Senior and Junior Sport Fixtures – Everyone Needs the Waverley App to Receive Updated Notifications

This week, most students have now commenced their full training schedule, and either have further internal trials this weekend, or matches against other schools.

With some wet weather forecast over this week, it is vital that all members of the community have the Waverley College app, to ensure they receive any updated notifications. All fixtures and training schedules are also found on the College website.

>>> Click here to view the Senior and Junior Sport Fixtures on the College website.

>>> Click here to view instructions about how to download the Waverley app.

Encouraging Efforts at the First Internal Trials and Fixtures

Well done and a big thank you to all students and parents, as well as our dedicated staff and coaches, who did a tremendous job with the first lot of internal trials and fixtures last weekend.

1st V Basketball

Unfortunately, our 1st V Basketball trial against St Pats was cancelled at the last moment, due to some positive COVID-19 cases in the opposition. This is now the world we live in, and is likely to be a recurrent theme at various times through this year.

1sts and 2nds Cricket

Our 1sts and 2nds Cricket were able to play fixtures against St Pats, and whilst both sides went down, we certainly put up some great performances, particularly Maxim Brooks with the bat and Eddie Regan with the ball.

Zone Little As Carnival Delivers Standout Performances

We also had a number of students competing last Saturday at the zone Little As Carnival, with some standout performances from Sunny Steyn, Evan Rowbotham, Jack Richardson, Ryan McNamara and Ricardo Zanapalis.

Jack Ryan Medals at NSW State Indoor Hockey Premiers!

I also want to congratulate Jack Ryan (Year 10), on being part of the NSW State Indoor Hockey premiers in Goulburn over the summer holiday break.

Winter Activity Change Requests Conclude Friday, 18 February

We have also commenced our winter activity change requests, which will conclude on Friday, 18 February. We will do our best to accommodate all requests, but cannot guarantee every change will be approved.

Teams Playing Away

With a number of our As Basketball and 1sts and 2nds Teams playing away this weekend, all six CAS schools have agreed to allow one parent spectator per player on site. All parents will need to QR code on entry, and show proof of vaccination. Students do not need to do either of these. No more than one spectator per player is permitted. Masks are to be worn by all parents in attendance, and social distancing will be enforced by COVID-marshalls.

Teams at Waverley College

For anyone attending Waverley College, the only entry point will be through Gate 9A adjacent to the Performing Arts Centre on Birrell Street. Any student or parent who has COVID-19 symptoms, is a close contact, has been directed to isolate, or has tested positive is asked to not attend and seek appropriate testing. It is also vital that visitors follow directions of our facilities staff and marshalls at all times.

Leave Requests – Do You Know the Rules?

Just a reminder, that any leave requests need to be in writing two weeks prior, where possible, and that a maximum of two requests will be granted per year.

We have already received a number of requests for leave for upcoming Branch and State Surf Lifesaving Titles, State Touch Football and State Oz-Tag over the next four weeks. To ensure we can make the necessary team adjustments, can I please encourage these requests for those events to be submitted as early as possible.

Good luck to all teams this week!

Year 7 Trials

Thank you to Mr Elliot, Mr Kroll, Mr O’Donnell, Mr Wilmot and our new Old Boy coaches Ed Sullivan (Class of 2021) and Max Farmeary (Class of 2021), for their involvement in the Year 7 Cricket trials last Thursday. All coaches assisted in planning and delivering a successful training session, and all students actively participated. The coaches were pleased to see such a large turnout and we welcome all new Year 7 players to the Waverley College cricket community.

Another noteworthy observation was the large number of students who have returned to cricket from the Junior School. This highlights the extensive work that Mr Wachtel and coaches at the junior campus have put into ensuring the students enjoy what is a great game.

1st and 2nd XI v St Patrick’s Strathfield for the Brother Berg-Murphy Shield

The spirit of Edmund Rice was on display over the weekend, as Waverley fought to retain the Brother Berg-Murphy shield. The 1st and 2nd XI both lost to strong St Pat’s sides, but again, a display of Waverley College courage and determination to compete was evident across both games.

Eddie Regan again exhibited his ability to lead with action taking 3/55 off ten overs. Carter Steyn also deserves congratulations for his debut in the 1st XI and taking 2/25 off five overs. Max Brooks led the way with the bat, and top scored by hitting nine 4s and one 6 to reach a score of 60 before being bowled out.

