parking on site. Students making their own way to the venue will need to arrive at 8:30am and the carnival concludes at 2:30pm.

We will run the Opens 3km and Javelin from 8:30am for any student who wishes to participate in those events.

In the case of rain, we will notify the community by 7am and the day would then revert to a normal school day.

Please note that there are NO canteen facilities, and students are required to bring their own lunch and snacks.

Invitational Athletics – ES Marks

On Saturday, 27 August, Waverley are hosting the invitational athletics also at ES Marks, and will require some parent assistance with some of the events on the day please.

CAS Track & Field Championships

Thursday, 15 September heralds the first CAS Track & Field Championships for three years.

Students in Years 7 and 12 are required to attend on compulsory supporters’ duty, and will depart the College at 1pm.

The Athletics squad will depart the College at 11am.

We will provide all students in attendance with a lunch pack.

The event concludes at 8pm and students will return back to the College by 9pm. We will provide a return bus back to Maroubra Junction and Hurstville station for any student in attendance from those areas.

On Friday, 19 August, the Waverley College Rugby community gathered at Eastern Suburbs Rugby Club to celebrate the 2022 season. The evening was a huge success and you could certainly feel plenty of positivity and spirit at the venue.

We celebrated the outstanding player performances (Senior and Junior School), those undefeated teams (Prep 1sts, 13As, 13Bs, 15As and 16As), and also gave a special farewell to our departing Year 12 players.

We thank Denis Hickey and the Rugby Supporters’ Club for their efforts in organising a great night. We also thank Ms Jade Sparks (Convenor of Junior School Rugby), Mr Thomas Olds (Prep 1st Coach), Mr Steve O’Donnell (Director of Co-Curricular) and Mr Paul Cornish (1st XV Coach), who all spoke superbly on the night.

A highlight on the night was watching members of our 1st XV presenting our junior students and teams – including the undefeated Prep 1st XV team – with their awards on the night. I know the young Waverlians were thrilled to meet and be presented by the Double V.

Thank You

On behalf of the Waverley College Rugby Community, I would like to thank the following people who contributed so much in the 2022 season:

I hope all members of the community enjoyed the 2022 season, and I look forward to seeing you on the playing fields in 2023!

Points are awarded to the best Companies and Platoons from week to week, and the current point score is as follows:

Cadet Points

Cadet Uniform

The importance of wearing the Cadet Uniform with pride, particularly when in the public domain to and from school, has been communicated to the Unit. When we wear the Cadet Uniform, we are representing our schools and our Cadet Unit.

Even though we are not wearing the Army Uniform, as members of the Australian Army Cadets, we are also representing the members of the Australian Defence Force who have served our country.

There are certainly lots of ways to express individuality in Cadets, but the uniform is not one of them, and we need to wear it with pride, with respect, and with an understanding of what it means to the Australian Public.

To this end, headdress must be worn at all times when outside the school grounds, and the DPCU shirt must be worn at all times, including at school. The undershirt is not an outer garment, and if it is warm weather, the undershirt may be removed, but not the DPCU shirt.

Dates for Bivouac at Holsworthy Barracks

It was disappointing to have to cancel the Bivouac planned for this coming weekend, but we have now booked an alternative. We will hold a Bivouac in Term 4 from 4pm Saturday, 5 November – 5pm Sunday, 6 November at Holsworthy Barracks. This is a voluntary Bivouac, open to the whole Unit for some field experience and camping Cadet-style in preparation for AFX in 2023. More details will follow in due course, but for those interested, please keep this November weekend free.

Dates for Promotions Courses

For those planning holidays in 2023, the Promotions Courses have now been set for the Winbourne Conference Centre from Monday, 26 June – Saturday, 1 July 2023. Please keep these dates free if your son or daughter is interested leadership training and fulfilling one of the many promotion opportunities in Cadets.

Tevlin House had a highly successful evening on Friday at a Winter Sleep Out in our Gym. This concluded the recent Winter appeal donation drive, also for the Matthew Talbot Hostel, with guest speakers leading a fantastic discussion with boys on the common factors influencing the different types of homelessness, and the services aimed to support those without safe or permanent accommodation.

Nate Smith

Nate Smith (Year 10), also provided an inspiring local story of how small actions can grow to provide a large and ongoing impact through the evolution of ‘Pantry 4 the People’, a community pantry in Botany. Boys discussed how we can all assist in practical ways throughout our lives, and treat those experiencing homelessness with dignity.

Nate Smith at Pantry 4 The People in Botany

Nate Smith at Pantry 4 The People in Botany

Sincere Thanks

Thankyou to all the Tevlin and Waverley community for the fantastic response to the Matthew Talbot Hostel’s donation drive.

Waverley are also highly grateful to Woolworths for contributing boxes of toiletries in a huge delivery, to assist our contributions.

