A big thank you and well done to the whole Waverley College Years 5-12 community, on the first full round of winter fixtures last Saturday. Whilst the rain still impacted, and there were a number of cancellations prior to and on the day, those matches that did go ahead were all played in a good spirit and with good sportsmanship throughout the day.
I especially want to thank all of the parents who stepped in and assisted in the canteen, the after match 1sts functions, and at the BBQ last Saturday, as well as those parents who were at Queens Park from early Saturday morning into the evening. We are so blessed to have these parents who volunteer so much of their time to ensure we are delivering a high-quality program and hospitality for visiting school communities. We would love to have more parents involved, to better share the load!
I also want to thank Mr Jeremy Roff and Mr Nicholas Brophy for their hard work in hosting the first Cross Country event at North Ryde last weekend, in some very challenging conditions. Well done to Evan Rowbowtham, Joshua Peters, Campbell Groves and Dominic McGrath who all finished in the top ten for their respective divisions.
Well done also to Ryan McNamara (Year 7), on placing first in his three events at NSWCIS Swimming this week in 12yrs 50m free, 50m fly, 100m free. This is a huge achievement.
Ryan McNamara
Special mention to Scott Swinburn (Year 11) on his second place in the 200m backstroke.
Thank you to our Aquatics Convenor Ms Nicola Silsby and Head Swim coach Mr Nick Nezval for assisting with the CAS swim team on Monday and Tuesday.
Some reminders to all students, that only the new Waverley College attire is acceptable. If you are at any sporting venue to spectate and support, you must be in full Waverley College Co-curricular uniform (ie Waverley College sporting attire) OR Waverley College winter academic uniform.
Last week, there were, unfortunately, a number of students that were wearing variations of attire including non-school hoodies, shorts and other items. From this weekend, there will be consequences. If any student is not in the full correct attire, they will be asked to leave the venue.

I had the pleasure of watching the 1sts AFL on Friday evening, in what was a very physical and hard-fought contest against Newington. It was great to see so many students there supporting the team, but can I also request that those students ensure they are correctly attired.
We also had Christian Kitas representing the College at the prestigious Lawrence Campbell Oratory competition last Friday evening. Our Debating teams have their first rounds of CSDA Debating away to Loreto Kirribilli this coming Friday, and we wish all of those students and staff well.
I want to make special mention of Ehren Little (Year 10), who was recently selected in the Australian U16 Water Polo side as a 15-year-old. This is an amazing achievement and we will recognise Ehren later this year.
I also want to congratulate Sunny Steyn (Year 7), who competed at the NSW Touch selection championships, where he was the top try scorer and was selected in the NSW merit squad.
Sunny Steyn
We have a big weekend this weekend with home games against Knox and Riverview. I want to wish all teams well.
We will make a number of selection changes this week at training, based on last weekend’s performances, and all students need to ensure they are aware of the teams they are playing in this Saturday.
We commenced our Year 12 tutorials this week, and students and parents will be emailed the available schedules each week.
Literacy and Numeracy Tutorials also recommenced this week in the College Library. These are open to any student wishing to seek support in these academic areas. Times are 3:30-4:40pm and students just have to show up. The programs are repeated over two days to allow students to still meet their co-curricular requirements.
We have had some recent inquiries regarding students entering the NSW School Snow Sports events in the July holidays. Gratefully we have a parent, Ms Paula McCabe, who is prepared to organise this for any student at a competitive level in snowsports.
Please also note that it is the parents’ and students’ responsibilities to arrange entry and accommodation. Paula can be emailed: pmccabe@pmclegal-australia.com
Good luck to all activities this weekend.

