New Tackle Height Rugby Law for 2024

Well done to all players, staff, coaches and parents/carers on a positive first full round last weekend against Barker. Our Year 7 Water Polo Team were outstanding and a three quarters of our Basketball teams all recorded victories over the weekend.

In 2024, Rugby Australia and World Rugby are implementing a specific new rule change around tackle heights in all community rugby, including in schools. The new law is that all contact must be below the bottom of the sternum and this has been successfully implemented in other countries such as New Zealand, that has seen a reduction in concussions by 30%.

We will ensure that all of our rugby coaches, as well as players, are trained and prepared for the season with this new law. For any significant change in a law within a sport there will be a period of adjustment, however, any positive change that will keep players safer around concussion is something that we definitely support. We would also ask that all players and parents/carers in rugby make themselves familiar with this new law.

We will also still follow the Rugby Australia concussion protocols for ALL of our activities. This includes 19 days of no sport or training and medical certificate clearance before returning to any matches or training. If any student suffers a concussion in an external club game it is also imperative the College is informed of this, to ensure student welfare and safety.

Captains of Basketball Report

1sts V

On Saturday, the 1st’s V Basketball team faced off against Barker. Unfortunately, Waverley came up short against Barker, falling 119-97, in a disappointing loss for the players.

The players were led and motivated throughout the game by Eden Byrd’s shooting and scoring ability, which kept them in the game whilst Barker had a lead early. After Barker’s early lead, the 1sts were able to chip away at the score and eventually bring it down to only a 9-point deficit, however as this happened, Barker picked up the intensity on defence, and was able to force a lot of turnovers from Waverley to raise the deficit to 40 points. The boys never stopped fighting however, and managed to cut the lead down to 22 points, in a loss where the offence did very well, however, their defence let them down.

The 1sts record now drops to 2-4 as they hope to bounce back next week against another tough opponent in Knox Grammar.

2nds V

The Waverley 2nds come into the second half of the CAS season with a record of 4-1 and in the fight to win the competition. They faced off against Barker, who they suffered their only loss to last year, and were hoping to get revenge.

The game started with an early lead for Barker, the Waverley boys were unable to match their intensity as they jumped to a 10-point lead. As the game progressed the score went back and forth but remained at the 10-point margin. As the fourth quarter went on, Barker stretched their lead to 15 and things were looking bleak for the Waverley boys.

With the efforts from the likes of Giles Strachan, Hudson Hatchett and Renato Rovacchi, the 2nds were able to reel in the deficit, making the game go down to the wire. Unfortunately, the deficit was too big to come back from, and the 2nds suffered their second loss of the season, 43-41.

The 2nds record now falls to 4-2, and they will have to win the rest of their games this season to have a chance at winning the competition. They hope to work towards this starting next week against Knox Grammar.

10As

The 10As come into this round with an undefeated record of 5-0, and they hope to continue this undefeated streak against a tough Barker opponent. Waverley’s leaders stood up for them this game led by Nico Palacio’s tenacity on defence, Jonte Garvey’s rebounding and finishing, and Francesco Scarpa’s scoring in the post. They were able to beat Barker convincingly with a 43-23 win where defence was the standout for the team.

9As

The 9As played a tough Barker team. The team played a strong game, however Barker was able to outmatch them. They were led by Oli Lau and Malachai Rangan, as they unfortunately lost 51-37.

8As

The 8As had a close game against Barker, resulting in a 12-point loss that was fought hard until the end by the players. The final result was 44-32 to Barker. Charlie Gibbins’s speed and Max Malley’s defence were able to keep Waverley 8As in the game, but unfortunately, they were unable to pull through with the victory.

7As

Coming into their first game in high school, the 7As played an exceptional game of Basketball, winning by 5 points, with the final result 46-41. Right from the tip-off the players played with all their hearts, diving for every loose ball. Remy Garvey and Lachie Lever helped them get their first win in high school.

Strong Start to the Year

We had a great start to the Term 1 co-curricular activities last weekend and this week. Our Year 7 trials were of a high standard and we were also well represented in Water Polo and in the Basketball Blitz fixtures. This week is our first full round of all activities against Barker.

All students need to ensure they are correctly attired for weekend fixtures and that they are at their games 30 minutes prior as a minimum. For those away fixtures please ensure you allow enough time for busy Sydney traffic on the weekend.