In the 2nds, Freddie Le Vay proved his worth by taking 2/20 and knocking up a total of 38. Jack George, who was pulled into the 2nds as a last minute inclusion from the 10As, reached a total of 44.

Welcome Back!

Lastly, I would like to welcome back all Waverley Cricket parents and students to the start of the Term 1 side of the season. It has been a disrupted schedule, and I understand that limitations on attendance regarding COVID-19 have prevented many of you from being as involved in the Waverley Cricket community as you normally would.

I thank you for your patience, resilience and support, in ensuring that despite these circumstances we, as a community, constantly aim to achieve what is best for the students. Looking forward to seeing many of you soon down at Queens Park!

Please also note, that a maximum of two leave requests can be obtained.

COVIDSafe Protocols on Campus

For this Saturday, 29 January, we request that there are no parents or spectators anywhere on the College campus, as part of our COVIDSafe protocols. We will continue to review this over the coming weeks.

Any student identified as a close contact, or who develops COVID-19 symptoms, must not attend any school activities or sport until a negative RAHT test or PCR result is submitted and 7 days isolation have passed.

Students will also be required to show up and depart immediately at the conclusion of any fixtures and must not share drink bottles. Hand sanitiser will also be available at all venues.

Winter Activity Change Requests

From next Monday, 31 January, students in Years 7-12 can request a winter activity change until Friday, 18 February. Please note, that a request does not guarantee approval, and each request will be assessed appropriately.

Any student who also wants to change to Rugby without previous experience, will be required to undergo sport specific testing to analyse suitability as per ARU protocols.

Full Correct Summer Co-curricular Attire Essential

All students will need to ensure that they also have the full correct summer co-curricular attire for all activities.

Waverley College App – Are Your Notifications for all Groups on?

All parents, carers and students are strongly encouraged to have downloaded the Waverley College app and have notifications for all groups ON, so that they receive updates, team selections, as well as any wet weather information. Students who fail to attend trials and training will be selected in the lowest teams for that activity.

A big thank you to all of the students and staff who gave up time in their holidays for training, tournaments and sports camps.

Good luck to all students or their trials this coming weekend.

CAS Sport Update

The CAS Sportsmaster’s Committee have unanimously elected to adopt a singularly consistent approach to the operation of CAS Sport in Term 1.

With reference to Community Sport Guidelines, the existing Public Health Order and the NSWAIS COVID-19 FAQs for the NSW Independent Schools and the Office for Sport, the following recommendations are offered:

Staff, participants, officials, and spectators should not attend sport if they are:

Parent/spectator attendance at sporting fixtures is supported by the application of the following mitigations:

Protocols For Outdoor Venues – 2 spectators per player

Mandatory Requirements

All spectators attending school campuses must be fully vaccinated. This is in keeping with the expectations for employees and volunteers for schools, as outlined in the current Public Health (COVID-19 vaccination of education and care workers) Order (Number 2) 2021, and recommendations offered in the NSWAIS FAQs.

Protocols For Indoor Venues – 1 spectator per player

All spectators attending school campuses must be fully vaccinated. This is in keeping with the expectations for employees and volunteers for schools, as outlined in the current Public Health (COVID-19 vaccination of education and care workers) Order (Number 2) 2021, and recommendations offered in the NSWAIS FAQs.

Additional Principles Promoting a COVIDSafe Environment

  1. Participants and spectators are to be on site for the period whilst the participant is playing
  2. Increased cleaning of high-touch areas and bathrooms
  3. Canteens may be operational. Host school to consider risk.
  4. Food services for players and officials participating in 1st fixtures to comply with COVIDSafe practices.
  5. Change rooms to be closed for all groups outside of 1st teams – participants in all other teams arrive, ready to play.

Student Participation

The requirement that only fully vaccinated persons aged 16 plus participate in community and school sport no longer applies.

From 9-12 December, Sydney Olympic Park Athletic Centre hosted the young rising stars of NSW track and field. Now in its 85th year, this inspiring annual championship brought together elite athletes aged 12–19 from across NSW, who challenged themselves to achieve and exceed personal bests and give record-breaking performances.

