Last Friday, the Winter Basketball program hosted its first 3 X 3 round robin tournament against The Scots College. The players were split into teams and competed against both the Scots teams and each other. The competition included quarter-finals, semi-finals and a Grand Final at the end. Of the four pools, Waverley won two, and went into the quarter-finals as favourites.
High Performance Players in Action
During the quarter-finals, Waverley teams played outstandingly, managing to win every game against their Scots opponents, leaving just Waverley teams playing in the semi-finals. Some amazing performances from the younger groups of players in both the senior and junior competitions, saw both ending in upset wins against the favourites on the night, demonstrating that selflessness and playing for each other at the offensive and defensive ends, is critical to any team’s success, regardless of the talent of the group.

Thank you to Mr Golding and Mr Abbott for helping with the coaching of the program throughout Term 2, and to past 1st V players, Cameron Abbott and Hugo Roles for supporting and helping on the evening. It was also great to have the help from current senior players, Toby Longmire and Harrison Lee, with scoring on the night.
3 X 3 has been a really beneficial format for players to develop and challenge themselves in the off-season. We are looking forward to what happens in future years, as this format becomes more and more popular globally.

This week is the last round of winter activities for Term 2 against traditional rivals Knox Grammar School. Training for the final week of term will only be held on Monday and Tuesday.
Well done to all students who competed in the NSW State Rugby Championships last weekend, and especially to the Randwick U16 side captained by Oliver Aboud. This team were crowned premiers and had a large number of Waverley College students.

We would like to congratulate all our students involved in the State Championships last weekend. It was pleasing to hear the success stories and lifelong memories from a number of Waverley College students involved with various club teams. Well done!
This weekend, the final weekend of rugby for Term 2, Waverley College will have a big test against Knox Grammar School. Knox are always a wonderful competition across all age groups, and all our teams will need to be at their best for this encounter.
Our 13s, 16s and Opens will play at Knox, while our 14s and 15s will play at Queens Park.
For those travelling to Knox, it is important that you allow plenty of travel time, as the traffic heading up towards Knox on a Saturday can be busy. We do ask that all players ensure they arrive at least 30 minutes before kick-off. It certainly is disappointing to have players turn up 5 to 10 minutes before the game, as this can really interfere with the team preparations.
We would like to congratulate Jed Holloway (Waverley College Old Boy) for his selection in the Wallabies Squad for the upcoming series against England. Jed has had a terrific season with the NSW Waratahs, and this opportunity is very well deserved. We wish Jed all the very best.
In a different sporting code, we would also like to congratulate Ronald Volkman (Waverley College Old Boy) as he makes his NRL debut for the New Zealand Warriors this weekend. Ronald was part of the 2020 CAS Premiership team, scoring the winning try against Barker College.
On behalf of the Waverley College Rugby Community, we send our condolences to Mrs Maureen Andrews, Waverley College Supporters’ Club Secretary, and her family, following the passing of her beautiful mother last week. We send our love, thoughts and prayers to Mrs Andrews, and I know that all members of the community are right behind the family at this difficult time.

Last weekend saw our first full round of CAS fixtures for this winter. We had some impressive results as well as a few heartbreaking losses, as is the nature of schoolboy sport. It was great to see a number of players and staff ensuring enjoyment for all players, with good sportsmanship in many games.
Our next round of sport is on Saturday, 18 June against Knox Grammar, and this will be a season-defining round for many teams. As next week is a short week, we need to ensure all students are meeting their full requirements for training, in preparing for these matches.
Well done to all cast and crew for the Cosi production this week, which was a resounding success. Congratulations also to Ms Alison Jinga and Mr Peter Lamb for all their hard work in producing such a high-quality Drama showcase.
Congratulations to the 23 student pianists who bravely stepped up to the Piano Competition challenge in the PAC Recital Room this week. There were many excellent performances. Thank you to Ms Keiran Kossenberg, Mr Chris Balkizas, Ms Jaz Dolso and the music department, for their organisation of this annual event.

We have a number of students that continue to shine. Ryland Short and Will Heffernen (Year 12), have been selected as Australian and NSW Cycling representatives to travel to Europe, to compete for TWC Maaslandster Zuid-Limberg in the prestigious road race circuits. For these junior riders to achieve this is an amazing success, and we wish these young men well.