Our 1st XI also played in the CAS T20 South Harbour fixtures last weekend, and played some very exciting Cricket to make the final next Wednesday afternoon, also against Barker. In Waverley’s first fixture they defeated CAS Cricket powerhouses Cranbrook 5/133 – 9/129 and then defeated Trinity 7/123 – 6/96. It would be great to get as many supporters as we can around these boys next Wednesday afternoon.

Just a reminder that next week is the final opportunity to request a change in winter activities for all students. Also, if any student is requesting leave from weekend commitments, this request needs to be emailed to myself and not done via the absence app please. We already have had a number of requests for State Oztag and various surf lifesaving carnivals this Term.

I also want to send best wishes to all of the staff and Year 7 students attending the first camp for the year next week, and I am sure you will have a great time.

Good luck to all activities this weekend.

Captain of Basketball Report

First Five Games of 2023

The first five games on CAS Basketball in 2023 showcased a strong performance by Waverley Basketball. Out of the 178 games played, Waverley emerged victorious in 100 of them, highlighting an overall successful start to the season.

Impressively, Waverley had four teams go undefeated through the first five games. The 4ths, 10As, 10Bs and 8Fs demonstrated exceptional skill and teamwork, securing wins in all of their respective games. These undefeated streaks not only contributed to the overall success of Waverley Basketball but also reflected the dedication and talent of these specific teams.

We also had another five teams with a 4-1 record. The 2nds, 3rds, 5ths, 10Es and 8Es. All these teams will be competing to win the CAS in their respective competitions, so we wish them good luck.

Holiday Tournaments

Throughout the holidays, Waverley hosted several camps and participated in three tournaments. Waverley’s 10As came 3rd overall in their tournament at Shore, beating Barker to claim 3rd place.

For the 2nds, they played in the Newington Classic. The 2nds were reigning champions, having won the tournament last season, and were hoping to defend their title. The 2nds started strong by defeating a tough Newington team in their first game, then followed it up by beating King’s in another physical game. In the 3rd game, Waverley unfortunately lost to Knox, but followed it up by defeating Reddam to come 3rd.

Trinity, Newington, St Augustine’s and King’s Opponents

The Waverley 1sts played in the Trinity Challenge coming up against Sydney Grammar in their first game. Waverley came out the gate with great intensity and was playing hard every possession and kept this momentum going through the whole game, ending the game winning by 30 points. In the 1st second game, they faced a talented Newington team who eventually ended up winning the tournament. The game started with both teams playing physically, though Newington was able to take a 10-point lead and keep it for most of the game, eventually winning the game by 15.

Waverley’s final game of the day was against another tough opponent in St Augustine’s, who started the game playing well. As the game continued, Waverley was able to shrink their lead to get it within 10 points, but unfortunately, it wasn’t enough.

In the final game, Waverley played King’s and got out to a 17-point lead early in the game, but wasn’t able to hold onto this lead and King’s was able to come away with the one-point win.

Annual CAS Blitz Day

Last weekend the 7As, 8As, 9As, 10As and 2nds took part in the annual CAS Blitz Day, where schools play against every other CAS school team in a shortened game format. This provides a good chance for the teams to gain an understanding of how their opponents like to play and what their tendencies are like, which can help them and their players scout the opposing teams for when they play each other later in the season.

Barker Fixtures Ahead

We now look ahead to this coming week and the resumption of the regular CAS Basketball season, with a very tough round of fixtures against Barker.

Last round against Barker, Waverley was successful in winning 24 of the 35 games played against Barker. The 1sts hope to turn things around in the second half of the season, improve their 2-3 record, and enact revenge against Barker after losing by 26 points last time.

For the 2nds however, they hope to continue their four-game win streak as they sit at 4-1 and are in contention to win the CAS. They are also looking to get revenge on Barker, as Barker handed them their only loss of the season so far.

We wish the best of luck to all teams competing this week and especially to all the new Year 7s who are playing their first-ever games for Waverley

Excellence Rewarded

We wish James Dyson-Merwe, 1st V player and captain, congratulations on his incredible achievement of securing a scholarship and earning a spot at the Basketball Centre of Excellence at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra! James will be playing and training with some of the best players and coaches in Australia whilst continuing his schooling in Canberra. James’ hard work, dedication, and undeniable talent have truly paid off, opening doors to exciting opportunities in his basketball journey.

