CAS Round 5 Vs Trinity Grammar School

Waverley College played against Trinity Grammar last weekend in the final fixture of the season. On the day, from the 15 matches played against Trinity, Waverley managed to win a total of 14. A near perfect way to complete the season.

1st XV Match

The 1st XV match was an entertaining match with both sides throwing the ball around. Waverley proved to be too good on the day and the Double V got to finish the season with one final ‘Custard Pie.’

It was a special day for all our Year 12 students who played their final match in the Blue and Gold Jersey. Pleasingly, all our Opens teams secured enjoyable victories under sunny skies – which was a welcome change to the wet conditions we felt throughout the 2022 season.

We thank all our Year 12 players for their efforts in representing Waverley College. We also thank all the parents and carers for the wonderful support they gave Waverley College on the sidelines for many years.

Final Round of Winter Activities for 2022

This weekend marks the final round of Winter Activities for 2022. Debating, however, will continue for another three rounds including this Friday. I also want to mention the impressive efforts of all of our Debating Teams and coaches last Friday evening, and the notable win by our Firsts team.

Indigenous Round Connecting Community

Thank you to all of the staff involved in the hard work behind the scenes for setting up an impressive Indigenous Round last weekend. Well done to all 1sts teams for representing the College to a very high standard, and also thank you to all of the families and members of the College community who took part in the celebrations.

Special mention to Uncle Dean Kelly and the other Elders who made the ceremonies so special. We will continue to celebrate this round each year, and continue to work with our Indigenous brothers and sisters for reconciliation, and ensuring future generations recognise the mistakes of the past so we can move forward as one people.

Track & Field Season Commencement

With this round being the final round of winter activities, we will commence our Track & Field season next Monday. The Track & Field guide has been posted on the College website and that highlights the training schedule as well as timings for events each Saturday.

All students are strongly encouraged to participate and any student is welcome to be a part of this squad. We have not been able to run Track & Field for two years due to COVID-19, and are very much looking forward to running this great activity again this year.

For those not participating in Athletics, our summer pre-season will commence later this term.

Please also note that this is the final week of Summer Activity change for Years 7-11, but there are also a number of selections that are now full.

Congratulations Henry Paterson (Class of 2014)

Special mention also to Henry Paterson (Class of 2014) who was playing for the Australian Men’s Rugby 7s at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. Henry scored a try in the Bronze medal playoff against New Zealand.

Heartfelt Thanks

I want to thank all of the parents and carers who assist with various duties each week, especially in the canteen and on the BBQ at Queens Park. We would not be able to run our activities without your support.

I also want to thank all of the Year 12 students who will be playing their final round of winter sport this weekend. I wish you well for the continuation of your Trials.

I hope we have many students and members of the College community down to support again this week, and I remind all students they have to be appropriately attired and acting in a respectful manner.

I also want to mention all of the Convenors and coaches who have worked so hard over another challenging and weather-impacted season.

We do have Football and AFL presentation evenings at the College next Friday, followed by Rugby down at Easts Rugby the week after.

CAS Round 4 Vs Barker College

Waverley College played against Barker College last weekend in Round 4 of the CAS competition. On the day, from the 15 matches played against Barker College, Waverley managed to win a total of 12 matches. A terrific result.

The 1st XV match was a physical encounter and both sides gave everything for their school. Barker proved to be too good on the day but the Double V can walk away with their heads held high.

CAS Round 5 Vs Trinity Grammar – Final Round for the Winter Sport Season

This weekend marks the end of the 2022 winter sport season. Waverley College meets Trinity Grammar in what is becoming the traditional final round fixture. Our 13s, 16s and Opens play at Queens Park with our 14s and 15s playing over at Summer Hill.

We thank all players for their efforts this season and hope you finish on a high note. We particularly thank our Year 12 boys who play their final round of representative sport for Waverley College this weekend. It would be great to get a big crowd at Queens Park to cheer on our seniors as they run out in the ‘Blue and Gold’ jersey one final time.

QP Canteen and BBQ Support – Final Week!

