Incursion ‘Window to the World – A STEM Story’
What a wonderful week it was for our students last week. We made sure we celebrated Science Week in a variety of ways. We started the week off with a great incursion called ‘Window to the World – A STEM Story.’ We were lucky to have two very talented and entertaining actors who really delved deep into the world of ‘glass.’ This was very informative and a great way to introduce the theme of Science Week to our students.
In-class Experiments
Throughout the week, students were involved in some great hands-on experiments where they looked at Surface Tension.
Students completed two experiments:
Students loved the opportunity to get messy, make a hypothesis and were amazed with the results.
Live Experiments
We were so lucky to have our talented senior school science teachers come down to the Junior School to share their knowledge and skills about science. The students were blown away by the live experiments!
They loved the giant elephant’s toothpaste, the hydrogen balloon explosion and the dry ice. A big thank you to Ms Emily Pace, Ms Gemma Brown and Mr James Listberger who delivered these mind-blowing and exciting experiments.
Classes also had the opportunity to watch some great virtual ‘excursions’ online through SciFest 2022, where they were able to see live experiments. ‘Breaking Point’ was one particular excursion that focused on glass and had fun experiments. Students are still able to watch these if they missed out.
It was a wonderful Science Week, and I can’t wait to hear which Junior School students won the Scientist of Waverley Competition next week.

This week, Ryan Desousa (5 Blue) returned from the Australian Swimming Championships in Brisbane, with three Bronze medals for the following Multi-Class Events:
Waverley College would like to congratulate Ryan on these huge achievements.
Waverley is very proud of you, Ryan!
Marcus Strbac (Year 6), recently travelled to Adelaide as a member of the NSW Under 12 AFL team to compete in the School Sport Australia National Championships.
Following his NSW selection from the PSSA carnival in Coffs Harbour, the team met for a three-day training camp in July at Barooga on the Murray River.
Prior to leaving for Adelaide, the NSW Blue Pups (as the team is fondly known), were invited to attend Sydney Swans training, were able to soak up the atmosphere of the SCG for team photos, and also have their jerseys presented by current Swans stars Nick Blakey and Errol Gulden. Marcus was presented with jersey number 5 – like his favourite player Isaac Heeney (Class of 2014) – a former Waverley Senior School student.
Congratulations Marcus Strbac!
Over six days, the Blue Pups were defeated in their first two games against traditional AFL states like Victoria and SA, and had extremely close games with WA and QLD, where a win could have gone anyone’s way. The NSW state coaching team was proud of the closing gap with the more dominating AFL states, and said the boys should hold their heads high. In their fifth game, NSW had a convincing win over ACT.
Kicking a goal 30 metres out, in the tournament against Western Australia, will be one of Marcus’ most memorable moments playing for NSW, along with making some fantastic and lifelong new mates.
The experience off the field with all his team mates was just as exciting as the one on the field, and he is thankful to Waverley Junior School for providing him with such a fantastic opportunity.