His presence at the Centre of Excellence is well deserved and reflects the hard work he has put in, on and off the court. As he moves on to the next chapter in his basketball life, we hope he continues to hone his skills and embraces every opportunity and experience that comes his way. His success has certainly been an inspiration to us all, and we do not doubt that he will continue to achieve great things! We wish James continued success, joy, and fulfilment in his future basketball endeavours.

School Holiday Achievements

While many of us were holidaying over summer, three of our students were striving for victories in the pool, on the court, at the beach and on the field. I’m delighted to report on their exceptional holiday achievements.

Congratulations to Ryan McNamara (Year 9) who was selected in the NSW team and competed at the 2024 Australian Pool Life Saving Championships in Melbourne. We’re proud that Waverley Old Boy Andrew Bowden (Class of 2001) was his coach.

Ryan had a great championships, and is now a five time Australian Champion after winning gold in all five U14 events, as well as being crowned the U14 Overall Champion.

Congratulations to Cooper Ryan (Year 10) who was selected to play for NSW under 16s at the Australian Indoor Volleyball Championships. He finished with silver after being undefeated in all pool and finals matches.

He also won for the second year in a row, the gold medal at NSW Beach Volleyball Youth Championships (U17s). Selected in the NSW elite squad of 10 boys (he is the youngest), he recently travelled to Adelaide to compete in Australia’s oldest beach volleyball tournament, the adults SA Open. Cooper now plays predominantly in adult tournaments and is the leading points holder in the national rankings for his age.

Congratulations to Kahu Capper (Year 12) who represented New Zealand as the New Zealand Māori Captain for the 2024 Pasifika Youth Cup. Kahu scored an impressive four tries and 14 conversions, resulting in 44 points across four games. Kahu was also awarded the prestigious Pasifika Youth Cup Player of the Tournament.

Congratulations also to James Dyson Merwe (Year 12) who has accepted this week a scholarship to the AIS for Basketball with the possibility of representing Australia at the Junior World Cup being held in Turkey in June this year. Unfortunately, James has had to move to Canberra for this amazing opportunity, leaving behind his Year 12 friends and colleagues. We wish him all the very best in this exciting opportunity.

Captains of Basketball Report

1st V

On Friday, Waverley’s 1st V Basketball had a tough matchup against Trinity Grammar School, coming short with the final score, 72-94. The game was back and forth right from the tip-off, with Trinity coming into the second quarter up by a small margin of points. The 1st V was able to fight back and have a glimpse of victory by the end of the first half, with James Dyson-Merwe leading the team with his scoring.

The second half was led by Trinity, with their defence stopping Waverley from scoring. With the last quarter coming down, Waverley was down and was able to make a quick run with the help of Flynn Busteed and Angus Peshos’s shooting to bring Trinity’s lead down. Unfortunately, it was too late, with Trinity having very great players, the 1st V ended up losing in the end.

Although it wasn’t the way Waverley wanted to end the year, they will come back stronger than ever, next year.

At Waverley, the 2nd V faced off against Trinity to try to secure a 4-1 record for the first half of the season. With a huge amount of effort and grit, they were able to overcome Trinity with the end score, 51-43. The first quarter was a slow one with Trinity playing along with them in a very close game.

After the break, the dynamic duo of Giles Strachan and Hudson Hatchet were able to pull the team up with their defensive presence to take the lead by the end of the first half.

After that, there was no stopping them, as they were able to build a 10-point lead with the help of Rory Donellan’s spectacular performance.

With the win against Trinity, the 2nd V is now sitting on top of the CAS leaderboard, winning four out of five games, hoping to secure the championship next year.

10As

The Waverley 10As already had a lot of momentum coming from being victorious in their previous games to have an undefeated season so far.

Waverley initiated the game very passionately, playing strong on both offence and defence with players such as Jonte Garvey and Nico Palacio playing very well, getting some early scores.

The game was very entertaining to watch, particularly to see such great basketball and talent shown by such a young team. They finished the game with another victory, the final score 34 – 23, and a great way to end the season.

9As

The Waverley 9As played a very strong Trinity team that was an intense, back-and-forth game with all players playing hard on every single play, which gave them momentum going into the second half. Going into the second half Waverley continued to play hard, but Trinity was playing very well and got the win, 26-43.

