Last Friday, both Year 5 and Year 6 attended ‘A Case of Discovery’ science incursion at school. Our students were able to explore real forensic science techniques and apply the science they’ve learnt in class, to solve the case and catch the criminal.
The case created for our students was engaging and exciting. See the case below:
The gold is gone! The jewels are too! Three sneaky thieves have made off with the loot! But when they are arrested the treasure is nowhere to be found. Then, the security guard who reported the robbery is attacked! Why was Joseph attacked and what on earth happened to the stolen goods?
The students were so excited when they saw that the workshop was so ‘hands-on’! Students loved trying the forensic science outfits and using the fingerprint equipment. Overall, it was a unique and fascinating experience! We hope you enjoy the photos of this extraordinary day.

The boys explored the very important theme of ‘Sorry Day and Reconciliation’ through stories written by First Nations Peoples.
Rich literature is used to encourage valuable discussion on the cultural heritage of the First Nations Peoples. This opens up many opportunities for conversations.
The boys highlighted many important facts, and we were involved in activities that promote critical thinking, through the use of Visible Thinking Routines.
This is also an ideal time for families to join the reconciliation conversation with their sons.
The debating season has kicked off this term with one win and one loss for Waverley. The boys had their first debate against St Catherine’s. The debate topic was ‘That parents should not allow their children access to the Internet unless it’s for school.’
Both Waverley teams put forward strong arguments and presented their cases clearly and firmly, rebutting the St Catherine’s team’s cases. The boys did themselves and Waverley very proud.
Debating develops important skills that are transferable to other areas: exploring ideas, developing arguments, articulating opinions, building confidence, being able to think on one’s feet, and becoming a good public speaker.
Congratulations on your first debate! Our next debate is against Coogee Boys’ Preparatory on 3 June.

In English, we have loved having the opportunity to use a program called Writer’s Toolbox. It is a wonderfully motivating online platform, and at the moment we are using it to learn about different sentence types. Writer’s Toolbox makes writing fun and it gives real-time feedback on our efforts.
This week we have learnt about semicolon sentences. This is a way of joining two simple sentences without using conjunctions. A good example is: Billy felt a stinging pain in his wound; he burst into tears immediately.
We did an activity where we wrote a text where a person drank liquid and got special powers. The target words were 300 and you had to include a semicolon sentence in each paragraph.

During Religion this Semester, we have learnt about the season of Lent, and how Easter is a time for hope and new life. We have also discussed topics like how to control our feelings and emotions.
Inspired by the teachings of Jesus, we discussed and made a poster full of ideas on how we can better control these feelings and attitudes. For example, we talked about when we get angry, we can take time to talk to God and our family, to express why we are feeling this way. We also have been learning about Edmund Rice
By Hugo D and Jacob P
This semester in Science, we have been learning about energy, concentrating on electricity and circuits. Our main project is to make a car that can carry an egg three metres, using batteries and motors. Our group used a program to design the car called ‘Tinkercad.’ It is a helpful website where you can design 3D objects. Now we are turning our designs into reality using lego and actual circuits.

During History lessons, we have been studying multiple historical Australian figures like Pemulwuy, Lachlan Macquarie and Edward Hargraves. We have been assigned to build a history stall for our history showcase in Week 9. To add to the theatre of our booth, we will be dressed as our chosen historical figure.
Here is an example of a document that we used to gather our research, based on questions that we devised.

Over the last two terms, 5 Orange has progressed quite a lot with their visual arts. We began our art by creating awesome Aboriginal dot paintings. We used small turtles on black canvases, and our colour choices added a beautiful storytelling element to our paintings. To support our history learning journey, we painted a picture of us at the goldfields! The results were very humorous!
By Jake and Vincent
In 5 Orange, Mr McKimm regularly talks about having a ‘growth mindset’ in all that we do. To us, this is about never giving up and being determined to achieve your goals.
Like when in sport you don’t always get the team you want, however, you need to be determined to keep trying and move up teams. This thought process can also work in the classroom, if we apply a growth mindset to challenging tasks.
By Jacob R and Louis Coleman
In 5 Orange, we have buckets that we can put nice messages in. These messages should fill the buckets of our classmates and make them feel good about themselves. As a class, we have discussed that if you fill a bucket outside of the classroom (and in it), that would mean that you are making somebody’s day, by perhaps performing an act of kindness or saying a kind word.
By Jacob K and Jacob S
In 5 Orange this semester, we have learnt about being an upstander. An upstander is someone who sees something wrong or incorrect, and does something about it. People who are upstanders make a huge difference to many people. Read some of our upstander pledges we made last term.
By Ryan and Ollie Burke
Since we started in 5 Orange, Mr McKimm taught us a very powerful word: Ubuntu. Ubuntu means “I am because we are.” The word was originally used by Nelson Mandela; then adopted by the Boston Celtics. This word teaches and stands for trust, accountability, freedom and teamwork.
By Lachlan and Jack F
Throughout the year, 5 Orange have been focusing on displaying high expectations in all that we do. Borrowing from the All Blacks we use the motto: ‘better men make a better team’. This means that we also have to try our best, work to improve and display lovely manners.
We use the term ‘high expectations’ as a reminder that we always need to be thinking and switched on, so we can perform at our best. We have been using high expectations for tests like NAPLAN, and for things like ending the term.
Benefits of high expectations are that more people care about you, because you’re being nice to them.
We hope you can apply this to other classes and benefit from it.