We had a number of students competing last week at the State Oz-Tag championships, including a very successful U13s team made up of a number of Waverley students. Well done to all students on their respective performances.

Unfortunately, we have recently been informed that ES Marks will not be ready for our scheduled house Athletics Carnival on 23 June. We are currently investigating alternatives, and will communicate an update as soon as we can.

Waverley College travelled across the bridge to take on St Aloysius’ College in the opening round of the 2022 Combined Associated Schools Competition. Pleasingly, the sun was shining over the College Oval, and a dry pitch meant that there would be no excuses for both teams to engage with some running rugby.
The whistle blew, and the home side, St Aloysius’, put the pressure on the visiting team. This early pressure coupled with a number of early penalties saw Aloysius’ go to the front, 6 points to 0.
A breeze behind the Double V in the first half, saw Waverley working to secure territory with some handy kicks downtown, from Caleb Sinclair-Harris and Dane Towns. Some handling errors from Waverley did see some early opportunities lost.
A dashing run by Jonti Morshead-Feildel, followed by a cheeky offload to Solomon Tuqiri, had Waverley over for the first 5-pointer for the CAS competition. Just as Waverley looked to work into a rhythm, they were temporarily reduced to 14 men, following poor discipline at the tackle.
Still, the Waves continued to approach the match with an attacking flair. A slick run by Tino Jahnke-Tavana down the left sideline saw a well-placed chip kick find the hands of Tuqiri who went in for his second try. Tino put on a masterclass again as he stepped past several defenders, and then threw a magic ‘no look’ pass into the hands of the always-supportive Charles Alexander, who charged away to score. Waverley now in front 21 to 6.
It was time for Tino to get rewards for his efforts throughout the match, and he soon accepted a try in the left corner. Approaching the break, Waverley held a comfortable lead, but were looking for more points. An intercept from Sinclair-Harris put Waverley again in a point scoring position. The call to “rumble the ball” was signalled, which included some strong carries from AJ Preketes, Ethan Halatokoua and Noah Tofaeono. But the St Aloysius’ defensive line did a great job holding Waverley out. Half time was called.
The long shadows fell across the College Oval grounds, and it seemed to get colder and colder. Winter had well and truly hit Willoughby! While Waverley held a comfortable lead, would the home side come back?
Cooper Stynes started the half in good form, and was wonderful in the air, disrupting the opposition lineout on several occasions. These efforts were rewarded with a try on the back of an entertaining passage of play from Sinclair-Harris, Tino, Tom Martin and Ben Finegan.
Aloysius’ did not give up, and this effort was rewarded with a try to the delight of the home supporters. However, a couple of late tries to Lachlan Grant as well as Felix Turinui, son of Waverley College Old Boy and Wallaby Legend, Morgan, meant that it would be a comprehensive victory for Waverley.
In other results from around the grounds, Barker defeated Trinity and Knox Grammar defeated Cranbrook in the opening round of CAS. Following the long weekend, Waverley heads up to Wahroonga, in what should be a schoolboy classic against Knox Grammar in Round 2 of the CAS Competition.
Last weekend was a successful day of rugby for Waverley College. From the 18 matches played against St Aloysius’, St Stanislaus and St Patrick’s, Waverley came away with 15 wins. The 4th XV match was unfortunately cut short due a player injury, and we pass on our best wishes for a speedy recovery to the St Aloysius’ player.
The 13s, 14s and 15s age group had an undefeated day. Credit to the 13Bs, 14Bs and 15Bs, who all had strong wins against A grade teams. Also, a shout out to the mighty 13Fs, who were the only team to travel out to Strathfield to have a great win against St Patrick’s.
We would like to congratulate our representatives at the Junior School, who were courageous last weekend in their rugby fixtures.
Firstly, we congratulate the Prep 1sts who got to play on QP1 for the very first time. What was even more pleasing, was a try in the final seconds of the match to Kingsley Turinui, which saw a win to Waverley over Scots College. Well done, lads!
We would also like to congratulate the 11s age group, who had a number of players missing due to illness and State Oztag. We had a group of students who covered two games in C Division (with a win and a loss), and a group who covered two games across A and B divisions, recording two wins. The future is certainly bright with such wonderful determination and commitment from our Junior School students. We are proud of you all!

