Congratulations to Hirav Gandhi of Year 11 for being selected in the CAS 1st XI to play against the ISA 1st XI at St Aloysius’ College Oval last Sunday. Although the rain impacted play on Sunday, the College is still very proud of Hirav and his selection.
Further congratulations and best wishes go to both Jonathon and Toby McDonald who have been selected in the CAS U/15 team that will play against arch-rivals, GPS, at St Joseph’s College this Sunday, 6 March. Well done to both McDonald boys. They have consistently been amongst Waverley’s top performers, and genuinely love their cricket.

1sts
The 1sts experienced a back and forth game against Trinity on Friday night, with the Trinity players and Old Boys boisterous all game. After blocking out the crowd noise, the 1sts took a narrow lead early in the game, and held onto to a 2-4 point lead for the majority of the first half, until Trinity made a run at the end of the half, which resulted in Waverley being down by 5 at half time.
Waverley came out strong in the 2nd half, full of energy and bringing the intensity, however Trinity’s intensity and energy also rose due to Waverley’s clear intent. Trinity were able to hold onto this lead for most of 3rd and 4th quarter, until a few quick 3s and fastbreak layups for Trinity and missed shots from Waverley, saw them close the game out and win by 15.
The final score was 83-68, with Marko Rangan contributing 20 points, Tom Gleeson 15 and Sergej Jakovljevic 8.
2nds
The 2nds had a tough-fought game as well on Friday night, that started with multiple 3s being made by Solomon Tuqiri and James Jones. After back and forth 1st and 2nd halves, Trinity took the lead late, and after plenty of missed free throws by Waverley, the 2nds were unable to close the game out late.
The final score was 36-30, with Solomon Tuqiri, Ashar Te Rata and Dakota Fanning standing out on the night.
Juniors – 7As, 8As, 9As, 10As
Two of the Junior As teams got on the board with a win this past weekend over Trinity.
The 7As got up 45-34, led by Hayden McAusland, Dominic Dametto and Duke Thomas.
The 8As also mounted a victory, 38-26, with standout players including Jonte Garvey, Xavier Koster and Nico Palacio.
The 9As had a 13 point loss, 33-46, and despite this, great games were played by Hugo Perks, Renato Rovacchi and Ricky Meyrick.
The 10As were also unable to get the job done, going down 31-44, with solid games from Caelum Brook, Jock Edwards and Aren Yaghoubian.
Other Victorious Teams
Other teams that were victorious included: 8th V (39-30), 10B (45-21), 10C (37-30), 10D (35-23), 10E (33-28), 10F (43-21), 9B (45-26), 9C (34-33), 8C (23-20), 8G (32-12), 7B (30-16), 7D (34-12), 7E (44-16), and 7G (35-22), with the 7Cs (31-all) and 7Hs (28-all) experiencing exciting draws in their games.
Good luck to all teams as they take on Barker this weekend.

Last week saw some great performances across a number of activities. Some of the highlights included our 1sts and 2nds Basketball both having great wins last Friday evening, and our 10As Touch Football winning all of their round robin matches against some high-quality opposition last Saturday. Our 7A Water Polo were also fantastic in their 13-3 victory against Cranbrook.
Well done also to Hirav Gandhi in the 1st XI Cricket side, who has been selected to represent CAS Cricket this Sunday.
We have also now concluded our winter activity change requests, and all students who have applied, will be notified this week of their selections. We will not be accepting any more requests, as we now have to organise staffing and training schedules, as well as notify opposition schools of our team numbers.
Any student who wishes to apply for a summer activity change for Term 4, will need to do so in the first three weeks of Term 3.
Next Friday, 4 March, we will be holding our annual House Swimming Carnival at Botany Aquatic Centre. This is a really important event for our House system, as well as a final opportunity for some of our swimming talent to prove themselves before the CAS Swimming and Diving championships on Thursday, 17 March.
There will be limited transport to the venue, however, all students are encouraged to make their own way to and from the venue, where possible. If there are any cancellations due to weather on the day, the wet weather line will be updated by 7am. If the carnival is cancelled, it will be a normal Friday Week B school day.
Unfortunately, we are unable to accommodate parent spectators at the venue.
>>> Click here to view important information about the House Swimming Carnival.
With the wet weather this week, I also want to remind parents, carers and students of the wet weather processes.
The wet weather line (8250 3780) will be updated throughout the day on a Saturday, however, the Waverley College app is the recommended source for these changes, because push notifications will be sent as soon as changes/cancellations occur.
If you don’t have the Waverley College app, and your subscriptions are incorrect, you will miss out on vital communications from the College.
To update your subscriptions and tags on the Waverley College app:
COVID-19 restrictions for school sporting venues on Saturdays will also continue to remain in place for this term.
Best wishes to all students competing in the State Age Surf Life Saving titles this weekend. Please keep the College updated on any successes and performances!