Please follow the link below to ensure you are up-to-date with any changes to fixtures for this weekend. Please keep a close eye on the Waverley College app for any adjustments due to weather conditions and field closures.
I would like to thank all families for your continued understanding, during a time that has often been challenging and frustrating due to cancelled training and games.
I feel it is important and also helpful for me to explain how and why the decisions are made to cancel training and games.
Unfortunately, I and the College have no power over the closure of fields. Queens Park is controlled by Centennial Parklands, and Waverley Park is controlled by Waverley Council. We have no jurisdiction over their decision to close the fields due to the impact of field conditions, rainfalls and weather forecasts. Ground closures usually occur to preserve the fields and also to ensure that there is no long-lasting impact on the grounds.
Please understand that the College does its absolute best to seek alternative options as a result of these closures. But unfortunately, the majority of the time, it is last-minute decisions made by these outside stakeholders. This does make it extremely difficult to secure back-up fields on such short notice.
This is a serious issue, but an issue that isn’t taken lightly. I am always in discussion with the Senior School to seek solutions, but regrettably, we find ourselves at a dead end most times. This is a larger-scale problem than what we can manage as a College, and currently also a state-wide problem that all schools and sporting clubs across NSW are facing.
I wholeheartedly empathise with the level of frustration that families are experiencing right now. I hope that this message goes some way towards helping everyone impacted, to appreciate the complexity and inevitability of the issues.
Waverley Junior School had three students selected in the NSW CIS Touch Football team to represent IPSHA and Waverley at the NSW Touch Football Championships in Tuggerah.
Cooper Misson, Hunter Leondis and Isaac Matheson competed at an extremely high standard and made the College proud. The team only had eight hours of training over two days, playing 12 games total and only losing two.
The team made it to the semi-finals, playing into extra time, but unfortunately lost 3-2, in a nail-biting game. With some phantom touches by the other team, and unlucky calls by the referee, the boys held their heads high and should be hugely proud of themselves for their achievement.

On Friday, 27 May, the Junior School Campus will be hosting a mufti day to raise money to contribute to the cause of curing cancer. Our very own member of staff, Mr Thomas Olds, will be competing in the Stars of the East Dance competition, and has so far been raising money through the generosity and support of many Waverley families. He has expressed his gratitude for the Waverley Community, and has been truly touched that so many families have donated to support him and the cause.
There really has been such a wonderful response from our community and families, and I am so excited to perform for a number of them that have not only donated, but have purchased front row tickets to the night. Initially, I was quite nervous and insecure about stepping out of my comfort zone and dancing in front of people, but the enormous support being shown has allowed me to relax and get stuck into my dance practice sessions. So again, I want to thank everyone who has donated so generously and express that the donation link is still active for anyone else who would like to contribute. – Mr Thomas Olds

Concussion and serious injuries in sport are becoming an ever-increasing issue that should be taken very seriously. Waverley College places the health and wellbeing of your son first, as a major priority.
Any suspected concussion or serious injury by a medic, physiotherapist or coach is reported, and medical clearance is required for your son to return to sport. In most cases, the recovery time for concussion is a minimum of two to three weeks.
If your son is experiencing some of the following symptoms after or during a training or a game, please make sure that you take them to a doctor to get examined, or have the Queens Park/Opposition medic assess your son, to determine the seriousness of the knock:
The same policy applies with serious injuries during games or training. If your son is concussed or seriously injured playing sport outside of the College, it is the responsibility of the player and parents to notify the Head of Junior Sport and the Convenor of that sport.
*No parents or carers should ever be making decisions for their son to return to playing or training if their son has been potentially concussed or injured. Please leave that decision to the professional medics, physiotherapist or coaches.
Please read carefully, by clicking the link below.
>>> Click here to view our current Concussion Policy.

Although all AFL games and one Rugby game were cancelled, it was a great round of sport for all other Waverley Junior School teams. The sun was shining and we had a lot of muddy teams, who battled it out in difficult conditions. All teams gave it their all, regardless of the final result, which is most pleasing.
I encourage boys to keep giving their all, attending all training and games to best support full participation for their team. Thank you to all the parents and students who have supported other teams who have struggled for numbers from week to week. Myself, coaches and convenors greatly appreciate and acknowledge this.
As mentioned in previous weeks, it has been amazing to see the enjoyment and involvement from all students in the Extra Co-Curricular activities undertaken each week. Students have been truly diving in on learning new skills and making the most of each session.

This classroom is forever busy. I am happy to say they are making me work very hard to try to keep up with their commitment and output of quality work.
The boys really enjoy activities where they have to research and present using our College CANVAS platform as an instructional guide. If a student is sick or has to miss school, they nearly always ask to be included via Google Meet, to feel a part of the lessons.
The students do excel in independent learning, and are always open to collaborative learning with their peers.
The reports I receive from their specialist teachers are always positive. They consistently mention that they are among the most productive group in the school, who adapt to any learning situation.
I am blessed as a teacher to have these 26 special boys.

6 Gold has had such an incredible start this term. They have come back ready to learn and are displaying such a positive attitude. They worked incredibly hard last term and created amazing pieces of work in all subjects, but particularly in English, History and Science.
Throughout Term 1, students were involved in many rich learning tasks. One of their favourite tasks was creating a comic strip based on a superhero they designed themselves. Their comic strip included their very own superhero, a setting, a nemesis, problem and resolution.
6 Gold students were taught visual metalanguage which needed to be incorporated into their design, such as symbols, lines, vectors, size and colour.
In history, students investigated the status, rights and freedoms of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in Australia in the 1900s. We delved deep into Kevin Rudd’s 2008 Apology to the Stolen Generations, and many other significant events of this time.
One historical event we looked at closely, was the Freedom Ride of 1965, led by Charles Perkins. Students learnt the significant impact this journey had for the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people at the time and events that followed. Students were tasked with creating a front page newspaper article about the Freedom Rides. They did an amazing job!