Congratulations to the Junior School Debating Team who once again managed to walk away with a double win against Kincoppal.
The topic was ‘That schools should only use popular modern books to teach English.’
The adjudicator was highly impressed with Waverley’s strong arguments and rebuttals. The teams are now preparing for a Debating Gala Day which will be held at the PLC campus. Here they will debate back to back against a variety of schools.
Junior school students enjoyed a highly entertaining and engaging presentation from Sami Bayly as part of our Book Week celebrations.
Sami is an author and illustrator. Her new book is coming out in September and the Waverley students were the first to see the hard copy.
The boys were lucky to hear about all the ugly, dangerous and peculiar creatures in our world, and even have a demonstration on how to draw one!
An essential aspect of supporting your son with his reading is to allow him to make his own book choices. The Pop-up Bookshop was a great experience for the students to enjoy browsing and buying books.
Writing a story continuously is a fun way to work collaboratively, constructively, critically and creatively. The students in Years 5 and 6 showed many strong writing skills, especially when working under pressure with time constraints.
I’m looking forward to reading the finished stories and sharing them with the boys. A special thank you to Mr William Roberts who supported the Year 5 Writing Workshop.
Thank you to all the Junior School students who entered one or both, Book Week competitions. It was lovely to see students’ interpretation of the theme of ‘Dreaming with eyes open…’
Ms Mary Ryan, Literacy Coordinator, had a tough job judging, see the winners below.
The judge said: A beautifully composed inspirational poem. Ryan has offered the readers (young and old) lots of ideas on how to achieve our dreams. Thoughtful use of rhyme and structure.
Dreams will always be there,
They sit in your mind under your hair.
It’s something you look forward to,
Or a thing you practise through and through.
You want to achieve it
And not quit.
Keep your eyes open
Don’t close them.
If you want to win a short distance race,
Start with your fastest pace.
You can’t win with your eyes closed,
Otherwise you should just stop and pose.
Keep them open nice and wide,
Run with swift, speedy strides.
Ace a really difficult test,
And you keep on getting stressed.
Open your eyes as wide as you can,
Calm down and make a plan.
Write down your answers one by one,
And as soon as you know it you are done.
Compose a song,
And everything is wrong.
You believe in yourself and open your eyes,
Then you give everyone a staggering surprise.
You start to sing,
And words gush out like a flowing spring.
Become a soccer star,
But you can’t shoot the ball very far.
Open your eyes and believe,
And you will achieve.
You play a game and shoot,
With a brilliant goal you celebrate with a royal salute.
You can always achieve,
If you believe.
Keep your eyes open wide,
And use them as a guide.
Don’t keep them closed,
Don’t sit and doze.
Keep them open,
Not closed.
The judge said: I love the imagery in this poem. Lots of clever repetition and contrast too. A wordsmith!
I am thinking of a giant,
I am thinking of the moon.
I am thinking oh so tall.
I will grow pretty soon, I won’t be small.
I will be so so much more.
I am thinking of a giraffe or a giant
Wait!
I have already said that.
I will be taller than the Queen’s Guards in high hats.
The taller I’ll grow the more I will show they will know.
And that is that.
It’s all in perspective
When dealing with heights from up in a skyscraper
I would look like an ant on a big piece of paper
Then down below,
I would grow and outgrow.
I am thinking so tall,
Being small is such a bore
Through the clouds I will soar
By tomorrow giraffes
Won’t seem tall
A-tall.
The judge said: Beautiful imagery in this poem which really captures the power of dreams and the imagination. Interesting structure too – one single verse captures the movement of falling and drifting out of reality and into another realm.
I wander throughout my day
strolling the woods because I could and I would.
I stumble on a patch of sticks and fall into something thick,
it’s warm, it’s cozy, it’s dozy.
I close my eyes and relax. I have to be home by sunset so I don’t plan on staying long.
I pull myself up and start on the voyage home.
With my eyes still closed I find my way into the dark, and BAM!
I see swirls of color and balls of fire,
Other planets, bursting with diversity and joy,
Like a planet of my own.
I take my first steps on the firm ground,
Then I feel weightless and calm. I drift up
then slowly start to come down.
My heart won’t stop beating with pumps of energy,
I start running to the other side of my planet,
I see the most staggering yet peaceful creatures.
I keep moving, fast.
Drifting in the air as I jump
I dash through the world until it ends
Just a faded black line.
I won’t stop running, I run thinking I’ll float,
But I fall
I fall into a small black hole, I think.
I keep falling until…
Whoosh!
In a blink, I’m back in the woods.
I look up high in the sky to see the sun start to go to bed.
I rub my eyes and walk back home.
The judge said: Great use of contrast here and I love how Kobi has interpreted the stimulus. An inspirational poem of a different nature. Subtle but extremely powerful.
I can sometimes drift into a Daydream of happy times
in moments of sadness with my eyes open
A little smile will arrive.
Dreaming With My Eyes Open again
To give me hope of happy times.
I can sometimes escape sad times
Dreaming with my eyes open.
Dreaming with my eyes open and sad moments.
To always remember I am thoughtful of others.
I dream that others can see that words can hurt.
But dreaming with my eyes open will help
Me see that those happy days will arrive.
I am home and safe to hear those words of kindness.
They always say the right things to make me see those who hurt with their words. Have problems of their own but don’t have the tools just yet
to dream of the happy times in moments of their uncertainties.
Show kindness to those people
hopefully they too will Daydream with their eyes open!
So with my eyes wide open once again
I’m ready for the day ahead.

I feel privileged and honoured to be the classroom teacher of 5 Orange. These boys have embraced Waverley College life and aim to make the most of every opportunity that is offered to them.
5 Orange believes in manners, respect, teamwork, and displaying a growth mindset at all times. The young men of this class know that life is not always perfect, and use strategies such as the ‘reset button’ and ‘changing your internal dialogue’ to get back on track.
5 Orange loves to seize any opportunity to work outside and enjoy the beautiful outdoor learning spaces that the Junior School Campus has to offer.

Over the past two weeks, both Year 5 and Year 6 have been involved in their first ever retreat days at Waverley College. Both days focused on themes of friendship, leadership, inclusiveness and being an Upstander.
All activities were led by our Year 11 students including making House Wristbands, defining qualities that make good leaders and good friends. They also had the chance to listen to Old Boys Daniel Andrews, Harley McGuiggan, Pat Clifton and Andrew Green (Riverview), talking to the students about leadership qualities beyond their schooling years.
The day was completed with some House team building games including tunnel ball and kick tennis, which the boys thoroughly enjoyed.

This past Wednesday, 17 August the Junior School finally participated in our House Athletics Carnival after its postponement in Term 2. The weather was on our side, with blue skies and the sun keeping everyone warm. It was amazing to have so many parents supporting and celebrating their son in all of his nominated events.
The day started with field events (Shot Put, High Jump, Long Jump and Discus) which ran the entire day.
Midway through the morning we began the track events (100m, 200m, 800m), which demonstrated some amazing results for all age groups.
The highlight of the day was the involvement of a large portion of students in the novelty events (Three-Legged Race, Wheelbarrow Race and Tug of War).
The day finished with some exciting events including the 100m final, 8x100m House Relays and the infamous Staff/Parents vs Students relay. We had widespread involvement and participation from all students, which made the day that much more enjoyable and engaging for our students and parents.
A massive congratulations to Brennan for being the Junior School House Champions for 2022! They finished on 386 points.
Congratulations to the other Houses for their efforts:
A further congratulations to the following students who were announced and celebrated as the age champions for the carnival:
U10 Students
1st – Charlie Carrano
2nd – Ollie Burke
3rd – Jaden Truscott
4th – Sam Rogers
4th – Marcus Juhasz
U11 Students