8As

The 8As played a very good game against Trinity and were playing hard from the first whistle. They continued to play hard throughout the whole game and got a lead going into the second half. They continued to play hard and got a very good win, 50-44.

Congratulations to all the teams with each of them putting all their effort into these games. Good luck to all teams as they head off into the next half of the CAS season.

Last Full Round of Activities for 2023

This coming weekend we have our last full round of activities for the year. We still expect all students to ensure they are at their compulsory fixtures this weekend and maintain their high standards of uniform and behaviour.

Next weekend we will still have two day Cricket fixtures (except for the 9As due to camp), as well as CAS trials for some of our 1sts Water Polo players. A few activities will continue to train over the next couple of weeks, however, the majority of students have their final commitments this weekend.

Captains of Basketball Report

1st V

On Friday night, the Waverley 1st V had hundreds of supporters who came to watch another chapter of the timeless Waverley vs Cranbrook rivalry. With the crowd roaring, Waverley won the tip off straight away and with the entire stadium supporting, the 1sts started the game exceptionally well, moving to a 10-point lead.

1sts Basketball V Cranbrook

Players like Sergej Jakovljevic and Eden Byrd were relentlessly scoring throughout the game, as both teams went on various runs to finish the half with a 39-29 score. As the game continued, and the two opposing team’s crowds kept vigorously cheering to help their teams find the extra effort to win the game, Waverley extended their lead to a game high 19 points, at one stage.

1sts Basketball V Cranbrook

The 4th quarter started with some early nail-biting scores from Cranbrook. As Cranbrook kept cutting the lead down, Waverley started to lose their composure and make reckless plays. Luckily, the rebounding efforts of players like James Dyson Merwe, we were still able to stay in front. As the clock was ticking down, Cranbrook was getting closer and closer, eventually taking the lead with two minutes to go. Waverley held out in the last few minutes as the game kept going back and forth. With Waverley up two, Angus Peshos hit two clutch free throws, to bring us up to a four-point lead.

1sts Basketball V Cranbrook

1sts Basketball V Cranbrook

Finally, Cranbrook had the last possession of the game, and hit an explosive three pointer to cut the game to a one, although it was not enough as time had expired, and Waverley won the game by one point. Waverley’s record now improves to two wins and two losses, and they hope to improve on this in the last game of the year, against premiership favourites and undefeated Trinity Grammar.

2nd V

The Waverley 2nd V had a tough matchup, playing against an undefeated Cranbrook 2nds. Waverley began slow and faced some early adversity which they were able to overcome and play themselves to a good position in the game, going up five at the half.

Coming out of after half time, it was clear Waverley was playing very well, and Cranbrook could just not keep up, with Giles Strachan and Renato Rovacchi being standouts.

Eventually, the game came to an end with a large crowd that had built for the 1sts game supporting. Waverley took the game by 21 points, 60-39, and their record now stands at three wins and one loss. They look to take on a winless Trinity outfit this week.

The Waverley 10As already had a lot of momentum coming off a series of well-played previous games, to enjoy an undefeated season so far. New to the team is Francesco Scarpa, who has just joined Waverley.

Waverley started the game very passionately, playing strong on both offence and defence, with players such as Jonte Garvey and Nico Palacio playing very well, getting some early scores.

The game was very entertaining to watch, to see such great basketball and talent shown from such a young team, as they finished the game off with another victory, with the final score 53-32.

9As

The 9As were able to defeat Cranbrook in a close game at Cranbrook. The team were led by Hayden McAusland. The game went down to the wire, with Waverley being down by two points with a few seconds remaining. With a big clutch shot from Aidan Busteed, a thrilling corner three buzzer-beating shot which gave them the win by one point. They ended up winning 33-32 in a courageous effort, never giving up until the end.

The 8As played a tough Cranbrook team, first thing on Saturday morning. The boys were dominant and organised in the first half, being led by Charlie Gibbins and Maximillian Malley. They ended up winning the game at the crunch, coming over the top of Cranbrook with the final score, 48-46.

Congratulations to all teams, each putting all their effort into every game. Good luck to all teams as they head off into the 5th game of the season for this year against Trinity Grammar’s very strong basketball program.

From the Basketball Supporters’ Club

Last Friday, four lucky Waverley supporters got to enjoy courtside seating at the Waverley-Cranbrook Friday night game.