Last Wednesday, 4 May, Waverley Junior School had fifteen students selected to represent the College at the IPSHA Cross Country carnival. This event was meant to be going ahead last term, but due to the impact of the weather, it was postponed. Our students had been training really hard, preparing with the Senior School distance athletics squad each week. This definitely gave our runners a great chance to improve their times, as well as their overall stamina and aerobic fitness.
All of our competitors gave it their absolute all, in extremely tough competition. Congratulations to the following students for participating, and to the students who made it through to the CIS Cross Country carnival as part of the IPSHA Squad:

Waverley Junior School nominated six Year 6 students to represent the College at the annual IPSHA Rugby Trials at Shore School in Northbridge. The six students selected for the trial included: Lukas Pendleton, Cooper Misson, Riley Carr, Cash Parry, Daniel McCall and Beau Matheson-Rayner.
The boys all felt very comfortable being at this trial, knowing Mr Olds was there supporting them, and also being a selection official for IPSHA. Our College is very proud of all of these students for their involvement, but we’d like to congratulate them, particularly as they were all selected to go to the CIS Trials, to hopefully make it into the NSWCIS Representative Squad.

Welcome back to Term 2. I hope everyone had a wonderful Easter break. Our students are now well accustomed to the routines and structures their teachers have set for them, and have started the term by jumping straight into their learning.
Now that all students have settled in, the expectations we have of our students this term are now higher. This is a very important term, with Semester 1 reports going home towards the end of term. Our students will be very busy with Winter sports starting, so it is important that you help your sons manage their time, and plan the week ahead to incorporate a balanced approach to training, home learning and assignments.
Below is the Curriculum Overview for Term 2. Here you will see what your son will be learning in the classroom. It is clearly set out so that you can see the subject and the topics being taught across the curriculum.

This week the Drawing Club students had great conversations about their mums. This was the inspiration for our drawing sessions. The boys Googled their mums, drew from memory, or had a special photo saved on their laptop to create a Mother’s Day portrait.
The competition aims at allowing students to develop their speaking skills. Speaking well in public prepares you for positions of responsibility, visibility and the future. Speak up, speak well, and many opportunities will be open to you.
I would like to thank our Year 9 students Nick Zanapalis, James Peate and Archie Godby, for offering to mentor our Junior School IPSHA Debating Team. It was a successful second training session. Waverley’s first debate for the season is against St Catherine’s and the topic is ‘That technology is harmful to our friendships.’
Hugo Anderson, Jasper Lumsden, Dexter Francis and Harry Welfare presented at our Lunchtime Talk on Wednesday. They gave the audience an insight into a hobby that has now turned into a passion: ‘Warhammer,’ a semi-complex board game.
The Junior School boys loved every minute of the presentation and had many questions for our board-gaming gurus. A huge thank you to the boys for giving up their time to prepare and present.
Next week, our guest speaker Ms Marie-Anne Maakrun brings to light the world of cartoonists.

The NAPLAN timetable can be accessed in the following links:
*It is also recommended that students reboot their laptops on the morning of a test, to minimise issues with the online portal.
At the start of each test, students must line up in base classes in alphabetical order in the Centenary Quad.
Students must bring:
Excessive preparation for NAPLAN Online is not recommended. Students do not need to be able to touch type to complete NAPLAN Online as the tests are not about keyboard skills (just as the paper test is not about handwriting skills).

A warm welcome back to all our families as we commence Term 2. It has been lovely hearing all the holiday stories as I wander the corridors, and even more fabulous to hear how happy the boys are to be back at school.
Please find below some reminders about key events you need to be aware of for the Junior School in Term 2. For all of the College events, please refer to the College calendar.
This Sunday, 1 May marks Waverley College’s 112th celebration of our annual May Procession. This is a sacred celebration of our College founder Blessed Edmund Rice and our devotion to Mary, Jesus’ mother.
Our special guest at this year’s May Procession is General the Honourable Sir Peter Cosgrove AK CVO MC (Retd), and we look forward to having many of our Old Boys join us for this special celebration.
Unfortunately, due to the forecasted rain this Sunday, we are relocating this year’s May Procession from the Centenary Quad to the Br Lacey Gymnasium. Regrettably, this reduces capacity.
We will be live-streaming the May Procession for the community, and have made the event compulsory for students in Years 7-12 only.
*Students in Years 5-6 therefore, are not required to attend, and are encouraged to watch the May Procession from home.
The May Procession will take place from 12pm to 1:30pm, and will be on regardless of the weather.

Students have now been informed of their selected team for the Winter Co-Curricular Sport Season. Due to the complications of Term 1 in regards to inclement weather, large numbers of sick or close contacts with COVID-19, and the closure of Queens Park, we weren’t able to announce teams at the end of Term 1. Thank you for your understanding around this. We are all looking forward to the commencement of the Winter Sports Season.
I wish all teams the best of luck for Round 1, and know our students will represent the College in the highest regard. I know each and every student will demonstrate good sportsmanship, teamwork and respect for all coaches and officials who will give their time over the weekend.
Regardless of the team your son has been placed in for the season, there are always opportunities for adjustments to be made. Coaches have my support in rewarding students who have demonstrated positive team values and excelling within their own performances, by moving them up. The same goes for adjustments down due to students lacking necessary team values, and who may also require further confidence in their own abilities, which may be achieved through moving down a team.
This closely links to the Senior School’s selection policies and is encouraged to improve team dynamics, individual performance and build resilience.
Please take the time to access all the important documents for the season ahead in the link below.