Now that the Carnival is completed, I will send out information to parents, inviting students to train with the Senior School across the next four weeks for the athletics season. This will be dependent on the Carnival results, and more students than just the age champions will be invited to be involved.
Nominations for IPSHA Athletics Carnival are due on Monday, 22 August and I will be sure to let those families know, as soon as those nominations are sent.
The FunRun Fundraiser has seen some amazing achievements within two weeks of the fundraising period. Two weeks into the event, I’ll thrilled to share the following milestones reached:
The FunRun ‘Big Show’ event is now only a week away (Friday, 26 August) and we’re ecstatic to have all students at Waverley Park to conclude the fundraising at an absolute high point.
The event itself will take place from 10am – 12pm at Waverley Park. Students will move around the created running track, through colour spraying sections and giant inflatables.
There will be an awards ceremony, and seven staff members will be slimed at the event. Parents are warmly welcome to attend this event, and we look forward to seeing you there.
I please ask parents to prepare for this, by ensuring your son has a white t-shirt that he can wear on the day. This is because all students will be sprayed with safe/sustainable coloured powder.
Thank you to all families for being on board and we further encourage you to spread the message far and wide in this final week of fundraising, explaining the causes we’re fundraising for, and the meaning behind each chosen charity.

The Junior School are excited to be having our House Athletics Carnival next Wednesday, 17 August at Queens Park.
Students will need to arrive at school dressed in their House colours. Class teachers will mark their rolls, and students will be walked to Queens Park by their teacher.
Students have now been told their race divisions and have nominated for the specific events for the day, which include the following track, field and novelty events:
Families have been sent a Google Form to complete by their son’s class teacher. This will allow us to collate permission for how your son gets home after the carnival. Please ensure you complete this, to assist us further on the day.
The canteen at Queens Park will be open on the day and will be cash only. Students will have a chance to get recess and lunch during the day. Alternatively, students are encouraged to pack their own recess and lunch for the day.
We also ask that you ensure your son packs water, sunscreen and a hat.
Parents are invited to attend the carnival, we have reserved the Grandstand of the Pavilion for all of our guests.
The Junior School is looking forward to an amazing day, and are excited to welcome parents and carers to see their son compete in many athletics events.

Reading takes us on an adventure where we follow other people’s dreams. We learn about their stories and escape our everyday lives.
When we grow up we get a chance to create our own story. Our dreams can become real. So read often and as much as you can, all while dreaming with your eyes wide open.
Just like the characters in your favourite stories your dreams can one day be a reality.

A double win for Waverley last week. The boys had their debate against Kambala. The debate topic: ‘That we should ban having birds as pets.’
Both teams had strong arguments with supporting examples, and worked together to put forward strong cases.
Debating develops important skills that are transferable to other areas: exploring ideas, developing arguments, articulating opinions, building confidence, being able to think on one’s feet, and becoming a good public speaker.
Congratulations on your double win!

A huge congratulations to Reese Araujo from 6 Blue for securing a $30,000 donation for our FunRun from the Judith Neilson Foundation. Reese bravely emailed Judith’s foundation, kindly asking for a donation, and he was certainly not expecting one so generous!
Reese has taken his fundraising very seriously, and is committed to reducing homework and allowing mufti clothing if elected ‘Principal for the Day.’

This term, Year 6 is studying Asian Art in their Visual Arts key learning area. We have been learning about the spiritual and structural features of pagodas.
Inspired by the line, shape and form of these Asian buildings, we have been creating line drawings. Working on this skill was challenging, but has been a wonderful way to explore different types of art and develop our artistic capabilities.
Combined with the line drawings, we used a Japanese technique ‘shibori’ which utilises tissue paper and water to create a unique, dyed effect on the backing paper.
Enjoy the final results from Jack Mihalakis and Lachlan Symes below.

This week, Fire and Rescue NSW came and presented a bushfire talk to Year 5 as part of their Geography studies. Students have been learning all about how bushfires are managed from prevention to rebuilding after them.
We were also lucky enough to have some firefighters from the Randwick Station come along for a question and answer session. They had some great stories and examples of their real-life experiences as well as a lot of tips for keeping safe.
Fire and Rescue NSW have asked us to ask all of our Waverley parents and carers to check that they have a working smoke alarm in their homes. They say that we have had a disastrous winter in terms of fire fatalities, and many of these deaths could have been prevented if the property had a working smoke alarm.
Local stations carry out ‘Home Fire Safety Visits’ free of charge. They will come to homes to check, and if needed install new alarms free of charge.
They also offer other sound Fire Safety messaging. You can call your nearest station or book a visit online easily on the FRNSW website.