The Rugby Supporters’ Club are looking for any parents, carers and friends of students in the 13s, 16s and Opens age groups who would be able to assist on the canteen and BBQ for the final game of the season.

We are currently recruiting students to participate in the College’s Surf Lifesaving Program. This is a standalone Summer co-curricular option available to students turning 15 by the end of the year and older. The program will begin in Term 4 and will continue in Term 1, 2023.

Students will complete their Bronze Medallion in Term 4, before being assigned patrols for Term 1, 2023. While the normal cost of a Bronze Medallion course at Bondi is $500 per club member, this program will be charged at approximately $300 given the use of school facilities and teacher support.

Please note that all students must be able to swim 400m in nine minutes or less, as part of their successful completion of the Bronze Medallion course.

Bronze Medallion

Bronze Medallion

We are fortunate to have access to Sydney’s iconic Bondi Beach, and all SLSC students will become members of the Bondi Surf Bathers’ Lifesaving Club, one of Australia’s oldest surf clubs. If students are currently members of another surf club, they are able to retain that existing membership in addition to joining Bondi.

Unfortunately, the weather played its part again last Saturday with many fixtures washed out. Thank you to those parents and students that did attend those fixtures that were on, particularly those that were at Oakhill

There were still some notable absences and we will be following up with those students this week. We have two more rounds left in the season for winter and so all students need to ensure that they are meeting their commitments over the next two weeks. This includes Year 12.

Indigenous Round this Saturday, 30 July 2022

This coming Saturday, Waverley College will be celebrating our Indigenous Round with all 1sts teams wearing their Indigenous-designed strip. We have a number of invited guests and the upstairs area of the Pavilion at Queens Park will be inaccessible after 2pm for everyone else.

We also have a number of formal procedures for the day to recognise the importance of this round, and we hope that as many members of the wider College community are able to come and attend, as well as support these activities.

Codes of Conduct Reminder

I also want to remind all members of the College community about Codes of Conduct and expectations when attending sporting events.

All students need to act appropriately and be fully attired in College sporting attire or uniform.

All spectators also need to act appropriately. We will have members of the NSW Police Force and security guards in attendance, who will remove any person who is intoxicated or not meeting the required Codes of Conduct.

Requests for Change in Summer Activities

Any student in Years 7-11 who wishes to request a change in their summer activities will need to come and see Mr Wilmot or myself before the end of Week 3 this term.

Not every request will be able to be accommodated and there are a couple of activities, including Basketball and Touch Football, that are already oversubscribed for most age groups.

I understand that this may be disappointing for some students, but we have limited facilities and these sports already have big numbers. We need to ensure that all students are able to get as much playing and training time as possible and there are a number of other activities that are available.

CAS Round 3 Vs Cranbrook – 1st XV Match Report

Waverley College made the short trip to Rose Bay to take on the neighbouring Cranbrook School in Round 3 of the CAS Competition. The conditions were abysmal with plenty of rain in the week leading into the fixture, creating extremely sloppy conditions on the playing field.

Waverley kicked off and, on securing early possession, made their intentions clear to keep the ball in hand. Cranbrook defended well and managed to counter very effectively once they had their hands on the ball. This eventually led the home side scoring the first try of the match following some strong work by the Cranbrook Hooker near the ruck.

Waverley hit back soon after with some impressive running from Dane Towns who linked up nicely with Tino Jahnke-Tavana. Tino kicked the ball through and Solomon Tuqiri was first to get there, to score an entertaining try, which breathed some life into the match.

The kicking game from both sides was very important given the conditions. Caleb Sinclair-Harris and Dane Towns did great jobs getting Waverley out of trouble and putting the Double V into attacking positions. While both teams had their chances, the scores remained level for a majority of the first half.

In the dying minutes of the first half, Sinclair-Harris was able to put Dane Towns in space out wide. Towns drew in three defenders and at the same time found a charging Jonti Morshead-Feildel who raced away to score in the corner.

Down to the final play in the first half, Sinclair-Harris planted the ball deep in the Cranbrook half. A charge down from Waverley’s big No 8 Noah Tofaeono would see the ball land in the hands of Tuqiri who scored his second try under the sticks. At halftime, Waverley led 19 to 7.