It has been two years since Waverley College Junior School attended the Armidale Rugby Carnival, due to the impact of COVID-19. In NSW, this is a carnival steeped in Junior School history, and Waverley plays a large part in that history, having attended all of them in the past two decades.
The selected team were beaming with excitement about the opportunity to play at this prestigious event. Surprisingly, having made the lengthy six-hour drive to Armidale, the team was full of energy and ready to play their first match on arrival.
We opened up the competition with a game against St Joseph’s Nudgee College, who definitely came prepared to play. Waverley were eager to take control of the game, but Nudgee were too strong, and won the game 22-7. The team learned a great deal and were ready to improve their attack and defence.
Our next opposition was the Caboolture Snakes. It was an intensely tight game that consisted of continuous lead changes. We didn’t believe we played to the best of our abilities and felt that we were lacking confidence, which led us to a two-point loss against a team we knew we could beat. The final score was 12-10.
Taking on the close rivalry of Scots College, with a large number of boys knowing each other, this game was meaningful for a lot of reasons. In this game, the team came alive, as Waverley took on the best team in the division 1 pool. It was a tight game from the start, with Scots taking the lead 5-0. Waverley displayed their best defence in this game and although we didn’t score, the boys kept Scots from scoring again. It was a well-fought contest between the two teams, but Scots were too strong and won 5-0.
Approaching the final game for the day, against St Patrick’s Strathfield, the boys were exhausted, but still thirsty for a win. Within minutes of the kick-off, Waverley scored. This gave the team confidence and with that they played the rest of the game with skill and flair. The forwards took the ball up, passed to the backs, and a flurry of tries were scored. It was wonderful to see such a team effort and the final result reflected this. The boys were overjoyed with a win 15-5 to finish the day.
The carnival concluded with a final game on Sunday morning against Brothers Sunshine Coast. The boys were feeling confident with yesterday’s win and eager to show their best. They came out firing, playing their best football of the tournament, winning 64-0. The boys were able to leave Armidale with their heads held high, and as a coaching staff, we are extremely excited to see how their upcoming season goes.
As staff, we were truly grateful to have such supportive and helpful parents throughout the weekend. I would like to acknowledge and thank all parents who made the trip, and provided that support throughout. In particular, Jamie McCall who was the parent representative, and did a large amount of organisation to ensure the team and parents were looked after for the weekend.
Waverley was thrilled to have had five students selected at the IPSHA Touch Football trials to represent the Junior School at the CIS Touch Football Trials. The following students included: Hunter Leondis, Cooper Misson, Issac Matheson, Jackson MacAskill and Kalan Fisher.
All students trialled at an extremely high standard, and we were very fortunate to have had Hunter, Cooper and Issac selected in the CIS Representative Team. This is a significant achievement for these boys and we’re beyond proud of their accomplishments.

This year in the Junior School we are encouraging families to join the College team for the upcoming ‘City2Surf.’ To help support our students and families who decide to take on this challenge, a Junior School Running Club will be formed.
The mission of Running Club is to encourage students and families to develop a love of running through participation in various fun runs, such as the City2Surf. This will be the main focus of the group, to build stamina and endurance for long distance running. We believe that participation in these events will create a sense of community and achievement, knowing that they have covered a variety of courses and distances.
At Running Club, students will be encouraged to have fun and hopefully discover a love of running, while building their skills and passion for sport. Students will be encouraged to “run the race at their own pace” and “enjoy the journey along the way.”
When: Starting Monday lunchtimes beginning Week 3 (9 May 2022)
Where: Waverley Park
Dress: appropriate running attire (boys may wear PE uniform or their own running attire). Boys will change before and after each session into their scheduled Waverley attire for the day
Parents/Carers: are welcome to attend and parent helpers are welcome to assist coaches when running in the local area
Wet Weather: in the event of wet weather, an announcement will be communicated to the boys at school and on the College app.

For parents seeking information regarding the Sacrament of Confirmation, it is important that you contact your local parish to find out the details regarding when the Sacrament will be celebrated, and when the preparation classes will be held.
For students who are part of St Charles Borromeo Parish (Mary Immaculate Church), and attend Waverley College, the Sacrament of Confirmation will be celebrated on Sunday, 19 June at 2pm.
Please be aware that the Sacrament of Confirmation is celebrated each year, therefore only Year 6 students will be enrolled to receive the Sacrament.
If you wish for your son to be a part of this Sacrament, and you are part of St Charles Borromeo Parish (Mary Immaculate Church), please email Mr Stephen Ghattas at sghattas@waverley.nsw.edu.au so that a registration form and other important information can be forwarded to you.

I am thrilled to be working with a new group of boys who will help make the Learning Hub even more exciting, with new initiatives this year.
There were 64 students who completed the online application to be considered for a Learning Hub Assistant position. Reading the responses was overwhelmingly positive, and I wish I could have added more students. I strongly believe that ‘Student Voice,’ is an important part of education.
I have added a new department called the 3D printing room, and these students will assist with 3D design and printing each term.
The holidays are here, and it is important to continue to encourage your sons to read at home. Modelling reading at home is so important!
Carve out time every day for family reading time. This can be a short amount of time (15-20 minutes) where everyone in the family stops what they are doing and reads. It can be anything from a book, newspaper article, magazine to a cookbook.
When children see the important people in their lives reading, they will want to read even more.
Home Learning club will begin in Week 2.