I’d like to wish all Junior teams the best of luck tomorrow in their final round for the Winter Co-Curricular season. It has been the first winter season of sport that has gone uninterrupted due to COVID-19 since 2019, excluding the amount of rain we experienced.
I’d particularly like to thank all families for their ongoing support towards their son’s commitment to playing sport at Waverley College. It is an integral part of these boys’ development, and strongly promotes our students to live active and healthy lifestyles each and every day.
I’d also like to mention and thank all the coaches for their continued commitment to giving our students the opportunity to better their skills, in a fun and safe environment each week.
There have been nail-biting games, continual highlights and some lowlights, but students gave their absolute all and demonstrated teamwork, positive sportsmanship, resilience and pride to be representing Waverley College. Bring on 2023 Winter Sport at Waverley!
All families of sons receiving an award have been informed about the presentation nights for their respective sports. These students and families are invited to attend, and it will be a great opportunity to connect with the Senior School and celebrate the Winter sport season.
The FunRun Fundraiser has seen some amazing achievements within two week of the fundraising period. Two weeks into the event, I’m thrilled to share the following milestones reached:
The Junior School is unbelievably impressed by the level of commitment shown by the students, and we cannot wait to see how they progress leading up to the big FunRun event.
We thank all families for being on board and we further encourage you to spread the message far and wide, explaining the causes we’re fundraising for and the meaning behind each chosen charity.
If you would like to pass on the Waverley College Junior School fundraising link below, people can use this, or alternately, students send out their personal link themselves to increase their fundraising efforts:

During the week, Jake competed in Mangrove Mountain, NSW at the Show Jumping Championships. He was able to come away with three 1st place ribbons and one 3rd place ribbon.
Jake and his family have horse riding in their DNA, and we’re unbelievably proud of his achievements. We can’t wait to see what is to come, and as a College, we congratulate you!
We’re so proud of you, Jake McEvoy
A large number of Year 6 Waverley Junior students were part of the SJRU U12 Development Gala Tournament during the holidays.
The tournament was held at Manly, with the Randwick team having 14 of 23 boys, being Waverley students. They were the only team to win all three games, and had the lowest points conceded over the tournament, winning the tournament as undefeated Champions.
Congratulations: Cooper Mott, Riley Carr, Nicholas Peshos, Lachlan Symes, Beau Matheson-Rayner, Cian Brady, Angus Palm, Emilio Gomez, Kobi Keenan, Dylan Crewe, George Whitehouse, Finn McIvor, Max Nicholson, Dean Leontsinis.

This week in 5 White, we designed and created an artwork that displayed the effect plastic pollution has on sea creatures and the ocean. Much of our unwanted plastic ends up in the ocean – around 8 million tonnes of it every year, in fact!
Because plastic takes 400 years to break down, it stays there for a long, long time, putting our friends beneath the waves in serious danger.
Our task was to create a collage inside the body of our chosen animal, by cutting out pictures of plastic objects and food from magazines or newspapers, and pasting them closely together, overlapping each other.
We had a lot of fun, getting creative and learning new facts about plastic pollution in our oceans!
By 5 White Students
In this lesson I learned that 700 different species of animals are believed to be severely threatened because of plastic pollution in the ocean. I also discovered that 10% of all dead animals found in beach cleanups worldwide have been entangled in plastic bags. The last fact I learned is that 5 trillion pieces of plastic are estimated to be floating in the world’s seas. I enjoyed this activity because it was fun to search through magazines and newspapers, and cutting out food and plastic products.
By Sam Peate
Did you know that 90% of seabirds eat plastic rubbish mistaking it for food? Did you know that 52% of sea turtles have accidentally eaten plastic bags mistaking them for jellyfish? I also learned that 443 animals and birds were found trapped by marine debris (such as old ropes, nets, mesh and wires) during a recent international coastal cleanup. I enjoyed this activity because it was very creative and clever with the way that we did it.

Orientation Day for students attending Waverley College in Year 7, 2023 will be held on Tuesday, 8 November 2022.
*Please save this date in your calendar: Tuesday, 8 November 2022.
We are looking forward to welcoming your son to the Senior Campus as he undertakes his transition from the Junior campus. On this day, your son will experience a range of activities and meet with peers in his House Group.
The Heads of House shall be the students’ key point of connection throughout the day. This is a wonderful opportunity for your son to familiarise himself with the key staff and students who will be his pastoral support at Waverley College.
Further information on Orientation Day will be advised as the date draws nearer.
In Nurrunga last week, and earlier in the year, Mr Gregerson, Director of Business Services, advised that as per the updated Conditions of Enrolment and as indicated on the College website, Term 1 tuition fees and technology levy will be charged in Term 4, 2022.
You will still receive an invoice in Term 1, 2023 for any applicable sundries, excursion fees and camps.
Please be advised that if payment is not made by the due date, your son’s enrolment will be forfeited, and his place will be offered to a waitlisted candidate. Additionally, if you pay the fees and then decide to withdraw from the College before the Year 7 commencement date, the Term 1 tuition fees are not refundable or transferable.
If your circumstances have changed and you are no longer intending to send your son to Waverley College in 2023, please advise me immediately via email of your withdrawal, and the Finance team will ensure you are removed from the Term 4 fee run.
Kind regards,
Ms Kylie Anderson

Primary school is not always about the academic results your son achieves but also the social experiences he creates. I always love visiting one of our spaces in the Junior School, The Learning Hub.
I enjoy seeing the students interact with each other, whether it be playing games, participating in Drawing Club, the lego creations, reading and discussing books or simply hanging out and chatting with friends. As the Director of Junior School, it is rewarding seeing students being inclusive and developing friendships.
The students drew inspiration from illustrators and their favourite things to create a bookmark

Welcome back to Term 3. I hope everyone had a wonderful break despite the weather. You would have received your son’s Semester 1 report at the end of last term. Sitting down as a family and reflecting on all the achievements and areas for improvement is so important for your son’s growth.
It is now a great opportunity to set SMART goals with your son after reflecting on the Semester One report. Moving into Semester 2, they have the opportunity to reach further and achieve more in their learning.
Below is the Curriculum Overview for Term 3 so you can see what your son will be learning in the classroom. It is clearly set out so that you can see the subject and the topics being taught across the curriculum.