In a field of 1907 athletes from 498 NSW schools, (including para athletes), Waverley students made us proud! Congratulations to each student who represented our College in competition and friendship over the four days, displaying how to win and lose gracefully.

Many national and Olympic athletes have competed in these championships to go on to higher honours, and we’re excited that 15 of our students achieved personal bests!

Standout performances came from Waverley’s Solomon Tuqiri (photo above) in both the Boys 17 years Hammer Throw Final (3rd and 2nd in NSW) and Discus Final (3rd and a personal best), and Ricardo Zanapalis (photo below) in the Boys 15 years Long Jump Final (4th and 3rd in NSW and an equal personal best).

Firstly, a thank you to all involved over the past week as we prepared for the first of our competitive matches against Cranbrook. Coaches and parents have been tremendous in their support and this resulted in a highly competitive day all round.

Saturday, 20 November Matches

Year 8Bs

The Year 8Bs witnessed their very own Jake Willard take 6 for 17, in what had many of the Cranbrook batsmen dazzled and confused. Five of Jake’s wickets were clean bowled. This was followed by some other impressive performances in the Year 8As, as William Livissianis scored 51 in a partnership with the great man, Fred Robertson, who totalled 45.

Jake Willard 6/17 in 8Bs Cricket

Jake Willard 6/17 – dazzled in 8Bs Cricket

Year 10As

Some standout batting was witnessed in the Year 10As, with Lucas Ryan out for 32. In the 2nd XI, both Liam Wood and Euan Veale-Wright were out in the 20s, but there is a lot of potential for these young men this season.

Carter Steyn again showed some consistency with his score of 24. Thank you to Jack George and Hunter Elridge, who played in the Year 10A game and then backed up to test themselves in the 2nds. Hirav Gandhi top scored in the 1st XI with a 66 as he wore down the Cranbrook quick, and then opened up in the back end of the innings.

1st XI – Presentation of Baggy Blues

Lastly, the 1st XI began the day with a cap presentation of their Baggy Blues, and much of this excitement was redirected throughout the match. It was noted by all on the day, how well the 1st XI carried themselves in terms of their respect for the game and the opposition. This was seen in their efforts against what is probably the most in form team within the CAS.

Overall, a really excellent effort by our 1st XI students, with a number of the team goals achieved such as batting the 50 overs, and also making sure we do the little things right in the field. Waverley batted first and put on a total of 169 with two wickets in hand at the end of the innings. However, in the end, their inability to effect a run out from many half chances, got the Cranbrook side home. Much to look forward to next week!

We have our final round of 2021 Co-curricular this coming weekend, with some friendly fixtures against Trinity in Basketball, Cricket, Touch Football and Tennis. It was great to see many students playing well and having fun against Cranbrook last weekend.

Success in Basketball and Cricket

I watched our 1sts and 2nds Basketball play against Cranbrook last Friday evening, with both teams securing impressive ‘come from behind’ wins. For the 1sts, Tom Gleeson, Marko Rangan and Sergei Jakovljevic were amongst the standouts.

Whilst our 1st XI Cricket went down against a very strong Cranbrook team, they performed really well with limited preparation with Hirav Gandhi scoring a solid 66, with Waverley batting for the full 50 overs to end the innings at 8/169. Cranbrook passed our total 4 wickets down with 8 overs to go, but there were a lot of positives to take out of the performance.

Well done also to William Livissianis and Fred Robertson in the 8As Cricket for their 50 and 42 runs respectively, as well as Jake Willard in the 8Bs who took an amazing 6/17 with some outstanding bowling.

Compulsory Co-curricular Attire and COVID-19 Protocols

We are hosting Trinity in a number of fixtures this week, and just a reminder that all students should now be in the new co-curricular attire for all games.

COVID-19 protocols remain in place this weekend for all school venues, that include no spectators or parents on site at any school. All students will be required to QR code on entry, and students over the age of 16 may have to show vaccination status on entry.

For those playing at Waverley College senior campus, please only use the gate adjacent to the Performing Arts Centre, for entry and exit. I would also like to reinforce that no student should be bringing any friends on site at any time, and once your fixture has concluded, you are required to depart immediately.

Is Your Son Interested in Holiday Training and Camps?