There was an exciting energy from all of our Year 6 students leading into the camp at The Collaroy Centre. Located on the Northern Beaches, we didn’t need to travel too far to enjoy the experiences of camp.
Once arriving, it was obvious to see the students wanted to get stuck into the activities and burn off some of that energy and excitement.
The boys quickly settled into camp life, getting stuck into the wide range of activities on offer, in such a close proximity to the campsite:
In spite of the rainy weather on the second day, the boys embraced all the adventures and activities that pushed them out of their comfort zone each day.
Staff were very impressed with the students’ involvement, engagement and support for one another.
The overall experience of Year 6 Camp gave all students every opportunity to create new memories, step out of their comfort zone to face challenges, and conquer fears along the way.
It taught our boys about resilience, compassion and genuine mateship for one another. It was an experience the boys will hopefully never forget, and one that they can take with them as they say goodbye to the Junior School at the end of 2022.
I would like to acknowledge all the Waverley staff who donated their time to be a part of the experience, and to The Collaroy Centre staff who made every day enjoyable and memorable for our students.
Please be advised that due to the significant number of students that have been away across the three Winter Sports Trials and the closure of Queens Park due to weather, we cannot announce teams this week.
The teams cannot be finalised at this stage, as staff and coaches strongly believe they haven’t been able to fairly place students into teams that best represent their skill level and overall character. This is out of respect for the large number of students who have missed trials due to COVID-19, injuries and personal reasons.
It has been decided that we will cancel all training for Week 1, Term 2, and have another trial on Thursday, 28 April at Queens Park during Periods 1 and 2. This will allow all students to attend and offer more space at Queens Park, helping to make any final decisions about the selection of teams for the Winter Season.
All coaches for the Winter Season will attend the trial, and will have a chance to connect with their team prior to the first game. Teams will be announced at the trial, and staff will give students a slip, letting them know the team in which they’ve been placed.
Sports meetings will occur on Friday, 29 April to help students know where they will be playing for Round 1 and any other team-related information.
I fully empathise and understand that this does create some initial dilemmas, with families not knowing their training days and their game location on Saturday, 30 April for Round 1. However, we believe this to be the best and fairest situation to ensure that students aren’t randomly placed in teams without adequate observation of all students’ skill level and a proper assessment.
Please refer to the app announcement sent out on Wednesday, which included the draft Training Schedule for the Winter Season. The final updated copy will be sent out with the season draw via the app at the beginning of Term 2.
Thank you for your understanding around this adjustment, it is greatly appreciated.
A massive congratulations again to Ryan Desousa who competed at the NSWPSSA Swimming Carnival (State Finals) on both Monday and Tuesday this week in the multiclass backstroke and freestyle events.
Ryan did amazingly well, finishing 3rd overall in both events. This now means he will be competing at the National Championships in Brisbane. What a significant achievement for Ryan, and as a College, we continue to be very proud of him.
Waverley AFL continues to go from strength to strength, especially in the Junior School. We were fortunate to have our team in 2021 go on and became the Regional Final Champions for the annual Paul Kelly Cup AFL Carnival.
This year, we weren’t going to miss the opportunity to include another Waverley Junior School team for the event. The boys hadn’t yet had any chances to train together, but considering how well they played, you would not have realised!
The team won the first game against Knox and Cranbrook reasonably comfortably. They tried their hearts out against Shore, but fell short by two points.
Due to a high percentage as a result of the previous two games, the team went through to the semi final and eventually made it through to the grand final.
Two years in a row, our team has made it through and won the regional grand final. What an experience for our boys, who will now go on to play at the Giants AFL Stadium later in the year to compete for the state championship.
We’re so proud of this team, and wish them the best of luck for later in the year.
Congratulations to Marcus Strbac, who won the all round best player for the gala day.
It was a team effort, but we also can’t go past the coaching from Ms Buttling and Hugo Steilick on the day. Thank you to the coaches, and parents who came down to cheer them on.
It has been great to see the trial period for three of the Extra Co-Curricular Activities take place this week. The three activities included:
It was clear to see every student enjoying themselves in these activities, and evidently excited for the opportunity to begin them again in Term 2.
If you signed up your son for the trial, you will have received an email yesterday (Thursday, 7 April) with all relevant information about the program, the cost involved (Innovation/ Hip Hop), and also a link to sign your son up for Term 2.
*It is very important you complete this promptly, as some of the activities have very limited availability.