With a performance date less than three weeks away, the Junior School Wakakirri cast are turning up the heat. Our item this year is Oliver! but instead of simply presenting the classic tale from Charles Dickens, our junior boys are performing a very modern re-telling of the story.
Our Oliver does indeed get more – more devices, more screen time, more games and more wins. In fact, he gets so immersed in his digital world that he pushes away all of his friends. He soon finds that he is in a very lonely place and some of the characters he meets there are very nasty. Eventually he finds a way to leave his digital world and rebuild his lost friendships.
In Wakakirri, the boys have seven minutes on stage to present a story that has a positive impact on the world. I am very confident that our cast does just that. Our soundtrack includes music from Imagine Dragons, Queen and Robbie Williams along with some original tracks from online gaming.
This year we are also projecting digital scenery as part of our performance which fits in really well with our theme. Our performance is at NIDA on Thursday, 11 August and I wish all the boys involved a wonderful experience on stage.

It was disappointing to have all games cancelled (except one) over the weekend, but we’re looking forward to clear weather for Round 9 and the recommencement of the winter season sport.
I would like to applaud and acknowledge the 10As Rugby team. They were the only team who played last Saturday at Terrey Hills, and it happened to be horrible conditions. Impressively, the team didn’t let it get to them, and they went out and fully embraced the opportunity, coming away massive 50-point winners!
10As Rugby … mud, mud, glorious mud!
I know families may have been less than impressed with the amount of mud when returning home, but congratulations for your determination and grit. It’s great to see.
Please follow the link below to ensure you are up to date with any changes to fixtures for Round 9 (Saturday, 30 July). Do keep a close eye on the Waverley College app for any further adjustments.
As the season is coming to an end, we enter a period of rest and rejuvenation as Term 3 progresses. This period is held for the athletics season in the Junior and Senior school combined.
Once the Junior School Athletics Carnival is completed, students who make it through to IPSHA Athletics, and any other students who were considered close to making the IPSHA Athletics team, will be invited to begin training with the senior Athletics teams.
This will be undertaken with the experienced coaches and senior athletes, which is a fantastic opportunity for our Junior students to learn and develop at a faster rate in both Track & Field events in the lead up to the IPSHA Athletics Carnival on Monday, 29 August.
The Athletics season runs from Monday, 8 August to Saturday, 10 September. Students chosen to be involved in the Athletics season will be informed and provided with further information around days and times of training. Students who don’t fall into this category will be given a break from sport.
Training for the second half of the Summer Co-Curricular season will recommence in Weeks 9 and 10 of Term 3, with games beginning at the start of Term 4. During the break from sport, students will still have the Athletics Carnival and FunRun to look forward to.
All Junior School Winter Co-Curricular sports will be having a presentation night as organised and run by the Senior School sport association committees and convenors.
Due to limited attendance numbers allocated for each Presentation Night, Junior School students who have been informed that they are receiving an award will be invited to attend the Presentation Night for their selected sport.
Students who are winning an award will be informed of this next week (Week 3) and more information will be sent out to the families.
The FunRun Fundraiser has seen some amazing achievements within the first week of the fundraising period. One week into the event, I’ll thrilled to share the following milestones reached:
The Junior School is unbelievably impressed by the level of commitment students have displayed, and we cannot wait to see how they progress leading up to the big FunRun event.
We thank all families for being on board and we further encourage you to spread the message far and wide, explaining the causes we’re fundraising for, and the meaning behind each chosen charity.
The three major charities that will evenly share the total amount of money raised for the School FunRun Big Show event include:
The Sydney Children’s Hospital Foundation | The Children’s Hospital cares for kids from Bondi to Blacktown, from Bronte to Bourke, touching the lives of every community across New South Wales and beyond. The Sydney Children’s Hospital Foundation’s policy is to ensure that every donation specified to a particular medical discipline or service is directed accordingly. Donations which are not specified are directed to the area of greatest need at the Hospital, as determined by the Hospital Management Committee, and approved by the Board of the Foundation, who acknowledge that donor expectation is that donations will support children’s medical care and wellbeing. Each year the demand on the Hospital to replace or buy the newest equipment and fund medical research grows, as do the number of children we care for. In addition to inpatient services, over 200,000 treatments are given to children through Emergency and Outpatient Clinics.

Starlight
Children’s Foundation |
The Starlight Children’s Foundation is a not-for-profit organisation founded in 1982 for hospitalised children and their families. Starlight programs offer entertainment, education and technology to critically, chronically and terminally-ill children.
Starlight receives no government funding so relies solely on the generous support of individuals, the community and our corporate partners. Give happiness to sick kids, teens and their families at a time when they need it most. Website: https://www.starlight.org.au/ |
Children’s Leukaemia & Cancer Foundation | Australia has one of the highest incidences of childhood cancer worldwide. One in 500 Australian children will develop cancer before 15 years of age. Childhood cancer is the single greatest cause of death from disease in Australian children, with three children losing their lives to cancer every week. The quest to find cures for childhood cancer is one of medicine’s greatest success stories. 50 years ago, only two per cent of children with cancer survived. Medical research alone has improved overall survival rates to 80 per cent. With childhood cancer still the leading cause of death from disease in Australian children, there is more work to be done.
The Foundation relies on the generous support of the community to continue its vital research, as they do not receive State or Federal funding. Website: https://childcancerresearch.com.au/ |