Thank you to the many Tevlin mentors who assisted in supervising the evening, and below are some student accounts of their experiences.

Two Student Reflections on the Sleepout

Last Friday night, Tevlin boys had the opportunity to sleep out, staying the night in the College gym as part of our homelessness initiative and support of the Matthew Talbot Hostel. During this time, special guests Damian Royce and Mike Synnott from the hostel, enlightened Tevlin House on the issue of homelessness as a whole, the work provided by the hostel, and answered the many questions we had.

Thanks to the hundreds of donations from the Waverley Community over the past four weeks, Tevlin boys organised these items, and put together more than 220 kitchen and toiletry starter packs for the Matthew Talbot Hostel.

I most enjoyed putting the packs together, as it was a rewarding activity, and the most challenging part of the night was undoubtedly the sleep. Being away from the comfort and security of our homes, and beds in particular, really gave us an insight into what our homeless population have to deal with on a daily basis. – Daniel Di Francesco (Year 12)

2022 Tevlin Winter Sleepout

Last Friday night, the Tevlin boys participated in the Matthew Talbot sleepout. The aim of this event was for us to donate essentials to the homeless, whilst also being able to experience how tough homeless people have it, one example being their sleeping situation.

We started off the night at 7 o’clock by gathering around a circle and partaking in a detailed Q and A with two representatives from the Matthew Talbot Hostel, Damian Royce and Mike Synnott. They explained to us how tough the conditions homeless people at the hostel encounter, for example, some of the residents suffer from PTSD, so they don’t feel safe living within four walls, and would rather sleep in a park with a group of homeless people.

We also created essential care packages for the residents with all the donated items. Our guest taught us so much important information about how most homeless people function in society. We enjoyed the sleepout, as we were able to choose where we wanted to sleep, and this gave us insight into how homeless people would prefer to sleep near people they trust.

What challenged me the most, was sleeping without a sleeping bag and just a light blanket, as I wanted to experience how tough the homeless sleep. I was truly grateful for this experience, as it really opened my eyes about how fortunate I am to have my own room, and have the guarantee of sleeping in my comfy bed every night, an opportunity that most homeless people don’t have.

To help homeless people in the future, I would like to advocate more hostels being opened to keep homeless people safe and to give them a sense of security. – Christian Robbins (Year 10)

In the leadup to their examination period, students were fortunate to have the opportunity to pose their own questions to the bank. Questions submitted included the role of monetary policy, future rate rises, the accuracy of bank predictions, China’s looming invasion of Taiwan, and the current conflict with Russia and the Ukraine.

Overall, students found the event very worthwhile. Thank you to Mr Picone and Ms Barber from St Clare’s College.

Throughout the year, our College Captains and Prefects have represented Waverley College at various leadership afternoons and conferences at surrounding schools, to share ideas and leadership initiatives.

One of our College Vice-Captains, Guy Hammerschmidt, reflects on these experiences and the insights that they have gained from these valuable encounters:

We have been privileged to be invited to neighbouring schools, where we have been able to interact with extremely inspirational and influential leaders within our community, such as Dr Marjorie O’Neill, and former Prime Minister, Malcom Turnbull.

Through such experiences, we have gained valuable insights into how we as young leaders can enact real change within our own communities.

Through further collaboration with young leaders from other schools, we have had the opportunity to discuss topics and issues that are of critical relevance for us, such as refining consent education, and building a more inclusive environment for individuals within the LGBTQAI+ community.

It has been a great honour to work alongside aspiring young leaders, who we have certainly learned a lot from, and have made connections that I’m sure will continue after school. Guy Hammerschmidt

In collaboration with St Clares College, the Year 11 Hospitality students catered for the TAS/Art and Design HSC Showcase last week. These talented young ladies and gentlemen created and served canapes and sweet treats.

Items included mini tartlets, salt and pepper calamari, cheeseburger sliders, smoked salmon, cream cheese and dill croutons, and mini banoffee pies. The teamwork, organisation and enthusiasm was commendable and it is wonderful to see the students’ culinary skills continue to develop and improve.

Science Week 2022 – Glass – More Than the Eye Meets

Incursion ‘Window to the World – A STEM Story’

What a wonderful week it was for our students last week. We made sure we celebrated Science Week in a variety of ways. We started the week off with a great incursion called ‘Window to the World – A STEM Story.’ We were lucky to have two very talented and entertaining actors who really delved deep into the world of ‘glass.’ This was very informative and a great way to introduce the theme of Science Week to our students.

JS Science Week

In-class Experiments

Throughout the week, students were involved in some great hands-on experiments where they looked at Surface Tension.

Students completed two experiments:

  1. Rainbow milk
  2. Pepper surface tension

Students loved the opportunity to get messy, make a hypothesis and were amazed with the results.