This term, 6 Blue have been working hard on their ‘Myths and Legends’ creative writing. We have explored the Writing Process which consists of planning, draft writing, reviewing, self-editing, peer-editing and publishing.
Before writing, we built the field, by reading various myths and legends, summarising different written myths and legends, and watching short video texts of famous Greek myths.
We decided that a well written myth or legend includes:
6 Blue students understood the brief, and met it with incredible creativity and language features that added such depth to their writing.
Sir Bilby sighed as the thought of his father’s death danced through his head, reminding him of the fateful day that occurred not so long ago. A sword slicing through his father’s flesh like a knife through butter, blood trickling from his chest, it was aggravating. The king had to pay, the endless fields would fall, and revenge would be sweet, he did kill him after all.
On his weekly walk to the market, he couldn’t stop thinking about it, his body was overflowing with anger, eyes fixed to the massive castle cast its shadow down onto the bustling village below. Without thought, he began yelling some extremely unfaithful and cruel things, that no other would ever mouth, let alone speak, to such a powerful being. He couldn’t hold it in, and after hours of yelling, he continued on with his day like normal, as if nothing had happened at all, but deep down, way down, a plan was forming.
The door burst open as a muscular man stomped in, steam rising from his head. This was the king and he expressed his anger in a cold, hard yell “kill him, kill him NOW!” as he looked across the kingdom that was around those thousands of years ago. He called upon the dark worms, a massive, now extinct species, and told them to kill Sir Bilby at all cost.
The sun a golden coin glimmering with light, sharing its warm rays down on Sir Bilby, but he wasn’t happy no, no, not at all, he had found out about his sentence and he was furious, his veins bulging through his neck and face turning redder by the second, now not only did he kill his father but now he was going to kill him too, he wasn’t going to allow this, soon after his plan went into motion, this plan was to fight. Sir Bilby wasn’t foolish; he would need a team, a group of renegades, loyal friends who would not give up and support Sir Bilby at all cost, even in the darkest of times. They too will need armour, the strongest armour they could possibly find, the strongest armour in the kingdom. They would need weapons, the strongest weapons they could find, the strongest weapons in the kingdom. He was ready to finish what he started, as every knight should, as everybody should.
While on a mission to map out the weak spots of the castle, a deafening rumble came from behind him and his men and the floor below, their now shaking feet began to tremble. It could only be one thing: the army of the dark worms. Sure enough, one by one, giant worms thrusted their heads from beneath the ground, destroying all wildlife in the area. Sir Bilby and his men gripped their sword tightly, removed it with great strength from its leather strap, and swung it around violently.
Sir Bilby was ready to defend his dignity with all the might he could muster, and with that, he began to fight. Sir Bilby and his good friend Sir Theodore cut one of the many worms in half, its clear blood becoming what is now known as the arctic ocean, one down, thousands more to go. All the others suffered a similar fate, everyone making a new part of the world’s oceans, but the last two weren’t as easy. These two, presumably the leaders, took hours to defeat, they only died when Sir Bilby all joined together, and did a massive attack and cut both of their heads clean off, like cutting an apple.
A deathening smash rattled the furniture of the tall castle, as in the bedroom, the king’s angry face became one of worry and despair. It was obvious who this was, he should have known if you are furious at someone, would you fight their followers or them themselves? The king locked himself in the sturdiest drawer in the domain, but somehow he knew, it wouldn’t be enough. Footsteps echoed through the empty corridors, people screaming at the sight of such a sharp sword. Some joined him, realising the king’s terrible rulings, and gave into the fact that he was a bad king. Finally, the door squeaked open, they smashed open the cupboard, and saw the weak ruler shrivelled up into a ball. The king took one last breath, and realised his mistakes, he was ready to finish it and walk into the light, “I’m sorry.” With that, Sir Bilby thrusted his sword into his chest, ending a life. He had finished what he started, he took responsibility. He walked in a rebel and walked out a hero.
Greece, A Cave In Mount Olympus
“Long ago, there was nothing, then three gods called Zeus, Hades and Poseidon. Zeus created the world, Hades created death and Poseidon created land and sea. To help them they created Titans, mythical beasts capable of changing the world, but the Titans wanted more power and provoked the gods. They started the war but lost after the battle. Zeus told Hades to lock them up in Tartarus, a mythical hell for demonic creatures. Hades obeyed and they have been locked in there till this day, but the Oracle of the gods mentioned that one day Serpens, the strongest of the Titans, would come out and take over. Only one soul, a master of fire can banish them back to Tartarus.” Amanda stated.
“ Amanda, when can we leave and explore the world?” he asked.
“When the time comes, Summer,” Amanda replies. She sat back on her hind legs and began cleaning her thick, grey fur. A wolf’s coat can be difficult to maintain.
Years pass by and Summer gets older. He grows longer brown hair. He stays skinny and still only remembers his family by his trusty old compass. Amanda grows a larger fur coat, sharper teeth, but she is getting old. Later that night when they were eating, Summer announced to Amanda, “Delicious food, where’d you find the fish?”
“Oh just down by the river. These ones are very rare so eat up,” replied Amanda. She then began to pant. “What’s wrong Amanda?”
“Serpens, he’s here. My child, run! You need to escape to the Amazon Rainforest. Use your compass. It will tell you the way.” Amanda announced.
“But-” Summer was cut off by Amanda.
“Go!” Ten minutes later, Serpens arrived and turned to Amanda.
“Hello, Amanda.” he expressed with a cunning voice.
“What do you want, Serpens?” Amanda replied.
“You know what I want, now where is he?” Serpens says with a serious voice.
“I won’t tell you,” Amanda replied. Shing!
“Pity, pity. Find him.”
“Yes, master.” Some Titans reply.
Six months later, “Finally I have reached the Amazon. Ahhh.” Thunk! “Why did I even have to come here anyway?” Roar! “What was that?”
“I see you chosen one!”
“Ahhhhhhhhh! What are you, you large piece of rock, why are you chasing me and how are you ALIVE!”
A giant rock monster covered in moss appears out of nowhere and looks unhappy.
“Just die already!” the monster said.
“Get out of the way!” a mysterious figure shouted as it shot beams of ice out of its hand.
“Who, who are you?” Summer asked.
The figure spoke in a calm voice “Hi I’m Winter.” Winter had blue eyes, she was dressed in clothes you would wear in a city, she was as beautiful as a waterfall and had a perfect voice.
“C’mon we got to get you to camp.”
The camp had an invisible force field to keep the monsters away.
“Welcome to Camp Titanus. Here we take care of Titan blood. Titan bloods are people who have the blood type of Titans. These people have the ability to use the element of their blood type. The elements consist of Earth, Fire, Wind, Ice and Electricity. We separate the people with certain elements into a cabin with other people with that element, unless you are a master, then you go into the master cabin which is the same but nicer,” Winter explained.
“Okay so now I have powers, whoa this day is almost as weird as when an apparent Titan attacked me,” Summer replied.
“But the titan did attack you today?” she stated with confusion.
“No, no, no, six months ago I had to leave Greece to get here, because this guy called Serpens was coming,” he said.
“Wait, did you say Serpens?!” Winter shouted with astonishment.
“Yes, do you have like a hearing disorder or something?”
“We need to go tell Procellae at the master cabin!”
Bang! Winter kicked the door so hard it slammed into a door waking up Procellae.
“Procellae, I need to tell you something,” Winter yelled.
“What is it, my child?” says a man who looks 1,000 years old, has great posture for his age, and sounds wise.
“Procellae, I have found a traveller that has been searching for us, his name is Summer. I found him outside our base looking for us and worst comes to worst Serpens has escaped!”
“What?! We need to get ready for war! Alert everyone to get to their battle positions. Also, where did he come from?”
“I came from Greece,” replied Summer.
“So let me do the math real quick, hm, ah, oh, uhh, AHA got it, we have about a week.”
“What!” Summer and Winter gasped with astonishment.
“Don’t what me, get training before he comes.”
“C’mon just show us your element child,” Procellae, spoke in a tired voice. The sun was coming down, it was so late.
“I’m trying!” Shing!
“My boy looks like whatever you had in your pocket can turn into a sword when you want it to.”
“Huh? This is the pocket I kept my compass in. This means I could’ve used a sword before.”
“Yes my child, but now we return to training.” Fwoom! Crackle! Crackle! Crackle! “Oh my Zeus we should’ve just tried to get the sword out before but now you summon fire! Welp back to training.”
A week passed and Summer could control his fire and his sword, he could even light his sword on fire, but one week ago Procellae told everyone that Serpens would come in a week and he did. Thunk! Thunk! Thunk!
Procellae heard the thumping and said, “It seems like the war has begun. Everyone to your battle stations.”
“Ah, Procellae how delightful is it to see you here,” Serpens announced with a calm voice.
“Serpens why do you provoke war upon us?” Procellae asked. Serpens stretches his neck, smoothens his scaly face and says, “Well you know why, the only one who can stop me is in your army, so I’ll kill him before he gets to full power. How about we make it easier, my army versus your army.”
“What army? I don’t see any,” says Procellae with suspicion.
“This army!” Rumble! Rumble! Rumble! Hundreds of every type of Titan come out of the ground, and one earth Titan bigger than the rest, lifts Serpens and puts him on his head.
“What is that?” says Procellae with astonishment.
“This is just my little creation, I call it Behemoth. It is a rock Titan with stronger telekinesis powers. Show them what you can do.” Behemoth raises his arm and the clouds part.
Winter says “Is this the power of a god?”
Shhhhhhhhh! “How did he do that?” shouts Summer. A huge meteor destroys all the trees in a 100 metre radius and turns a massive circle of the Amazon into a wasteland.
“I will stop it.” Procellae says, as he uses his wind magic to hold the meteor up. He succeeds and everyone cheers.
“Bravo, bravo really you saved everyone from the meteor but what about the second?!” Serpens says with a psychopathic voice. Suddenly a second meteor falls out of the sky. Boom! shatters both of the meteors but then. Fwoom!
“He’s fast!” says Procellae, as Serpens jumps and lands a hard hit on Procellae.
“Let the war begin!” shouts Serpens. Rahhhhhh! Everyone shouts as they run into battle, but the Behemoth is destroying Camp Titanus’ army, and while Procellae is fighting Serpens, he can’t help.
Summer shouts, “Everyone, use your magic all at once so we can land a hard hit on the Behemoth!”
Everyone shouts, “Okay.” They all jump use their powers and… Boom! The Behemoth shatters and crumbles into little pieces of rubble.
“How dare you destroy my creation chosen one, now I will destroy you!” says Serpens, as he leaps and grabs Summer along the way.
“No Summer,” says Winter.
Procellae replies. “Let him be, the result may end up well.”
“Chosen one, you will be the first one to die to my hands, but doing so will not be so easy, since you are full power, so let me show you my full power. Meet Asmodeus,” Serpens shouts as he jumps up, and a giant snake leaps out of the ground, and Serpens lands on its head. Asmodeus goes straight for the attack. Summer dodges and slices the tail off.
“Yes!” Summer exclaims. “What’s happening?” The tail starts to move and a snake regenerates from the end of the tail and a tail regenerates from the other snake’s body.
“Did I mention she can multiply?” Serpens psychopathically says. Summer keeps on slicing up the Asmodeus, but they keep multiplying and multiplying and multiplying.
“Now Asmodeus go for the attack!” All of them leap, but Shing! Summer cuts off a fang, turns his sword into a compass, throws it into Serpens mouth then… Shing! Flick! Flick! Flick! Boom! Summer turns his compass into a sword, then ignites it on fire, and the poison ignites and explodes.
Suddenly all of the Titans fade into dust.
“Well, it seems like Serpens strength was also his weakness.” Summer says before fainting.
Two days later, Summer woke up outside on a mattress, to everyone standing around him.
“Summer, you’re awake,” announced Winter.
Some kids muttered, “Is this the kid that saved us?”
“How is he alive?”
“Hey isn’t he new?”
“Procellae, come quickly,” shouted Winter. Procellae emerged from the crowd and said, “Well, my boy, you are very wise, when we were losing you did one smart thing, and saved us all.”
“Oh, Procellae, how long is it going to take us to repair everything?” asked Summer.
“We already have, it took around an hour but we did it, and now we have saved mankind and the gods want to tell you something”, replied Procellae.
“Sam Summer. For the good you have done, we claim you as the Titan god, so you could either live up here with us, or stay there?” Zeus asked.
“I think I’ll stay here because the Titan bloods are my people”, replied Summer.
“Wise choice,” Zeus replied as he disappeared into the clouds.
Moral: When you are losing, one smart move can even the playing field.