The Waves started the half well with some strong work from Tom Martin, AJ Preketes, Ethan Halatokoua and Charlie Alexander who all tried to build momentum for the Double V. Ky Pule and Ben Finegan also had some excellent carries.

A clever dart from Tuqiri off the back of the ruck found some scattered Cranbrook defence. Tuqiri was able to offload to Cooper Stynes who threw a great pass to Noah Toefaono. Noah charged down the field to score a well-deserved try. Waverley now up 26-7 but with plenty of time remaining on the clock.

Waverley’s discipline started to let them down and soon they were reduced to 14 men. Cranbrook capitalised on this with a driving maul which resulted in a penalty try following an infringement for collapsing.

Handling errors were starting to increase in frequency. While holding a lead, this seemed to frustrate the Double V. The home crowd also did start to come into play and the momentum shifted to Cranbrook. The Cranbrook openside flanker capitalised on this momentum by going over to collect a try. Only 5 points now separated the two sides. The excitement of schoolboy rugby!

Cranbrook continued to build more and more pressure. More poor discipline hurt Waverley and gave Cranbrook an easy ride up field. Cranbrook shifted the ball to the left edge and a try was scored in the corner. The conversion from the sideline was missed. The scores were now level at 26-26.

Five minutes remained on the clock as Waverley kicked off. The Cranbrook flanker knocked the ball on and this gave Waverley a huge opportunity to edge back in front. Unfortunately, the handling errors continued and really hurt Waverley at the end. The full-time whistle was blown and the crowd went silent. 26-26 draw.

Congratulations to both sides for an entertaining fixture. All spectators from both schools were certainly on the edge of their seats for the entire match. The game did bring plenty excitement to a dull day – well done to all players involved.

Around the Grounds

As a result of the wet weather, a majority of the fixtures were cancelled for the day due to the ground conditions. We did have the 2nd XV match as the only other match to be played against Cranbrook. The 2nd XV just went down by a point in a very close encounter. As well as this match, we did have a number of the 14s and 13s teams who travelled to play Oakhill. We thank all the players and parents who made the long journey out to Castle Hill.

It was disappointing to receive reports regarding a number of players in the 14s age group failing to attend the fixtures at Oakhill without notice. Thank you to those players and parents who did reach out to notify the College that they were unwell (providing the required medical certificate). Rugby is a team sport and not only is it disappointing for the playing group when teams are left short, but it also negatively impacts the opposition team and spectators.

Upcoming Schedule

Please note that this weekend, Waverley College will play CAS Round 4 against Barker College. This will be a special occasion at Queens Park as it will be Indigenous Round. It would be great to have plenty of spectators to support this special event.

Our teams in the 14s and 15s will be playing away (Hornsby) while our 13s, 16s and Opens will be playing at Queens Park. Barker College do not match up with all our teams, so a number of teams will be playing a variety of schools. For those playing at Hornsby, please allow plenty of time to travel as the traffic can be extremely busy on Saturdays.

Next week will be the final week of training for the winter sport season. Players are all expected to attend the final sessions in the lead into our final match of the year against Trinity Grammar School.

As a note, our 14s and 15s age groups will be playing at Summer Hill, while our 13s, 16s and Opens will have their final match at Queens Park.

Track & Field

Following the winter season, we would certainly encourage and love to see all rugby players involved in the Track & Field team. Led by Mr Jeremy Roff, it is an exciting team in which to be involved, and there are certainly events for students of all shapes and sizes.

Queens Park Canteen and BBQ Support

The Rugby Supporters’ Club are looking for any parents, carers and friends of students in the 13s, 16s and Opens age groups who would be able to assist on the canteen and BBQ over the final two Saturdays of the season. Any support, even for a period of one hour, would be very much appreciated.

Rugby Report

Welcome Back!

I would like to welcome all members of the Waverley College Community back to Term 3. I hope that all families had a terrific holiday break and were able to spend some quality time together. We only have three rounds of rugby remaining for the 2022 season – a season which I cannot remember ever seeing so much wet weather. Fingers crossed we can finish off the season on a high note with plenty of sunshine!