We will be offering some holiday training that includes Swim Squad, Basketball and Cricket camps, as well as Athletics and pre-season Football and Rugby training. Students should keep an eye out for notices on the Waverley app, in Nurrunga, as well as via their email inbox for further details.

Farewell to Departing Staff, Coaches and Students

For those staff, coaches and students who are leaving the Waverley College community at the end of 2021, I want to say a huge thank you for your dedication and commitment to the co-curricular program in your time here.

Five-Round CAS Competition in Term 1, 2022

We will also be using the first two weekends in 2022 to re-trial all teams for a five-round CAS competition in Term 1. We will then immediately move into our Winter program, and for any students who want to request a change of their winter activities, they will be able to submit this change over the first three weeks of next term.

Best wishes to all players, parents and coaches this weekend, as well as for the upcoming well-earned holidays.

Thank you!

As the year draws to an end, we never really had the opportunity to thank all those members of the Waverley College community, who assisted with the Rugby program in 2021. While it was a disappointing finish to the season, particularly for our departing Year 12 players and families, I do hope that players in all age groups gained some enjoyment from the matches we were able to go ahead with, prior to lockdown.

Looking Ahead — Summer Preseason (1st XV, 2nd XV and 16As 2022)

As the saying goes, “Absence makes the heart grow founder.” If anything, I do hope that the events of the 2020 and 2021 seasons will motivate players to get back out onto the playing fields in the 2022 season.

To prepare players for the 2022 season, we are holding summer preseason training sessions over the December/January holiday period. This is for any students who are interested in playing in the 1st XV, 2nd XV and 16As in 2022. Training will include strength and conditioning work, speed work and important skill work. All players involved in the 16s and Opens Age Groups (2022) are most welcome to attend these sessions.

Players in these age groups have received an email from Mr McCoy (Convenor of Rugby). They are asked to register their names in the shared Google Sheet, as well as the sessions that they will be able to attend. This is extremely important to ensure that we have sufficient coaching staff, to cater for the students involved.

Training Sessions

Training sessions will be held on these dates:

December Sessions

 January Sessions

Sessions will commence at the College Weights Room at 9am. Students will make their way down to Queens Park for the second half of the session, and will conclude at 12pm. Students need to bring training gear (shirts, shorts, socks, sandshoes and boots), a towel, sunscreen, a hat, plenty of water and nutritious snacks for the session.

Should players have any questions regarding the summer preseason, please direct these to Mr McCoy (jmccoy@waverley.nsw.edu.au).

Waverley College Rugby Supporters’ Club — Opportunities

The Waverley College Rugby Supporters’ Club are looking for any interested parents and friends who are interested in joining the committee in the 2022 season. This includes any parents who might consider assisting with some of the leadership roles into the future.

The Rugby Supporters’ Club is a certainly an enjoyable group to be attached to, and we have enjoyed many happy memories over the years. If you are interested in joining, please feel free to contact Mr McCoy (jmccoy@waverley.nsw.edu.au). We will be looking to meet in early 2022, to create some exciting plans for the season ahead.

Wishing all members of the Waverley College Community a very safe and happy Christmas break!

This summer, our coaches will once again offer weekly training sessions for all our swimmers and water polo players. This is not a ‘learn to swim’ program, but is for those students who are already in the Swimming and Water Polo co-curricular teams.

Session Information

Sessions will be held at the Waverley Pool on the following dates:

December 2021: 8am–9:30am

If you wish to attend, please add your name to the Swimfit Summer Sessions Google form below. This is because we need to have an accurate roll of swimmers for each session.

Good luck and best wishes to the great men of Waverley College for this Saturday, as they compete against Cranbrook School in their first competitive trial match of the season. All cricketers have worked extremely hard in fine tuning their skills, in what has been a very short time frame since the easing of restrictions and a return to school sport.

The past two weeks have seen many notable performances, and highly competitive cricket played. Carter Steyn retired at 32 on Saturday with a well-timed shot over the bowler’s head to go one bounce for four. Moreover, some aggressive cricket was exemplified by Liam Wood, as he pushed the ball around between fielders to keep the opposition on their toes.

Connor Andrews’ in-swingers were also hard to pick by the batsmen, as the middle stump became his closest companion. Meanwhile, in the Year 10 internal trial match, many were quietly disappointed when Hunter Elridge’s hat trick ball was pushed over the fingertips of mid off.