The College is delighted to announce that the Batting Club has returned for the rest of the summer sport season, catering to teams in Years 8 and 9. The Batting Club is an optional session for players looking to develop their batting skills.
The first of these sessions was held last Wednesday morning, where many of the College’s aspiring young cricketers took part in various technical drills designed by Pro Performance Cricket Senior Coach, David Dawson. David is a former Tasmania and New South Wales representative whose knowledge and experience is invaluable.
Batting Club will be provided to the Years 8 and 9 players every Wednesday morning until the end of the season. However, it is the College’s intention to provide this session for students in Year 7 and Year 10, once there is more clarity surrounding COVID-19 safety at schools. Please check the Waverley app for notices regarding this.
Last weekend, Waverley College faced a determined and highly skilled Cranbrook school in round two of the CAS competition. Although it was not the most successful day in terms of competition points, it was especially enjoyable to witness many laughs and cheers across the Queens Park pitches.
Year 10A
In the Year 10A match, Hunter Elridge struck again to take another three wickets for the second time in two weekends. Hunter’s ability to seam the ball accurately has been troubling many opposition batsmen, and this resulted in a pinpointed top of off stump first wicket. Unfortunately, the Year 10A simply ran out of overs and couldn’t chase down Cranbrook’s 7/143.
Year 9A
Unsurprisingly, the Year 9A team was successful yet again. Benjamin Van Dam was the most agile in the field, taking an incredible four catches. This aided Toby McDonald’s outstanding 5/7 off just under five overs. Well done, Toby!
Other Notable Performances
Other notable performances across the day were Fred Robertson’s 42 and Cruz Cooke’s hard-fought 61. Both players have deserved this great result, and it is a reflection of their hard work and love of cricket. Moreover, well done to the entire Year 7B team, which recorded Waverley’s second win for the day.
Although not every team won on the weekend, it is important that as a cricket community we ensure we remain focused on boosting enjoyment and developing player skills. These objectives have been a priority for myself and the coaches over the recent season.
Therefore, I am tremendously grateful for the ongoing contribution of coaches, players and parents, in supporting the College’s cricket program in its endeavour for future success.
This weekend Waverley faces Trinity Grammar, with the 1st XI playing away and the 2nd XI at Queens Park. Good luck to all teams!

On Friday, the 1sts faced off in a thriller that became a 20-point win by Waverley, led by Marko Rangan (39 points), Cameron Abbott and Daniel Palacio, with the final score being 65–85.
Cranbrook had a roaring crowd that the Waverley players were able to overcome. In the first quarter, the game was tight, with Waverley having a two-point lead at the end. By the end of the second quarter, the students had secured a 15-point lead. The game flew away from there, with Waverley in charge of the game until the end.
Next Friday, the 1sts are hoping to secure their second win of the CAS season, against an always competitive Trinity outfit.
On Friday, the 2nds also recorded a victory, after coming back from a 16-point deficit, led by Toby Longmire, Jake Mckell and Cooper Stynes.
Apart from the opening minutes, where Waverley jumped out to a seven-point lead, Cranbrook led the entire game, until the final minutes of the fourth quarter, where the Waverley players’ desire to win was greater.
Charlie Smith scored the go-ahead bucket in the final 30 seconds. With the end score being 54-50, the 2nds are so far going strong in their CAS season, and are hoping to notch up their third win against Trinity on Friday.
The rest of our elite junior teams did not fare so well, with the 10As losing by seven points, with the final score being 31–38. Standout players were Tashi Harrison, Aren Yaghoubian and Hudson Hatchett.
The 9As also fell short with the end score being 38–58, the star players being Joseph Dametto, Benjamin Pignatelli and Tamen Peralta.
The 8As unfortunately lost, the final score being 30–38, with great games from Tane Barclay, Petros Kalpouzanis and Jonte Garvey.
Congratulations to the 7As, who won with a score of 30–19 off the back of a great team effort.
Other teams that were victorious included: 10B (54-30), 10C (43-30), 10D (34-31), 10G (42-12), 9H (24-11), 8B (36-16), 8G (24-17), 8H (44-7), 7B (32-14), 7C (33-31), 7D (25-18), 7E (40-10), 7F (22-20), 7G (20-14) and 7H (48-6).
Good luck to all teams as they take on Trinity this weekend.