Marcus Strbac participated in the NSW AFL PSSA training camp in Barooga, border of NSW & VIC. The boys participated in daily training 9-3pm. The days were based around training, skills and drills, individual and team challenges, game plan, mini games, recovery sessions and education. On Tuesday the boys played the U14’s local footy team Barooga Hawks under the lights winning 72-2.
Congratulations to Marcus for making it into the NSW State AFL Team.
In the school holidays Dexter Francis (Year 6) competed in the Interschools ski and snowboard regional competitions in Perisher. The Interschools competition is a fantastic event where over 2500 kindergarten to year 12 children, from over 350 schools across Australia compete across a number of different skiing and snowboarding disciplines.
Dexter competed in Division 4 where he received a gold medal for coming first in Snowboard Cross, silver medal for Snowboard Giant Slalom, and placed 12th in moguls, 15th for Skier Cross and 18th for Alpine – an incredible achievement for a first attempt, especially without any race training.
Dexter will progress to the NSW State Championships for Snowboard Cross, Snowboard GS, Moguls and Skier Cross where he will join Rory Palmer (Year 5) and Patrick Palmer (Year 7) who will be competing in Alpine, Skier Cross and Moguls having prequalified for the NSW State Championships.
Waverley has a number of boys who represented the U11s Randwick rep team at the NSW State Gala last weekend.
U11 Greens won 4 from 6
U11 Whites won 5 from 6
Congratulations to the following boys for their involvement: Talin Opai, Louis Coleman, Joseph Di Blasio, Charlie Meynell, Hugo Cummins, Henry Callen, Hunter Leondis, Jackson MacAskill, Kalan Fisher, Samuel Powell, Jacob Roorda (was missing from the photo)
A further congratulations to the Waverley boys that represented Randwick in the U10s, including Will Thompson & Oliver Burke and anyone else missed.
We will be holding the School Fun Run as a major fundraising event this year on Friday, 26 August! We’re doing it to raise much needed money for the following charities linked to the annual Walkathon Fundraiser event that has been running for close to 30 years at the Junior School:
The Sydney Children’s Hospital Foundation |
Starlight Children’s Foundation |
Children’s Leukaemia & Cancer |
The School Fun-Run BIG SHOW is all about Fun! There will be huge inflatables, and you will get to meet Chase the Cheetah! Think of it as a Fun Run carnival! This will be one of the most exciting days on our school’s calendar, with everyone’s participation the aim, so please make sure they attend on the day and cheer the other kids on!
Firstly, go to schoolfunrun.com.au and create a student profile page. Everything to do with your fundraising revolves around this page. Students have also been given a booklet with a QR code to help with the sign-up process, which needs to be done by the parents/ carers.
Students who raise just $10 will be able to choose a prize! The more they raise, the better their reward – don’t forget to check these out in the sponsorship form! We have educated students on the dangers of doorknocking without supervision, and we encourage you to reiterate this at home. The great thing about online fundraising is that you can share the link to your child’s profile with friends and family via email, SMS and Social Media.
The easiest way to help your child raise money is through online fundraising, where students raise an average of $120. On top of raising more money, it’s also safer and easier than door knocking and you don’t have to worry about handling money! To start fundraising online, go to your student profile page at schoolfunrun.com.au and share your online fundraising link.

Please find below key event dates you need to be aware of for the Junior School in Term 3. For all of the College events, please refer to the College calendar.
I would like to take the opportunity to thank the staff, students and families of the Junior School for a wonderful Term 2. As a community, we have supported each other through staff and student absences brought about by COVID-19 and the flu season, and I thank our community for working together through this.
It has been fantastic to see our school come alive with COVID-19 restrictions easing. We were able to invite families back to the school grounds this week for our Year 5 and Year 6 History and Science Showcases. There was a buzz throughout the school, having our community back together. Well done to all the students on their projects, I know a lot of work was put into these and they were all very impressive.
I have also enjoyed the easing of the rain as of late, knowing our boys are participating in physical exercise and team sports. It is important for the boys’ mental health to limit devices over the holiday period, and ensure they exercise and spend time outside.
I know many families are travelling long distances to see family over the holidays or taking a long-awaited family trip. I wish everyone safe travels and if you are staying at home, enjoy the break with your sons.

Year 6 have been exploring the development of the ‘migration story’ in Australia. Their inquiry research task required them to retrace the migration story of a family member or friend, and then put their creativity to work to make a digital visual representation of this story using iMovie.
Students presented their research and knowledge via the ‘Waves of Migration’ Showcase in the playground, and invited friends and family to visit.
What an incredible day. The innovative student stalls displayed fascinating artefacts, historical information, home-cooked food and primary sources. The obvious time, effort and thoughtfulness that each student had put into their display, indicated deep engagement with the topic.
Each boy was creatively dressed as their chosen family member or friend, and eloquently engaged in conversations with visitors about their learning. Can you recognise your family member or friend?
Alongside their history research, Year 6 presented their ‘Future Food Project’ via student-made brochures, posters and Google Slide Presentations. They presented their learnings about various foods and their production, and how sustainable they might be in the future. Different presentations showcased the sustainability of wheat, pork, sugar, beef, salmon and milk.
It was a really stimulating day for students, families and friends, with conversation, sharing of knowledge, and friendship. What a happy way to end Term 2!