Last weekend, Waverley College Rugby played its first trial fixture against The King’s School. The King’s School, who are part of the GPS competition, provided some very competitive matches.
From the 23 matches played, Waverley recorded 15 wins and came home in second place in eight matches. This was a great start to the season, with plenty of improvements to come, as coaches continue to work through the selection process to ensure players are graded appropriately.
I would like to particularly commend the 13s age group, from the mighty 13Fs to the 13As, who commenced the season on a high note, by winning convincingly across all grades. Well done!
This weekend, Waverley College play against St Ignatius’ College, Riverview. Riverview, like Waverley, are a school who love their rugby. The fixture will certainly require our students to step up to another level and aim to play at their very best.
Our 13s, 16s and Opens are fortunate to enjoy another home match at Queens Park (aside from the 13Es and 13Fs), while our 14s and 15s play at the St Ignatius’ playing fields, located within the school grounds.
We wish all players the very best for another successful weekend.
You might have noticed some new rules, which have popped up this season. This has included the ‘Goal Line Dropout’ rather than the ’22m Dropout’, which we have known over the years.
It has also included the new 50:22 rule, which is similar to the 40:20 rules in rugby league, and encourages teams to make attacking kicks and breathe some more life into the game.
Are you interested in reading about these new rules?
>>> Click here to view more information about the new rules.
While we are enjoying having our rugby back at Queens Park, we have recently discovered a shortage in match referees and assistant referees (touch judges), to assist with our matches. We would certainly welcome any support from parents and friends in the community who may be able to donate some time to assist as officials.
For those who may be unsure about the rules, and how to be a referee, we are very fortunate at Waverley College to have a wonderful referee coach, Mr Richard Chen, who can train any interested people in our community.
For those who may be interested (if you are qualified or not), please email Mr John McCoy jmccoy@waverley.nsw.edu.au
Any help would be very much appreciated.
We would like to extend a huge ‘thank you’ to our wonderful parents who assisted on the BBQ and canteen duties at Queens Park last weekend.
If you are able to assist at the Queens Park Canteen and BBQ this weekend, we would love your support!
We are expecting another big crowd at Queens Park this weekend. We would certainly appreciate any offers of support – even if you are only able to help on the Canteen for an hour while your son warms up for his match!
Should any parents, carers and friends be free to assist at any stage this weekend (or throughout the season), please register your interests on the 2022 online roster below:
>>> Click here to sign up to register your support at Queens Park BBQ and/or Canteen.
We are currently planning for some of our end-of-season events. This includes the Rugby Presentation Night, which is traditionally a wonderful end-of-season celebratory and social occasion for players and their families.
Do any community members have ideas about possible venues which might be able to cater for larger groups? If you do have any ideas, please feel free to email these to Mr McCoy.
I look forward to see you at Queens Park for our upcoming fixtures against Riverview!

Welcome back to all students, parents and carers to Term 2, and the commencement of our full winter activities program. We have our first full round of co-curricular fixtures this weekend.
It is essential that all students are fully attired in the correct playing gear and that they arrive at each fixture a minimum of 30 minutes prior to the start of each match.
Due to the disruptions with the weather, and the short first week of Term 2, we will continue to make selections and changes after this weekend. All students are also required to reserve the fixture following their own where appropriate.
Any student who requires leave for a weekend fixture, must ensure that a request is submitted as early as possible before a weekend. Any absence due to injury or illness will require a medical certificate.
A reminder to all students also that the new hoodies available in the uniform shop can only be worn to training and sporting fixtures and must not be worn at any time whilst at school. The College PE jacket and hoodie are at no stage to be worn with academic attire.
All players, parents and spectators are also bound by the CAS Codes of Conduct for respect of officials and the opposition, and must follow staff instructions at each venue. We are also still working under strict COVID-19 protocols. Any persons who are displaying any flu like symptoms must not attend, and all hygiene measures are still in place.
A big thank you to all of the students, staff and coaches involved in a wide range of activities over the holidays. We had Volleyball, AFL, Football and Rugby training and fixtures, and many students and staff gave up a lot of hours in their holidays in preparation for Term 2.
I especially want to mention the efforts of the 1st XI Football who were crowned the St Andrew’s Cup premiers for 2022. The St Andrew’s Cup had 15 schools playing multiple tough fixtures over two days, and Waverley were successful in defeating a strong Moriah 3-1 in the final.

Waverley College took out the 2022 St Andrew’s Cup Trophy after defeating Moriah College 3-1 at Valentine Sports Park in Glenwood, after two days of football action at NSW’s home of football.
Our 1st XI Football with the coaching staff of Patrick Darvill, Donato D’Agrosa and Jack Hardwicke-Owen proved too strong for their opponents, scoring two opportunistic goals in the second half to end the game in convincing fashion.
This year’s tournament saw 15 participating schools that included the likes of Waverley College, St Ignatius’ College Riverview, Cranbrook School, Sydney Grammar School, Redlands School, Marist Catholic College, Moriah College, International Grammar School, St Andrew’s Cathedral School, Sydney Boys High School, Barker College, Newington College, Knox Grammar School, Oakhill College and St Spyridon College, who all battled well in the coveted pre-season Cup competition.
Waverley 1st XI St Andrew’s Cup Premiers 2022
I spoke with the current 1st XI Captain, Emilio Vinci, to hear his thoughts on the Cup’s significance to the squad, and any advice he had for Waverley’s football teams this season.
The St Andrews cup is a good pre-season tournament before our CAS season starts, and it allows us to see what is working and what is not working within our team, so we can train on our weaknesses. All of the boys put in solid efforts and it ended up leading us to victory against Moriah 3-1 in the cup final. This is a good indicator and achievement to start our season on a high note, and it gives us tactical information on how other teams within the CAS competition play.
I’m sure with winning this trophy it has created a big confidence boost to all of us boys that we will take with us throughout the season, however we can’t let the confidence overtake our gameplay. But it does motivate us players to want to win more and more, as we desire to take home the CAS trophy and try our best to take out the CIS trophy back to back.
For the younger boys, it is important to always put in hard work throughout training, as I’m sure all of you have heard your coaches say, “the way you train is the way you play.” Because one day you might be putting on the first XI jersey and playing with your mates beside you. Keep working hard, as hard work pays off and always remember to enjoy yourself on the pitch. GO WAVES!