CAS Round 3 Vs Cranbrook

This weekend Waverley College will play against Cranbrook School in Round 3 of the CAS Competition. This fixture is always an entertaining one against our neighbours from Bellevue Hill. Please note that some of our 13s and 14s teams will be travelling to play Oakhill College as Cranbrook do not match up with all grades in these age group. We wish our travelling teams all the best as well as, of course, those teams playing in the Eastern Suburbs.

Training Schedule

Please note that all players will be expected at training for the remaining three weeks of the season. A reminder that 13s, 14s and 15s will train on Monday and Wednesday, with the 16s and Opens training on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Please be aware that there will be no training on Monday 25th July due to the scheduled Parent/Teacher/Student Interviews which will be running for the full day.

We are also mindful of our Year 12 students who will be completing the HSC Trials which commence in Week 3. While Year 12 students will not have classes, training will be on as scheduled on Tuesday and Thursday. We are mindful of and certainly support any students who may have exam commitments on those days.

Thank you and well done to all students, staff and coaches for your efforts at Term 2 co-curricular activities. Waverley students continue to perform well in a number of areas, with many also representing Waverley and CAS teams this week and into the holidays.

I want to make special mention of our Year 10 Debating team who are now through to the finals of the CSDA debating season, and we wish them and their coaches all the best.

Unfortunately, we have had to postpone our House Track & Field Carnival to Monday, 29 August due to the ongoing capital works at ES Marks Athletics Field. More information about this event will be published early in Term 3.

1sts Teams Learn From Mr Kevin Heath (Waverley College Indigenous Liaison Officer) and Uncle Dean Kelly (Bidgigal Elder)

This week, we also had all of our 1sts teams spend some time with Mr Kevin Heath and Uncle Dean Kelly. The boys worked on the importance of identity, and improving cultural awareness and understanding before our Indigenous Round on Saturday, 30 July. This ensures that all 1sts teams have a better appreciation of what the round means, its relevance, and why they are wearing the ‘specially designed’ 1sts attire.

CAS Round 2 vs Knox Grammar School – 1st XV Match Report

Waverley College travelled to Wahroonga for the 2nd round of the CAS competition, for an important match against Knox Grammar School. Both sides remained undefeated going into the final fixture of Term 2, and the pre-season form indicated that there would not be too much separating both sides.

The conditions were perfect for rugby, with a dry pitch and not too much of a breeze to report. Waverley set their intentions early by keeping the ball in hand, and rumbling the ball forward. Knox did well to pull down barnstorming runs from Ky Pule and AJ Preketes.

Knox managed to work their way out of trouble, and secured some good field position. This eventually led to a try to the home side. Unfortunately, Ben Finegan was forced off the field to the blood bin, and the Double V were under early pressure.

The Waves responded well, and worked hard to get into a point-scoring position. A strong run from Captain Preketes had Waverley camped right on the goal line, and Ethan Halatokoua used his strength to crash over the line. Soon after, a cheeky kick behind the line into space from Tom Martin, followed by a charge down by Charles Alexander, had Noah Tofaeono in for another Waverley try.

It did not take long for Knox to come back, as they found space down the left edge of the field. Waverley looked like regaining the lead as the Knox defensive line began to tire. However, the Knox winger managed to pluck the ball from the air, and race away to score a 100m intercept try.

The match became a great battle as both teams tried and tried to find a way to score. Waverley elected to take the three points on offer, as half-time approached. Both teams looked exhausted, but there was a feeling in the air that this encounter would take the full 70 minutes to decide who the winner would be. At the break, Knox were in front 19-17.

Well done to Noah Tofaeno, Solomon Tuqiri, Jonti Morshead Fiedel, Ethan Halatokoua, AJ Preketes, Ky Pule and Tino Jahnke-Tavana who represented Waverley College in the CAS 1sts and 2nds Rugby this week

Knox extended their lead early in the second half, finding a weakness in the Waverley defensive line down the right-side edge of the field. A dashing run from Jonti Morshead-Feildel set up a try for his centre partner, Solomon Tuqiri, to put the Double V one try away to regaining the lead.