We are away to St Aloysius’ this week for a number of teams, as well as a number of fixtures at Queens Park. This week also signifies the halfway mark of the winter season, and with only a couple more rounds this term and another three next term, all students need to ensure that they are attending all sessions and fixtures.
It was great to see the majority of students in attendance last weekend as spectators, correctly attired in their full Waverley sporting or school uniform. There are still a couple of individuals who are not meeting these expectations, and I want to reinforce that it is essential that all students at any sporting venue are correctly attired at all times.
Waverley congratulates Ryan McNamara on his phenomenal swims today, breaking 3 x U12 school records at the NSW All Schools Swimming Championships. Wow!

Our Volleyball teams last Saturday all recorded some impressive wins. Thank you to Ms Emily Pace and these coaches for continuing to develop this sport.
We also recorded some great results in Cross Country last Saturday, and I want to congratulate Dominic McGrath in Year 12 for his selection in the CAS Team, to compete on 30 July.
Additionally, last week we had a number of students competing for CAS Football, and a huge thank you to Mr Patrick Darvill for his efforts as CAS 1sts coach over the two long days.
The CAS U16 Football side went undefeated and had no goals scored against them. The CAS 1sts were runners up, and congratulations to Emilio Vinci and James Bulkeley on their selections in the NSWCIS side. Well done also to the Waverley College 1st XI Football on their 4-0 win against a strong Trinity Grammar side, even with a number of players out with illness.
On Thursday, 23 June our College House Athletics Carnival is scheduled at ES Marks. We are currently awaiting confirmation that the upgrade of these facilities will be finalised in time for this carnival. If there are further delays, we will look at potentially postponing this event into later in Term 3.
There are no co-curricular activities for the long weekend.

Last weekend, Waverley College enjoyed a fantastic day of rugby against Oakhill College. This was an excellent final test before the arrival of the CAS competition. On the day, from the 20 matches played against Oakhill, Waverley managed to score victories in 10 matches with two games drawn. This was a pleasing result against a school that has really developed their rugby program.
A week without training probably worked against our boys and their preparations, going into the matches played. Added to this, many players were ruled out late due to the various illnesses circulating around the community. Credit must be given once again to those students who really dug deep for their school and mates, to ensure no teams were left short.
I would like to highlight the effort of the mighty 13Fs who faced up against the St Pius 13Bs side. While going down in a tight match, the 13Fs certainly competed against some A/B graded players. Well done to those players involved, who never backed down from the challenge.
Off the field, I would like to extend our appreciation to all those wonderful parents who contributed on the BBQ and Canteen on Saturday. We regularly have such friendly and supportive parents who show up to help. It really is heartening to see the friendships develop behind the canteen, while we cheer on our boys together. I also must send a special thanks for the delightful food on offer – when feeling a little flat midway through the day, there is nothing like a BBQ Roll with ‘The Lot’ to pick up our spirits! Thanks to the Hickey, Andrews and Antis families who lead the Supporters’ Club each week!
After months of preparation, the Combined Associated Schools (CAS) Competition is finally here! This is the point of the season in which the competition commences for most teams. It is important that all players, spectators and coaches take note of the CAS Code of Conduct.

This weekend, Waverley College plays Round 1 of CAS against St Aloysius’ College. As a note, St Aloysius’ will not match up against all Waverley College teams, so we have a number of our sides playing against a range of other CAS/GPS/ISA schools, with some teams unfortunately having a BYE round.
Players are asked to check the draw carefully, as well as the team lists, to confirm if players may be required as reserves for some matches.
Please note, that as a result of illness and injury which have been accumulated through the season, we will no longer be fielding a 5th XV side or 15Ds side. We certainly appreciate that with the amount of illness we have had this season, a number of our players have been backing up for two matches. We sincerely thank all those students who always put in that extra effort for the Blue and Gold jersey!
The Rugby Supporters’ Club are looking for any parents, carers and friends of students in the 14s and 15s age groups, who would be able to assist on the canteen both this Saturday as well as the Saturday following the Long Weekend (against Knox Grammar School).
Any support, even for a period of one hour, would be very much appreciated. The canteen will be operating between the hours of 8am to 1pm.

