This week with our Year 12s on Trials, it was a delight to see our Year 11 students stepping in to organise some inter-house activities. A Senior and Junior Basketball competition was held over the past week with some outstanding skills and sportsmanship shown throughout the games.

Congratulations to Lacey House who won the Junior division and to Brennan House who were victorious in the Senior division. There were many close competitions between the Houses throughout the knock out competition and the support from other members of the Houses was terrific.

Thank you to all those Heads of House and Year 11 students who worked to make our competition so enjoyable. Well done!

Vale Tim Ella

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of local Indigenous Elder and La Perouse man, Timothy Ella.

Tim Ella

Tim Ella

Tim was a legend and strong advocate and supporter for Waverley College’s Indigenous programs, that included educating many of our students in the local history of First Nations peoples in the area, bush tucker as well as helping out with Indigenous Round celebrations in sport.

We send our sincerest condolences to his friends and family. Tim was the youngest brother of Wallaby Rugby legends Mark, Glen and Gary as well as brother Trevor. Tim chose a Rugby League pathway like his cousin Steve Ella.

CAS Round 5 Vs Trinity Grammar School

Waverley College played against Trinity Grammar last weekend in the final fixture of the season. On the day, from the 15 matches played against Trinity, Waverley managed to win a total of 14. A near perfect way to complete the season.

1st XV Match

The 1st XV match was an entertaining match with both sides throwing the ball around. Waverley proved to be too good on the day and the Double V got to finish the season with one final ‘Custard Pie.’

It was a special day for all our Year 12 students who played their final match in the Blue and Gold Jersey. Pleasingly, all our Opens teams secured enjoyable victories under sunny skies – which was a welcome change to the wet conditions we felt throughout the 2022 season.

We thank all our Year 12 players for their efforts in representing Waverley College. We also thank all the parents and carers for the wonderful support they gave Waverley College on the sidelines for many years.

Our new recruits surpassed all expectations at their first parade on Friday. I was so impressed with their respect for the uniform, with their engagement in the activities, with their first attempts at drill moves and with their respect for each other and their rank. Congratulations and very well done!

Across the afternoon, there were competitions to encourage all to get to know one other in their sections, platoons and companies. Recruits met their rank and staff, and were issued with their Company patches. All performed admirably in the Company War Cry Competition.

Congratulations, also, to our senior rank as they put into practice their leadership training to lead their Companies and the Command Post so smoothly at their first parade, and to our SNCOs and JNCOs for taking such good care of their new platoons and sections.

Points will be awarded for activities and conduct across the term, and the best platoon at the end of each term will scoop the prize. Points also contribute towards the LTCOL Peter Frost Company Cup and the MAJ F D Marzorini Shield for the Most Efficient Platoon, awarded at the Annual Awards Ceremony at the end of the Cadet Year.

Cybersafety Hub

Cybersafety is an increasing challenge for parents with so many applications and social media platforms being accessed by our children. Whilst we may be aware of the most common ones, do we actually know what these platforms offer our children, and the potential challenges they could face in using them ?

At Waverley, we believe that parents need to have the knowledge to have appropriate conversations and understand how to manage access in their particular circumstances.

To assist with this, Waverley developed a Cybersafety Hub with our partners ySafe. The hub contains information on current trending platforms and applications, and is updated regularly by ySafe staff, who review and give clear and understandable information that make parents better informed.

>>> Click here to view the Cybersafety Hub.

Waverley also offers access to the FamilyZone product on all school-issued laptops, which can also be extended to student mobile devices.

Final Winter Co-Curricular Sport Round

I’d like to wish all Junior teams the best of luck tomorrow in their final round for the Winter Co-Curricular season. It has been the first winter season of sport that has gone uninterrupted due to COVID-19 since 2019, excluding the amount of rain we experienced.

I’d particularly like to thank all families for their ongoing support towards their son’s commitment to playing sport at Waverley College. It is an integral part of these boys’ development, and strongly promotes our students to live active and healthy lifestyles each and every day.

I’d also like to mention and thank all the coaches for their continued commitment to giving our students the opportunity to better their skills, in a fun and safe environment each week.

There have been nail-biting games, continual highlights and some lowlights, but students gave their absolute all and demonstrated teamwork, positive sportsmanship, resilience and pride to be representing Waverley College. Bring on 2023 Winter Sport at Waverley!

Winter Co-Curricular Presentation Nights

All families of sons receiving an award have been informed about the presentation nights for their respective sports. These students and families are invited to attend, and it will be a great opportunity to connect with the Senior School and celebrate the Winter sport season.

FunRun Fundraiser

School FunRun

The FunRun Fundraiser has seen some amazing achievements within two week of the fundraising period. Two weeks into the event, I’m thrilled to share the following milestones reached:

  1. $40,600 fundraised in the first two weeks (having now reached our school target of $30,000!)
  2. 257 out of 314 students have signed up with profiles
  3. 752 total donations received
  4. Leo Henderson (5 Blue) has raised $2,330 and Jack Mihalakis (6 Blue) has now raised $1,497
  5. 5 Blue have taken the lead in class fundraising with $6,890 raised

The Junior School is unbelievably impressed by the level of commitment shown by the students, and we cannot wait to see how they progress leading up to the big FunRun event.

We thank all families for being on board and we further encourage you to spread the message far and wide, explaining the causes we’re fundraising for and the meaning behind each chosen charity.

If you would like to pass on the Waverley College Junior School fundraising link below, people can use this, or alternately, students send out their personal link themselves to increase their fundraising efforts:

Year 5 White – Around the Classroom!

This week in 5 White, we designed and created an artwork that displayed the effect plastic pollution has on sea creatures and the ocean. Much of our unwanted plastic ends up in the ocean – around 8 million tonnes of it every year, in fact!

Because plastic takes 400 years to break down, it stays there for a long, long time, putting our friends beneath the waves in serious danger.

Our task was to create a collage inside the body of our chosen animal, by cutting out pictures of plastic objects and food from magazines or newspapers, and pasting them closely together, overlapping each other.

We had a lot of fun, getting creative and learning new facts about plastic pollution in our oceans!

By 5 White Students

Junior School collage artwork

In this lesson I learned that 700 different species of animals are believed to be severely threatened because of plastic pollution in the ocean. I also discovered that 10% of all dead animals found in beach cleanups worldwide have been entangled in plastic bags. The last fact I learned is that 5 trillion pieces of plastic are estimated to be floating in the world’s seas. I enjoyed this activity because it was fun to search through magazines and newspapers, and cutting out food and plastic products.

By Sam Peate

Junior School collage artwork

Did you know that 90% of seabirds eat plastic rubbish mistaking it for food? Did you know that 52% of sea turtles have accidentally eaten plastic bags mistaking them for jellyfish? I also learned that 443 animals and birds were found trapped by marine debris (such as old ropes, nets, mesh and wires) during a recent international coastal cleanup. I enjoyed this activity because it was very creative and clever with the way that we did it.