The kicking game from both teams became a focus as the match progressed into the second half. Some precision kicking from Caleb Sinclair-Harris and Dane Towns had the Waves back into a scoring position. Tom Martin was able to find a gap just behind the ruck to take Waverley to the front. The score now 29 to 26 in favour of the visitors. Plenty of time remained on the clock.

Waverley went close to scoring again through young Kahu Capper on the wing, however, he was called offside. This penalty put Knox back into a position they wanted to be in. Waverley managed to get the ball back, but as they looked to exit, Knox charged down the clearing kick and the ball fell into the hands of the Knox Hooker, who scored under the posts.

As the conditions became darker and darker, the field lights at Knox 1 came on. Knox held the lead, but Waverley threw everything at the home side. I think a kitchen sink was spotted at one point! In the end, it was the side from Wahroonga who held the 4-point margin to win the match. Congratulations to both sides on an entertaining encounter.

The CAS competition now goes on hold for the school holidays. Waverley will meet local rivals, Cranbrook, in Round 3 of the CAS competition. While the Double V might feel disappointed, the Henry Plume Shield is still within reach.

Rugby Ball

Around the Grounds

The Waverley vs Knox fixture was a terrific and very evenly-contested round of rugby. On the day, from the 17 matches played, both schools had eight wins, with the 14Bs match drawn, 5-5.

The Opens tried hard, but just went down in some tight matches. The 16As and 16Cs played matches which were enjoyable to watch, with the Bs just falling short of the win. The 15As had a gutsy three-point win, which was courageous, with a number of players out injured. The 14Cs were the stand outs in the 14s age group with a dominant victory, and the 13s teams again did extremely well.

Thank You

As we come to the end of Term 3, I thank all our parents, carers and friends who have helped create a welcoming atmosphere at Queens Park. Thank you for the numerous hours you have spent volunteering on the BBQ and Canteen.

Waverley Queens Park Canteen

I would like to highlight the efforts of Year 6 student and Prep 1st star, Charlie Gibbins, who kindly donated two hours of his own time to help out on the canteen. We very much appreciate your efforts and dedication to your school on and off the field!

During Term 2, selected Basketball students participated in the Winter Basketball program. This included a 3 x 3 style of training coached by Old Boy Mr Ryan Abbott, 1st V coach Mr Matthew Johnston, and Sydney 3 x 3 representative Mr Michael Golding.

The squad has undertaken an intensive training regime, and on Friday they were able to showcase their skills as they competed in a friendly tournament against The Scots College. It was held in the Br Lacey Gymnasium with music and action – packed games being played at every angle.

The senior tournament consisted of two pools with two Waverley teams and two Scots teams in each pool. Throughout the night, games were played with teams going at each other. After each team had played everyone in their pool, semi-finals saw the final four teams being Waverley players.

The Grand Final saw a Year 11 team facing off against a Year 10 team. The game went down to the wire, ending when Aren Yaghoubian drained a step-back three for the victorious win. The crowd then came rushing over surrounding him to celebrate his team’s victory, which included James Dyson Merwe, Aiden Pascoe and Eden Byrd.

The junior tournament had the same structure as the senior, with two pools, both with two Waverley and two Scots teams. These fast, intense games were fought hard, with every team winning and losing. When it came to the semi-final, Waverley once again came out on top, with three Waverley teams and one Scots team making it.

Once again, the Grand Final had two Waverley teams facing off against each other. One team consisted of a mix of year groups including two Year 10s, while the other team comprised four Year 8s. The junior Grand Final was another upset, with the younger underdog team beating the other Waverley team in a highly contested game. Congratulations to the following players for winning the junior tournament: Nico Palacio, Isaac Buchanan, Jonte Garvey and Noah Thomas.

Final thanks to Mr Matthew Johnston, Mr Michael Golding and Mr Anthony Gibbs and for help preparing this brilliant event. It was a great night for the boys.