Unfortunately, the weather continues to impact our winter season, with a number of games washed out last weekend. We did play some fixtures, and it was great to see our 1sts AFL, Football and Rugby all have impressive wins against strong opponents.
Thank you to the supporters and students who attended a number of these matches. Just a reminder that any Waverley student in attendance at any venue, whether it is home or away, must be in full sport attire or College uniform.
I also watched our 13D, E and F Rugby teams on Saturday, who were all outstanding, and represented the College to a very high standard.

Disappointingly, there were a number of students who chose not to attend their Football fixtures last Saturday at Barker, despite all notices clearly stating these matches were on. All students must meet their Co-curricular requirements for training and games, and the College also has a commitment to other CAS schools in terms of fielding teams. Any absence due to illness on a Saturday will require medical certificates as per College policy.
I also want to remind all parents of expectations at training and games in regards to communication with staff and coaches. Parents are asked to please remain at a distance at all training sessions, to allow coaches to do their jobs effectively. Speaking to coaches or staff whilst a fixture is on, is also a breach of CAS Codes of Conduct. If there are any issues or concerns, I would request that you only contact the convenor of that activity or myself, after the session or fixture.

Unfortunately, the fixture against Newington College was impacted by the rains. A number of cancellations occurred last weekend, which was a great shame. We do particularly feel for our Prep 1sts team who were looking forward to having their very first match on QP1. I know that special moment is just around the corner for these young men.
Still, we were able to go ahead with the 13Fs, 13Es, 13Ds, 16As, 4th XV, 3rd XV, 2nd XV and 1st XV matches. From the eight fixtures played, both Waverley and Newington recorded four wins each. Our 13s continue to show dominance with some strong victories.
13E Rugby
The 16As went very close to winning in a frustrating match, which I am sure they will learn plenty from. The Opens were very competitive, going down narrowly in soggy conditions, in the 4ths, 3rds and 2nds.
The 1st XV were able to get another win on the board. The Double V continues to build momentum as we approach the CAS competition. In difficult conditions, it has been pleasing to see the commitment on display by all 15 players working as one unit.
This weekend, Waverley College play the final CAS/GPS/ISA Trial Fixture of the season against Oakhill College. In recent years, it has been well publicised how Oakhill have helped with the development of such NRL stars as Luke Keary and Ryan Papenhuyzen. Oakhill will certainly prove to be a wonderful challenge for all our teams in the run into CAS.
Our 14s and 15s age groups head to Castle Hill to play at Oakhill, while the 13s, 16s and Opens will be playing at Queens Park for the final time in Term 2. All 16s and Opens teams have the chance to play on QP1 for the day, with the 1st XI Football team playing away this weekend. We wish all teams the best.

Last weekend, Waverley College Rugby enjoyed a competitive fixture against Shore. On the day, from the 21 matches played, Waverley secured 12 wins with 1 draw. It is pleasing to see that teams continue to improve, despite the challenges of illness impacting the College community.
1st XV
Congratulations must go to the 1st XV who enjoyed their first ‘Custard Pie’ at Queens Park for the season. The Double V’s hard work at training leading into the game, certainly paid dividends.
Opens Age Group
We would also like to commend the Opens Age Group. Despite going down in the 3rds and 5ths, all the matches were very competitive, and the effort from these young men was nothing short of gutsy. Due to illness impacting this age group, a number of students had to back up in two or three matches. Congratulations on displaying that courageous attitude for your school – we are proud of you.

The highlight of the day certainly came from the 16A team, who to continue to play such an exciting brand of rugby. The running rugby on display is terrific to watch, and is a refreshing reminder of the entertainment which ‘the game they play in heaven’ can deliver to those playing and those watching on the sidelines.
This weekend, our teams will play GPS school, Newington College. We anticipate that all matches will be competitive, which will help our teams in the lead into the CAS season, which is only a couple of weeks away. The 14s and 15s age groups finally have the opportunity of playing on our home ground, Queens Park, while our 13s, 16s and Opens will hit the road this weekend, to travel to Stanmore in the Inner West of Sydney.
A highlight which many Old Boys will often share about their days at Waverley College, is the memory of running out onto QP1 for the very first time. This weekend, we are thrilled to have our Prep 1sts team playing on the hallowed turf of Queens Park #1. Kick-off is at 8am, and we would love to see plenty of support for our young men. We wish these students all the very best of luck!