On Sunday, 19 June, a small group of students from Waverley College celebrated the Sacrament of Confirmation at Mary Immaculate Church in Waverley. This was their final Sacrament of Initiation, confirming their commitment to Christ and the Catholic faith.
We thank Father Bernie for sharing this special celebration with the boys and for making it a memorable occasion. A special thanks to Ms Jennifer Hoare and Ms Sue Walsh for assisting with the organisation of the Sacrament in my absence.
Congratulations to all the other students within the Junior School who have celebrated their Sacrament of Confirmation in their local parishes.

I’d personally like to wish all students and families a much deserved Winter break. It has been a busy term of Co-Curricular Sport, and I’d like to thank parents and carers for their ongoing support towards your son’s involvement and commitment to training and games. It has been a great season so far, and we all look forward to finishing off the Winter Season at the beginning of Term 3.
A big thank you to all the coaches and convenors for their commitment to ensuring our boys all get the best out of themselves and their team. It’s a pleasure to see all teams working together, building camaraderie each week, regardless of the final results.
I’d also like to wish the best of luck to both Mr Alon Horry (Prep 2nds Rugby Coach) and Ms Chloe Valkin (10As Football Coach).
Mr Horry is looking forward to some much deserved time away overseas, and will hopefully be returning to us at the end of Term 3. He has been an excellent coach for the team and has had a massive impact, week after week.
Chloe has accepted a Football scholarship to study and play in America professionally. She has truly developed this 10As team and it has been amazing to see their growth because of her coaching. You’re both going to be missed for the remainder of the season, but we wish you the best of luck in your journeys.

The time and day of this new session will be announced at the beginning of Week 1 to commence in Week 2.

Last Thursday, 9 June, Junior School students participated in the Annual Edmund Rice Activity Day. Throughout the morning, the boys learnt about the life of Edmund Rice through a variety of activities, including trivia, research projects and a prayer service.
Awards were presented throughout the day for students who demonstrate the same qualities of Edmund Rice, such as kindness, compassion, humility and a desire to put others first.
Congratulations to the following students:
These 12 boys demonstrate Edmund Rice’s qualities of kindness, compassion, humility and a desire to put others first
During the afternoon, the boys were involved in a number of different fundraising activities, aimed at raising money to go towards Edmund Rice Camps. There was a buzz of excitement around the school as the majority of the boys immersed themselves in the different games. I am proud to say that over $1,500 was raised. Well done to all boys for their efforts.

Please follow the link below to ensure you are up to date with any changes to fixtures for Round 7 (Saturday, 18 June). Keep a close eye on the Waverley College app for any further adjustments.
Last round, our Prep 1st Rugby team had the privilege of facing off against their biggest arch rivals, Scots on Queens Park 1 main field. This was special, considering the last game scheduled for the team to play on Queens Park 1 was unfortunately washed out. It is always a big occasion playing Scots, but this had a different energy for both teams on a crisp, blue-skied Sydney winter’s day.
As expected, it was a nail-biter of a game, going down to the final minutes where Waverley were able to swing the ball wide to secure the final try, and the win, by 4 points. As you can imagine, the boys were ecstatic, and to achieve this on the main field was an added reward for a hard-fought game.
Well done boys, you were very deserving, and it was great to see you get the win.
Hunter Bligh and Lachlan Bayly made it to the National Junior Basketball Classic Tournament in Melbourne over the long weekend with their rep team. It’s a big achievement for these boys, as it’s an ‘invite only’ tournament with only the best teams in Australia competing.
The boys finished in 10th overall, which is a huge achievement. This means their team is in the top 10 best U12 team in Australia. Congratulations to both Hunter and Lachlan, it’s excellent to see you both achieve big things in basketball.
Hunter and Lachlan – National Junior Basketball Classics
The Queen’s Birthday long weekend saw 18 teams from all around NSW, (and even one Melbourne team), head to Camden for the U12s Rugby State Championship – their first state tournament, having missed competing in the U10s and U11s due to COVID-19.
The following Year 6 students were selected to represent the Randwick district: Lukas Pendleton (captain), Riley Carr, Vaidas Levi, Morgan Turinui, Beau Matheson-Raynor, Byron Thomas and Zac Johnson. The team also included Year 7 students Junior Pohiva and Duke Thomas.
The team were up against some very tough opposition in the tournament, and were praised by the officials for playing in the true spirit of rugby. They had an amazing time, formed long-lasting friendships, and thoroughly enjoyed Camden’s country hospitality.
Ben Fernandes was also selected to play for Penrith Rugby Club and compete against his other close friends and classmates. Congratulations to Ben and all the Waverley boys who were selected and involved in the competition over the long weekend.