Our first full round of CAS summer sport for quite some time was successful, and it was great to see all players and coaches representing the College well.
Some of the highlights included some impressive results in all Cricket with the 1sts, 9A and B, 8A and B, and all three Year 7 teams victorious. In addition, we had some great wins in Basketball across all grades.
Our Swimming and Diving squads also competed at the CAS Invitational at Homebush on Friday night. Many members of the swim squad performed well, as did our divers, with Milan Mann placing 3rd in the intermediate competition.
This week we also had our Year 7s spend three days at Somerset Camp on the Colo River, and from all reports, these students had a great time.
Well done to those students that competed in the State Oz-Tag competition last weekend, and I also want to wish those students competing at the State Touch Football tournament this weekend, the very best.
I am aware that we have a number of talented surf lifesavers competing at the State titles at Manly next weekend, and if an exemption has not yet been requested, can I please urge families to ensure that this is done urgently. Please note that students are entitled to two exemptions throughout the year.
Next week we will be taking Summer Sports photos on the Tennis courts before and after school. We will match the photo schedule as best as we can to the training schedule, however, all students will be required to wear their playing attire for these photos.
Our Water Polo players will need to wear their PE attire. All photos will be taken on the Tennis Courts. Our swimming and diving squads will have their team photo taken on the day of the CAS Championships.
>>> Click here to view the photo schedule.
This week we are away to Cranbrook, and a reminder to all students, coaches and parents, that the CAS Codes of Conduct are developed to ensure good sportsmanship at all times.
COVID-19 protocols will continue to apply this term, that include only one parent per player at any indoor venue, with masks to be worn at all times. QR coding and vaccination status for adults will also be requested at all venues. Any person showing any symptoms, is a close contact or has been asked to isolate must not attend.
All students should now be fully attired in the correct summer playing attire for all fixtures. This uniform is available in the College Uniform Shop. You can find information about the Uniform Shop at the end of every edition of Nurrunga in the ‘Important Links’ section.
This week was also the last opportunity for students to request a change to their winter activities. No more requests will be accepted from next week. Students who have not requested a change, will just have last season’s winter activities roll over to this year.
On Friday, 4 March we have our House Swimming Carnival at Botany Aquatic Centre, with further information published from next week.
Good luck to all teams this week!

