Tennis Report – Final Round for Summer 2018

From Captain of Tennis, Kiva Gwynne

The final matchup of the 2018 summer tennis season was a tough one for the Waverley Tennis boys, with Barker taking out the majority of fixtures across the board.

The 1sts and 2nds were both subdued 8 sets to 0, with the opposition evidently too strong for the Waverley boys. Lachlan Unsworth almost broke the duck in a close singles set, in which he was edged 4 games to 6.  The 3rds and 4ths both lost 6-0, with Arturo Montesinos coming ever so close to victory in a tiebreaker loss. A special mention goes to Mrs. Unsworth and the parents for the 1sts and 2nds, who have been dedicated to providing magnificent morning teas for the open’s home games.

The Year 7’s have continued their hot form, especially the 7C’s, who won 4 sets to 2 (33-16). The doubles pairing of Jo Jo Cumpston and Jonas Dowling could not be stopped as they completely battered their Barker counterparts 6-0, both going on to win their singles matches 6-0 and 6-2, respectively. The 7D’s were unfortunate to lose 6 sets to 0.

Whilst the 8A’s were defeated 6 sets to 0, the 8B’s turned it around as they won by the closest margin possible – 3 sets all, 30 games to 29. Aidan Trovato put in a valiant effort in winning all of his sets: his singles 6-4, and doubles 6-2 with Cuba Kanakis. 8C’s and D’s both lost 6 sets to 0.  The year 9 and 10 teams all lost 6 sets to 0, with the best effort coming from Oscar Madden and Nathan Barry, who lost their doubles 5-7 in the 9A’s.

As the season concludes, a huge thanks goes to Coach Steve Day, Ms. Attard, and all of the teachers and students who have contributed to a memorable summer of tennis across all age groups and teams.  Leading into winter pre-season training, the Waverley Tennis boys are anticipating a successful winter season.