Our Year 5 Students were full of excitement to be attending their first camp as a Waverley College student. Stanwell Tops, which is located between Sydney and Wollongong, was nothing short of a postcard. The picturesque treetop mountain range, with the occasional waterfall in the distance, amazed all the students throughout the camp.
The boys quickly settled into camp life, getting stuck into the wide range of activities on offer by the Stanwell Tops.
These included:
In spite of all the activities taking place, the boys were largely more excited about the dorms they were staying in with some of their mates. It created plenty of opportunities for students to connect with each other and create new friendships.
Another highlight for the boys was the food options on offer, it’s fair to say no students left camp unhappy or hungry, but maybe a little damp from the rain!
The overall experience of Year 5 Camp gave all students every opportunity to create new memories, step out of their comfort zone to face challenges, and conquer fears along the way.
It taught our boys about resilience, compassion, and genuine mateship for one another. It was an experience the boys will hopefully never forget, and one that will begin to positively mould their development into adolescence.
I would like to acknowledge all the Waverley staff who donated their time to be a part of the experience, and to the Stanwell Tops staff who made every day enjoyable and memorable for our students.
A massive congratulations to Ryan Desousa and our U11-13 Freestyle Relay team for their amazing achievements at the CIS Swimming Carnival, which took place on Thursday, 24 March. Ryan Desousa competed in the multiclass events and placed 2nd in both his Breaststroke and Freestyle heats. He went on to win two medals in the finals. What a massive achievement for Ryan. As a College, we are very proud.
The Relay Team placed 3rd in their heat and 8th in the final, which is a great effort from the boys on the day, considering the competition in the races. The team on the day consisted of Ngakau Hirroti, Rowan Metzl, Aidan McNee and Jacob Roorda.
Unfortunately, the team was missing Roman Szabu, who unfortunately wasn’t able to attend, but we thank Aidan for stepping in to help the team compete at a high standard on the day.
As Term 1 Sport came to an end, it wasn’t quite the start to sport we had hoped for, with all the interruptions and cancellations. I would like to commend all teams for the resilience during this tough season; all students and coaches handled it with class.
Congratulations Water Polo B Team
There were some fantastic results throughout the season, but I’d like to acknowledge the Water Polo B team. They played all six of their matches that were scheduled for the half season, and finished the term undefeated. It was a huge achievement and we know they will continue it into Term 4.
Congratulations Ishaan Jeena – Japanese Karate Federation Australia National Championships 2022
Ishaan Jeena competed at the Japanese Karate Federation Australia National Championships 2022. He received two gold medals for U12 Kata and U12 Kumite.
Congratulations Year 5 Students in Oztag U10 Grand Final
The following Year 5 students won the Eastern Suburbs Oztag U10 Grand Final. The boys went through the season undefeated: Joey Di Blasio, Jackson MacAskill, Hugo Cummins, Louis Coleman, Kai Kolster and Ollie Burke.