Well done to all Waverley Cricket teams, who took part in the first round of the CAS competition against St Aloysius.’ Waverley recorded success in the 1st XI, 9A, 9B, 8A, 8B and the Year 7 teams. Furthermore, an added congratulations to all Year 7 teams is warranted, as they represented the Senior School for the first time. The energy and skill that has been apparent over the past few weeks, brings excitement for the years ahead.
The 1st XI showed grit to hold off a determined chase by St Aloysius’ in what was a nailbiter of a match. The day began with a baggy blue cap presentation led by Mr O’Donnell, Mr Kroll, and former Waverley student, coach and teacher, Mr John Boyd.
Thank you to Mr Boyd for imparting his words of wisdom to the team, and inspiring them all to be leaders on and off the field. Mr Boyd featured in multiple Archer Shield wins during his time as a student at the College, and as a former coach of the 1st XI. Moreover, he spoke of his time playing cricket for Waverley, and challenged the team to be competitive, but to place enjoyment of the game at the forefront of team goals.
Waverley batted first with Eddie Regan and Hirav Gandhi setting the pace early on. However, both were dismissed before they were able to truly open up. Maxim Brooks was also out early with a deceptive full toss hitting the pads. Will Dodd and Jack Rigg then came to the crease, and worked to put pressure back on Aloysius’ with aggressive running between the wickets. Will Dodd reached 43 before he was caught, and Jack Rigg was unfortunately run out due to some miscommunication. Daniel McSweeny (caught for 17), William Hickey (caught for 24), and Carter Steyn (not out for 10), then rounded Waverley up into a double century total of 8/202.
Nonetheless, St Aloysius’ came into bat with a keenness to put the pressure back on Waverley, by maintaining a steady run rate. The two openers began to make life a little difficult for Waverley, as the outfield began to dry up and boundaries became more of an option. However, it was Connor Andrews who got the breakthrough for Waverley, and the wickets then slowly became more achievable as the Aloysius’ batsmen fell behind Waverley’s run rate. Hirav was impressive, taking two wickets for 23 runs off five overs, and Will Dodd again stood up to take three wickets off only four overs. Aloysius’ simply ran out of overs and reached a total of 175.
Unfortunately, the 2nd XI and the Year 10A were washed out due to the heavy rain across North Sydney. However, well done to Hunter Elridge of Year 10 who took 3/10 off six overs whilst also carrying his bat to score 51 of 108 balls. Jonathon McDonald of the Year 9A team also helped his team seek out a hard fought win with a score of 42.
Growing numbers across all teams, and the ongoing commitment to training that is ever present, is a fantastic sign for the future success of this season. Thank you to all coaches, players and parents for their support and preparation in the lead up to the start of the CAS season.
I am looking forward to seeing the development of all teams displayed over the coming weeks. This Saturday, the College will play against a well-drilled Cranbrook School for CAS points. The Year 7C team will play another T/20 game against Newington, at home. I wish all teams the very best.

As we start this year’s shortened Basketball season against our first round opponents, St Aloysius’, we would like to share some achievements that occurred over the holiday period.
All teams had two rounds of trials before the end of Term 4 against Cranbrook and Trinity. The 1sts and 2nds teams were able to win all four of their games, due to the great performances of Aodan Byrne, Cooper Stynes and Solomon Tuquiri from the 2nds, and Marko Rangan, Sergej Jakovljevic and Tom Gleeson from the 1sts.
1sts and 2nds also completed in a two-day intensive training camp with the High Performance squad, which was then followed by a one-day tournament at Alexandria Basketball Stadium. This was a great three days for both teams, as they gained more game experience before Round 1 commenced, which helped to overcome the lack of games in Term 4 due to COVID-19.
In late January, 1sts, 2nds and High Performance players participated in another two-day camp, which was then followed by a two-day tournament. 1sts played in the Trinity Challenge, and the 2nds played in the Newington Classic. Both teams were unlucky with their results, but with players missing and still getting used to each other, they were hoping to turn things around in Round 1 of the CAS.
A big congratulations goes to 1st’s player Marko Rangan on being selected in the U18 NSW Metro team. They will compete later this year in the National Championships.
Another congratulations goes to our Head Coach, Mr Johnston and his wife, on having their first child.
Round 1 against St Aloysius’ at Waverley started in a great way, with the 2nds having a tight win. It was within five points almost the whole game, until Solomon Tuqiri and Charlie Smith hit back-to-back corner three-pointers to extend Waverley’s lead to 10. After great team defence and intensity, they were able to close out the game in great fashion for their first win of the season.
With the intensity and energy still high from the 2nds game, the 1sts were looking to beat St Aloysius’, three years in a row. The first half was very back and forth with St Aloysius’ holding a four-point lead the whole way until half time, where they managed to go on a run and be up by 11. After trying to claw back the lead for the entirety of the 3rd quarter, Waverley went on a quick 10-0 run, thanks to Daniel Palacio and Hugo Roles, and brought it back to within seven points. However, St Aloysius’ were too good, and picked their intensity right up, and finished the game strong. Great games were played by Sergej Jakovljevic and Daniel Palacio.
The rest of the As teams were unlucky as well, with all being defeated. The 7As went down 16-43 with great first games for the College from Phil Falaniko, Otto Murcutt and Duke Thomas. The 8As had a closer game, only losing by 12 points with Angus Peshos, Tane Barclay and Xavier Koster all having standout games. The 9As were within single digits, and were just beaten by eight points, 24-32, with Renato Rovacch, Ben Pignatelli and Giles Strachan having fantastic games. The 10As lost in a mighty effort, as they were only narrowed out by six points, despite Aren Yaghoubian, Hudson Hatchett and Ricardo Zanapalis all contributing in a big way.
In other games, the following teams enjoyed first-up wins against St Aloysius’: 7th V (27-19), 8th V (50-34), 10G (26-14), 9B (37-27), 9D (19-8), 9E (31-20), 9G (42-6), 9H (26-9), 8C (25-24), 8D (22-12), 8G (22-13), 7B (28-13), 7E (23-16) and 7G (36-32).
As we look ahead to this weekend against our Eastern Suburbs Rivals, we hope to better our performances from last week, starting on Friday night when Cranbrook host the 1sts and 2nds.
If anyone is interested in undertaking an externally accredited Beginners Basketball Referee course, please see Mr Gibbs in the TAS staffroom for more details, and to register your interest.