Live Experiments

We were so lucky to have our talented senior school science teachers come down to the Junior School to share their knowledge and skills about science. The students were blown away by the live experiments!

They loved the giant elephant’s toothpaste, the hydrogen balloon explosion and the dry ice. A big thank you to Ms Emily Pace, Ms Gemma Brown and Mr James Listberger who delivered these mind-blowing and exciting experiments.

Classes also had the opportunity to watch some great virtual ‘excursions’ online through SciFest 2022, where they were able to see live experiments. ‘Breaking Point’ was one particular excursion that focused on glass and had fun experiments. Students are still able to watch these if they missed out.

NSW AFL Team

Marcus Strbac (Year 6), recently travelled to Adelaide as a member of the NSW Under 12 AFL team to compete in the School Sport Australia National Championships.

Following his NSW selection from the PSSA carnival in Coffs Harbour, the team met for a three-day training camp in July at Barooga on the Murray River.

Prior to leaving for Adelaide, the NSW Blue Pups (as the team is fondly known), were invited to attend Sydney Swans training, were able to soak up the atmosphere of the SCG for team photos, and also have their jerseys presented by current Swans stars Nick Blakey and Errol Gulden. Marcus was presented with jersey number 5 – like his favourite player Isaac Heeney (Class of 2014) – a former Waverley Senior School student.

Congratulations Marcus Strbac!

Congratulations Marcus Strbac!

Over six days, the Blue Pups were defeated in their first two games against traditional AFL states like Victoria and SA, and had extremely close games with WA and QLD, where a win could have gone anyone’s way. The NSW state coaching team was proud of the closing gap with the more dominating AFL states, and said the boys should hold their heads high. In their fifth game, NSW had a convincing win over ACT.

Kicking a goal 30 metres out, in the tournament against Western Australia, will be one of Marcus’ most memorable moments playing for NSW, along with making some fantastic and lifelong new mates.

The experience off the field with all his team mates was just as exciting as the one on the field, and he is thankful to Waverley Junior School for providing him with such a fantastic opportunity.

Sami Bayly

Sami is an author and illustrator. Her new book is coming out in September and the Waverley students were the first to see the hard copy.

An essential aspect of supporting your son with his reading is to allow him to make his own book choices. The Pop-up Bookshop was a great experience for the students to enjoy browsing and buying books.

Writing Workshop

Writing a story continuously is a fun way to work collaboratively, constructively, critically and creatively. The students in Years 5 and 6 showed many strong writing skills, especially when working under pressure with time constraints.

I’m looking forward to reading the finished stories and sharing them with the boys. A special thank you to Mr William Roberts who supported the Year 5 Writing Workshop.

Book Week Competition Winners

Thank you to all the Junior School students who entered one or both, Book Week competitions. It was lovely to see students’ interpretation of the theme of ‘Dreaming with eyes open…’

Ms Mary Ryan, Literacy Coordinator, had a tough job judging, see the winners below.

Writing Poetry Competition

The judge said: A beautifully composed inspirational poem. Ryan has offered the readers (young and old) lots of ideas on how to achieve our dreams. Thoughtful use of rhyme and structure.

Dream Big

Dreams will always be there,

They sit in your mind under your hair.

It’s something you look forward to,

Or a thing you practise through and through.

You want to achieve it

And not quit.

Keep your eyes open

Don’t close them.

If you want to win a short distance race,

Start with your fastest pace.

You can’t win with your eyes closed,

Otherwise you should just stop and pose.

Keep them open nice and wide,

 Run with swift, speedy strides.

Ace a really difficult test,

And you keep on getting stressed.

Open your eyes as wide as you can,

Calm down and make a plan.

Write down your answers one by one,

And as soon as you know it you are done.

Compose a song,

And everything is wrong.

You believe in yourself and open your eyes,

Then you give everyone a staggering surprise.

You start to sing,

And words gush out like a flowing spring.

Become a soccer star,

But you can’t shoot the ball very far.

Open your eyes and believe,

And you will achieve.

You play a game and shoot,

With a brilliant goal you celebrate with a royal salute.

You can always achieve,

If you believe.

Keep your eyes open wide,

And use them as a guide.

Don’t keep them closed,

Don’t sit and doze.

Keep them open,

Not closed.

The judge said: I love the imagery in this poem. Lots of clever repetition and contrast too. A wordsmith!

I’m Thinking Tall

I am thinking of a giant,

I am thinking of the moon.

I am thinking oh so tall.

I will grow pretty soon, I won’t be small.

I will be so so much more.

I am thinking of a giraffe or a giant

Wait!

I have already said that.

I will be taller than the Queen’s Guards in high hats.

The taller I’ll grow the more I will show they will know.

And that is that.

It’s all in perspective

When dealing with heights from up in a skyscraper

I would look like an ant on a big piece of paper

Then down below,

I would grow and outgrow.