The students in 6 Indigo have been extremely busy working through a number of different projects through the term. They are excitedly preparing for the upcoming History/Science Showcase next week.
Some of the interesting things that they have been working on include:
The students were asked to work in groups of two or three to create a podcast based around the book that we were studying in class, Young Dark Emu, by Bruce Pascoe. This book gives us a different and truer insight into the Indigenous way of life, based on excerpts of early explorers’ diaries.
Students were asked to analyse parts of the book, and reflect on their own interpretations in a fun and meaningful way.
Would you like to hear some of these student-created podcasts? Just use your camera to scan the QR code at the bottom of each image below.
The boys in 6 Indigo have been exploring the different factors that attributed to Australia’s migration story. This has led to their current inquiry research task, where they are busy retracing the migration story of a family member or friend, to create a digital visual representation of this story through I-Movie.
We are greatly looking forward to watching the final productions.
Through our Science topic this term, students have been learning about different foods, how they are produced, and how sustainable they will be in the future. They were given an opportunity to present their research task either as a brochure, poster or Google Slide Presentation. You can see some of their work in the images below, however they will also be on full display during the Year 6 History/Science Showcase on Wednesday, 22 June at 2pm.
As part of their Visual Arts lessons, the boys worked collaboratively to build Box Monsters out of recyclable materials. A lot of creativity was put into the designs and a lot of fun was piecing together the final product. Enjoy the images below!
It certainly has been a busy semester. I look forward to seeing how the 6 Indigo students’ learnings continue to grow throughout the remainder of the year.

I personally would like to thank all of the parents who allowed their son to support any sports team that was struggling for numbers last weekend. I would especially like to thank the students for offering themselves to help teams who were unable to secure a full side, due to students being sick or playing at the OzTag tournament.
The Junior School was missing large numbers, and this had a ripple effect on all the U11 Rugby teams. However, you wouldn’t have known! The results demonstrated that regardless of this loss of numbers, our spirit, teamwork and camaraderie shone through.

To celebrate National Reconciliation Week, 5 White engaged in many fun activities that taught us about the history and culture of Australia’s First Nations People. Our favourite lesson was Aboriginal Art Therapy.
We used watercolour paints and pastel crayons to create an art piece that reflected our feelings, thoughts and emotions in the moment. The joy of listening to music by Indigenous artist Scott Darlow, and moving to it freely while making marks on the paper, was therapeutic and mesmerising.
In this lesson, we were asked to choose an Indigenous Hero and conduct research about their upbringing, career, goals and achievements. Our chosen Indigenous Hero was Patty Mills. We then created an informative poster and shared our new learning with our peers.

As a friendly reminder, we do not have any games scheduled over the June long weekend, and our final round for Term 2 will be on Saturday, 18 June.
Marcus Strbac and William Frinsdorf were selected in the CISNSW team to represent IPSHA and Waverley College in Coffs Harbour across a four-day tournament.
The overall tournament experience was special for the boys. Over the tournament, the CIS team was undefeated, with both Marcus and Will taking turns in playing in the mid, back and forward line. The boys came up against some hard, tough and muddy footy, but they just worked hard as a team to win every game.
The scoreboard demonstrated the team’s dominance (53-0, 57-19, 54-0). On Friday in the Finals against Sydney North, they got a win (39-7), taking home the big trophy.
Marcus Strbac was also selected to represent the NSW AFL team, which is an incredible achievement. Over 300 kids played and 23 were selected into the team. Waverley is extremely proud of both students, and looks forward to hearing how Marcus progresses in the AFL NSW team.
Congratulations Marcus Strbac

Year 5
This term in PE, Year 5 classes have been focusing on Game Design as part of their major practical assessment task. In groups of two to three, students were to design an initiative game that incorporates key locomotor movement skills, and rules from one chosen invasion sport.
The game needed to be a modified version of that chosen sport, but could not be the same.
Groups used a wide variety of PE equipment in class, to create their game. Once completed, groups were asked to teach their game to other small groups, to play during practical lessons. The game’s rules and objectives needed to be evenly explained in detail, as a group.
All students have gained such enjoyment and group leadership skills along the way.
Year 5 Practical Assessment Task
Year 5 Practical Assessment Task
Year 6
Year 6 students undertook an integrated gymnastics assessment task. This meant that there was both a theory and practical component to be completed. With a partner, students had to design an online poster that showcased six movement sequences, combining simple gymnastics, balancing and body shape positions. They were required to include the name of each movement, an image of the movements, and a detailed description of how each is performed.
Students then used these movement sequences to create a short routine to be performed in front of the class, during one practical lesson lasting 40 seconds. The routine needed to be creative, show fluidity, and be engaging to the audience. Students, although quite resistant at the beginning, genuinely made the most of the task, and displayed passion and interest in their performances.

Our students gained experience in a vital life skill – Public Speaking. Presenting to an audience can be nerve-wracking, but utilising newly-learned techniques, each student presented an engaging speech.
The boys researched and planned their speeches while learning how to present and use gestures, inject humour, make eye contact, refer to palm cards, and use voice projection to enhance the quality of their presentation.
The heats in their Learning Hub sessions created a hum of excitement, and it was clear that all students were highly engaged in this initiative.
Winners were chosen and progressed to the school finals on Monday, 30 May. The six finalists took it all in their stride, and stepped up confidently to deliver their speeches once again.
Our adjudicators Mr Robert Tall and Lachlan Marzol (Year 9 student) had a torturous decision to make, as the standard and quality of all competitors was so high.
Congratulations to our finalists and our Public Speaking Champion 2022, Byron Thomas.

This week, the students drew inspiration from one of our guest speakers Ms Maakrun, and her love of drawing cartoons. We focused on adding as much detail as we could, over a lunchtime. Then, to bring our cartoon to life, we added watercolour paints. These two characters were created over lunch. Well done Harvey Smith and Dash McDonough.