The Basketball Supporters Club had auctioned VIP seats at the Basketball Season Launch at the start of the season, and the lucky winners enjoyed VIP parking, cushioned courtside seats, free food, drinks and snacks and supporter merchandise. Congratulations to the Byrd family for getting the best seats in the house!

Summer Activities Continue in Term 4

Despite some weather interruptions last weekend, we had another successful round of fixtures against Knox Grammar and St Aloysius’ College. The 1sts and 2nds Basketball both had impressive wins on Friday night and one of the other highlights was Henry Walker’s outstanding 132no against Knox for the 8As Cricket. Our 1sts Water Polo were desperately unlucky after leading for most of the match to lose on the siren, 9-10.

A big congratulations also to James Finegan and Daryus Sione who played for the Gen Blue U16s Academy against Queensland in the Rugby Australia final on Saturday. These boys were part of the successful winning side and James was also awarded the coach’s award for the representative season. Well done also to Ehren Little who was part of the squad but is currently injured.

This Friday evening we are hosting Cranbrook in 1sts and 2nds Basketball. I want to remind any student attending that they have to be in full College Summer uniform and that high standards of behaviour are expected at all times.

From next week, Year 10 are on exams and home study. Year 10, however, are still required to meet their co-curricular requirements.

We have two more full rounds to go, including this weekend, and I know all of our students will finish their 2023 co-curricular activities strongly.

Captains of Basketball Report From Our Three Student Reporters

1st V

Friday, 3 November 2023, the Waverley 1sts played their third CAS fixture against a very tough St Aloysius’ outfit. Starting off the game, Waverley played very well and could not be stopped, gaining a 10-point lead and looking very slick with players like James Dyson Merwe getting a few early scores.

Coming out of the early second quarter, St Aloysius’ went on a run, battling Waverley for dominance in the middle section of the game, however, Waverley was able to fight to a 15-point lead at one point.

Finally, coming into the fourth quarter, St Aloysius’ had a lead of 12 points and Waverley knew they had to come up with some big shots with players like Aren Yaghoubian and Angus Peshos obliging. Waverley started to come back and tied the score 67-67 in the final few minutes, and then hit a clutch three to bring the lead to 70-67.

As St Aloysius’ fought in the remaining minute, they just could not get any scores and Waverley walked away with a win, 71-67. Waverley’s record now improves to one win and two losses, and they hope to improve on that against local rivals Cranbrook in a big Friday night game this week.

2nd V

The Waverley 2nds had a great game against St Aloysius’ and it was one of the most entertaining games so far this CAS season. The game started with players like Renato Rovacchi getting some early scores, and became a back-and-forth game from there onwards with an intimidating St Aloysius’ crowd giving their boys energy to help them to try and win the game.

In the remaining moments of the game, Waverley was losing, but Jock Edwards hit a big three to cut the lead to two, followed up by a steal, a layup, and sinking the free throw to put them up by one. Waverley went on to win the game in the dying moments. The 2nds record improves to two wins and one loss.

10As

The Waverley 10As played a very good game against St Aloys, playing hard from the first possession and being led by great interior finishing from Francesco Scarpa. The 10As were very able to keep applying the pressure throughout the game from great scoring by Ratu-Gosho Vishanin. Nico Palacio’s lockdown defence was crucial in denying key St Aloysius’ players from scoring throughout the game. Because of a great team effort, Waverley got the win 61-21 and their record improved to 3-0.

9As

The 9As played a great game against St Aloysius’ with the game going back and forth with numerous lead changes and all players playing very well, especially Hayden McAusland. Unfortunately, St Aloysius’ was able to pull away, winning 30-23.

8As

The Waverley 8As played an amazing game against St Aloysius’ as both teams played hard throughout the whole game, with neither team wanting to lose. Unfortunately in the second half, St Aloysius’ was able to pull away, winning 49-36. A great performance by Darcy Kidd and Charlie Gibbins helped them stay in the game and be competitive.

Congratulations to all our teams, with each of them putting all their effort into their games. Good luck to all teams as they head off into the fourth round of the season.

Waverley College Cricket v St Aloysius’ – 4 November 2023

A rain-affected weekend saw only a few teams take part in some play.

Our 1st XI are in a decent position at 4/156 after 62 overs at stumps on Day 1. Captain, Hunter Eldridge, demonstrated his maturity with an impressive 63, while Will Livissianis remained unbeaten on 40.