I am thinking so tall,

Being small is such a bore

Through the clouds I will soar

By tomorrow giraffes

Won’t seem tall

A-tall.

The judge said: Beautiful imagery in this poem which really captures the power of dreams and the imagination. Interesting structure too – one single verse captures the movement of falling and drifting out of reality and into another realm.

Dreaming with your Eyes Open

I wander throughout my day

strolling the woods because I could and I would.

I stumble on a patch of sticks and fall into something thick,

it’s warm, it’s cozy, it’s dozy.

I close my eyes and relax. I have to be home by sunset so I don’t plan on staying long.

I pull myself up and start on the voyage home.

With my eyes still closed I find my way into the dark, and BAM!

I see swirls of color and balls of fire,

Other planets, bursting with diversity and joy,

Like a planet of my own.

I take my first steps on the firm ground,

Then I feel weightless and calm. I drift up

then slowly start to come down.

My heart won’t stop beating with pumps of energy,

I start running to the other side of my planet,

I see the most staggering yet peaceful creatures.

I keep moving, fast.

Drifting in the air as I jump

I dash through the world until it ends

Just a faded black line.

I won’t stop running, I run thinking I’ll float,

But I fall

I fall into a small black hole, I think.

I keep falling until…

Whoosh!

In a blink, I’m back in the woods.

I look up high in the sky to see the sun start to go to bed.

I rub my eyes and walk back home.

The judge said: Great use of contrast here and I love how Kobi has interpreted the stimulus. An inspirational poem of a different nature. Subtle but extremely powerful.

Dreaming with my Eyes Open

I can sometimes drift into a Daydream of happy times

in moments of sadness with my eyes open

A little smile will arrive.

Dreaming With My Eyes Open again

To give me hope of happy times.

I can sometimes escape sad times

Dreaming with my eyes open.

Dreaming with my eyes open and sad moments.

To always remember I am thoughtful of others.

I dream that others can see that words can hurt.

But dreaming with my eyes open will help

Me see that those happy days will arrive.

I am home and safe to hear those words of kindness.

They always say the right things to make me see those who hurt with their words. Have problems of their own but don’t have the tools just yet

to dream of the happy times in moments of their uncertainties.

Show kindness to those people

hopefully they too will Daydream with their eyes open!

So with my eyes wide open once again

I’m ready for the day ahead.

This week, the 2022 HSC Music Recital showcased the talents of our Year 12 students in the PAC Recital Room. Eight students played and sang diverse repertoire on their chosen instrument, with material ranging from rock guitarist Joe Satriani’s ‘Satch Boogie’ to classical works by Saint-Saëns, popular songs, blues pieces and works by jazz legends such as Denny Ilett.

It was clear that students had spent countless hours perfecting their chosen pieces and had a true understanding of their instrument.

Playing to an appreciative audience of parents, carers, students and teachers, these students demonstrated that they were well prepared for their upcoming HSC practical examination and were comfortable in a performance environment.

We wish each and every one of you, the very best for your HSC.

Thank you to our music makers: Max Leedham (voice); Luke Stewart (tuba); Hugo Pizzol (trumpet); Louis Kitto (electric guitar); Evan Hodges (alto saxophone); Harrison Gippel (clarinet); Charles Alexander (electric guitar) and Guy Hammerschmidt (trombone).

Mid-Term Reminders

At Thursday’s College Assembly, I celebrated this week’s upstander, Aungier student Charlie Smith, who was spotted at Charing Cross escorting an elderly lady whilst engaging in conversation, and then pressing the button to ensure she was able to cross the street safely.

Charlie was in perfect and complete academic uniform and was a fantastic advertisement for the College. This was just something so simple and humbling to see. Well done Charlie!

The middle of the Term is a good opportunity to provide a timely reminder of the College’s expectations regarding uniform and appearance. Boys are required to wear their full academic uniform to and from school each day. This includes the College blazer in Terms 2 and 3. Haircuts should be at the same length and not below the collar. Students should be freshly shaven each morning.

A detailed outline of the College expectations appears in the College Diary. These expectations are consistent with other independent schools in the eastern suburbs, and have the support of staff, the Parents’ Association and Old Boys’ Union.

At Waverley College, we hold an expectation that students commit to, and accept responsibility for, their learning. We work in relationships of mutual respect and trust, whereby our students are accountable for their choices that either enable or diminish a positive learning experience. We believe our students should always be well prepared and organised for classes.

The Wellbeing Team relies heavily on the partnership between the College, parents/carers and your sons. Parents/carers are encouraged to support the College by discussing pastoral notes they receive from their son’s teachers during the day, affirming positive notes and looking at constructive feedback as an opportunity for improvement. The more parents and carers support the College, the better the outcomes for their sons.