As Convenor of Football I felt very privileged to witness such a hard-earned victory for the College boys, after what was a very limited pre-season for all of our footballers. In light of this, all football teams are likely to see changes in their squads throughout the season.
General expectations continue regarding correct playing attire, arriving 30 minutes prior to their game, and a medical certificate or approved leave if they are absent.
Players can find their teams for this Saturday’s fixtures as published on the Waverley app or at the top of the article by Mr Stephen O’Donnell, Director of Co-curricular.

I would like to thank all the efforts of our hard-working and extremely dedicated coaching staff, who gave up their time over the holiday break to run multiple training sessions. Thanks must go, also, to those students who attended and put in the hard yards over the break. No doubt this would have helped work off a few of those ‘Easter eggs’ consumed, but more importantly, improved individual skill levels heading into the season ahead.
This weekend we are looking forward to our fixture against The King’s School. Located at North Parramatta, The King’s School is the oldest independent school in Australia (founded in 1831). King’s have produced some Wallaby greats including Stirling Mortlock, and there will no doubt be some terrific contests on Saturday across all age groups.
Our 13s, 16s and Opens age groups will enjoy their first matches at Queens Park. Our 14s and 15s age groups will travel to Parramatta. Players should ensure they leave plenty of time to get to the grounds on the weekend.
Unfortunately, we have not started the season as we would have hoped, with the impact of rains interrupting the commencement of the season. We are also mindful of students who were at Cadet Camp at the end of Term 1, and those who have been impacted by COVID-19. That said, the upcoming weekends of rugby will certainly be used as trial matches for coaches to have a good look at player performances.
This week, coaching staff have tried their very best to select trial teams in most age groups, which will certainly change over the coming weeks. Trial team lists have been posted on the Waverley College app. If a player does not appear to be listed, he is encouraged to email Mr McCoy jmccoy@waverley.edu.au who will let him know which team he will trial in, for this week. In some instances, we are asking extended squads to turn up for two matches, which will allow coaches to run players on and off (no substitution limit) during this trial period.
We thank players and parents for their patience while we continue to work through our selection process. Our main aim is, of course, to have teams ready to go for the CAS competitions which commence in June.
Are you able to assist at the Queens Park Canteen and BBQ this weekend? We would love your support!
We have a big opening round of rugby and are expecting a big crowd to attend. We would certainly appreciate any offers of support – even if you are able to help on the Canteen for an hour while your son warms up for his match.
If any parents, carers and friends are free to assist at any stage this weekend (or throughout the season), please register your interests on the 2022 Online Roster.

Thank you for your support in advance!
As the COVID-19 restrictions continue to ease, we are looking forward to celebrating some events which we once enjoyed prior to the pandemic. This includes the Rugby Presentation Night at the end of the season.
Would any members of our community have ideas about possible venues which might be able to cater for larger groups? Please feel free to pass any ideas on to Mr McCoy via email: jmccoy@waverley.nsw.edu.au
I look forward to seeing you on the sidelines as rugby season kicks off this weekend.

The past two years of intermittent lockdowns have proven the importance of moving more, sitting less and looking after your posture … especially for kids and teenagers!
As a physiotherapist, I have seen an enormous up-tick in the number of people, including teens, coming into our clinics for neck pain and back pain treatment over the past two years, largely due to working from home in poor postural positions. In fact, it has been so pronounced, that I have named it ‘The posture pandemic.’
Whilst kids have now returned to the classroom, homework will still be done at home (hopefully), and the hard lessons learned from home-schooling can be applied both to the home office and the classroom.
There are a number of factors, but the most common include poor ergonomics (slouched over the kitchen table), distractions from other screens off to the side (phones and TVs), and easy access to the kitchen, which can result in snacking on inflammatory foods. Let’s break each of these down and at the end I will offer some tips to mitigate the impact of them on your spine.
Let’s start with posture and ergonomics. The human body is designed to move regularly. It has only been in the past 100 years (on a human evolution timeline of around 200,000 years) that humans have even had the option to be sedentary. Prior to computers and cars, we were forced to move our bodies for the majority of the day in order to survive. Most of our grandparents grew up in a world where most jobs involved manual labour, walking was the main form of transport, and computers didn’t exist. In short, the transition to extensive periods of sitting is a new phenomenon, and one that the human spine is not tolerating.
School desks are still superior to working from a bed
Whilst working in the classroom is still not ideal for kids’ necks, school desks are still superior to working from a bed, and regular walks between classrooms combined with lunchtime sport, offer some incidental exercise.
Regular walks between classrooms combined with lunchtime sport, offer some incidental exercise
At home, many kids are lying on their bed or slouched in poor chairs to do homework (or when watching TV or playing video games). This is putting enormous amounts of strain through the neck, creating tightness, weak muscles and resulting in pain.