This week, we have our first full round of CAS Summer sport against St Aloysius’. This will be the first time in quite a while that we are actually playing a competitive round, and I am sure all students, parents and coaches are excited about this.
We do still have a number of COVID-19 protocols in place, and all students and parents need to ensure they are meeting the following requirements:
It was great to see our first ever Sailing group last Saturday undertake their new activities. From all reports, it was a wonderful initiative, led by the students. This is certainly a sport to grow in the future, and Waverley actually has a number of Old Boys who are currently sailing at a national level.
With some wet weather forecast at the end of this week, it is important for parents and students to have the Waverley College App on their phones, or ring the wet weather line. Please also note that whilst it may be wet in one area of Sydney, this does not mean that games elsewhere are called off.
The app can be downloaded from your app store. Please use the following instructions to download and set up the app:
>>> Click here to download the instructions.
All students must also now be fully attired in the full summer playing kits for this weekend please.
Well done also to our 1sts and A teams that competed in various Blitz matches last week. Also a reminder that any student who wishes to nominate for any CIS trials, will need to check the College website for dates as well as fixtures and training schedules.
Good luck to all teams and students this weekend!

Well done to Waverley College 1st XI at the CAS T/20 Competition held at Trinity Grammar over the weekend. The day consisted of two games: the first against Trinity Grammar and the second against Cranbrook.
Waverley won the first game against Trinity via the Duckworth-Lewis method, as rain caused numerous delays across the day. Trinity batted first and were bowled out for 73.
Daniel McSweeny took 3/6 off 3 overs as he opened up the bowling attack. The rest of Trinity were mopped up by Hirav Ghandi’s 1/11, Sachiel Bass’ 1/9, Will Dodd’s 2/6, and a brilliant spell from Connor Andrews who took 3/12 off 4 overs.
Waverley batted second and was sitting on a comfortable 5/45 at the tenth over as the rain set in. Waverley were then determined the winner.
Well done to Jack George of Year 10 for gaining his first experience in the 1st XI. Jack took a catch on debut and I am looking forward to seeing Jack grow as a player over the next couple of years.
Waverley’s second match was against the favourite, Cranbrook. Although Waverley could not defeat Cranbrook, it was again pleasing to see the positive attitude that the men of the 1st XI continue to bring, when faced with a challenging opponent.
Waverley batted first and reached a total of 8/79. Eddie Regan showed his attacking flair, but was run out prematurely for 34, and Carter Steyn was out LBW for 15.
Cranbrook then chased down Waverley to end up 2/83 with Carter Steyn and Eddie Regan involved again to both take a wicket each. Notably, Carter Steyn was impressive in his ability to tie down and then bowl out one of Cranbrook’s representative players.
Lastly, thank you to the coaches Mr Kroll and Reid McNamara for their work over the day. Good luck to all teams as they prepare for their first competition game against St Aloysius’ at Queens Park this Saturday.