In the 8As, Henry Walker followed up last week’s 83 against Knox to pile on an incredible 138 from only 93 balls. Well done Henry, a first of many Waverley hundreds. We look forward to drier weather for Day 2 this coming Saturday.

In the 10As, Aidan Herlihy took 5 for 28 off 15 balls.

Captains of Basketball Report

1st V

Saturday, 28 October 2023, Waverley 1sts played the second round of CAS against a very tough Knox Grammar School team, and unfortunately lost the game 104 to 68. It was a very intense game to start, with Waverley going up in the first quarter 24 to 18 dominating the rebounds, and Sergej Jakovljevic hitting a few three-pointers.

The game continued on with many players battling like Tashi Harrison, but Knox was playing really well and went on a good run at the end of the second quarter to pull in front. James Dyson-Merwe’s interior dominance was once again big for Waverley.

Unfortunately, as the game went on, the 1sts just couldn’t match Knox’s intensity on defence and offence, weren’t able to find their run to get back into the game, and ended up losing to Knox. The 1sts will look to bounce back against St Aloysius’ College in a big Friday night game at Milsons Point.

2nd V

The Waverley 2nds played a very good game, especially on the defensive end, which ended up leading to transition points, giving Waverley a good lead early on. The defensive presence was led by Hudson Hatchet, who was a pest on defence, getting steals and turning them into transition points.

The second half kicked off and Knox just couldn’t find an answer for Waverley, led by Renato Rovacchi as the main scoring presence, playing with a lot of energy on offence and defence, which helped Waverley pull away the game with a win 55 – 40. The 2nds record now improves to 1-1 as they hope to continue their winning next week against St Aloysius.’

10As

Waverley’s 10As had a strong game, notching up another great victory on top of the previous week’s wins against Barker and Trinity. They started off the game very strong with Ratu Gosho Vishanin showing his ability to score points.

The whole game was very entertaining to watch, with players like Jonte Garvey battling through the whole game, to bring the final score to 81 – 18 to Waverley.

9As

Waverley’s 9As had a tough game against a strong Knox team. The whole team fought until the final whistle, led by Aidan Busteed’s defence and Gabriel Hrzina’s scoring, but unfortunately couldn’t pull away with the win, going down 18 to 45 in favour of Knox.

8As

The 8As also played a very strong Knox side and experienced a back-and-forth game, with many lead changes for both teams, however Knox was able to pull away in the second half with a lot of transition points. This resulted in a loss for Waverley, going down 23-39 at the final siren.

Last round, Waverley enjoyed a 68% win ratio against Barker across all games, however against perennial CAS Basketball powerhouse, Knox, we were only able to achieve a 25% win ratio.

Congratulations to all the teams, with each of them putting all their effort into these games every week. Good luck to all teams as they head into their third games of the season.

A special thank you goes to Mr Gibbs, Mr Johnston and all the coaching staff who have made a tremendous effort for the season so far.

Term 4 Summer Activities

It was a really positive start to the season with our first full round of fixtures last weekend. A huge thank you to all of the wonderful parent supporters who were working on the BBQ at the College and also those parents down at Queens Park with the 1st XI Cricket.

We head into our second round this weekend and including this Saturday, the majority of students have four rounds left for the calendar year. The last round of activities for most students will be on Saturday, 18 November 2023.

I would also like to remind the community of the processes for leave request and absenteeism please:

Manchester City Football Club Trophy Tour

A couple of weeks ago we had a visit from the Manchester City Football Club with the four premiership trophies they hold. Most students were able to view these and we took a number of photos.

Home Game

We have a big home game this weekend against Knox with our two day Cricket playing their second day. Aarush Soni taking 6/72 in the 1st XI was certainly one of the highlights of last weekend.

Good luck to all teams and activities this weekend.

Captains of Basketball Report

Knox and Barker Invitational Tournaments

The Barker Invitational Tournament provided an incredible experience for the 8As and 9As, as they had the opportunity to play against the best basketball schools from GPS and CAS competitions. The event was not only a chance to showcase their skills as a team, but also allowed them to grow both as individuals and as a team. Unfortunately, the 10As did not have a tournament, but they were still able to hone their skills, through a three-hour team training session that was greatly attended.

