From the Director of Co-curriculum, Stephen O’Donnell
Football
Our Football teams had impressive results last weekend against local rivals Cranbrook with a number of wins and much better results than in 2016. We have also been staging ‘football academy’ style sessions every Friday morning at Waverley Park which have been run by old boy, Jamie Gomez. Jamie is a terrific supporter of the College and is also a very experienced coach and player, and we are blessed to have him involved.
Our 1st XI are through to the quarter finals this week of the CIS Football Cup and we wish them well.
We have also been conducting goal-keeper training for all teams and encourage all goal-keepers to attend these sessions for further development. This week we are at home for Football against Barker and the Football Supporter Group needs some help with the BBQ at Queens Park from any parents or carers who can spare a little time.
Rugby
Our 1st and 2nd Rugby teams bounced back from the disappointment of the previous week and over the whole day the results were shared against Shore. This week we will travel to St Joseph’s and the games will be tough, however, we need to stick to our game plans and keep a positive mindset against this GPS powerhouse. Passing the ball around and making tackles will help all teams perform well.
Volleyball, AFL and Swimming
Our volleyballers found the going tough against some well-drilled Sydney High teams but it is great to have this sport back at Waverley!
Our AFL teams also found the going tough but I am confident they will bounce back this week. We are looking forward to having John Blakey, assistant coach of the Swans attending some training sessions in coming weeks and this should be great for team morale. Thank you also to those parents who have volunteered to be a part of the new AFL Supporter Group and we wish them all the best in for this and future seasons.
I wish Stuart Swinburn and Erwan Le Pechoux all the best as they attend the NSW All Schools Swimming this Friday.
May 20 Round
On the weekend of 20 May, both Football and Rugby will play at home and there will be a compulsory Supporter Duty for all of Year 9. These students must either attend the 1st XI Football from 10am to 12pm OR the 1st XV Rugby from 3pm to 5pm. Correct full sports uniform or school uniform must be worn and high standards of behaviour and cheering are expected. This is a compulsory event for Year 9 and has been part of the College calendar since the start of the year.
The Rugby Supporter Group would also love some assistance in both the canteen and BBQ for this day.
I would like to extend warm thanks to the Rugby Supporter Group for their generous donation of funds for some of the new pieces of equipment in the weights room.
Hockey
We have had a generous offer from Marcia Scally to see if there are any students who might be interested in forming a hockey side to represent Waverley at the inaugural Australian Schools Hockey Championships in December in Canberra. If we have enough players then we will look at organising training sessions.
If you or your son are interested in being a part of this team, can you please send me an email: sodonnell@waverley.nsw.edu.au
Good luck to all teams this weekend and ‘Go the Waves!’