Unfortunately, the wet weather has impacted on the commencement of the 2022 Rugby season. We have been fortunate enough to have some trial periods during the week, however, we are very mindful that a number of students have been unable to trial due to Cadet Camp, the impact of COVID-19, illness, and various other reasons.
We will certainly be using the opening trial fixtures in Term 2 against King’s and Riverview to assist coaches with team selections and establish team structures. Our focus will be on the CAS Competition which commences at the start of June.
Please note: any cancellations or changes that are made to the Holiday Training Schedule will be communicated through the Waverley College app. All players and parents are encouraged to ensure they download the app and subscribe to ‘Rugby.’

Please keep your eye on the Waverley College app over the coming holiday period, where we will be publishing the 2022 Season Guide. This sets out all the information you need to know regarding the upcoming Rugby season.
We are aware of and certainly support a number of students who are involved in external sporting club commitments. As a note, we are expecting that all Waverley College students commit to the May Procession on Sunday, 1 May.
In some instances, we are working with clubs to ensure they can create fixtures at times around the May Procession timeslot.
The May Procession is a highly significant tradition at Waverley College (for over 100 years) and is a key part of our identity as an Edmund Rice school.

Last Saturday saw our first full round of internal trials, as well as our As and 1sts Football squads play in the CAS Blitz. There was a great level of enthusiasm and enjoyment from all students and coaches, in being able to get out onto the fields and courts.
Our 1sts Football and 8As Football were certainly the standouts on Saturday, with these two teams winning all of their matches.
The postponed Summer Awards Assembly has also been rescheduled to next Thursday, and we will hopefully get to recognise those award winners then.
Hopefully, we are able to get on again this weekend, and start to finalise selections.

We do have a number of students competing at the Aussie SLS titles over the next week for various surf clubs, and we wish all of these students the very best with their performances.
Next week, our Year 9 students along with other members of the Cadet unit, are at the AFX Cadet Camp in Majura, ACT. The camp activities look fantastic. Giving all students the opportunity to get outside their comfort zone, in an outdoor educational environment, is critical for students who go to a school in an urban area like Waverley. We wish all of the staff and members of the unit the very best for the week.
Any student who requires leave for a Saturday commitment, must make an application in writing to me via email, with two weeks’ notice where possible.
If any student is absent due to illness or injury, it is College policy that a medical certificate or COVID-19 test result is required. A maximum of two exemptions will be granted per year. Failure to attend will result in lower gradings and detentions being issued.
Holiday Training and Trial Opportunities
As the start of Term 2 is a very short first week, with students commencing on Thursday, and Waverley playing its first round of competitive fixtures on Saturday, 30 April, we will provide holiday training and trial opportunities for students who are available.
Selections and Playing Attire
Selections will be ongoing during Term 2, and all staff and coaches will do their best to grade students accordingly.
By the start of Term 2, all students must have all necessary playing attire for that first weekend.

Last weekend, it was so pleasing to see that Queens Park was alive and well! Rugby was back! Students were involved in training sessions and some internal trials throughout the morning which, thankfully, were able to go ahead despite some soggy conditions.
With a long season ahead, it is important that our coaching staff have players well prepared for full contact. As players return to Rugby, coaches have been able to assist in developing some of the technical areas, such as the tackle, to ensure injuries can be avoided.
Further to this, coaches have refreshed our young men about the key protocols used such as the MAYDAY procedure at the scrum, as to ensure that players are well prepared with key safety terminology during the games played.
In 2022, it is important that all our players are up to date with some key law changes. This includes the introduction of the 50:22 rule as well as the update around the ‘Goal Line Dropouts.’ It is extremely important that our players are ‘switched on’ when it comes to understanding these rules, as these changes could very much be used to our advantage.

Please note that a training schedule will be sent out in the coming week for the Easter holidays. This will be sent out through the Waverley College App (a reminder that Team App will no longer be used).
If families have made plans for the upcoming holiday period, we certainly support this, and hope you enjoy the time away. At the same time, if students have no plans to travel, we certainly would love to see them at training over the break.
As team selections are gradually made over the coming weeks, in preparation for the fixture against The King’s School on Saturday, 30 April, please know that teams which are initially selected, are not set or final.
Coaches are mindful that some players have been unable to train, as they have been impacted by COVID-19 in recent weeks, and others may have been involved in various school activities and camps.
Coaches are working hard to ensure players are appropriately graded, but this can take time. We thank players and parents for their patience, as we work through this important process.