5 Blue have been having a sensational Term 1. They are a fantastic group of boys who always strive to uphold all the College values. They enjoy each other’s company, and they should be very proud of their collaboration and cooperation.
5 Blue have been exploring ways in which to have a ‘Growth Mindset’, and the students continue to impress with the way they persevere and challenge themselves, while having a positive attitude.
Here is a little bit about some of the activities we have been exploring in class.
5 Blue have been doing philosophy inquiry sessions where we sit in a circle and use a structured process to discuss and explore various topics. We present a range of ideas, and can agree and disagree with others, as well as challenge them.
It has been a fun way to develop strong discussion skills as well as our critical thinking. We aren’t allowed to interrupt each other until it’s our turn, which is super hard. Even our teacher struggles to wait her turn!
The book, Where Children Sleep, captures the lives and situations of diverse children around the world — told through individual portraits and environmental pictures of their bedrooms.
It’s great for understanding the enormous range of situations that children around the world are brought up in, and for gaining perspective.
5 Blue wrote their own version, describing their world in the third person.
Here is an example from the book, followed by one from our class.
Rio From 5 Blue
Rio is a nine-year-old boy who lives in Sydney, Australia. He lives in an apartment with his parents, two sisters, a dog and a cat. Rio goes to school where there are lots of policies and rules. It takes 15 minutes to walk there and five minutes to drive. There is lots of traffic where Rio lives.
In his room, he has a desk that his dad normally uses. He has lots of fun in the room, especially when he is home alone. Rio has an amazing view of Bondi Beach and sometimes Bronte. Sometimes he goes outside to play with his sister if it is good weather.
Rio likes playing video games such as Roblox and Mario Kart. His favourite sports are Touch Football and Hockey. He loves going outside to hit the hockey ball around and playing with the rugby ball. Rio also has a pool where he loves practising for swimming carnivals and playing and jumping around.
When he grows up, he wants to be a Psychiatrist.
5 Blue boys have been getting to know their new classmates, as well as delving into themselves. They have explored their own multiple intelligence strengths and interests, and created personalised magazine covers as a visual representation.
Here are some examples:
Our class has been using Banqer, which is an online platform that teaches financial literacy to students all over the world. It teaches how finances, rent, bills, super, tax and loans work. We get money each week for being a part of the class, as well as rewards for great work. We also get paid for our class jobs.
We set up our bills such as electricity and pay rent automatically. There is also a class leaderboard of your net worth, achievements and savings. You have different accounts for your money like your savings and everyday account. Try to keep all your money in your everyday account before you start getting jobs, because you don’t want to go into debt when your bills come out.
With your money you can buy houses and cars or scooters. You can also get extra money by becoming a delivery driver if you have the right car. Did you know that Banqer is used by more than 170,000 people around Australia?