The Knox Invitational Tournament was an opportunity for the 1st V and 2nd V trialists to compare their level of basketball to other schools from different associations before the start of the season. The 2nds had a decent tournament finishing 7th, winning two games, and losing three. The 1sts struggled with six injuries, had to battle with just seven players with courageous efforts, but unfortunately finished 9th, winning one game and losing four.

1st V

Round 0 vs Trinity

On 14 October, Waverley went up against Trinity in their final preparation before the season started. It was a great opportunity to see what they needed to work on before round 1. Unfortunately, Waverley lost 96 to 58 to a very strong Trinity team, that is one of the favourites to take out the CAS competition this season.

It was a very intense start to the game. Waverley and Trinity were going point for point in a tightly contested first quarter, with Trinity in the lead 22-18. The second quarter was much the same, led the way by Sergej Jakovljevic’s scoring, with Trinity extending the lead to four points from a buzzer-beating shot going into half time.

However, the second half was very disappointing for Waverley, as the game gradually started slipping away, Trinity’s dominance on defence and ability to score the ball in transition was what made it hard for the students to stay in the game. James Dyson Merwe’s interior presence was much needed, although Trinity ended up winning big, in a 38-point dominant victory. The team turned their focus to the Barker game for CAS Round 1 and were hoping to bounce back to win their first game of the season.

1st Basketball v Trinity

1st Basketball V Trinity

2nd V

Waverley 2nds also played their last pre-season game against Trinity before the season opener which provided a good opportunity to understand how to play together. It was a good win for Waverley and a great confidence boost going into the CAS season, winning the game 71-65. It was a back-and-forth game as both teams were unwilling to give up, and kept playing their hardest throughout, but ultimately Waverley pipped their opponents to win by seven points.

Giles Strachan helped with his amazing 26-point performance to help the 2nds get the win over Trinity going into their season opener. Waverley was able to keep the pressure on Trinity, which overall was able to get them the win. Waverley’s interior defence was able to force Trinity into taking tough shots which made Waverley’s job easier, as Caelum Brook’s defence made it hard for Trinity to score at a consistent pace, and allowed Waverley to get easy points in transition.

Round 1 vs Barker

Saturday, 21 October was the 2023/2024 CAS Basketball season opener, where Waverley’s 1st V faced off against Barker in a well-fought, intense battle. Unfortunately, Barker was able to beat Waverley 79 to 53.

It was a back-and-forth start to the game, with the score moving between 15 to 8 points difference in the first three quarters in Barker’s favour. The students were confident going into the fourth quarter down by just 8.

James Dyson Merwe’s dominance in the paint was able to keep Waverley in the game. Barker was able to come out aggressive in the fourth quarter, and stretched the lead out to the 20s, and ended up securing their first win of the season by 26 points. The students will face off against Barker once more early next year at home at Waverley, where they hope to attain a victory.

2nd V

The 2nd faced off against Barker for their season opener in a well-fought contest that was back and forth for most of the game. After a hard-fought game between the two teams, Barker beat Waverley 36 to 55.

There were a number of lead changes during the first three quarters of the game, however unfortunately for Waverley, they fell down into the 4th, unable to keep up with the fast play from Barker.

Hudson Hatchett’s defensive intensity was able to help Waverley stay in the game by providing them with extra time with the ball. Barker was able to outwork Waverley in the second half, which gave them a small lead that Waverley couldn’t come back from, which ultimately led to the 19-point loss.

10A

For the 10As, Barker was going to be a hard matchup. The game was played at Waverley, and it started very strong with a few early scores from Nico Palacio and Jonte Garvey, which gave Waverley the lead.

The game carried on with everyone from Waverley playing well, and we ended up pulling away with a 51-26 win for the first round of CAS.

9A

The 9As, led Mr Tom Kennedy as coach, had a very tough matchup against Barker. With some great talent, the game started well with both teams looking good, but unfortunately for Waverley, we just couldn’t match Barker for the entirety of the game. The final score was a 44-22 loss.

 8A

The 8As started off their game at Barker with ample spectators watching on, as they experienced a very competitive matchup against their opponents. As they battled for the first half, Maximilian Malley was able to post a few nice points, however they went into half-time down by a few points.

Despite this adversity, the 8As worked hard and battled their way to the end, eventually winning the game 27-22.

Good Luck

Good luck to all teams as they face off against Knox Grammar School in the second round of CAS Basketball this season.