Lastly, a noteworthy observation has been the return of the likes of Thomas Walker and Andrew Maloney, who have ‘seen the light’ and returned to cricket this season to take part in the College’s oldest sport.

A final congratulations to Eddie Regan who has been selected as the 1st XI Captain. The respect that Eddie receives from his peers, combined with his strong cricketing knowledge, will put the team in a competitive position this season. The team will be coached by Mr Kroll and Mr McNamara.

1st XI for Saturday, 20 November at Woollahra Oval 2/3

Mr Sean Picone

Convenor of Cricket

E: spicone@waverley.nsw.edu.au

Well done to all students, staff and coaches on their impressive efforts over the weekend and this week for the start of training and trials. We will continue to conduct internal trials this coming weekend to select teams for the final two weeks of the term.

We have published an updated training schedule that will commence from Monday, 15 November and it is essential that all students, parents and carers check this for a number of changes that will give students more opportunities to train and play.

>>> Click here to view the updated training schedule.

Whilst we will be selecting some teams this week, we will have an opportunity to retrial and select new teams at the start of 2022. We will also appoint our Summer activity captains and recognise the 1sts teams during Term 1.

Important Processes

Can I also please remind all students, parents and carers about some of the important processes for the next couple of weeks:

Good luck to all students and teams for their trials and selections this week.

Notices are in Nurrunga and Notifications are on the Waverley College app

A strong start by many students this week with the re-commencement of a modified co-curricular program for the next four weeks. Parents and students were emailed the training program and internal trial fixtures for this weekend.

However, parents and students must please ensure they read all notices from now on in the Nurrunga or have the Waverley College app for all other notifications. With some wet weather forecast over the next week, the app will be the only form of immediate notifications regarding any cancellations or adjustments.

College Fixtures and Training Schedules

>>> Click here to view the College fixtures and training schedules.

With a quickly changing environment regarding COVID-19 protocols, we will look at adjusting some of the restrictions and training schedules for the last two weeks of this term. We still require any student who is turning 16 or older, before the end of term, to be fully vaccinated to participate in inter-school sport. Please ensure that these records are emailed to the College Nurse Ms Adele Cutbush: acutbush@waverley.nsw.edu.au

QR Codes and Proof of Vaccination Requirements

Students who are participating in trial fixtures on Saturday, 20 November against Cranbrook, and Saturday, 27 November against Trinity, are required to QR code in at all school sporting venues. Any student 16 years or older will need to show proof of vaccination or medical exemption.

Swim Squad Requirements

All water polo players who are currently training as part of the Swim Squad are reminded that they need goggles and swimming costumes for all sessions. Students and parents are also reminded that the training schedules and fixtures are labelled by students’ 2022 Year Group as the Summer season continues into Term 1 next year.

Leave Request Requirements

Please also note that any leave requests for weekends away or other commitments need to be in writing to myself for approval.

Modified Cadet Program Begins

We are also commencing a modified Cadet program on site from this week, however, we have unfortunately had to make the decision to cancel the proposed bivouac in the December holidays.

COVID-safe Protocols Continue

No parents will be permitted to attend any fixtures or training sessions at any school sporting venue due to COVID-Safe protocols. Any student who is not feeling well is also asked not to attend and must seek a COVID test and receive a negative result prior to returning to school or any activities.

All students are strongly encouraged to keep using all of the supplied hand sanitiser and must wear face masks when not engaging in physical activity. No sharing of drink bottles or use of change rooms, unless swimming, will be permitted for school sporting activities. Access to toilets will still be available.

Obviously if there are any changes to these protocols we will notify the wider College community as soon as possible.

What About Excursions and Camps?

Unfortunately, due to the ongoing impact and Level 3 plus restrictions in place around students’ returning to school, activities not permitted or on hold include excursions and camps. Consequently, the College has had to cancel the Year 8 and Year 10 camps for 2021 that were due to commence in November. The College highly values the outdoor education experience for all students and we are hopeful that these activities will be able to proceed in 2022.

The cost of these camps that had been charged to College fees will be credited back to your school fee account, thereby reducing the fees for Term 1 2022. Please contact the college Accounts Department for any queries: schoolfees@waverley.nsw.edu.au

Good luck for all students with their training and trials over the next few weeks.
